Tweetable Quotes
“I think the biggest thing for us is that if the client doesn’t buy in, there will be no change. If we’re punishing them or consequencing them, they’re going to do it until the consequence has been lifted. So, really the focus for us is to get them to buy into themselves - to get them to understand what I’m feeling.” (10:29) (John)
“For us - the clinical approach - we think of ourselves as a high-intense therapeutic intervention. And so, it’s a deep dive into what’s going on for me, for my family, for everything in my life, and then working through that in different ways.” (12:09) (John)
“That’s the hardest part for me, it just tears at me knowing the value of what can happen with [outdoor therapy], and the change that can occur, and the excitement, and then to hear people just bash it and speak negatively about it. It’s hard.” (17:32) (John)
“When people think about Wilderness, they think it’s just sending their child off. And I tell parents all the time, ‘You’re not sending your child away. You’re going on the journey with them.’” (23:50) (John)

Tweetable Quotes
“I think for me, really what an intervention is is when all else has failed and they don’t hear your voice. The worst thing about addiction, and I think mental illness, is that you don’t know how bad you are. The denial part of it is what keeps so many people from getting well.” (01:21) (Candy)
“When I first got into recovery, I was so grim and so serious. And I tell people, we don’t have a hot and cold faucet for feelings - the good feelings and the bad feelings. So, when we want to try to get rid of the bad feelings, we just turn off that one faucet. When we do that, we’re leaving out all the joy and when you begin to finally start to walk through the stuff you’re so frightened of, or embarrassed about, or ashamed, you recover the joy and the laughter.” (06:03) (Jeanie)
“Servant leadership goes back to the spiritual person that I am. I think servant leadership just rises above.” (07:55) (Tonda)
“It’s beyond me, other than my God, as to why I’m not an alcoholic, why I’m not dead, and why I’m not alive. My family was so incredibly dysfunctional.” (10:52) (Dr. Flowers)
“I didn’t inherit anything from anybody. I worked for everything I did, but I manifested it. And I did it with the help of myself, my God, education, hard work, passion the people who love me, and listening to my own intuition.” (13:03) (Dr. Flowers)

32:41 – Belief and faith
35:07 – Dr. Flowers thanks listeners for tuning in to Part One of this episode and encourages them to return for Parts Two and Three with Tonda, Candy & Jeanie
Tweetable Quotes“I guess I’ve been on a spiritual journey my whole life. I just keep going to the wrong address.” (06:44) (Jeanie)
“Along the way, I think I’ve been introduced to different levels of spirituality. Some of it is pretty crazy, but we don’t get to tell you how you feel in Twelve Step and that’s the magic of it. I don’t think you’re gonna stay unless you have some sort of spiritual awakening.” (13:14) (Candy)
“I think that’s the way we have to approach people that are looking for recovery. Everyone comes from a different place. And, one commonality I’ve found is that the people who bring family in and the family takes a part in their recovery, are so much more successful.” (19:02) (Tonda)
“I grew up in an alcoholic home. It was a loving alcoholic home, and there is such an animal. I knew I was loved. I knew we were loved. I also knew that there was something that crept in under the door that nobody could do anything about. And it fractured our family.” (26:02) (Jeanie)

17:03 – Dr. Flowers thanks Amanda for joining the show and lets listeners know where they can connect with her and the Behavioral Hospital of Bellaire
Tweetable Quotes“It’s funny because we talk about crossroads and how there’s a fork in our road where you really start to see which way you’re gonna go. At that time I had the interview as a mental health tech, I also had an interview as a store manager for a very big store chain. It was a lot more money, but when I did the tour at the residential treatment center for kiddos, I loved it. There was something so intriguing about it.” (05:39) (Amanda)
“I started to realize, as I got deeper into case management, that I needed to do something more extreme. I needed to be at a higher level in order to make change. The people in the trenches - the case managers, the direct care staff - they do a lot of work. But a lot of change comes from the top.” (07:54) (Amanda)
“I would not be at a company if I didn;’t share the same virtues, the same philosophy, the same everything as the President.” (09:01) (Amanda)
“Sometimes, doing jobs or taking on responsibility that goes outside of our comfort zone, that’s where you’re gonna grow. That’s what we do as humans, we grow. We grow from challenge. We grow from obstacles.” (10:47) (Amanda)
“Right now, I want to make BHB - Behavioral Hospital of Bellaire - as successful as possible. I want patients to come in and when they leave I want them to call their parents, family and friends and say, ‘I feel better.’” (13:37) (Amanda)

Apro Choudhury is a mind-body interventionist who focuses on integrative behavioral health consultancy and public health with six years of experience empowering traumatized clinical populations, communities, and healthcare institutions. He’s incredibly skilled at building relationship-driven partnerships that activate our capacity to heal trauma, understand ourselves, and face challenges with practical and accessible mind-body skills.
Today, he joins the show to talk about generational trauma, his passion for serving others and the incredible work he’s doing with families and pediatric populations at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Key Takeaways01:22 – Apro Choudhry joins the show to talk about his background as a mind-body interventionist and the incredible work he’s doing in the community of Uvalde, Texas
06:38 – Service-oriented activities
11:35 – How trauma spans multiple generations both in the past and in the future
20:18 – Working with families at Texas Children’s Hospital
23:20 – Dr. Flowers thanks Apro for joining the show and for the great work he’s doing and lets listeners know where they can connect with him
Tweetable Quotes“The work that we’re now doing in Uvalde is coming together, sharing what needs to be shared. No one is diagnosing you. No one is trying to fix you. We’re coming together as humans. and we’re teaching skills that help us connect more deeply to what’s happening in that moment. And that’s a lot of what mind-body medicine is.” (07:24) (Apro)
“So, what’s in our subconscious mind and what’s living in ourselves signals to ourselves and sends messages to ourselves. That’s a lot of what mind-body medicine allows us to look at and interact with - this process that’s already happening.” (15:45) (Apro)
“I think working with kids and families is such a privilege because you get to work with a complete system. So much of what happens in general with pediatric populations is that the child or the adolescent might think that they’re responsible for the challenges they’re facing. And that creates a whole other complex - shame, guilt - that complicates the healing process.” (20:42) (Apro)

Tweetable Quotes“We [at Culinary Misfits] care more about the experience. The food has to be good, but my mindset was I want people to approach Culinary Misfits with a question like, ‘Oh, wow what is this?’” (03:43) (Chef Eric James)
“The reason why I don’t even do a lot of food competitions is because I don’t believe it’s about the chef. I really don’t believe it’s about the food. The food makes the journey better, but I believe it’s about us as human beings, as the journey that we take that food can help guide us on that journey. For me, I believe that food can cure the soul.” (07:15) (Chef Eric James)

10:41 – The growth of A.I. and Telemedicine in the aftermath of Covid

21:10 – Why it is so difficult to find good mental healthcare in the UK
25:14 – Dr. Flowers thanks Farideh for the incredibly work she continues to do in mental health
26:40 – Dr. Flowers thanks Farideh for joining today’s show and Farideh leaves listeners with her thoughts on what it means to understand the human condition
Tweetable Quotes“I picked that university because they’ve got a really strong background in the medical field here. You get to work with some of the best in the field and you talk with some of the best in the field. And, with that, it sort of unlocked this new passion in me. I did a lot of research on the effects of migration on developing effective disorders. I did a lot of research with perinatal women, with people with additions. And that kind of drew this passion in me and I ended up working in addictions for quite a few years.” (08:12) (Farideh)
“And I think one thing, for me, that settled really nicely in my brain when I came out to see J. Flowers Health Institute at the end of last year was actually how much at the forefront of medicine you actually are.” (09:54) (Farideh)
“The idea of a holistic, natural way of life is really coming forward in all these different ways of being.” (14:24) (Farideh)
“We have The National Health Service, which is obviosuly free healthcare. However, what it was fifty years ago is very different to how it is today. It’s really, for lack of a better term, almost on its knees. It’s really difficult to access mental healthcare, or actualy healthcare in general. It’s extremely hard. The waiting lists are as long as one year. You’ve got hundreds of people waiting to access care.” (21:55) (Farideh)
“You need someone to say, ‘Hey, sit down with us. We’ll do a ten-day evaluation and find out what’s wrong with you. We’ll understand you from all these different angles, and we’ll give you this intervention and treatment program and help you moving forward. And I think that’s one thing that J. Flowers does so beautifully. And that’s the thing that’s missing in London. It’s a lot of self-knowledge. You’ve got to go out there and search and seek. And that’s what people find difficult, and I think that’s what people are really struggling with here.” (23:55) (Farideh)

09:21 – Growing up in New York City with a very artistic and inventive father

17:47 – The Teflon Raincoat

22:10 – Advice Eve gives to the struggling families she works with
23:15 – Dr. Flowers thanks Eve for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they can connect with her
Tweetable Quotes“One of the things I saw that was particularly disturbing and hard for me as a woman was the number of women who were accustomed to being in the workforce who were now home with children and who found themselves resorting to drinking first later in the day, then earlier in the day. So something that had been an innocuous habit kind of flipped a switch and really became a problem.” (02:51) (Eve)
“I am someone where substance abuse or mental health issues are impacting a family, I go in and really come to understand the dynamics of the family - perhaps multi-generational issues that have transcended the family - and come in with tools and suggestions, not only to help someone in the family who’s struggling with substance abuse, but to help the remaining members of the family.” (03:58) (Eve)
“So, I worked for many years as a biomedical research librarian. I worked at a cancer institute in Seattle and at the National Institutes of Health. And I really came to understand cancer as a chronic, relapsing, progressive disease which, left unchecked, would most likely lead to death. So that was the framework that I worked in. And, people have this misconception about librarians. They think of us in the backroom, shrinking. I was a very public librarian.” (06:16) (Eve)
“I think because of my own personal journey of recovery, because I use a lot of the tools that I learned in treatment - meditation on a regular basis, exercise on a regular basis, good nutrition to the best of my ability given that I travel so much - I just really work to have that peripatetic balance in my life.” (17:14) (Eve)

Claudia Schwarz is the Vice President of Clinical Outreach at J. Flowers Health Institute. She’s a clinician who had her own private practice for years before becoming a consultant and eventually pursuing business development.
Today, Claudia joins the show to discuss her own personal experience with J. Flowers Health Institute as a patient. Claudia chronicles the care she received there and how that has transformed and inspired her to promote and advocate J. Flowers Health Institute to everyone who will listen. Jason and Claudia touch on how J. Flowers is helping to provide care not only in medicine, but in mental health, psychiatric and addiction, among other human conditions.
Key Takeaways01:22 – Claudia Schwartz joins the show to discuss her background and experience as a clinician, what got her involved in the field of marriage and family therapy, and what brought her to J. Flowers Health Institute
05:05 – From clinician to educational consultant to business development
08:32 – Claudia opens up about a recent personal medical complication
16:04 – The mental and emotional toll of getting a pacemaker
17:58 – Dr. Flowers thanks Claudia for her vulnerability and transparency
21:18 – Dr. Flowers thanks Claudia for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they can connect with J. Flowers Health Institute
Tweetable Quotes“My whole goal is to bring the message of what we do to people who haven’t heard of us, because for us, we’re all about collaboration. We want to work with other programs. We want to work with other clinicians side-by-side so that we can service clients the best way that we can. And, I really enjoy meeting new people. I enjoy hearing different perspectives on how to treat people, because it’s not just a one-size-fits-all.” (06:10) (Claudia)
“The care that I got here [at J. Flowers Health Institute] was, I can’t even say second to none. There’s just nobody else that can give this care, I believe. From the very first day when I saw the cardiologist he, after spending an hour with us talking to me - and this is the actual cardiologist, not just the nurse, which is usually what happens - he had the phone picked up and was calling the next specialist. I had testing lined up. It was just two weeks of constant testing and monitoring. They left no stone unturned, as is what we do here at J. Flowers.” (11:53) (Claudia)
“It was so hard because I just felt like when I think about pacemakers, I think about grandpa with his cane. And I know that there are people that are in their twenties that need a pacemaker because their heart is not working well. But usually that’s somebody with significant heart disease or possibility of having a heart attack. And feeling that, it just stopped me dead in my tracks because I thought, ‘How is this possible?’ It was so debilitating mentally for me.” (16:31) (Claudia)
“Finally being a client of J. Flowers and being able to express what it really feels like to get this kind of care makes it more amazing to do this job. I feel like I can talk about it even better now because I’ve had my own experience.” (19:36) (Claudia)

Clinician, social worker, best-selling author, keynote speaker and interventionist, Dr. Louise Stanger returns to the show to share the work she is doing to help individuals and families thrive.
Dr. Louise explains the process of ‘family mapping’ and why she is so passionate about doing really good family work. She talks about the importance of taking care of yourself both mentally and physically and shares her ‘why.’
Key Takeaways01:24 – Dr. Louise Stanger joins the show to discuss her goal of helping individuals and families thrive
06:59 – Dr. Flowers talks about his passion for flying
12:12 – Family mapping, explained
22:18 – Dr. Flowers thanks Dr. Lousie for the incredible work she continues to do
23:37 – How Dr. Louise manages to take great care of herself
29:51 – Dr. Flowers expounds on his ‘Why’
31:24 – Dr. Flowers thanks Dr. Louise for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they can connect with her
Tweetable Quotes“What I love about working with families that you have is that I get to work in such a collaborative, generational way. I get to work with different types of clinicians you have. They all have different ages and experiences, and yet we all come together with the greater good of ‘How can we help this person thrive?’” (02:33) (Dr. Louise)
“Everybody has their own story. And before you can ever work with family, you have to join up with that family member. In seven seconds, whether it’s a mom, a dad, a brother, a sister, an uncle, a partner, they decide if they like me or not. And, I sit there and I say, ‘Tell me about you.’ And I ask them to tell me about their loved one. But then we sort of jump because life is really messy.” (13:23) (Dr. Louise)
“I do love [working with families]. And it takes longer when you’re working with families. But I won’t put a family together until I have a chance to interview them.” (18:51) (Dr. Louise)
“I’m really blessed that some behavioral healthcare centers around the country are just giving me the families to work with. I’m sort of like ‘the family whisperer,’ which is really different because we’re starting because the person is already here. It doesn’t mean they’ll stay here People recognize how important really good family work is and how we can join up to help move them to change over time.” (22:56) (Dr. Louise)
“My ‘why’ is my history and my passion for seeing families come out of dysfunction and come into health and be able to thrive, and heal their wounds, and heal their past. You and I both, as you said, have that in common and have been able to do that. And, guess what? We still do therapy. We still do things to make ourselves healthy. I will always go to therapy. I think we all should be in therapy constantly.” (29:51) (Dr. Flowers)

Dr. Jon Stevens is triple board-certified in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and obesity medicine. With a strong background in psychopharmacology and advanced diagnostic tools, Dr. Stevens strives to blend the art and science of psychiatric care.
Today, Dr. Jon joins the show to discuss the psychology behind medical weight loss, the game changing interventions available today in obesity medicine, and best practices we all can implement to lead healthier and happier lifestyles.
Key Takeaways01:18 – Dr. Jon Stevens joins the show to share his experience as a board-certified adult psychiatrist and why he recently chose to pursue a board certification in obesity medicine
06:42 – Some sobering statistics on obesity
09:22 – Gastric bypass and lap band surgeries
10:15 – The decision to get board-certified in obesity medicine
13:45 – New weight loss interventions
16:12 – Ozempic and the proper use of Ozempic
22:56 – BMI, explained
25:59 – How age and sex impact weight loss
28:04 – Dr. Flowers thanks Dr. Stevens for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they canconnect with him
Tweetable Quotes“Part of getting board certified in obesity and medicine - doing that journey during Covid and having the time to focus on that - was really scratching my own itch. My patients were gaining weight, developing complications from obesity, and we needed to find, together, interventions that would help them.” (03:11) (Dr. Jon)
“There have been some studies, including one in the New England Journal of Medicine that said, ‘in the next ten or fifteen years practically everyone in America could be overweight or obese.’ And we’re already at sixty percent when you count overweight and obese. Forty percent of Americans are clinically obese. I’m not using that term in the pejorative sense that it’s sometimes used. This is really a crisis and epidemic that we’re facing.” (04:40) (Dr. Jon)
“The rates of childhood overweight and obesity are increasing even faster than adults, which is terrifying. Once the body gets to that space, the body sets at that space. A dirty secret is that diet and exercise, once you’re already in the clinically obese realm, only really lead to about five percent body mass loss.” (08:01) (Dr. Jon)
“I’m so excited right now. I wasn’t practicing at the time, but I really feel like right now in obesity medicine with all the new interventions, it must be what it was like for a psychiatrist practicing at the dawn of Prozac. There are some fantastic, new, and really game changing interventions.” (13:52) (Dr. Jon)
“BMI is controversial and much maligned, but it’s still what defines overweight and obesity. Specifically, a BMI of 25 or above is clinically overweight - that’s 25 to 29.9 - and above 30 is obese.” (23:08) (Dr. Jon)
“Many men in this country are silent suffering from that. Men already live much shorter lifespans than women in our country. Diabetes and heart disease many of those cases stem from obesity and being overweight.” (27:38) (Dr. Jon)

13:34 – Mel and Harry reflect on a few cases they’ve worked on recently
24:21 – Dr. Flowers thanks Harry & Mel for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they can connect with them and learn more about BreatheFit
Tweetable Quotes“Respiratory therapy goes under many different facets of healthcare, not only from the acute care side, but also the post-acute care side.” (03:19) (Mel)
“BreatheFit was actually born out of necessity. We have found that there are gaps in healthcare that a lot of places don’t cover. Because of our healthcare system, unfortunately, there are just spaces where people need help. Well BreatheFit was hopefully able to fill in those gaps, especially in the world of behavioral health. Owning some of those rehabs through many, many years, we also found out that a lot of people suffer through the mental troubles of healing.” ( 05:56) (Mel)
“The second we fall asleep at night, we stop and we start breathing from our diaphragm. And then, when we wake up in the morning, the first thing we do is take a deep breath from our chest.” (10:29) (Dr. Jason)
“Qigong is an internal martial art. It’s a form of combat that’s slowed down. Without getting esoteric, it helps the flow of energy in the body.” (12:20) (Harry)
“We want to create life-changing development.” (15:45) (Mel)
“It’s amazing when you take a little bit of weight, and you make somebody lift it. And, when they can accomplish that, it gives them an amazing feeling of confidence.” (18:34) (Harry)

15:04 – Advice Dr. Clay & Moe would give to those looking to lose 10-15 pounds

22:06 – Differentiating between pain and soreness while working out
25:25 – Dr. Flowers thanks Dr. Clay Ardoin & Moe Schlachter for joining today’s show and lets listeners know where they can connect with them
Tweetable Quotes“It’s hard. It’s hard to change habits. It’s hard to change behaviors. That’s one thing to make sure people understand is that not many people can see this through. So, the fact that you’re willing to get this started is at least a step in the right direction.” (07:30) (Dr. Clay Ardoin)
“I like to tell people to remember why you got started. The ‘why’ is really important, because motivation will fade at the end of the day. What is your ‘why?’ Weeks go by, months go by and things can become a little faded. You can almost forget why you started. And, if people are telling you to do this and you’re doing it for them, you really have to do it for yourself and those changes have to come from within. It does become hard to stay with your goals but you just have to go back and say, ‘This is why I’m doing this,’ and it helps you get back on track.” (10:04) (Dr. Clay Ardoin)
“There’s research on this. There’s a 2020 study that showed that an action-oriented goal or a process-oriented goal has a higher statistical chance of sticking than an avoidance-oriented goal.” (11:59) (Moe Schlachter)
“Can you get up ten minutes earlier and do something? You don’t need to block out two hours in the middle of your day, maybe it’s twenty minutes before your day starts and twenty minutes before you go to bed. That can make a huge difference over the course of weeks and months.” (17:39) (Dr. Clay Ardoin)
“Regardless of where a person’s diet is at a given moment, there’s always this opportunity to increase anti-inflammatory foods.” (20:44) (Moe Schlachter)
“A lot of it is just having conversations and building that rapport with the patients. It’s even more important than the exercise itself. You have to be able to build that trust.” (23:15) (Dr. Clay Ardoin)

Things were good. Things were bad. There were lessons learned and to learn from our elders in a sense.” (05:33) (Dr. Galati) “First of all, a lot of people don’t know where their liver is. I’ll be examining them and I’ll pull their gown up and I’ll be palpating around and they’ll ask, ‘What are you doing up there?’ And so, that’s a big point that people don’t even know where their liver is and so if they have a pain in their side, they don’t know that it could be their liver or their gallbladder. The liver is the largest organ, next to the skin, and the unique thing about that, first of all, is it is involved in over two hundred different biochemical reactions. It does a lot of stuff.” (06:41) (Dr. Galati) “Alcohol accounts for about forty-nine percent of all cirrhosis, which means fifty percent is due to obesity, and fatty liver, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, autoimmune disease, too much copper, too much iron in your blood. So, if you understand that Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver, you’re not automatically deemed an alcoholic or bad person. It comes out of this stigma.” (09:58) (Dr. Galati) “We have, over the last ten years at Houston Methodist Hospital, become the number one liver transplant program - or number two depending on the month and different volumes - which is a Herculean effort to go from the lower third to the top, beating out household names like Cornell, Mount Saini, UCLA, Chicago, Miami.” (23:54) (Dr. Galati) “There is something that’s been around since the earliest days of transplant called ‘The Six Month Rule,’ which basically says if you have Alcohol Use Disorder - you are an alcoholic, you have cirrhosis - bad boy. You have to sit in time-out for six months until you go to recovery, abstinence, you get a sponsor, you work your way through a 12-Step Program, you have proof of abstinence. But, this is for women specifically in recovery, and it’s all over the place.” (04:27) (Brenda) “Lisa and her husband sold Promises Treatment Centers and left the organization as well, but the program was started. And so, Patricia stepped in as a Board Member. Bryan Moeller went from being a Board Member to being Chairman at the time. And it was just for a long time just a dream of keeping this place open that they saw helps women. Even today, almost fifteen years later, there are no programs like Miriam’s House.” (06:32) (Brenda) “There’s just all these safe spaces with trained staff to make sure that moms can visit their kids. When you’re separated from your children and you’re trying to get visitations, even just getting to the place where you can visit your children is a struggle.” (14:59) (Brenda) “Miriam’s House you can make a donation to online at www.miriamshousela.org. You can do an online donation, but there’s also a mailing address there where you can mail a check. You can buy a ticket to Polo and join us on that beautiful sunny day if you’re on the West Side.” (23:03) (Brenda) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

So, I felt that this behavior was really a psychotic way of asking for help. Therefore, I didn’t feel that I was in immediate danger because there was a question there. ‘Will you help me?’ And, of course I wanted to help him. That’s what I live for, to help people.”(05:31) (Dr. Harvey) “A child between zero and four is when their emotional stability gets set. And that was a very unstable time for me, which resulted in mental illness.”(14:24) (Daniel) “As I understood the dynamics, having had a few thousand patients before, I knew we were going to do ok. I had this belief that wherever you start you can always do better, which is where I am.”(23:46) (Dr. Harvey) “He saved my life. Not just my life, but other lives as well. What do you say to someone who’s saved your life and stuck with you for twenty to twenty five years?”(25:16) (Harvey) “Any kind of challenge that I’ve had, it’s been my experience, if we take our time, and carefully think about it, and keep an optimistic outlook, we’re gonna get there.”(29:52) (Dr. Harvey) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

Lacey Tezino is an experienced technology leader with a passion for promoting healthier mother-daughter relationships. Lacey believes that technology can be used in beautiful ways to enhance our lives and make mental health care more accessible and convenient. She has worked as the Director of IT and Clinical Applications Manager for the Menninger Clinic, one of the top 10 psychiatric hospitals in the country. Today, Lacey joins the show to speak to the work she is currently doing pouring every creative ounce into the success of Passport Journeys, a company focused on the mother-daughter relationship through teletherapy, live events and more. Key Takeaways01:24 – Lacey Tezino joins the show to discuss mother-daughter relationships and the work she’s doing through the Passport Journeys App 04:50 – Defining the mother-daughter relationship and what inspired Lacey to launch Passport Journeys 07:38 – Lacey speaks to how the pandemic influenced teletherapy for her and her business 09:56 – Lacey opens up and shares a nearly unbelievable story about the relationship she had with her mother 15:53 – Lacey’s experience growing up in a homogenized white neighborhood in Texas 18:59 – The future of Passport Journeys 20:33 – Where Lacey sees herself in five years 21:25 – Dr. Flowers thanks Lacey for joining today’s show to share her inspirational story and let’s listeners know where they can connect with her and learn more about Passport Journeys Tweetable Quotes“There’s two things that make us [Passport Journeys] different. Number one is the niche market of mother-daughter. There’s not an app that is targeted to relationships so we’re really going on a laser-focused approach on the relationship. And then the second piece is we’ll be the first teletherapy app to actually prescribe activities.”(03:44) (Lacey) “I was working as Director of IT at the time and my team had to take clinicians who had been working for decades in front of their patients, and really work through providing therapy and management. And, when we had to shift [because of the pandemic], we had ten days to bring the hospital up to do teletherapy. And when I watched it and watched how difficult it was for the clinicians, but then once everyone started going, how convenient it was.” (07:48) (Lacey) “The beautiful part is that we were able to forgive. We were able to say, ‘It doesn’t matter what decisions or what happened. You’re dying. I love you, and I’m caring for you. And I forgive you. ’I’m proud of that.”(15:36) (Lacey) “Everything is tailored to the mother-daughter relationship for the business. So I see us nailing that over the next five years. Key Takeaways01:30 – Dr. Flowers is joined today by his fellow Founder and Leadership Team, including Robbin Mooney, Michael Beard, Dr. Melanie Somerville and Shay Butts 02:36 – Robbin Mooney shares her background and what inspired her to enter into the field of recovery and mental health 05:25 – Michael Beard speaks to his training as an interventionist and his uncanny ability to instill calm in people and patients 08:27 – Dr. Melanie Somerville reflects on her passion for mental healthcare 11:02 – Chief Experience Officer Shay Butts recalls how she met Dr. Flowers 16:36 – The ‘traditional’ approach to mental health and addiction vs. the JFlowers approach 19:28 – Dr. Flowers highlights the critical role diversity plays in Houston and at JFlowers Health Institute 20:13 – Long-term Covid complications and how JFlowers Health Institute has reacted 22:01 – Dr. Melanie talks about what goes into creating a clear diagnosis 23:26 – Michael speaks to the familial culture that has been fostered at JFlowers Health Institute 26:18 – Dr. Flowers thanks Robbin, Michael, Dr. Melanie and Shay for joining today’s show Tweetable Quotes“You inspired me through the years and that’s what I really was attracted to was your inspiration and your passion for treating the whole person, not just looking at maybe the psychological piece, or the medical piece, or the mental health, or addiction.”(05:01) (Robbin) “With my own parents, they always approached us when we were in trouble with love, and compassion, and asking ‘Why? What’s actually happening that you’re behaving the way you are behaving?’ And I think that really works in this field because our people are all struggling.” (07:18) (Michael) “I’m always learning, always trying to improve my knowledge and skills around that area. And it’s really fascinating to work with someone who comes in with seemingly intractable pain and when you help them understand how the brain is creating that pain and how a lot of their life experiences, such as trauma, can play into their experience with pain. It’s empowering for people to see that they can manage that chronic pain that has really no functional reason for existing. They don’t have an infection, a cancer tumor, or any kind of malady, yet the brain is somehow creating pain for them.” (10:04) (Dr. Melanie) “That’s the other part of concierge I see is immediate action and immediate accommodation to whatever is happening with the client. It’s hands-on, customization, and really supporting the client throughout all the way on a one-on-one approach.”(16:16) (Robbin) “Being in a traditional treatment center, the frustration of having a client who you can’t do all these things that are really necessary to diagnose a patient’s mental health issues so they can stay sober. Here we are able to do that. We can diagnose, treat with medication if need be, and then attack the addiction. That is why we have such a great success rate at JFlowers because we are able to do the whole mind, body and spirit.”(16:54) (Michael) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

Today, he joins the show to discuss the connection between sleep and nutrition and recommendations for balancing the two in order to achieve sound mental health. Key Takeaways01:25 – Moe Schlachter joins the show to discuss the relationship between nutrition and sleep 03:20 – Sleep disturbance, melatonin, and tryptophan 08:11 – Why it’s difficult to pinpoint or zero in on one food or nutrient to improve sleep 09:31 – Sleep and nutrition in adolescence 10:51 – Separating food from sleep and a healthy cutoff time for caffeine 13:30 – Foods to avoid and foods that help with inflammation issues 14:44 – How to recognize disordered eating 16:22 – Advice for new parents looking to improve their sleep 17:35 – Sleep debt and catching up on sleep 18:39 – Recommendations for balancing sleep, nutrition and mental health 21:19 – Dr. Flowers thanks Moe for joining today’s show to share his expertise and let’s listeners know where they can connect with him Tweetable Quotes“About seventy million people in this country have some kind of sleep deficiency. And the cost is really really big. It can contribute to heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, stroke. It affects mood, productivity, and safety. So, sleep is super important.” (02:57) (Moe Schlachter) “Valerian is another nutrient that is an extract from a root that can help us fall asleep and increase our sleep quality. Ashwagandha is a supplement that can help us improve sleep as well. Foods like cherries and kiwis have different chemicals that help us boost production of melatonin and can help us fall asleep too.” (07:29) (Moe Schlachter) “When it comes to nutrition science, it’s sometimes difficult to isolate specific nutrients or foods just because we, as a being, rely on so many different nutrients to support life function. So, if we’re trying to zero in on sleep and isolate those nutrients, we can’t really control other nutrients we need for other life functions. So, it can be tricky to try to zero in on one food because there isn’t really the science of just focusing on one thing.” (08:21) (Moe Schlachter) “I would say you should cut off caffeine by about 1pm or so if you’re finding that caffeine is keeping you up. But, if you’re ok with it and it isn’t interrupting your sleep then caffeine shouldn’t be a detractor for you.” (13:15) (Moe Schlachter) “When there’s disordered eating, there’s also disordered sleep. It’s a cycle. Starvation makes it harder to sleep. There’s more anxiety. There’s less restfulness. There’s less relaxation. And that promotes even more anxiety which makes it harder and harder to eat. It’s a cycle that devolves.” (15:21) (Moe Schlachter) “You cannot correct for a long pattern of chronic sleep deficiency, whether it’s caused by a condition or caused by not setting the right regiment or rules for yourself. It’s something that, over time, the effects can accumulate.” (18:05) (Moe Schlachter) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

Caring for someone with any chronic disease or mental illness can take an emotional and even physical toll on caretakers. And many times, that investment can lead caregivers to lose sight of their own needs in the service of another’s care. As a clinician and former caregiver, Dr. Frank Chen discusses how family members can be intrinsic and critical parts of a loved one’s diagnosis and treatment journey. Also, support and coping strategies are needed if everyone is to effectively emerge throughout the process. In this podcast, we discuss the definition of compassion fatigue, and how it affects caregivers – professional and family members – and what the caregiver can do to take good care of themselves. Key Takeaways01:27 – Dr. Frank Chen joins the show to share what drew him to the field of psychiatry and his difficult experience seeking help for a member of his family 12:57 – Compassion fatigue explained 18:39 – Shay opens up about her own experience acting as a caregiver in her family 20:41 – Advice on caring for yourself as a caregiver 27:14 – The value of speaking to a therapist and other practical self-care acts you can do 34:13 – Shay thanks Dr. Frank for sharing his story Tweetable Quotes“There’s a very regimented path forward when you get into Med School. And it always seemed like it was very difficult to break away from that. And I think that part of this unconscious conflict that I experienced was probably what ended up attracting me to the field of psychiatry - to kind of conquer this conflict, if you will. I know now that in order to conquer this conflict, you get a good therapist.” (05:43) (Dr. Frank Chen) “This is why I encourage anyone who has these intrapsychic conflicts to start seeing a therapist. Having someone out there to help you navigate through those struggles and know what’s norm and what’s not norm may build a much more secure self.” (07:14) (Dr. Frank Chen) “When you stop taking care of yourself, you may actually not be doing your family member any justice in terms of trying to help them, because you’re gonna get depressed. You’re gonna end up getting anxious. You’re gonna end up not being able to help.” (13:51) (Dr. Frank Chen) “Being a caretaker takes a toll.” (17:55) (Dr. Frank Chen) “So, that’s really important to be able to recognize other people not trying to be critical of you but to give you some warning that, ‘Hey, you’re not acting like yourself.’ And be able to take that feedback and not get so defensive about it but do something about it.” (26:31) (Dr. Frank Chen) “You wouldn’t try to fix a car with black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. It’s a fairly complex job. So why would you try to fix mental health issues.” (34:34) (Dr. Frank Chen) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

If you’re talking about interventions, I always work with other talented team members. I don’t do them alone because I make no pretense that someone may fall in love with someone else or bond better with someone else. And that’s the way we help move them to change. And, because we deal with such complex families with such high-intensity problems, you need more than one person.” (14:10) (Dr. Louise) “And then we did some incredible family work in your offices where I’ll never forget it because it changed their trajectory because what was happening was there was so much unresolved grief and guilt over the loss of a loved one. While we were sitting here, an eagle soared by. And, in that moment, that family got forgiveness, got transformation, and started on a different trajectory.” (19:34) (Dr. Louise) “An intervention is somewhat like a living eulogy. And you want to make sure that you do that correctly. And you want to give that family who’s been struggling the right tools so they can thrive.” (22:30) (Dr. Louise) “Ninety-seven percent of the work upfront for an intervention is done with those people [family and friends] because the person who is experiencing the substance use disorder, or the mental health disorder, or the chronic pain, or the process disorder, they’re going to keep doing what they’re doing until these people change how they behave.” (25:31) (Dr. Louise) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen)

The skill set you have to have as a comedian comes from such a dark place, right? You have this skill set to take something so dark and find something funny about it. It doesn’t mean that you don’t deal with that pain, you just go, ‘Ok, what’s funny about it?’” (02:10) (Marlon) “You know, in our neighborhood we grew up poor in the projects with all these characters around us. People that were in and out of jail, crackheads, dudes on the corners, drug dealers. And we’ve seen all of that and we were the class clowns. That was our gift in the community was to make people laugh.” (06:49) (Marlon) “Acceptance is the greatest love you can have.” (09:57) (Marlon) “I go to therapy. I have a therapist. I try to go weekly or monthly, but I’m always so busy. But when I feel it, I know I gotta unpack. And we sit down and we talk. Doug Lyons is the co-founder of Clere Consulting, an organization that works with families of means and prominence and a confluence of wealth, addiction and mental health concerns. Prior to founding Clere, Doug spent the last fifteen years with the Hazelden Foundation, finishing his career as the Director of Clinical Services. In an earlier role, he served as the Evaluation Directo, conducting and supervising over twenty-four hundred evaluations for physicians, lawyers and other high-profile figures. He is a highly sought after lecturer and speaker. Neely Lyons’ work includes serving as an Executive at the highest levels in all three branches of State government, including when she made history at the age of twenty-five to become the youngest ever elected Mississippi State Senator. Her Senate policy initiatives focused on the convergence of public health and public safety issues, such as drug control, mental health, addiction, domestic violence, and child protection services policies. While achieving professional success, Neely’s family was touched by addiction and mental health issues as well. Her unique 360 degree perspective, political life, professional engagement, and personal experiences complements the collective depth of Clere Consulting’s team, which she joined Clere in 2018. Today, Neely and Doug speak to how the world of addiction has impacted them and the inspirational work they are doing at Clere Consulting. Neely touches on how she collaborates with families and the specific processes utilized to ensure their loved ones get better. Doug expounds on his belief that systemic recovery comes from a multi-pronged approach that includes healing the mind, body and spirit. Finally, Neely and Doug reflect on the highlights and low points of their careers and speak to why passion is a critical component of their success. Key Takeaways01:25 – Neely and Doug Lyons speak to how they got involved in the world of addiction and the inspiring work they’re doing at Clere Consulting 09:02 – Doug breaks down the specific process they utilize at Clere Consulting 11:22 – Neely speaks to how she works with families at Clere 13:46 – The power of collaboration 14:32 – Doug explains why systemic recovery requires a multi-pronged approach of healing the mind, body, and spirit 19:18 – Neely speaks to her involvement in the oversight of Sober Living Homes and what families should look for in Sober Living Homes 22:54 – Neely and Doug reflect on the highest and lowest points of their careers 30:32 – Dr. Flowers thanks Neely and Doug for joining the show and lets listeners know where they can learn more about Clere Consulting Tweetable Quotes“As I listen to Doug, one of the things that I was thinking about was how many families come in and they’re fairly frustrated, they’re tired, and they are looking for hope. They’re trying to figure out what’s gonna work this time and they’re skeptical. I think we have to listen, primarily. That’s our job is to be able to listen to their story which is unique to them.” (11:26) (Neely) “Hope is based on data of a verifiable change process that families can engage in. And that’s based on best practices and lived experience that we bring as a team. So, we’re not asking people to wishfully think that their loved one will get better. We’re asking them to engage in a process that’s verifiable, where they can really start to hook into a hope that their loved one will get better.” (13:14) (Neely) “And that leads me to the spiritual piece. My instinct is that human connection is the difference.” (16:44) (Doug) “As providers, we want to provide care, but we also want to see our clients do well. And, oftentimes, this one little piece - this Sober Living - is that bridge process where people can go from the protected, supported, therapeutic environment back into their life.” (20:45) (Neely) “Usually the call we get is, ‘We’ve done this fifteen times. I tried to live up to him and followed into film, which was great. But then I found my own path and I know now that this is what I’m supposed to be doing. I began to think that that was who I was. And, as I look back on that now, I realize that A, that’s not who I am, it’s just what I do. And B, there is a false sense of validation as a performer and, in performing from such a young age, I became not only addicted to that but conditioned that, wherever I go, I’m gonna be applauded for it.” (05:42) “I think the biggest thing for me in life in general is just my awareness of the moment. My being present; my being where my feet are. And so, there’s a level of appreciation and gratitude that comes with, ‘Oh my goodness, look at what I get to do. Look at where I am. Look at the beautiful life that God has gifted me with.’” (14:27) “I realized that I had misdefined success. I was not successful. I thought I was. Success cannot be appreciated if you can’t enjoy it. You can’t call it success if that’s what’s happening.” (26:35) “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. That was a big one for me. I didn’t know how. Help is a phone call away. Check in with each other. Reach out to people that maybe you haven’t spoken to in a while. It was like Disneyland on acid at my dad’s house and ‘know which fork to use’ at my mom’s house.” (13:31) “I became the float counselor and then I became a Director and now I’m a part owner. Over the years I’ve sort of moved upstairs bit by bit. I’ve found that I’m capable of doing things I never ever thought I would be able to do: administrative work, systems improvement, chart auditing, resolving billable hours, all these things that I never thought would interest me.” (18:39) “I always had this idea that Mack can’t drive a stick. Mack can’t do this because of early conditioning that I was only capable of one thing. And, as they say in recovery, these old ideas that we have about ourselves need to be smashed so that we can create space for new skills, new interests, new ways of being.” (19:36) “When I think about my father and I think about my life, I think about generational trauma and inherited trauma. I think about the perfect storm of untreated mental illness, raging addiction and childhood abuse and neglect that we unwittingly pass through the generations. ” (22:46) “I think that we forget that we are light. We are light. We are electricity. We are power. We are love. And it’s the twelve principles of negotiating. And it speaks to the fact that, if you can listen - if you have the ability to draw out in another human being and understand their deepest anxieties and fears and their greatest hopes and dreams - and put yourself in the other person’s heart and mind, then you can create a deal, you can set a relationship, you can navigate through life gracefully.” (06:27) “My brothers and I were hardwired to believe that there were two critical values other than spiritual ones. And the first was to treasure relationships, especially family. The second was to make a meaningful difference in the world and target problems and help people who couldn’t help themselves.” (12:11) “Back in the early 90s I had held the first Concussion Conference. I brought together Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Warren Moon, Drew Bledsoe and a series of football players and talked with them about the dangers of concussions and try to raise awareness and think about prevention and ways to cut down on the number.” (18:12) “But the key is this, for a young person you need to find a way to distinguish yourself from other people. You need to do an internship or something unique. And so, to do that you need to put yourself in the heart and mind of the General Manager, the Owner, the Agent - whoever it is you’re going to work for - and figure out how you’re gonna enhance their life and make their life better.” (30:42) “The key to winning in...
