About the Artist:
Charles “ChuckJay” Walker is from San Jose, CA where he and his three sisters were raised by Charles and Felicia Walker. Brought up in the church by a COGIC State Organist father, Charles was heavily influenced by Gospel music. He went on to graduate from Gilroy High School where he started his choir journey, and went on to study music at West Valley College and San Jose State University. He then started producing music and playing piano in 2015, after his father’s passing. He moved to Grand Junction, CO in 2016 for a fresh start and new beginnings.
Wave 11, one of Grand Junction’s premiere bands, was formed in 2017 with former bandmate Zack Couron. Wave 11 released an album “Wisdom and Strength” and performed at many big festivals and local venues in Colorado. The band now consists of Derek Suiter and Charles Walker, providing a new high-flying hip-hop show that’s bound to make you jump!
Charles also teaches private lessons for vocal singing, music production, songwriting, drums, piano, and music theory. While working at The Winery, he enjoys being able to provide music influence to the community of Mesa County and plans to continue music excellence at the highest plateau possible. He lives with his wife Zoe and daughter Winnie in Grand Junction, CO and enjoys being with family and friends.

In this episode of the Audissey we're joined by Friends of the Library member Cheryl, and Mesa County Libraries' Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator Kelsey. We discuss the library's used bookstore, A Novel Idea bookstore, which is run completely by the generous time and efforts of library volunteers. Kelsey and Cheryl also share all of the volunteer opportunities that are available at the library.
Friends of the Library
The Friends of Mesa County Libraries is a committee of Mesa County Libraries Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity formed exclusively to support Mesa County Libraries. The Friends main function is to focus public attention on the library and to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services.
Used Book Sales
The Friends operate A Novel Idea bookstore, located in the west hallway of the Central Library. Additional book racks are at the Clifton, Fruita, and Orchard Mesa branches.

The Friends of Mesa County Libraries are hosting weekly clearance book sales 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., each Friday and Saturday, from April 22 through May 14 at the First Congregational Church, 1425 N. 5th St. (across from Grand Junction High School). All sales are cash only.

In this episode of the Audissey we’re joined by local musician and library staff member Kris Petross. Kris shares his passion for drumming and his experiences as a musician from practicing in his youth to being on tour after graduating high school.
We also discuss the upcoming Drum Clinic that Kris will host at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 11 at the 970West Studio, 502 Ouray Ave, Grand Junction, across the street from the Central Library. Stop by and participate in exercises where we’ll learn the basics of a drum kit, different drum styles, and how to keep tempo. Attendees of the drum clinic will have the opportunity to learn different approaches to the instrument, discuss drum techniques with other musicians, or just be entertained. In part two of the episode, we sit down with library staff members Rachel and Andrea as they share their love of Dungeons and Dragons. We discuss what’s appealing about Dungeons and Dragons from its versatility in the campaigns, the wish fulfillment in building characters, and the sense of community and friendships you can make with fellow nerds.
Rachel and Andrea are hosting a Teen Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master Workshop. Teens are invited to learn how to acquire or improve their Dungeon Mastering skills. This 3-hour workshop is designed to cover Dungeon and Dragons Master basics such as basic rules, creating a story, creating a party, and managing a party.
This workshop is designed to help people who may have an interest in Dungeons and Dragons, to explore Dungeon Mastering, and what it takes to create your own story and manage your own party. This event takes place from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, March 5 in the Central Library Monument Community Room. Jill Burkey is a poet, writer, and editor living on the Western Slope of Colorado. In her poems, which circle around the themes of nature, relationships, history, and spirituality, Jill explores the larger existential questions of humanity, and makes connections between life, the natural world, and the passage of time. We are delighted to have Jill as our 970West Studio Artist in Residence now through April 18, 2022.

About the Artist:
Jill grew up on a three-generation cattle ranch in western Nebraska and began writing in high school. She earned a BA in English, business administration, and secondary education at Nebraska Wesleyan University and has taught hundreds of elementary and high school students poetry and writing as a writer-in-residence with the Colorado Humanities’ Writers-in-the-Schools program.
Jill’s poems have been called warm, complex, and intensely satisfying, and they have appeared in Sixfold, Pilgrimage Magazine, Paddlefish, Soundings Review, Front Range Review, Grand Valley Magazine, IMPROV Anthology of Colorado Poets, The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, and others. Two of her poems were included in The Untidy Season: An Anthology of Nebraska Women Poets by Backwaters Press, which received the Nebraska Book Award for anthology. Jill’s work also won the Mark Fischer Poetry Prize and other awards and honorable mentions. She is currently working on her first collection of poetry, Enough.

In this episode of The Audissey we say farewell to our lovely co-host, Emmi, as she sets sail on her next adventure as the new Library Marketing & Communications Coordinator for the City of Lafayette, CO.
Starting as a Library Page to becoming a Library Assistant for circulation, leaving the library to return as one of the Artists in Residence shortly after, then finally marketing all that Mesa County Libraries has to offer as a Communications Coordinator; Emmi shares the impact libraries have had on her life and some of the fun memories she has acquired along the way.

The Forensic Investigation Research Station (FIRS) at Colorado Mesa University is a research, teaching and service center that focuses on forensic taphonomy, law enforcement, and other related fields. Dr. Melissa Connor, Ph.D., the Director of FIRS, was appointed Director in 2012. Coming from Nebraska Wesleyan University where she was director of the Master of Forensic Science program, Dr. Connor brings 30 years of archaeological experience and 20 years of forensic science experience to FIRS.
Dr. Connor specializes in forensic archaeology and is the author of Forensic Methods: Excavation for the Archaeologist and Investigator. She sat down with our hosts and shared her experience in archaeology with the National Park Service including the research on the Little BigHorn battlefield, and her work with the Physicians for Human Rights including investigations conducted in former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and Cyprus. We also discussed some of the misconceptions of FIRS, what makes Mesa County an interesting place to host a forensic science investigation research station, and how FIRS provides a variety of important training tools for CMU interns. The Retired Senior Volunteers Program or RSVP works in partnership with over 60 local non-profit organizations to fill important volunteer needs by recruiting individuals age 55 and over.
We’re joined by Maggie Sanders, the Senior Scholar Project & Office Manager at RSVP, to talk through all of the services and resources RSVP provides. In Maggie’s words, “If you’ve gone into a non-profit in Mesa County, you’ve most likely run into an RSVP volunteer.”

About the Artist:
Nestled in the bosom of the Colorado National Monument with desert peaches blooming in the palisades, Savannah Ashmore found herself inspired by the flourishing nature that filled her childhood. Her artistic expression began as a young child and it has evolved as she grew older into a ritual of self-care and healing. The continuous expression of self is an important theme in her creation and a genuine, organic stream of creation is crucial in the work she makes.
Savannah graduated from Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration in 2018. She currently resides in Grand Junction, Colorado. With her calico and mixed breed border collie by her side, Savannah will continually create and illustrate her way through life. Head of Adult Learning Emily and Adult Learning Specialist Eusebia sat down with Bethany (Emmi got her wisdom teeth out!) to discuss how the Adult Learning Center provides services to adults at no charge. The Adult Learning Center truly changes lives. Whether a Mesa County Patron is looking to learn/improve their English, complete their high school diploma, or complete the citizenship exam, ALC can help them achieve their dreams.
The Adult Learning Center offers education programs to adults at no charge. Classes are taught by trained instructors and involve one-on-one or small group instructions for adults looking to improve reading, writing, math, and study skills. Help is available to get your high school diploma (GED and Career Online High School), complete the citizenship exam, and learn English as a second language (ESL). This program protects the rights of individuals with disabilities by providing equal access to programs and services.
The Adult Learning Center could not function without our paid and volunteer instructors, and Mesa County Libraries is grateful for all who contribute to such a successful program.

Sue Ellen Rodwick of the Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies sat down with host Bethany to discuss how the food bank increased food distribution, staffing, partnerships, and adjusted their food model to serve more Mesa County residents since March of 2020.The food bank’s services aren’t limited to the Grand Valley. Rachel is an illustrator and graphic designer with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from Colorado Mesa University. She is grateful to have grown up surrounded by the rich and beautiful landscape that is Mesa County. In her own words, “I create my whimsical and vibrant art in watercolor and through digital media. A lot of my work involves quirky character designs. To me, the most inspiring thing in the whole world is nature, especially plants and animals, and I often incorporate these elements into my work. Whether I'm designing my own hybrid creatures, or creating custom portraits, I am always looking for opportunities to add a creative twist.”

Mesa County Libraries is launching a new, all-ages diversity reading experience May 1 (this Saturday) via Beanstack!
Staff members Brevin, Elizabeth, and Trevor sat down with our hosts to talk about this new experience.
• The Mirrors and Windows reading experience is a celebration of culture, focused on diverse books and films offered throughout our catalog. This idea stems from a movement called Read Woke started by Georgia-based school librarian Cecily Lewis.
• The title of this program, Mirrors and Windows, was adapted from a famous essay written by Rudine Sims Bishop, titled Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors.
• This reading experience emerged out of Mesa County Libraries' commitment to diversity and anti-racism and our Year of Focus.

THE MASK YOU LIVE IN follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's narrow definition of masculinity.
Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become "real" men.
Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the "boy crisis" and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

Isolation is bad for everyone. Health-wise, isolation is the same as smoking 15 cigarettes every single day.
Since March 2020, we’ve all experienced some of the negative effects of isolation. What we don’t realize is that sense of loneliness we’ve felt for a few months is actually many people’s everyday lives.
The Mesa County senior population needs quality nutrition and socialization. Amanda DeBock, Program Manager of Meals on Wheels Mesa County, sat down with Bethany and Emmi to discuss how this SCL Health sponsored-program changes lives right in our neighborhood. This mostly senior-volunteered program delivers over 500 meals a DAY to individuals 60+.
Enjoy this uplifting episode and learn about how Meals on Wheels Mesa County has pivoted their services to continue providing healthy resources to our seniors with frozen meals, contactless deliveries, and new partnerships with local food banks.

Have you ever read an article from The Onion and laughed? Have you then observed a family member share that same article on Facebook, believing it was fact? How do you politely let her know what she's sharing as "truth" is actually satire?
Information Literacy and Digital Literacy sound like big, scary, words the average person wouldn't use. But when it comes down to it, Information Literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.
In a digital age where information is being shared quickly and without second thought, we need to build up our Digital Literacy, which the ALA defines as: “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.”
Basically, using technology appropriately and effectively.
Bethany and Emmi sit down with frequent guest and Librarian Ike to discuss misinformation, disinformation, confirmation bias, and maybe the most important ways to combat the spread of falseness and intent to harm: Fact Checking and the CRAP Test (no, seriously).

On our first ever Community Conversations episode, Bethany and Emmi sat down with the Tremaine Jackson, Head Football Coach at Colorado Mesa University. Hired in late 2019, Coach Jackson has navigated a wide variety of changes not only related to how he adapted running practice of a team of 100+ players due to COVID-19, but on a community level opening up a dialogue of being uncomfortable, participating in peaceful protests, and raising the acknowledgement of racism in the Grand Valley. Settle in for a conversation about race relations and bias and how we as a community can use our resources to learn, discover, create, and connect with everyone around us.
