It has now been over a year since the civil war broke out in Sudan due to rivalries between two factions of the military government, the SAF and RFS. This conflict has brought to light the history of foreign invasions, ethnic tensions, disputes over religion and resources that have been historical factors in Sudanese conflicts. An airstrike was carried out by Israeli forces on Iran's Embassy in Syria’s capital city: Damascus. It’s been reported that three senior commanders and four officers, who were part of overseeing covert operations in the Middle East, were killed in the strike. On March 22, 2024, Krasnogorsk, Russia, a city just outside of Moscow faced a mass shooting that left 144 people dead, 551 people injured, and 95 people missing. Shortly after, the shooting was deemed a terrorist attack with conflicting reports of responsibility continuing to where the associations of the assailants are still unknown. On January 13th, Lai Ching-te was elected the new President of Taiwan. This election and his victory has come in the midst of an ongoing risk of conflict with China over military threats of invasion and an ongoing dispute over territorial claims in the South China Sea. Tensions between democratic Taiwan and Communist China have been high since the 1950s and conversations around the election put these concerns at the center of politics in Taiwan. The election has also included a shift in Parliament seats that will no doubt result in new challenges in Taiwan’s legislative process. This brings us to the questions of how did we get here, and where we may be heading next?
