With all that this life can throw at us, it is extremely common and expected that we would grapple with some tough questions about struggling. Why do bad things happen? How can I possibly love people who have hurt me so deeply? If I'm saved from sin, then why do I still struggle with it? Over this six-week series, we'll be wrestling with fundamental questions about who Gods says we are and what He wants for us in this life and beyond. We are glad you are here with us as we recognize together that the struggle is real!

Paul writes another letter to the Corinthian church, but instead of a harsh stone like in previous letters, this is one of warmth and encouragement. Paul’s focus in this letter is for the church members to understand how a life of ministry looks in the midst of suffering and persecution.

John writes to the church at Ephesus in order to warn them of the dangers of living a sinful lifestyle while acknowledging being a follower of Jesus Christ. Before the believers can address whatever sin issue they may be struggling with, they must recognize God as the true Light. Understanding God as light will help lead the believers to repentance in order to restore a fractured relationship with God back into a harmonious one.

Isaac had twin sons, Esau, born first, and Jacob. Jacob cheats his older brother out of his birthright and the blessing from their father. To avoid Esau's anger and threats, Jacob flees to his uncle, Laban. He works for 20 years in exchange for livestock and marriage to Laban's two daughters. God urges Jacob to return home to Canaan. Now, Jacob must face his brother.

Living in a peaceable manner with other believers is a necessity for Christians. In doing so, we are able to exemplify the love of Jesus for others to see (both believer and unbeliever). The issue at hand is that it is not always an easy task. James gives instruction on how we can do so in order to be united as believers.

In the Gospel of Matthew, the account of Jesus walking on water follows immediately after the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus wants to teach the disciples about trusting Him to provide for their needs and the lesson is a hard lesson to learn, but it is one that teaches them the importance of trusting Jesus as more than just a teacher, but trusting Him as their Lord.

Paul used a first-century hymn which Christians used in their worship of Jesus as God and for His supremacy over creation, the Church, and in their salvation to prime his audience for his counter to the false teaching at Colossae.

We live in a world that seeks to perpetuate destruction, corruption, and doubt. The weight of the world seems to be on our backs. Evil is glorified and good is reviled. Somedays we're not even sure we're fighting a battle worth fighting for. And yet there is a God who desires to remove our burdens and make sure we are renewed, righteous, and certain in Him. In Becoming, we're discovering more about how God transforms us into new creations to give us life and become like Jesus.

All the themes of this book relate to our human experience. This covers the search for meaning through money, power, success, pleasure, and much more. All of these attempts fall short. “Under the sun” is a key phrase, used 28 times in the book. Life that is only lived “under the sun” and not in view of eternity, is devoid of ultimate meaning. The best human efforts, philosophies, achievements, experiences, and arguments will not bring satisfaction. Apart from God, life is full of weariness and disappointment. Life with Him is full and satisfying. He brings purpose, even to our tears and pain. Only in God can we find meaning and increase our joy.

In the encouraging letter that Paul writes to the church at Philippi, Paul challenges them to remember, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Because of that, Paul stresses the importance of unity as a church family. Unity is only achieved as all believers in a church family choose humility and show grace to one another as they move forward together for the sake of the Gospel. Just in case they were not clear on how humility looks, Paul writes a beautiful description about Jesus, the Son of God, being the perfect example of humility to exemplify.

When is worship acceptable? The only way we can discover this is to see how Scripture defines it. As David Peterson writes, “We cannot simply determine for ourselves what is honoring to God.” We need a biblical and theological perspective. Of the ways God has revealed himself—creation, Conscience, Christ—he has given us objective truth in the written Word. Through these 7 weeks, we will consider a minute portion of what the Bible declares or demonstrates about worship. This is a crucial subject for every single follower of Jesus. Why? As Erwin Lutzer stated: “If we haven’t learned to be worshippers, it really doesn’t matter how well we do anything else.” May we become the kind of worshippers that God the Father seeks.

Paul continues to address the church at Corinth in how their spiritual gifts must be used in a public worship (church) setting. He primarily focuses on the gifts of tongues and prophecy specifically in order to encourage the church to always think big picture in selfless ways and how their gifts can be used in an agape type-loving manner in order to help build up the church.

The prophet Isaiah brought a message to God’s people more than 700 years before Jesus was born. Isaiah warned of God’s judgment for the nation’s lack of obedience and insincere worship, and called them to turn from their sin. Eventually, Israel would experience destruction of their homes and cities, and be carried off as captives to a foreign land. But part of Isaiah’s message promised a better future. A time when a Spirit-filled deliverer would bring relief. Centuries later, Jesus declared that he was the answer to this promise (Luke 4:17-21).

This study seeks to define what a Spirit filled local church actually is, and to get you to be a part of it. There are competing definitions and methods for how to define it, but which one is right? What if we look to the Bible alone to answer this question, and what if, in finding the answers in Scripture, we do the things God has called us to do individually? Would we find ourselves to be a part of a Spirit filled church? Make sure you go to God in prayer first.

One day, in God’s presence, you will be fully like him (1 John 3:2). Until that day of perfection, your growth in Christ-likeness won’t happen accidentally. It takes intentionality. Through this seven-week study in Luke’s Gospel, we are pursuing this together as an assembly of God’s people.

Asaph and the sons of Koreh were also major contributors, while Solomon, Moses, Heman, and Ethan are also named. In 48 cases, the author is not identified. The seven psalms in this study have a survival theme. In each one, the human author expresses some desperate longing or need. We can identify with these feelings of abandonment, fear, guilt, and distress. These honest songs have much to teach us about how God works during such times.

God permits trials, God controls trials, and God uses trials for His own glory. God is glorified through weak vessels. The missionary who opened inland China to the Gospel, J. Hudson Taylor, used to say, “All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on Him being with them.”

This parable deals with the content of our prayers. Here are two men who went to the Temple. The Pharisee was ostentatious in his posture during prayer, by implication raising his eyes to heaven (see v. 13). How important it is that we approach God humbly. When we refer to ourselves in prayer, it should be to confess our sins, not boast of our virtues!

Outwardly, the Pharisee was holy. He lived a good, religious, moral way of life. Yet God had no time for his self-centred gratitude. The tax collector (or ‘publican’) on the other hand, just beat his breast, saying ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ This second man ‘humbled himself’ and went home ‘justified’ (v. 14)—that is, God proclaimed him as righteous in his sight. Why? Because of his humility before God. The Pharisee, however, was still in his sins, however good he appeared to men.

In their book on the Ascension of Jesus, Tim and Aaron Perry write: “A lot of otherwise completely orthodox and very devout people don’t bother with the Ascension because, frankly, it’s hard to swallow….After all, are we really to believe that a literal flesh-and-blood Jesus defied gravity and really rose into the air until a cloud hid him?” The answer they give is yes! The Ascension has profound implications on how we live.

This series focuses on the “I AM” statements Jesus made, recorded in the Gospel of John. Even by itself, the phrase “I AM” was incendiary. That was the name of God revealed to Moses (Exodus 3). When Jesus referred to himself this way, people tried to kill him for blaspheming (John 8:58-59). Seven other times, Jesus attached a descriptor to this phrase. Each of those descriptions reveals something significant about his identity and character. If you want to know who Jesus is, learn the I AMs. If you want to become more like Jesus, live the I AMs.

The book of Judges covers a time when God’s people repeatedly turned away to worship other gods. This led to oppression by foreign armies. In desperation, God’s people cried out for deliverance. God responded by sending great leaders (Judges) to restore peace and spiritual faithfulness. But after every judge died, the people went right back to disobedience, and the cycle started over again. This last section of the book (chapter 17-21) focuses on a period after the last judge (Samson) has died. The time of sin and rebellion chronicles several broken things. Each is relevant to our lives today.
