I am now offering spiritual direction sessions over Zoom. If interested, email me at thegraveyardcowboy@gmail.com

I am now offering a digital class on The Sedona Method, a system of emotional release. These are audio segments to listen to again and again. You can find it here: https://clint-sabom-s-school.teachable.com/p/emotional-release

I am Creative Director of Contemplative Light and host The Contemplative Light Podcast. I am an award-winning writer. I have published poetry and prose in various publications including The Tulane Review, Paste Magazine and Dabel Brothers. My paper Bunuel and Surrealism: The Changing Manifestations won best paper at the 2012 Conference of The Americas. I lived in Budapest, Hungary in 2003 as a Gilman Scholar. In 2007, I lived for six months in a silent monastery. I have studied and done my own work in Advaita Vedanta, Buddhism, Shamanism, NLP, CBT, psychoanalytic models, brainspotting, Integral Theory, body therapy, and sound healing. I went to Vassar College, and I've worked a good bit as a psychic.

In this podcast I break down Franz Bardon's masterwork Initiation Into Hermetics, which is a dense work with training exercises along the lines of practical spiritual alchemy.  It is something to good to sit on, and I feel a moral obligation to share it with fans.  Bardon is sometimes miscategorized as occult, but he himself doesn't consider himself that way but rather as a universal mystic with God and Jesus at the top of his cosmology.

Bill Epperly is a spiritual director living in Chicago and a longtime friend of Contemplative Light. His website is integralawakenings.com In his own words: "My story begins in New Providence, NJ, where I grew up a member of the Methodist Church. My Christian roots run deep, but from an early age, I was troubled by the idea that Christianity is the only true religion. By age 12, I was an agnostic and might have stayed one were it not for a reintroduction to spirituality in 1985 through participation in a 12 step group. Then, in 1987, I had a spontaneous and powerful “peak experience” of oneness with everything while attending a talk by Br David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk. In that moment of illumination, my story took an unexpected turn. I lost interest in my graduate studies and became a spiritual seeker. I began formal study of the Christian contemplative tradition and took up contemplative prayer. My interest in world religions grew strong and I read up on the lively interreligious dialogue between Buddhist and Christian monastics. This led me to become curious about zen and Zen Buddhism, which seemed the antithesis of theist Christianity. Encouraged by early experiences with Zen meditation, I decided to take up formal study of Zen, initially as a new Christian prayer form. My experiences of God and community life were so positive that I undertook three years of residential training at Zen Buddhist Temples in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Chicago. I left that community in 1993, but elements of that time of practice and community living continue to inform and enrich me. During those years I was introduced to Ken Wilbers integral approach and I have worked to create an integral approach to spirituality that draws on Zen Buddhist, Christian Contemplative, and modern psychologically-based spiritual approaches.Support the show (https://contemplativelight.org/)

But the enneagram is more than just a “personality typing system.”

In essence, the Enneagram is a form of sacred psychology, blending spirituality and psychology, offering an integrated path for personal transformation. My guest today is Amoda Maa. Amoda Maa is a spiritual teacher, offering meetings and retreats to support and deepen the living of an awakened life. She has been sharing her teachings since 2012, initially at small gatherings. Today, her teachings are followed by a growing number of seekers world-wide.

Amoda brings to her teachings a depth and breadth of understanding of the human journey, born out of her own immersion in the furnace of personal transformation. In 2002, in the depths of existential aloneness, she experienced a profound awakening in which there was a liberation of self from the knot of ego and an ongoing unfoldment into inner silence. After a long period of integration, in which all seeking and all methods stopped, she started to speak in public. Her teachings are free of any ideology and are not affiliated with any lineage or tradition. While she is often referred to as a ‘nondual teacher,’ she prefers to emphasize the full embracement of the human experience as a path to liberation. Her work continues to evolve in alignment with the real-life concerns of the modern-day seeker of peace and fulfillment in an increasingly chaotic world.

And I highly recommend her most recent book, Embodied Enlightenment. It’s been a big help to me. Our conversation had lots of good depth to it so hope you enjoy.

On this podcast, popular storyteller Kamla Kapur tells us about her own experience of the current world situation. She gives us an intimate portrait of her day-to-day quarantine life, full of panic and wonder, confronting death and giving thanks to Life. We discuss many themes of the coronavirus pandemic: our connection to the invisible, exploring the universe within, the energy of the earth, and the opportunity to relinquish the unnecessary attachments we’ve carried for too long. A soul made real through a rich life of suffering and triumph, Kamla Kapur blesses us with her human vulnerability in this episode.

Kamla K. Kapur is the author of Ganesha Goes to Lunch, Rumi: Tales Of The Spirit, and The Singing Guru. She has also published two books of poetry, As a Fountain in a Garden and Radha Sings: Erotic Love Poems, numerous short stories, and a series of award-winning plays. And the follow-up book to The Singing Guru, Into The Great Heart, will be coming out on the 28th of this month. She divides her time living in the Kullu Valley in the Indian Himalayas and in Southern California. Her books draw on the wisdom of the Hindu, Sikh, and Sufi traditions. Contemplative Light Co-Founder Marc Thomas Shaw won the Bronze Medal of The Illumination Book Awards. Clint talks to him about his process of writing, publishing, and marketing. Marc opens up about personal struggles and triumphs. This episode is great for anyone with an online business who is interested in publishing a book or anyone who has felt hopeless in their undertakings and doubted their own efforts. Marc’s book, Dante’s Road, uses Dante’s Inferno as a psycho-spiritual map through which readers can explore and re-imagine the narrative and themes of their own lives. It flowed out of him almost automatically, and despite self-consciousness regarding previous creative ventures, Marc maintained a quiet confidence and a divine trust with this work. It felt, according to him, important enough to work on even if his name was not affiliated with it. The difficulties of navigating the spiritual journey can make one want to give up on spirituality and God altogether sometimes, but Dante’s Road shows us pathways through the inner darkness and doubt, helping us recover a sense of fun and play and love for life’s adventure. Dr. Seth Farber is a revolutionary psychologist who has appeared on Oprah, Geraldo, Coast to Coast, and Alex Jones. In the spirit of Anton Boisen (the founder of pastoral psychology) and RD Laing (the pioneering psychiatrist), Farber's book, The Gift of Spiritual Madness maintains, as Joseph Campbell did, that mystics and schizophrenics swim in the same area of consciousness. The difference is that the mystic is swimming and the schizophrenic is drowning. A friend and colleague of many 60s hippie-era icons, our conversation moves accordingly, jumping and tossing allusions and laughter. If you lose the threads, worry not, notes and links and quotes are included on our website www.contemplativelight.com/podcastSome of the topics we cover:-the mad pride movement-Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" as a battle-cry for mad pride-the mental patient's liberation movement-when did psychology and psychiatry become too medicalized and why-Does the APA have special interests-Mysticism, madness, and the problems with our culture-a personal anecdote about Thomas Sasz (author of The Myth Of Mental Illness) and RD LaingThe Schizophrenic and Mystic are swimming in the same deep sea of consciousness. The difference is that the Mystic is swimming and the schizophrenic is drowning. This phrase serves as the general theme of the mad pride movement and the thesis of this episode. RD Laing, MD: A pioneering and controversial psychiatrist whose book, The Politics of Experience, broke new ground, honoring the spiritual component of what mainstream psychiatry labeled mental illness. A liberal hippie, Laing has not been incorporated into mainstream psychology like his colleague and rival Thomas. Szasz Thomas Szasz: author of The Myth of Mental Illness, a book that maintains the label of mentally ill is a form of social control. While both Tom and RD believed in that defining mental health in terms of adaptation to a unhealthy culture was inaccurate, Tom did not have the spiritual component that Laing did, and his inclusion in the psychological canon is perhaps due to the secular nature of the industry.Peter Breggin, MD. Author of Toxic Psychiatry, a book that exposed the financial motives of drug companies giving money to the APA and the corruption that drove the medicalization of the psychology field. APA: The American Psychological Association. Often just the gatekeepers of the APA format dreaded by grad students, there is more to the story of their influence than meets the eye.Support the show (https://contemplativelight.org/)

Much has been said, almost ad infinitum about this song. Here, I talk about the song as a move in the collective consciousness of America from Amber to Orange/Green. Was the day the music died, the day that old worldviews and traditional social conditioning suddenly no longer made sense? Sure, it was about the death of Buddy Holly, and sure, there are perhaps allegorical characters specifically mirroring cultural celebtrities, but as a whole, is this not a universal process of growth? For those who journey beyond religious literalism, do we not all experience the death and rebirth that in some way resembles the Americana-rich death portrayed in this song as a colorful masquerade? Hospice chaplain Michael Laird shares stories of clients. He says ninety percent of them have visions of "the other side" before passing on. Some see deceased relatives and ancestors; others see holy figures like Buddha and Jesus. All of the visions appear positive and function like assurances that a place is being prepared for them on the other side. This is a fascinating podcast because it is, in a sense, research into the dying process and can give viewers hope of a World Without End.For our free illustrated eBook on The Christian Mystics, go here. https://contemplativelight1.lpages.co/a-beginners-guide-to-the-christian-mystics/Support the show (https://contemplativelight.org/)

Trevor Oswalt (a.k.a. East Forest) is a unique bird in the Wild West aviary of electronic music. While his shamanic ambient electropop can be contextualized along with Aphex Twin, Philip Glass and Sigur Ros, the fundamental mission of his project is to create sonic architecture for others to explore their own inner space. Thus, it is a process of opening doorways for the listener to walk through, which takes patience. Patience, while typically thought of as kryptonite in the instant gratification, hyper-speed world of music, might just be the medicine we need. Nature indelibly made a huge impression on Oswalt, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He spent a decade in NYC, where he discovered indigenous traditions and began cultivating source recordings from sound healings and mushroom ceremonies. Eventually he started leading underground ceremonies across the country. Playing in the private shadows allowed the patient sound of East Forest to emerge: an emotional and spacious lexicon born out of a practical need to play solo for six hours, while guiding a room full of listeners in deep meditation. Word organically spread as a devoted community shared his early albums, leading to glowing nods of approval from the likes of NPR and Wired. He completed multiple tours across the U.S. and Europe and shared his mission on the stage of TEDx while performing in a diverse range of settings, from SXSW to Grace Cathedral, as well as private parties for the likes of Google. As his diverse catalogue emerged (14 releases total), the music evolved from extended, ambient jams to more concise, structured material with vocals – a vivid mix of the digital and analog realms with a social and spiritual underpinning. “I’ve always been inspired by the natural world and the psychedelic experience” Oswalt asserts, cementing his position on plant medicine, which he has often implemented in his recording process. “I prefer to operate where my intuitive musical mind can speak and something larger can come through.”Contemplative Light is a community of interfaith spiritual teachers rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition providing resources for the healing of persons.Contemplative Light. Paul Smith, author of Integral Christianity and Is Your God Big Enough? Close Enough? You Enough? talks with Clint about the dimensions of the Christian contemplative path, as understood and aided by an Integral perspective of state-stages and points of view. Rev Paul has contributed valuable insight that is essential for the future of Christian mysticism, incorporating much of the work of Ken Wilber, along with his own experiences of higher states of consciousness, to demonstrate that, yes, the Christian tradition has always allowed room for what Integral theory calls the causal, witnessing, and non-dual states. Some key take-aways for us were:-Often spiritual seekers who have pursued meditation into higher states in a tradition other than their own will experience stress until they make peace with the tradition in which they were raised. This is especially important for Westerners born and raised Christian who since abandoned Christianity for another path, yet continue to experience an unresolved anxiety.-Biblical references to "Spirit" translate best to what we would call "consciousness," allowing this usage of the word to account for what Buddhists might call "Emptiness" or "Oneness," and other traditions might call something else. There is no reason to think that you HAVE to stop following Christian tradition once you experience higher states.-Often people who practice centering prayer and contemplative spirituality have stopped praying altogether. Rev Paul has some great insights about approaching God in the first person (as God), second person (to God), and third person (about God). For more on what we do at Contemplative Light, check out contemplativelight.com

An Experiential Meditation on Evelyn Underhill's 5 Stages Of Awakening. What is life like after awakening? What are some of the signposts of this process and the shifts of spirit that happen along the way? The stages, while laid out in the most helpful model I've seen, are still only that, a model. They are not set in stone, nor is it essential to locate yourself in the exact phase: growth is rarely linear. Drawing on the tradition Benedictine model of Christian mysticism [1. Purgatio 2. Illuminatio 3. Unitio], Underhill expanded the Holy Road home to God into five territories that usually overlap:1. Awakening2. The Purgative Way3. The Illuminative Way4. The Dark Night Of The Soul5. The Unitive WayHer writings in her masterpiece work, Mysticism, utilize quotes from the saints and mystics of the past to illustrate the shifts and turns in consciousness that occur as our inner being awakens to the Presence of God everywhere all the time here NOW. Ultimately, it is a journey where Grace takes over our individual egos, and The Holy Spirit wakes up to Itself within us. We are only the vessels in which the transpersonal God makes Himself manifest in this earthly domain. Contemplative Light offers a course on the traditional Christian meditative practices:1. Lection Devina2. Centering Prayer3. Igantian Exercises4. The Jesus Prayer5. Christian Meditation Our course on contemplative practices can be found here.https://contemplativelight.teachable.com/p/contemplative-practice/?preview=logged_outContemplative Light is a community of interfaith spiritual teachers rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition providing resources for the healing of persons. A reflection and meditation on the special talents and gifts of Christian saints and mystics. What do contemplatives do well? Is contemplative growth a talent? Can it be your primary talent? He discusses the analogous relationships between Buddhism, Christianity, and the 12 steps, and how the 12 steps can serve as a process for internal transformation. His book, Finding God In The Body, is available on Amazon. For those unfamiliar, the 12 steps were originally created by Bill Wilson and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. They are now used as models for a variety of recovery groups, support groups, and spiritual circles for all kinds of psychological and spiritual transformation.

The hosts discuss the stages of Christian Mysticism, using the models of early Desert Father John Cassian and 20th Century Anglican writer Evelyn Underhill. This episode is rich in explaining some of the traditional models used in the mystical tradition that has always been in Christianity, throughout history, even if not often discussed in churches. The hosts also often candid feedback as to how (and if) these models apply to the modern Westerner trying to balance contemplative life with a hyper-stimulated socio-economic culture. This is one of our more interesting podcasts. Marc and Clint discuss an article by Ilia Delio that responds and (intelligently) critiques the theology of Richard Rohr.  But the discussion goes on, to a host of contemporary topics:1. Is Richard Rohr giving Christianity more relevance for posterity?  Is his Integral reframing of orthodoxy helpful or hurtful? Does it matter?2. Why are so many becoming disillusioned with Evangelical Christianity? Moreover, what is the appeal to progressive Christians of preachers who now simply bash conservatives as their entire platform?  3. How come some traditionalists become disillusioned in their early twenties, some go through a later adolescent individuation in their thirties, while still others seem to maintain traditional theologies even if they loosen up in their personal lives?4. Why the preoccupation with the person of Jesus? Is this simply a pure faith or is there a deep fear of hell behind salvation philosophies? Should we be afraid of hell? What was the big deal with all that publicity about a guy named Rob Bell?  Enjoy!
