Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, American Idol had to rethink how to execute the remainder of its season. On tonight's groundbreaking episode we saw something that has never been done before, the Top 20 contestants performed remotely from each of their homes. Ryan Seacrest hosted the show from his house, and the judges gave their critiques from their living rooms.

This innovative, never before seen format highlighted many of the Idol hopeful's talents, but unfortunately the remote filming did not showcase others' voices as well.

America's votes on tonight's performances will decide the Top 10 contestants, which will be revealed next week.

Tonight was our second and final Hawaiian episode, where we whittled down contestants to our top 21!  In an unprecedented twist, one extra contestant made it through, but the judges are leaving the decision of which additional contestant goes home to the fans. Viewers can vote for one of the final two country artists that made it through tonight to remain for a spot in the Top 20.  The artist that is not voted through will not continue to the live episodes.

We saw many more fan favorites go home tonight, as song choice, nerves, and not heeding the judges' advice seemed to be issues.

Tonight was the first of two American Idol episodes filmed at The Aulani Resort in Hawaii.  The sun, surf, and sand set the stage for the top 40 contestants to sing for their lives.

We saw the first half of Idol hopefuls perform tonight, and there were definitely some surprises. Song choice is proving to be extremely important, as many talented contestants were sent home due to picking the wrong songs for their voices.

We also saw individuals who had been previously struggling in the competition deliver phenomenal performances and make it through to The Top 20.

In tonight's Hollywood episode, the judges threw the contestants for a loop with another twist, the addition of duets in the competition!  For the first time in Idol history the contestants were asked to pick a partner as well as a song to perform together.

With this new show format we were able to see many unexpected collaborations. Some of the pairings showcased both singers' talents whereas others proved to not be strong enough to continue.

The 4th round of auditions was filled with a diverse set of hopefuls.

The episode kicked off with a tall surfer who had absolutely no idea who any of the judges were. We quickly moved forward from this shocking storyline with unexpected, amazing voices and heartfelt life stories. The judges did a lot more coaching tonight in order to bring out the best in each auditioner. They sent a lot of people to Hollywood tonight in hopes that they’ll work very hard to prove themselves more in the second round. The episode ended with two of the best voices of the night; a small town guy that was just fulfilling a promise and a girl that was fighting to get her life back. We have one more round of auditions and then it’s time for Hollywood week!

American Idol is an American singing competition series created by Simon Fuller and produced by 19 Entertainment, and is distributed by FremantleMedia North America.  It began airing on Fox on June 11, 2002, as an addition to the Idols format based on the British series Pop Idol and has since become one of the most successful shows in the history of American television. For an unprecedented eight consecutive years, from the 2003–04 television season through the 2010–11 season, either its performance or result show had been ranked number one in U.S. television ratings.

The concept of the series is to find new solo recording artists, with the winner being determined by the viewers in America. Winners chosen by viewers through telephone, Internet, and SMS text voting were Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, Phillip Phillips, Candice Glover and Caleb Johnson.

American Idol employs a panel of judges who critique the contestants’ performances. The original judges were record producer and music manager Randy Jackson, pop singer and choreographer Paula Abdul and music executive and manager Simon Cowell. The judging panel for the most recent season consists of country singer Luke Bryan, singer Katy Perry, and singer Lionel Richie. The show was originally hosted by radio personality Ryan Seacrest and comedian Brian Dunkleman, with Seacrest continuing on for the rest of the seasons.

The success of American Idol has been described as “unparalleled in broadcasting history”. The series was also said by a rival TV executive to be “the most impactful show in the history of television”. It has become a recognized springboard for launching the career of many artists as bona fide stars. According to Billboardmagazine, in its first ten years, “Idol has spawned 345 Billboard chart-toppers and a platoon of pop idols, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Adam Lambert and Jordin Sparks while remaining a TV ratings juggernaut.”
