The large modern mine is automated, and the maintenance staff are reduced, which means that the modern plant requires a closer cooperation between man and machine. Modern plants are also closely monitored off-site and in real-time for efficiency, metal accounting, and preventative maintenance.
The technology already exists where a ‘war room ‘ in a central location can monitor all of their operations and warn the site of impending issues such as bearings running hot or the mill being overloaded, etc. The auditing of plants is a requirement to protect the shareholders investment, and you can only manage what you measure.
It is thus critical that the weighing instruments such as the conveyor belt scales are calibrated and maintained to a certain standard and at a level required by current acceptable corporate governance practices relating to auditability and transparency of metal accounting from rockface to product. Marcel Barnard, General Manager & Sales for Process Automation joins Mining NOW to outline where Process Automation comes in?

25 years ago Tom Palangio stepped away from his position at Dupont to further develop his fragmentation analysis technology. He had developed the technology in partnership with Waterloo University specifically for measuring rock blasts but quickly found multiple applications in the aggregate industry. Seeing potential competition Dupont and Tom reached an agreement that he would not operate in North America for 3 years. As a result he went to Panama as a blast consultant during the construction of the Panama Canal, then continued to expand his distribution network in Peru, Chile, South Africa, and Australia before returning to Canada.
Although the global travel led to excellent exposure across the world for WipWare products and services; because of the agreement with Dupont they had little exposure in Canada. Tom had to build his local business presence after being gone for over 3 years and as an added challenge his rural 150 acre property with dial-up internet offered significant challenges in communicating with his distributors. True to his “solve the problem” form, Tom connected with Bell Canada and negotiated to have high speed internet brought in, even becoming their poster boy for entrepreneurial capabilities in rural Canada. In 2015 on a Friday afternoon, Ed Lingel got off the phone with the founder of Daequip and told his wife they had just bought an attachment manufacturing company. With her support (and his gratitude for that is very clear in the interview) he took the company from where the former owner ran it as a one man show with a handful of employees to a full service heavy equipment attachment company with designated teams, updated equipment, and a new machine shop.
Most people will say business is all about relationships, but some people live it. During the interview it became clear Ed knows how to both work with people and how to get them onside. He sees that ability as something he naturally had going as far back as highschool hanging out with multiple groups from jocks to skaters but then it was further brought out and refined by extensive training and hands on experience working as a major account manager at Finning. From the the original owner, to his wife, to his first business partner at Daequip who passed away suddenly at only 57, to taking on a new partner, all while building up his company and establishing inroads with new customers, building relationships it isn't just talk for Ed, it truly is “everything”. The history of hemp goes back thousands of years. There was a time in the United States that some farmers were required to grow hemp because it was a much needed resource to make many products. Fast forward to the 1900s and hemp was banned alongside Schedule 1 drugs. Then the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 proposed a law to remove hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) from Schedule I controlled substances which would make it an ordinary agricultural commodity. Its provisions were incorporated in the 2018 United States farm bill that became law on December 20, 2018. Now, although individual states are still able to ban hemp, they cannot ban cross-state transport…thus the story of hemp continues.
Ola Lessard from the US Hemp Roundtable and Barleans joins The Crownsmen Podcast to discuss both the history and future of hemp. She discusses the role of the US Hemp Roundtable which serves as a lobbyist organization on behalf of the hemp industry, and she outlines the role of its’ sister organization the US Hemp Authority which serves as a certification body to preserve integrity and quality within the industry. Ola is also VP, Marketing & Communications of Barleans who has expanded their business into the CBD Hemp Oil space.
This episode also explores the United State’s complex relationship with Hemp as Ola talks about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell becoming an unlikely ally in removing hemp from the Schedule I controlled substances list. We look at how education has begun to shift people's attitudes towards hemp and allowed it to separate from cannabis in public perception. Most importantly how states that are commonly conservative such as Kentucky have realized the opportunity for struggling farmers who can now grow a crop because hemp allows multiple harvests in a year, has a stronger resistance to pesticides, and is a comparatively easier product to grow. According to a US Hemp Corp, in 2017 23,343 acres of hemp were cultivated that year across the United States. In 2018, that sum swelled to 77,000 acres. There are few (if any) agriculture sectors that are growing at a comparable rate and farmers have a new opportunity to grow a renewable crop with high returns. As the industry grows the stigma of hemp also is beginning to disappear and uses for hemp products continue to be explored. With rapid growth there is a demand for industrial scale harvesting and production equipment. Corbett Hefner - Vice President R&D for Formation Ag joined us to explore the industry, the machinery they have developed, and the product itself.
Tradesmen International serves industries that include construction, manufacturing, power, heavy industry, mining, and skilled workers in both the United States and Canadian markets. Since 1992 when Joseph O. Wesley, an electrical contractor from Northeast Ohio, recognized first-hand the vast need for a new construction staffing paradigm to deliver superior construction labour to the contractor’s workforce they have expanded to 200 offices in the United States and now have an office in Canada which David hopes will increase to eight or nine. Labour is always a major cost on any project and efficiency to maximize profits is always the goal. The type of service Tradesmen International provides leads to the question…do we truly have a labour shortage for skilled workers and trades or do we have an efficiency shortage that leads to employment volatility?
Not many people would dispute innovation needs investment and that R&D is as necessary, as it can be challenging, for companies trying to compete on a global scale. Governments have long developed programs to help incentivize companies to invest in updating and advancing their technology. However, even for large companies understanding where they fit into incentive categories, what type they are eligible for, and even when to apply is complex. Jacqueline Gustafson with KPMG helps us explore different options by explaining the categories of R&D incentive programs and highlighting various bodies that make the final decisions of who gets funded. Here is some basic incentive information and government targets that every business should know. Watch Podcast Here: https://youtu.be/nVsUyIZlqZU

Welcome to the world of robotics in the industrial sectors! Today on the show Afshin Doust the CEO of AIS (Advanced Intelligent Systems) joins The Crownsmen Podcast to give incredible insight into how they have developed both an IoT platform and used AI technology to fulfill labour shortages and optimize efficiency challenges in agriculture and more specifically in horticulture.
In the interview Afshin explains how the IoT platform helps AIS robots learn from each other and make decisions about the behavior required through its artificial intelligence capabilities. He lays out how the company has evolved its products and their business model. AIS now has two products ready for market including robots fully equipped for moving and spacing plants. They have another ten in the works including pruning and shelf moving robots. This is all built off a subscription based business model so customers up front cost is minimal and they essentially only pay based on usage.
With rising labour costs in both North America and Europe and a decrease in willingness to do repetitive and labour intensive jobs, robotics companies provide a strategy for industry to offer higher skill level jobs without the physical demand. But what is the risk of robots replacing humans? Afshin points out that at one time you hit zero and a live operator came on the line. Now with all the automation telecommunications employees more people than ever before.
Partnerships have been key for AIS. Their manufacturer, Valid Manufacturing, and distributor, Agrinomix, are both also investors. Afshin outline how those partnerships developed and what each brings to the table. He offers his own outlook on how to maintain partners and resolves resolve conflicts. In many ways this episode is as much about leadership and successful collaboration as it is about technology and innovation. Watch Ep 25. https://youtu.be/rYl9puHt6B8

In 1951 Kinder Morgan began laying a pipeline across the Simpcw First Nation’s land. How was the deal negotiated? By a government official that spoke on behalf of the Simpcw people and Chief and Council was only symbolic. This was during a time when residential schools were considered the norm, and the Indian act controlled almost every aspect of Indigenous People’s lives. This history is where we started our interview with Keith Matthew who is a former Chief and Council of the Simpcw First Nation, a successful businessman, and member and founder of multiple organizations that are working to build economic opportunity for Indigenous People across BC.
Fast forward from 1951 to today and Keith’s community is now a power house of industry, negotiating with Kinder Morgan to secure maintenance and safety contracts for hundreds of kilometers of pipeline, partnering on a 7 million heli ski lodge investment, building up their forestry sector, and working with Canadian hydro developers. Keith has played many key roles along the way and offers deep insight into how deals get done and why so often disputes end up in court. Watch episode here: https://youtu.be/IjsksJg-WTg
Where do we go from here? This question is being asked across almost every spectrum of society. It is not easy to answer but a good place to start is by hearing what true experts in their perspective fields have to say. A major topic within major industrial sectors like mining, energy, and forestry is these industries responsibility to the environment. For those who work in heavy industry the question is also how can we responsibly manage the environment while keeping major industrial sectors competitive on a global scale? Peter Krahn who is currently running a Nomination Candidate - North Vancouver for the Conservative Party of Canada has served as a Sr. Enforcement Engineer and National Operational Adviser for Environment Canada for over 35 years and to say he is an expert on industrial environment responsibly and enforcement would be an understatement considering her literally helped write the book on environmental forensics to support Canadian and global enforcement of environmental laws.
Peter talks about early memories of being a kid fishing and pulling garbage out of the river, in one case finding a twenty dollar bill. Coming from an immigrant family without much extra cash that was not a small amount of money for a young boy to find. In some ways it seems to still represent his view of what it means to be a conservative. To conserve, not just for the bottom line but for our environment. Over 35 years Peter has worked with saw mills to reduce their environmental impact, he has made recommendations to the fracking industry to ease environmental damages, he has been part of the team responsible for dealing with oil and chemical spills into waterways, and he has dealt with mines to raise their environmental standards… all while wanting industry to move forward. Internationally he was a project leader to develop an international environmental forensic investigation manual specifically targeted for developing economies on behalf of INTERPOL. Peter has also worked as an independent environmental consultant through Genesis Environmental Sciences. This all comes with a BSc in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Lakehead University and Undergraduate from University of British Columbia in Biology and Chemistry. This impressive resume makes Peter the perfect expert to really dig in and help us understand how industry and environmental concerns can collaborate and even thrive. In December of 2018 Global News released an article stating that total national Caandian wealth hit $11.415 trillion in the third quarter, and at $8.752 trillion, real estate made up a 76-per-cent share of that figure. This staggering statistic made it clear to us that we need to have episodes that are focused on real estate, and being that we are a heavy industry show, we need to zero in on commercial real estate. Cory Wright, Founder and CEO of William Wright (a boutique style commercial real estate company) laid out in a clear way the reality of how commercial real estate works, the challenges, and the misconceptions people have.
Commercial Real Estate Topics
Cory Wright has spent years in the real estate business, working for other firms and now for 6 years running his own. Like many experts he can unpackage complex issues and make them easy to understand and help us realize that what we thought were simple can be complex and may have a hidden downside. Perhaps at times real estate becomes such a normal part of our lives that we only rely on news headlines and quick google searches to inform us. But if you run a business, rent a home, or want to invest in property this episode will give you in depth information to help you take advantage of the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls.
Watch the Show! https://www.crownsmen.com/podcast/ Our goal in this episode was to have an honest conversation about both the past and future of heavy industry’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. Our guest Frank Antoine breaks down how mines affect local communities, individual support and opposition to pipelines, and negotiations for harvesting timber on traditional land. In this unique show Frank gives new insight into leadership, Indigenous heritage, and how we build culture as a country.

How well do mines “know the rock” they are drilling and blasting? The Internet of Things is changing the mining landscape and automation continuously to integrate into systems across all sectors. We sat down with a company who has integrated autonomous solutions, IOT (Internet Of Things), cloud data technology, and digital high resolution imaging into a system that accurately provides rock characterization in iron ore and next bench down predictions for base coal. In other words the technology informs the mine operator in real time how to maximize their drilling and blasting. CEO of Data Cloud https://datacloud.com,Thor Kallestad https://datacloud.com/company/ joined The Crownsmen Podcast to talk about how they pivoted into mining from oil and gas and how their company has delivered a new technology into the complex world of mining.
Fleet management systems continue to evolve and as electronic logbooks and vehicle tracking become mandatory, small to large fleets will be required to implement telematics into their fleets. Telematics encompasses telecommunications, vehicular technologies, for instance, road transportation, road safety, electrical engineering (sensors, instrumentation, wireless communications, etc.), and computer science (multimedia, Internet, etc.). When delivered correctly the technology makes a driver's life easier, their vehicles safer, and helps transportation companies operate more efficiently and become more profitable. Dan De Palma - VP of Sales & Marketing at Streamline sat with us to unpackage the scope of what telematics covers in modern day transportation.
Founder and CEO Eric Beckwitt joins the show to not only talk about his company but the bigger picture of how electrification in the freight industry will lower emissions. If you ever worked in logistics you know the process of organizing commercial shipping is finding the best rates (based on your required shipping schedule) and after multiple inquiries choosing the best carrier… time consuming and expensive. If you are environmentally conscience you know transportation and specifically freight makes up a large percentage of global emissions. The issue becomes a network of carriers with high emissions trying to compete against each other but ending up with about 30% of their loads empty. In many ways it was only a matter of time before someone tackled both issues and through an online platform Freightera has in a big way! Watch this episode here: https://youtu.be/tykMB5O5piQ
