In Sports, Villanova Football’s home opener is Saturday. We previewed their game against Colgate and also looked forward to opening week in the NFL! Each crew member made their Super Bowl prediction on the record.
With Chris visiting family for a special moment in the North Woods of Wisconsin, it was up to Nick Williams, Becky Grzywacz, and Mike Oberschewen to fill in his large shoes, but they did so wonderfully! The crew broke down whether or not they'd pay to fly in a "no kids zone", and discussed their Labor Day Weekend plans in our Twitter/X poll question. We also pondered wedding etiquette.
Our special guests were Katie Brumbaugh and Will Thompsen of Villanova's Campus Activities Team. Katie and Will gave us a taste of some Labor Day Weekend events happening on campus, what Villanova students can look forward to as far as CAT events are concerned for the rest of the Fall academic semester, and how students can become a part of CAT!
Finally, we previewed Villanova football's opening matchup at Lehigh and discussed music and movie news, including the crew's takes on Barbie and Oppenheimer.
A new academic year has begun at Villanova, and so has a new season of the Morning Roar!
To kick off the Fall semester, a whole new Morning Roar crew convened on Friday. Our lone incumbent team member, Station Manager Chris Cokinos, welcomed Taleen Postian, Mandy Love Ledbetter, and Nick Williams, for their first time hosting the Morning Roar, and they were awesome!
The crew exchanged their goals for the Fall semester and discussed whether watching TV with captions on is really a thing for Gen-Z'ers.
In our Twitter poll question, we asked you what you thought of Cafe Nova's new collaboration GrubHub.
The crew also discussed what their go-to sleep position is.
Our special guest was Student Body President Tom Dessoye, who talked about the goals the Student Government Association intends to carry out in the 2023-24 academic year.

On Villanova's Move-In Day 2023, WXVU broadcasted live all day, interviewing several different Villanovans, and providing news and a soundtrack for first-year students and their families.
WXVU's David Szczepanski interviewed Special Olympics Fall Festival Director Moira Horan. Together, they previewed all that is in store for the 35th Fall Festival, happening at Villanova this November 3-5.

In the 16th episode of WXVU's latest podcast series, ProfCast, WXVU Business Director Ryan Dery interviewed Ian Clausen, Ph.D., Assistant Teaching Professor and Editor within the Theology department at Villanova. Ryan talked with Dr. Clausen about his doctoral thesis in Theology from the University of Edinburgh, his Villanova curriculum, his areas of research, and much more.

In the 15th episode of WXVU's latest podcast series, ProfCast, WXVU's Nick Langan interviewed Stephen Strader, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor in the Geography and the Environment department at Villanova, and the Geography Program Director. As both a hazards geographer and atmospheric scientist, Dr. Strader has been recognized nationally for his research efforts in severe weather hazards, including mobile and manufactured home vulnerability in tornadoes, as well as how the recent upward trend in disasters is predicated on increasing exposure and vulnerability of populations. Nick discussed these research areas with Dr. Strader, along with Dr. Strader's M.S. and Ph.D research at Northern Illinois University. They also talked about the recent uptick in tornadic activity that has taken place in the Delaware Valley since 2019, and whether or not it should be attributed to climate change. Dr. Strader also discussed his course curriculum at Villanova, and what drew him to the university to conduct his research. It was a fascinating conversation that will captivate both those interested in weather and atmospheric hazards, and those just wanting to learn about some of the most cutting edge research taking place at Villanova right now.

On the last Morning Roar of the 2022-2023 academic year, Chris, Allison, David & Dom broadcasted live from the Belle Air Terrace stage in the Connelly Center! The crew kicked around what they enjoy most about summertime in our Twitter poll question, and they each came up with one item they enjoyed most about the Spring semester. Special thanks to ace photographer Nick Williams for coming by again to capture the scene!
The Morning Roar Mind Bender championship prize was awarded to Dom, and we played Cinco de Mayo trivia between Dom and Allison, the two departing members of the Morning Roar crew.
Father Peter called in as our very special guest! He recapped the semester, previewed the Class of 2023 commencement with speaker Lester Holt, and reflected on the challenges the Class of 2023 faced during their time at Villanova. We heard about where Villanova is at it in its strategic plan, and we even got to ask Father Peter whether he is a shore person in the summer. (Spoiler: NO!)
Finally, and most importantly, we gave Allison, our WXVU station manager, a fitting send-off, with a poem read aloud by Chris, David & Dom!

The second to last Morning Roar of the academic year was a doozy, literally! Derek Anthony Wilson, a Villanova favorite from his performances at Villanova home men's and women's basketball games, was our special in-studio musical guest! Friday marked the day of the release of the new album from Derek's band, Archpalatine, called Doozies to Daisies. Derek spoke with the crew about the album, his musical background, and what's in store with Archpalatine, and then he played two songs for us to enjoy in studio, "Be Alright" and "Hypnotized"! We can't get enough of his music and can't wait for Derek to join us again in the Fall!
The Morning Roar crew also discussed whether or not they ate their veggies as a kid, and we did a roundup on how ChatGPT has been impacting our semesters. Dom says don't sleep on it!
In sports, Chris had to face the music on his beloved Milwaukee Bucks' shocking first round exit.
Finally, our Morning Roar Mind Bender took place with a championship on the line - did Dom clinch it?
For COM 3240, Performance for Social Change, students Emmy Schmelter and Kaitlyn Eddy gave a live performance on WXVU playing the roles of Villanova students and professors to address wealth and economic status on campus. This was their final presentation for the course, and it aired on April 27 on WXVU.
In the 14th episode of WXVU's latest podcast series, ProfCast, WXVU Station Manager Allison Bajada interviewed Deena Weisberg, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Villanova. Dr. Weisberg earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Yale University, and her BS in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University. Dr. Weisberg discussed her doctoral research, her focus areas, including Developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and cognitive science, her Villanova curriculum, and much more in her conversation with Allison.

Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing, and the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania VU chapter.
WXVU Sports Director Patrick Scanlon, WXVU's Nick Langan, and Ryan Scanlon, a manager on the football team, spoke with Wildcats' Head Football Coach Emeritus Andy Talley, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Coach Talley was inspired by an interview on the radio he heard in 1992 to start what would become a long-standing tradition of uniting his football players to promote the awareness of marrow donor registration. He reflected on this with Pat, Nick, and Ryan, the registry's success stories, and how Coach Ferrante has helped to extend the tradition at Villanova. Coach Talley also discussed the current state of Villanova sports, Brian Westbrook's induction into the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this year, and how listeners can stay engaged with his Bone Marrow Foundation.

Pat, Nick, and Ryan spoke with Coach Ferrante about continuing the tradition originally started at Villanova under Coach Andy Talley with his Bone Marrow Foundation, and how much of camaraderie and character building exercise it is for his players to host the registry event. Coach also reflected on the 2022 Wildcats' football season, gave us some information on how spring practices are currently unfolding, and a look ahead at the 2023 football schedule, including the matchup against FBS opponent UCF.

On Wednesday, April 19, WXVU broadcasted live from the Connelly Center for the 15th annual Get In The Game-Be The Match bone marrow stem cell registry initiative, hosted by the Villanova University Wildcats football team, with the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing, and the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania VU chapter.
WXVU Sports Director Patrick Scanlon, WXVU's Nick Langan, and Ryan Scanlon, a manager on the football team, spoke with former Wildcats' standout football and baseball player Matt Szczur. On the 2009 championship winning Villanova Football squad, Szczur was a consensus first team All-American, CAA Offensive Player of the Year, CAA Special Teams Player of the Year, first team All-CAA performer, and MVP of the national championship game.
Szczur joined the national Be The Match registry as a freshman at Villanova. In the spring of 2010, he donated peripheral blood cells to a young leukemia patient who only had a 1-in-80,000 chance of finding a match. Szczur missed 10 games during the baseball season due to medication taken in advance of making his donation. He's one of just three Villanova football players to be a match for a patient since head coach Andy Talley began his association with the NMDP in 1992.
Szczur went on to have a 5-year career in the MLB, including 200 plate appearances on the 2016 World Series winning Chicago Cubs.
Szczur discussed his career, his time at Villanova, being selected as a donor, and what he's doing with his life now with Pat, Ryan, and Nick.

Jake registered for Be The Match, and was selected as a donor back in February. He spoke with WXVU about the impact this initiative has and his time at Villanova so far.

It was a chamber of commerce type weather morning on the campus of Villanova University, and the Morning Roar crew took advantage, broadcasting outside at the Riley Ellipse (aka the Oreo), in honor of WXVU's WXV Needs U fundraiser with a bonus hour! We saluted all donors who have contributed so far, and played incredible audio from Villanova radio alums, including Ian Bush, Jeffrey St. Pierre, Joe Gallagher, and Mary-Beth Fay. The fundraiser has been a major success and will ensure radio at Villanova continues to thrive!
In the first hour, we analyzed digital hoarding, and in our Twitter poll question, we discussed what are the best places to study on Villanova's campus.
Our special guest in the first hour was Whitey Rigsby, VU Class of 1978 and broadcast voice of the Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team on the radio for 43 years. Whitey currently works as a Senior Major Gifts Officer for the Villanova Athletic Fund. Whitey was incredibly generous with his time, and talked to the crew about his 3-year career on the Villanova basketball team, his favorite moments calling Wildcats' basketball games, and gave advice for those aspiring for a career in sports broadcasting.
In the bonus hour, Ryan Dery joined the crew and talked with Allison about how the duo teamed up to save the stray cat on Villanova's campus, Austin.
Our second very special set of guests was Taffy the Dog, a 2-year-old female yellow Labrador/Golden Retriever and Villanova’s first full-time “community canine” and therapy dog. Taffy's caretaker, Officer Amy Lenahan from Villanova Public Safety, came by to talk about Taffy and how Villanova community members can soon make appointments to see her!
We discussed relaxation techniques with finals approaching, and even got some talk in about fidget spinners. Another epic episode!

Connor Fawcett of WXVU's Alt Rock Shock had a chance to sit down with guitarists Aaron, Andrew, and bass player Jake from the band Wilt. Wilt is based in Los Angeles and has been getting tons of attention on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. They currently have 3 singles out on Spotify and during the interview, some things we spoke about upcoming releases for singles and EPs, Andrew’s killer mustache, recent music releases in the Alt Rock scene, and their very tattoo-able merchandise. We spoke about the bands variety of musical influences stemming from shoegaze and indie as well as grunge and their shared love for Queens of The Stone Age.

The crew returned from their Easter breaks for another spirited episode of the Morning Roar! In the first two segments of the program, David, Dom, and Chris discussed their satisfaction (or lack thereof) with the course registration process for the Fall 2023 semester. Our poll question explored which fictional character you'd like to be for a day. And we broke down some truly bizarre ice cream flavors.

In this podcast, AJ will discuss entries in the law school's first-year student blog with their authors. AJ is a graduate of Montclair State University, holding an MA in Law and Government.
In the 1st episode, AJ talks with Julia Smith, a first-year Villanova Law student from Aston. Julia is in the midst of writing her third blog piece as part of the Villanova Law's Center Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation. Julia has written about difficult issues to address, from sexual exploitation to domestic violence. AJ discusses these topics with Julia and more.

And last but not least, at 8:45, we were joined by our broadcast crew of Jacob Artz and Zac Tipton, live from Greenville, SC! The guys gave us an excellent breakdown of the Villanova-Miami Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament matchup, the first time the women's team has made the Sweet 16 since 2003. They also discussed Maddy Siegrst's place in Villanova basketball history, and detailed their experience of calling women's games for WXVU this historic season.

On St. Patrick's Day 2023, it was a Morning Roar to remember!
Chris, Allison, David & Dom honored Deena Leh, our beloved WXVU staff advisor and Villanova's Assistant Director of Media Programs. It was Deena's last day at Villanova, as she moves on to a wonderful opportunity in multimedia at the Community College of Philadelphia.
Deena and the crew shared stories and reminisced on all of the amazing things WXVU has accomplished under Deena's leadership! Then, there was not a dry eye in the studio, as a collage of gratitude played from some of Deena's former media students (Deena advised WXVU, VTV, the Villanovan, the Belle Air Yearbook, and Tech Crew).
If that wasn't all, the amazing Derek Wilson of the band Archpalatine made an in-studio appearance and performed a tribute song for Deena! It was spectacular. Derek sang at multiple Villanova home basketball games this season, performing an outstanding rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing". He'll be doing so to open up the women's NCAA Tournament action at the Finneran Pavilion on Saturday!
We also had plenty of St. Patrick's Day content, talked about what you wish you would have known when you were in grade school and middle school, and had an Irish trivia round for our mind bender. David struck back!

Dr. Arapis received his Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy from the Auburn University, his M.P.A. from Kennesaw State University, and his B.S. in Economic Science, University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece.
From his Villanova website biography, Dr. Arapis has devoted himself to preparing the next generation of public administrators for an ethical, accountable, and transparent public service career. Both will be competing in Villanova's A Cappella Palooza, at the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse on March 17. Kaleigh also reflected on her advocacy for sight disability and her efforts as a singer/songwriter, as listeners of WXVU will surely recognize with the outstanding material from her EP, Karma!

Are the Cats back? We say yes! In a lunchtime showdown at the Wells Fargo Center, Villanova (15-14) showed off their best form of the Kyle Neptune era, with a convincing 79-67 win over Creighton (18-11). Eric Dixon scored 18 of his career-high 31 points in the first half while Cam Whitmore added 17.

The IBS College Media conference is in New York City this weekend, and Chris Cokinos joined us live from Times Square! WXVU is up for 5 different awards. Chris set the scene with the crew and discussed what he's looking forward to most at the conference.

- President Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Zenenskyy on Monday. With the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaching, this visit is a powerful symbolic show of support for Ukraine.
- Former President Jimmy Carter has entered into hospice care. The former president is 98 years old and was the 39th president from 1977 to 1981.
In the second episode of WXVU's latest podcast series, ProfCast, Business Director Ryan Dery interviewed Ryan Weldzius, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor in the Political Science department at Villanova. Dr. Weldzius received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, his M.Sc. in Economics and Management Science from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, M.A. in Politics from New York University, and his B.A. in Political Science from DePaul University.

- Bloomberg reported on Sunday that International Atomic Energy Agency monitors have detected evidence that Iran has enriched an unknown quantity of uranium to 84 percent. Uranium that has been enriched that high is close to the traditional “weapons grade” level of 90 percent or higher.
- The Israeli military carried out a missile strike on Syrian on Sunday morning, killing at least 15 people in what the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights characterized as its “deadliest” attack on Damascus since the start of the Syrian civil war.
- The Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allows Ukrainian grain to bypass a Russian naval blockade, may be breaking down. The rate of inspections of ships leaving the Black Sea has reportedly dropped to half of what it was four months ago, which has meant more cargo ships waiting for clearance and less Ukrainian grain getting to market.
On this week's Morning Roar, the crew of Chris, Allison, David, and Dom, discussed the latest on the incident Tuesday Night on the R-100 SEPTA train that stopped at Aldwyn Lane near the Villanova Commons and led to an armed suspect fleeing and a shelter in place being issued.
Student safety was one of the subjects we discussed with our very special guest, Kathy Byrnes, the VP for Student Life at Villanova. In a wide-ranging conversation, the crew asked Kathy about the current state of the Villanova student experience, recent student fan behavior at the Wells Fargo Center, opportunities for diversity and inclusion, and events planned for the remainder of the semester, including Friday's Winter Gala. We also got a peek into what Kathy is currently listening to, outside of WXVU, of course.

In the 3rd episode of WXVU's So You Have A Podcast series, Business Director Ryan Dery talked with Liam and Halal Sam, one half of the Gladio Free Europe podcast, a podcast that describes itself as sort of a movie, sort of a history podcast. They discussed what makes a historical movie good from bad, and some of the limits of presenting historical events in movies.
In a wide-ranging, in-depth conversation, Ryan asked Liam and Sam their inspiration for starting Gladio Free Europe.
The trio pondered if certain historical eras lend themselves to film more than others, and Ryan asked Liam and Sam what their favorite movies that depict the following eras/events:
- Antiquity: Egypt, Greece, Rome, China etc.
- Middle Ages: “dark” ages, Vikings, Crusades, high Middle Ages
- Early Modern: colonial Americas, American revolution, French Revolution
- Modern: Civil war, WWI, WWII, Cold War, etc.

- A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria early Monday morning. More than 2,500 people have been killed and thousands more injured.
- On Sunday, the Peruvian government expanded its state of emergency to seven provinces. Intense protests have rocked the country since the ousting and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo in December.
- Iran will pardon or commute the sentences of a large number of prisoners as part of an annual amnesty, state media reported Sunday, although it is unclear how this will apply to people arrested in the recent wave of protests.

- On Saturday, a US Air Force F-22 aircraft shot down the Chinese balloon that flew over the US earlier that week. The balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina. The US Navy is attempting to salvage whatever remains of the balloon. The US government claims that this balloon was sent to spy on military installations while the Chinese government maintains that it was a wayward weather balloon. This incident is sure to raise tensions between the two nations at a time when relations are already strained.
- Last October, when the Supreme Court heard arguments about race-based affirmative action, the six Republican-appointed justices seemed ready to ban it. A ruling is expected by June. One big question is how colleges, the military, and other organizations will try to replace the current programs.

Our special guest was Rashel Batista, President of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service planning committee, who graciously joined us to talk about how the MLK Day of Service fared. Rashel is an ambassador with Villanova's Office of Intercultural Affairs, so she also discussed some of the wonderful events happening on campus to celebrate Black History Month.
The crew received a stern talking to from the show producer concerning some snarky remarks regarding the "At the Movies" segment.

In the 2nd episode of WXVU's So You Have A Podcast series, Business Director Ryan Dery had an engaging conversation with Chris Wade. Chris has produced the Chapo Trap House podcast since 2017. He co-hosts the Hell of Presidents and Hell on Earth podcast with Matt Christman, and started the And Introducing podcast with Molly O'Brien.
Ryan talked with Chris about his start in college radio with Northwestern University's 89.3 WNUR, and how the industry looks with podcasting looming so large now. They discussed how Chris got involved with Chapo and Chris gave us some stories behind the scenes of the podcast. Chris also talked about his preparation for the Hell of Presidents series and both US presidents that deserve more recognition, and those that are gassed up a bit too much.
Ryan and Chris also detailed Hell on Earth, and who some of Chris' favorite characters are from the 17th century.
Finally, they discussed the And Introducing podcast, including the changes that the music industry has seen that are reflected in the series, including the seminal moment that was September 11.

In a 12 PM matinee tip-off, Villanova hosted Georgetown in a Big East men's basketball showdown on Martin Luther King Day. Nothing has been easy for the 'Cats in 2022-23, but in a hard-fought affair, they prevailed over the Hoyas, 77-73.
Patrick Scanlon was back with the play-by-play, David Szczepanski added color analysis, and Stephen Cain provided studio pre-game, halftime, and post-game coverage, as part of WXVU's sports broadcast team.

On Sunday, January 29, Villanova took on Providence in a men's basketball matchup at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, on an incredible day for sports in the City of Brotherly Love. Villanova (10-10) was looking to reassert itself in the Big East against the conference leading Providence (16-5), ranked 17th in the country overall. Villanova led at the half and went back and forth with Providence in the 2nd half. As has been all too familiar for the 2022-23 Wildcats' squad, the game slipped away quickly in the final minutes, and the Friars prevailed, 70-65.
The spirits were not dampened for long for the Philadelphia faithful, however, as minutes later, the Eagles took on the 49ers in the NFC Championship game at the neighboring Lincoln Financial Field, and advanced to the big game.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 10, Route 30, also known as Spring Mill Road, between County Line Road and Montgomery Avenue, will be closed Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Local access will be open for ALL Spring Mill Road parking lots and West Campus lots during construction. Please allow extra time, as this closure will be in effect through Thursday, Sept. 28.
In other news, low-wage workers in Pennsylvania are missing out on the pay hikes that took effect in 23 other states this month. Almost 8-and-a-half-million people are getting higher wages, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Although Pennsylvania is surrounded by states with higher minimum pay, state Senator Art Haywood says the General Assembly, particularly the House, has refused to rise above the current federal minimum wage of 7-dollars-and-a-quarter ($7.25) per hour. Haywood thinks that might change, however, since newly elected Governor Josh Shapiro supports raising the minimum wage.
Haywood states, “I’m very optimistic because now, the House has new members. And those new members, I believe, most of them are committed to raising the minimum wage. So, this last election really may give Pennsylvania the opportunity to catch up with the rest of the states in this region.”
Wednesday, January 25, Villanova will be welcoming Curtis on Tour to the Mullen Center for the Performing Arts, as part of the ACS concert event series. WXVU will be broadcasting the concert live at 7 PM!
The Curtis Institute of Music is a private conservatory in Philadelphia that is one of the most prestigious to study music in the world. For more than 10 years, Curtis on Tour artists and ensembles have delighted audiences around the globe with performances that are “exhilarating from beginning to end” (Washington Post).
WXVU's Nick Langan had the opportunity on January 20 to speak with the six performers (two Curtis instructors, four current Curtis students) who will be featured at the Curtis on Tour show at Villanova. They are:

At 8:30, we were honored to be joined by Dr. Alicia Strandberg of the Villanova School of Business. Dr. Strandberg is the director of VU Women In Tech, and the crew discussed the upcoming VU Women In Tech Conference, happening next Saturday at the Inn at Villanova.
They recapped their winter break and went over if any New Year’s resolutions were set.

In its first Big East matchup, Villanova (6-5) took on the St. John's Red Storm (10-2) at the Finneran Pavilion on a cold winter's Wednesday Night before Christmas. After falling behind in the 1st half, the Wildcats played their best half of the season to date in the 2nd half, prevailing 78-63 and extended their winning streak to 5 games under new coach Kyle Neptune.

NOVAdance has partnered with OSI for a Silent Disco to celebrate the end of the semester! The Silent Disco will take place in Cafe Nova on Friday, December 9 from 8-11pm. Additionally, be sure to check out the Holiday Market and Night Village on December 12th from 3-8pm at the Oreo! This new annual tradition features food trucks, local vendors, a beer garden, photo ops and entertainment. Come shop, eat, and be merry at this festive Villanova event!
In other news, every year Villanova asks residents to complete an assessment about their Resident Assistant (RA) and general perceptions of life in the residence halls. Student’s participation in this survey is critical in providing Residence Life with feedback on staff, progress towards strategic goals, and satisfaction with the hall community. This survey will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Radnor Township is seeking to fill a vacancy for a commissioner in the 4th Ward, following the recent resignation of Commissioner Lisa Borowski. Borowski was elected in November to serve as a state representative of District 168, which consists of Radnor, Newtown, Edgmont and Middletown townships. However, she resigned her position as commissioner of the 4th ward on Nov. 28. Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest or resume to the Office of the Township Secretary at 301 Iven Ave., Wayne , PA 19087 by Friday Dec. 9. Candidates must be a resident and registered elector in the 4th Ward for a period of one year immediately prior to the appointment. All interested individuals will be asked to present their candidacy to the board of commissioners at the Dec. 12 public meeting.
In other news, Cabrini University is hosting a send-off party for graduate student Alysa Bainbridge, who will compete in the Miss America contest on Dec. 15 representing Pennsylvania. Bainbridge, a native of Leesport, Berks County, has been competing and winning pageants for years. She is the first Miss America candidate to attend Cabrini.
So You Have A Podcast is WXVU's brand new podcast, interviewing various people...about their podcasts!
In the inaugural episode on December 7, 2022, WXVU's Business Director, Ryan Dery had the great opportunity to interview Matt Christman. Matt is a co-host of the political Chapo Trap House podcast.
In an hour long conversation Ryan and Matt discussed how Chapo Trap House has evolved, as well as the political and cultural currents the show has done the best job of exploring.
Matt and Chris Wade also collaborated on the Hell of Presidents podcast, a completed series looking at the history of U.S. Presidents. Ryan talked to Matt about the inspiration for that podcast, and Matt's research and recording process.
Matt and Chris also created the Hell on Earth podcast, which Ryan discusses with Matt. The podcast is a 10-episode miniseries that will launch on Jan. 11, 2023 on the Chapo Patreon. The show will tell the story of the Thirty Years War, the cataclysmic outbreak of violence in central Europe that lasted from 1618-1648.

- The Turkish military has spent the past week laying the groundwork for a possible forthcoming invasion of northern Syria. Turkish air power and artillery units have been bombarding targets linked with the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia. This would be at least the third Turkish invasion of Syria.
- The past few days have seen what appear to be significant protests across China sparked by frustration over the Chinese government’s “Zero-COVID” policy and its attendant lockdowns. This has been arguably the most intense outburst of public discontent since Xi Jinping became Chinese president in 2012.
- The Biden administration has given Chevron permission to resume “limited” energy operations in Venezuela, which could be the first step toward bringing that heavily sanctioned country fully back into the global oil market.

All residence halls and apartments will close at noon on Wednesday, December 21. Unlike other vacation periods during the academic year, residents are not permitted to remain in their rooms or apartments over the break unless they are approved through the Winter Break Housing application process. The Winter Break Housing application will be available tomorrow on November 29. For reasons of safety and security, requests to return to campus prior to that date and time not associated with University approved activities will not be approved. However, students are permitted to leave their belongings in their room. University residence halls and apartments will remain closed until Saturday, January 14th at 9:00 am. Residence life would like to remind students to remove all perishable food items from storage areas, recycle and discard trash in appropriate receptacles, close and lock all windows, and leave heat set to ‘on’ and no higher than 72 degrees.
In other news, Father Peter recently sent out an email explaining Villanova’s commitment to a community that is free from substance abuse. If you or someone you know struggles with drug and/or alcohol dependence, the University can help coordinate or provide counseling and education through a variety of programs. For students, the University offers services through the Dean of Students Office in Dougherty Hall, or the University Counseling Center and the Office of Health Promotion, both located in the Health Services Building. For members of the faculty and staff, the University provides an employee assistance program made available through Human Resources that includes referral and counseling services. A new pop-up outdoor ice skating rink is set to open Tuesday night in Delaware County. Delco River Rink will have a ribbon cutting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday along the Chester Waterfront at 777 Harrah’s Boulevard in Chester. Delaware County Council, Flight Entertainment, Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack, and local elected officials will participate in the ribbon cutting. The rink will officially open to the public Dec. 1 and run through Feb. 26. Guests will find a full-sized recreational outdoor skating rink under a pavilion, food and drink, festive music, lighting, video and decor, and a heated indoor Ice Garden Bar & Event Space available for corporate and private rentals. The rink will also host special community days and family friendly events while it’s open.
In other news, the community is invited to the Wayne Business Association’s annual tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in downtown Wayne. The festivities include carriage rides, crafts, carolers and, topped off with the arrival of Santa. On Saturday, Dec. 3, the community members are invited to Radnor Memorial Library’s annual Shelves for Elves Fun Run and 5K beginning at 8 a.m. at the library on West Wayne Avenue. Registration is available at 7 a.m. in the library’s Windsor Room.

On November 11th, a group of Villanova students was subjected to racial slurs yelled from a moving vehicle. Since the incident occurred on Ithan Avenue, it was officially referred to Radnor Police, who have jurisdiction over that roadway. At this time, there is no information to suggest that a member of the Villanova community was involved in this matter. Although the incident does not seem to be an act by members of the Villanova community, and the roadway is not campus jurisdiction, Father Peter stated those details are of little to no importance. He explained that what does matter is that members of our community were made to feel unsafe, intimidated and dehumanized within the borders of campus. Father Peter stated, “As a University community, we must fervently condemn this behavior. And as an Augustinian Catholic institution, built upon the ideals of Veritas, Unitas and Caritas, we will not tolerate any form of racism or prejudice on our campus or within our community.”
In related news, President Fr. Peter Donohue recently sent out an email requesting student participation in an important survey regarding student perspectives and experiences related to the climate for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Villanova. The University wants to understand how well they are doing in promoting and supporting the community’s commitment to creating connections across different genders, races, cultures, faiths, beliefs, and orientations. The survey is anonymous and will take about 10 minutes to complete.

Radnor Township is collecting gifts for children and adults throughout the community. The town is collecting unwrapped toys in a “Toys for Tots” campaign as well as toiletry items and non-perishable food in partnership with Wayne Cares for Wayne Food Pantry. Items for both causes can be dropped off at Radnor Township Municipal Building, 302 Iven Ave. by Friday, Dec. 2. The township police department is also collecting gifts for the Saint Edmond’s Home for the Children, a home for children with intellectual disabilities in the Bryn Mawr section of the township. Items include art supplies, baking supplies, socks, and gift certificates to Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Dollar Store and Target. The gifts can be dropped off at the Radnor Police Station, 302 Iven Ave., by Dec. 16.
In other news, on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Radnor there are three small brick and concrete arch bridges near the Sacred Heart Academy. These bridges were built 117 years ago and one of them is in the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges carry 10,515 vehicles daily, according to PennDOT. The work on the bridges was part of a $7.7 million project to restore seven bridges in the Philadelphia area. Preservation Pennsylvania noticed the 1905 bridges’ rehabilitation and awarded PennDOT two Ralph Modesku Awards for Excellence in Transportation, Design, Perseverance and Archaeology.
As part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, Villanova (2-1) took on Michigan State (2-1) at the home court for the Spartans, the Breslin Center in East Lansing, MI. The Wildcats staged a valiant effort in the 2nd half to make for an intense last four minutes of action. The Spartans hung on in the 73-71 thriller, but the future looks bright for Kyle Neptune's squad.

The Intercollegiate Irish Dance Festival is happening at Villanova Saturday, November 19! We welcomed Christine Nass, Associate Director for Performing Arts at Villanova, and Ellen Hagerty, a sophomore Civil Engineering student and part of Villanova's Irish Dance Team, as our in-studio guests. Christine and Ellen talked about what is planned at the Irish Dance Fest, including a schedule of competitions, featuring participants from the following institutions:

- 2 people were killed on Tuesday when what the Polish President described as “most probably” a Russian-made projectile landed in a Polish village. Officially the US and other NATO states are saying that they cannot confirm whether or not this was a Russian missile. The Polish government has apparently invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which calls for consultations within the alliance and is substantially less escalatory than invoking the Article 5 provision for collective self-defense
- US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met this tuesday for roughly 3 hours. The summaries of the meetings released by the two sides afterwards revealed on-going divisions over key issues like Taiwan, human rights, technology and trade.
- The United Nations estimates that the global population crossed the 8 billion threshold on Tuesday.

The Inter-Hall Council and the Office for Residence Life are excited to announce the Fall 2022 Room Decorating Contest! The rules are as follows: All participants must currently live in an on-campus residence hall. Entries will be judged on the basis of the photographs submitted by the residents. In submitting a photo, residents give permission for any images taken during this process to be used and promoted by the Office for Residence Life on social media and other forms of digital and printed publications. Additionally, winning entries may be asked for permission to have photos taken of their room. Participants will be judged by members of Student Life & Inter-Hall Council. Two winners will be selected and given a prize! Submissions are due by December 7th at 5pm!
In other news, All residence halls and apartments close for Thanksgiving Break from Wednesday, November 23rd at 12pm through Sunday November 27th at 12pm. Any student wishing to remain on campus between those dates must fill out an application in order to retain Wildcard access to their assignment. Only those residents who submit their application and are approved by the Office for Residence Life via email will be permitted to remain in their housing assignment between the above dates.

On Saturday, November 19, the Christmas Village will be open from 10 am to 3 pm at 230 Pennswood Rd, Bryn Mawr, PA, 19010. All are welcome to enjoy an outdoor European style Christmas Village with sparkling lights, delicious food, festive live music, and a variety of select vendor booths to begin Christmas shopping. There will be an exciting selection of vendors including Children’s Book World of Haverford, Painted Sky Alpaca Farm & Fiber, Fairhope Graphics, Kendra Scott Jewelers, the WW Collection, Bridget Rose Fine Stationery & Designs and The Sweet Trading Co. of Narberth. The Jules Pizza truck will be on site and selling food and refreshments. A portion of all proceeds from the Village will go to Redeemer’s outreach efforts benefitting community organizations addressing social needs.
In other news, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at 555 Lancaster Ave, is offering a special three-course meal or Thanksgiving Day meal featuring Herb-Roasted Turkey, Filet Mignon or Prime Bone-In Ribeye. It includes all of the Thanksgiving fixings and desserts. Cost is $57 for adults and $25 for children. Reservations are available online or by calling 610-688-9463. Founding Farmers in King of Prussia Town Center is also preparing for a special Thanksgiving takeout and dining in experience. On Thursday, Nov. 10, the restaurant began taking pre-orders for “Heat and Eat” takeout and reservations for inhouse dining. WXVU was thrilled to have in-studio saxophonist Andrew Neu for a wide-ranging interview. WXVU's Nick Langan talked with Andrew about his internationally renown recording career, which includes time touring with Bobby Caldwell, Diane Schuur, Norman Brown and Smokey Robinson, the Philly Pops, and as an arranger with the Brian Pastor Big Band and the Dave Stahl Band.
Andrew was born and raised in the Philadelphia area and still resides here today. He has released four Smooth Jazz CDs, and in 2018, released the album "Catwalk", a big-band jazz CD recorded at the famed Eastwest Studios in Los Angeles.
Andrew began conducting the jazz ensemble at Swarthmore College in 2014, and he’s conducted the jazz program at Lower Merion High School since 1999. His brother, Peter, conducts the jazz ensemble right here at Villanova!
We had a blast discussing how he got into jazz, Andrew's instance on using live instruments in his recordings, to his latest single, produced by keyboardist Greg Manning, "Take It Home", which we are proud to be featuring prominently in our Smooth Jazz mix on WXVU.

On Monday, a 45-year-old Royersford woman was sentenced in the Chester County Justice Center to one to three years in state prison for using a stolen Girl Scout Troop debit card to pay her lawyer $525. Shelly Gaugler was also ordered by Chester County Judge Ann Marie Wheatcraft to serve four years of probation following her prison term. Gaugler was convicted in absentia of using a Girl Scout Troop debit card in 2019 to charge $525 to a law firm in Pottstown to pay her bankruptcy attorney. The defendant failed to appear for her scheduled trial after receiving notice to attend and she fled to Virginia. Gaugler was convicted of identity theft, access device fraud, and receiving stolen property.
In other news, the Pennsylvania Department of Health announced it is suspending operations at Delaware County Memorial Hospital on Monday. In a statement issued Friday night, Delaware County officials said the decision to close the hospital is because of inadequate staffing. Just last month, a judge granted a temporary injunction preventing Crozer Health from closing the hospital and turning it into a behavioral health facility. The county said it is now exploring all legal options to try to keep the hospital open.

John graduated from the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia in May of 2021. He is an instructor at Rowan University and received both his undergraduate and masters degree in guitar performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. By age 16 he had garnered over 20 prizes at guitar competitions.
Lenny earned his Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has won prizes in the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Musicians Competition, the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Competition, and the James Stroud Competition.
WXVU's Nick Langan interviewed John and Lenny. They discussed their career paths, including a shared experience at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. John and Lenny also describe their passion for teaching music. They are each members of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society. Finally, they give us a sneak preview of what we can look forward to at the Mullen Center.

The 34th Fall Festival will be taking place this weekend on November 4-6th. The Special Olympics Pennsylvania Fall Festival is hosted and organized by Villanova students and is the largest annual student-run Special Olympics event in the world. Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides year-round sports training and competition for more than 20,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics is an international organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in 26 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. Be sure to check out Fall Festival events this weekend all across campus on Saturday and Sunday!
In other news, the application process for students interested in joining the resident assistants team for the Spring 2023 semester and the 2023-2024 Academic Year have opened! Zoom information sessions are available to meet with some current RAs to learn more about this opportunity. All fall Zoom links are also available on the Residence Hall Life web page under “RA Selection Timeline.” There will also be additional information sessions in January if you are not able to join this week. All candidates will need to submit a Cover Letter and Resume with their application.

PECO plans to start installing a gas main installation on Conestoga Road at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov 9, PennDOT announced Friday. Conestoga Road between Mill Road and Ithan Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m through 3pm weekdays until Monday, Jan. 9. During the closure, drivers will be directed to Route 320, also known as Sproul Road, U.S. 30 which is Lancaster Avenue, and County Line Road. Local access will be maintained up to the work zone. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur.
In other news, dozens of people attended a special dinner in Berks County that benefitted the visually impaired. The Berkshire Country Club, in Berks Township, hosted the “Dine in the Dark” event on Thursday night. Diners were blindfolded so they experienced what it was like to maneuver a meal without their vision. Proceeds from the event went to the Vision Resource Center of Berks County and the Kutztown University Visual Impairment Program. “It’s just a small snippet of what someone with vision loss goes through,” Lori Schermerhorn, president and CEO of the Vision Resource Center of Berks County, told WFMZ-TV.

Spectacular meteor showers are set to peak in the skies over Pennsylvania in the coming week, but some cloudy weather could get in the way. The Orionid meteor shower will hit its peak Friday morning. The best viewing will be early in the morning Friday and the days before. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights look to be mostly or partly cloudy, but things are forecasted to clear up by Thursday into Friday, which is the peak of the showers. The moon will disappear and leave mostly dark skies for the peak, when about 20 shooting stars an hour are predicted to fly. The meteors are fast-moving and occasionally produce bright fireballs and leave persistent trains. The hours between midnight and dawn are the best time to see the Orionids.
In other news, Michael Kane, a West Chester dad, is rounding up all of the best fall must-sees in Pennsylvania and all over the country! From attractions and professional events to incredible, homegrown Halloween displays, the new free app called FrightMaps features it all. Kane is a software engineer who first brought us the ChristmasPrism app in 2020, which allows you to discover the best holiday lights and displays in your area. Now, he’s back with the Halloween roundup, which maps out all of the tricks and treats. “It’s every major haunted attraction in America,” Kane says. “But it also allows every home haunt. Every Halloween enthusiast can upload their house as well so that everybody can find their 12-foot skeletons, blow-ups and other Halloween decorations.”

As Father Peter recently announced, Villanova is currently planning a process that will help guide decisions about the facilities for years to come. As part of this effort, students are invited to participate in a survey about the future of dining services at Villanova. According to the email from Student Life, student input will be instrumental in helping Dining Services in planning expanded dining options available. As an incentive for completing the survey, students will be eligible to participate in a prize drawing for a chance to win a tablet or a Food Points gift certificate. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and responses are due by October 30. Student’s identities will remain confidential and not be linked to responses.
In other news, Father Peter shared in an email to students how funding has been allocated for this fiscal year in support of Strategic Plan initiatives as well as highlighting some recent achievements. One of the key points was the St. Thomas of Villanova Center for the Common Good. This new Center was established as a consolidated University-wide office to centralize service experiences throughout the University. Kate Giancatarino, most recently the Director of the Center for Services and Social Justice, will serve as the inaugural Director of the center. Kate will collaborate with on- and off-campus partners to enhance community service programs, create learning engagement opportunities, and encourage reflection regarding the alignment of service and our Augustinian Catholic mission.

The Philadelphia Zoo will be illuminated with more than a million lights for the winter season. LumiNature will open at the zoo on Thursday, Nov. 17 and will have lights across 14 illuminated zones. Highlights will include a brand-new Penguin Prismatic show featuring a 40-foot-tall penguin, plus a new coral and under the sea holiday tree, along with other new additions. LumiNature is a nighttime experience, with timed entrance tickets available every half hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Last call is at 10 p.m. for those that arrived by 8 p.m. All guests must pre-purchase timed-tickets online. New this year, for a limited time only, purchase any-time tickets for just $33 for the ultimate flexibility. Prices vary by visit date.
In other news, a news report by Betway shows that Eagles fans are amongst the NFL’S best. Sports betting website, Betway, recently released results of a study it conducted to determine which teams have the best tailgates. With all factors considered, the Philadelphia Eagles tailgates were ranked No. 6 of all teams. To determine the teams with the greatest tailgating parties according to fans, the total number of social posts regarding tailgating per team and the positive online sentiment data was collected, utilizing Linkfluence, a social listening tool that tracks data across the internet from the past year. To find the greatest tailgating parties according to the data, a matrix was used and weighed at an equal factor across all NFL teams. Some of the factors considered were the number of hours the stadium parking is open before the game starts, parking ticket price, and more. After the algorithm was complete, the Eagles came in sixth place!

A 43-year-old Bryn Mawr man was charged with walking around one of the courtyards in the Commons without permission and then becoming combative with university public safety officials. Anthony DiMaio is free on $100,000 bail after being arraigned Saturday before District Judge Leon Hunter III on charges of aggravated and simple assault, public drunkenness and related charges. Villanova University director of public safety, David Tedjeske said, “Dimaio has been issued a no-trespass order and is banned from University property.” Tedjeske said not to engage with this man and asked anyone who sees DiMaio to contact the public safety office at 610-519-4444.
In other news, on October 13th, Reverend John P. Stack passed away peacefully at the age of 75. As per Father Peter’s announcement, Fr. Stack was an enduring presence at Villanova for more than 50 years. Under Fr. Stack’s leadership, there was a great expansion of campus life as Villanova transformed from a largely commuter campus to a residential experience. Additionally, Fr. Stack was instrumental in the formation of Villanova’s Parent and Family Engagement program, a cross-campus partnership involving the offices of University Advancement, Enrollment Management, the Career Center, Student Life and the Provost. Apart from his professional accomplishments, Fr. Stack was best known to generations of Villanovans as a priest first, but also as a teacher, an athlete, an advisor and friend. The viewing and funeral mass will take place on Friday, October 21 with the burial immediately following the Mass.

For the 12th annual World College Radio Day, WXVU was a proud participant! Starting Wednesday, October 5, at 12 PM, WXVU broadcasted 24-hours straight of live programming, featuring over 15 of our WXVU DJs!
WXVU played back the broadcast on Friday, October 7, the observed date worldwide of World College Radio Day.
The efforts of Chris Cokinos, WXVU Music Director and Route 30 Rock host, were most yeoman, as Chris took 5 different shifts totaling 7.5 hours spanning between 10:30 PM Wednesday and 12 Noon Thursday. Incredible!
WXVU gave away a grand prize of dinner for two at the Refectory during the broadcast, won by Kaitlin Urbanik. Thank you to all DJs who participated!

With the midterm election approaching this November, many students will need to complete new voter registration forms or update their previous forms. The deadline to register to vote is October 24 in Pennsylvania. Many students are choosing to register in Pennsylvania, rather than their home states, as Pennsylvania is a purple state. Students can learn how to register to vote in Pennsylvania through the organization, Let’s Vote Nova. Let’s Vote Nova is a nonpartisan organization that provides information to students about voting and voting registration in Pennsylvania. For more information about how to register, go to the Office of Student Involvement in Dougherty 102.
In other news, Campus Corner, Villanova’s local pizza shop, has gotten a makeover. The recent renovations of the local hot spot have just about wrapped up. Patrons can now see the new and updated layout, which features new flooring, additional seating, and plenty of Villanova merchandise. The new bar-style seating also allows for more customers. Another notable addition is the restaurant’s new liquor license. When talking to staff, it was noted that while alcohol will be for sale, there will be no drinking within the restaurant. Campco expects to implement its newly acquired licensing in a month or so.

Radnor Township has rescheduled the 10th annual Fall Harvest & Pumpkin Patch until Sunday, Oct. 9th. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Willows Park, at 490 Darby Road in Villanova. It will include pumpkin picking, tractor rides, balloon twisting, hay rides, an inflatable corn maze, and refreshments. The park will be closed to the public at 6 a.m. to prepare for the event. Parking will be available at the park’s entrance. Residents can pick up pumpkins from 1 to 3 p.m. Additionally, registration is still open for residents to receive a free large pumpkin by calling 610-688-5600 ext. 190.
In other news, renowned chef Jose Garces opened his first restaurant on the Main Line Tuesday morning. The restaurant crew carried a 5-foot long burrito on a wooden plank as a crowd gathered around a table outside of his new Mexican restaurant, Buena Onda, in Radnor Township. More than two dozen guests gathered around the table to welcome Garces. Garces is the 2009 winner of the James Beard Foundation’s prestigious “Best Chef Mid Atlantic” award. He also holds the title, “Iron Chef” and appears regularly on the food network’s hit, “Iron Chef America.” Garces signified the opening of his new restaurant, as he chopped the burrito in half at 228 North Radnor Chester Road. The restaurant features tacos, buena bowls, and burritos with chicken, shrimp and short ribs.

Each year, the St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service brings together about 5,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families to perform service throughout Greater Philadelphia. This annual event builds upon the service performed throughout the year by the Villanova community and serves to put its Augustinian ideals into action. St. Thomas of Villanova was known for his charity to the poor. Each year, the Villanova community celebrates its patron saint and his legacy of Caritas with Day of Service in his name. This year’s Day of Service will take place on Saturday, October 1st, with groups of students performing acts of service all around the Villanova and Philadelphia community.
Basketball season is around the corner, and there’s nothing like the annual Hoops Mania and Blue-White Scrimmage to help fuel that preseason hype. Hoops Mania will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, after the annual Villanova Day of Service. Tickets for Hoops Mania are distributed to current Villanova students through the lottery system. The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. This year’s annual pep rally for the men’s and women’s basketball teams will likely feature dance numbers, three-point shooting and dunk contests, plus an intrasquad scrimmage. The night is set to end with a surprise musical guest.

A beloved cheesesteak stand in the Reading Terminal Market is creating a new version of its sandwich in order to support victims of domestic violence. Spataro’s Cheesesteaks is a 75-year-old cheesesteak spot in Center City market. Now, it is adding something new to their menu to help raise money for victims of domestic violence. Available this Tuesday through Oct. 15, Spataro’s owner Alex Spataro will be offering his new Pink Cheesesteak, which will feature pink cheese wiz on the famous Philly sandwich. Using white American cheese and pink food coloring to create the bright pink hue, Spataro will be selling the pink steaks for about $15, with proceeds benefiting A Woman’s Place, the only domestic violence community benefit organization in Bucks County. Founded in 1976, A Woman’s Place provides a full range of programs, services and counseling to individuals experiencing domestic violence, their children, and the community.
In other news, St. David’s Church in Radnor, will hold its 171st Country Fair on Saturday, October 1st from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The Fair traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in October and distributes 100% of its proceeds amongst the Church’s 30+ local, regional, and international Outreach Partners to help benefit underserved families and communities. The St. David’s Country Fair remains the longest continuously running church fair in the United States, drawing visitors from across the region. The St. David’s Country Fair is open to the community and will feature attractions for all ages, including an Auction Tent, flea market finds, games, and food! Admission to the Fair can be paid at the entrance and is $2 per person or $10 per family. St. David’s Church is located at 763 South Valley Forge Road in Wayne, PA. Parking is free in the church lots and in the field adjacent to the Fairgrounds which can be accessed from Church Road. On Tuesday, September 27, WXVU's Nick Langan spoke with Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, the husband and wife combination that founded the group Minas. Minas will be performing at the Mullen Center at Villanova on September 28 as part of the ACS concert series. Orlando and Patricia discussed their beginnings into music, first meeting at UNC as undergraduate students in the 1970s, and the time they spent together subsequently living in Brazil. They discuss the group as it has sustained through four decades, including the influences of Antonio Carlos Jobim and the Bossa Nova sound. Orlando and Patricia also highlight the latest release of Minas, 'Beatles in Bossa Nova', and how much living in the Philadelphia area has meant to the each of them.

This weekend is Parent’s Weekend at Villanova, with many fun events happening on Campus! The Naval ROTC Fall Parade will take place at 3pm on Friday, followed by Family Weekend Campus Offerings at 4pm. Then, from 6-8pm the Inclusion Week Carnival and A Capella Showcase will take place. On Saturday, Father Peter will officiate the President’s Welcome at 9am. Next, from 12-2pm, the Multicutlural Student and Family Welcome Reception will take place. Following, there will be a Tailgate on the Green in anticipation for the Monmouth Hawks vs. Wildcats Football Game! On Tuesday, September 20, WXVU Music Director Chris Cokinos sat down with Kaleigh Brendle. Kaleigh is a Villanova sophomore, a singer and songwriter who has recorded 70 songs to date, and is also a disability rights activist. Kaleigh talked about how music and singing was such a part of her childhood, how one genre doesn't define her music, and what went into making her EP, Karma. Kaleigh also discussed about the challenges growing up she and her brother had due to a disability, and the inspiration her mother has provided for advocating for herself.

The Radnor Township Board of Commissioners have approved a single-use carryout bag ordinance, effective Thursday, Sept. 15. Retailers and residents have six months to comply with the new ordinance. Bags used to package bulk items like fruit and vegetables, newspaper and laundry bags are exempt under the ordinance. Several municipalities in the region have banned single use bags including Philadelphia, Easttown, and Haverford townships. Additionally, Narberth and West Chester boroughs have banned single use bags. Retailers may provide recyclable bags, however residents are encouraged to bring their own bags. Under the ordinance, retailers who violate this law would carry a $50 fine for the first offense; a $100 fine for the second offense, and $200 fine for the third offense.

Last week, Villanova told students to remain vigilant after police say this suspect is behind a number of crimes on campus. Now, he’s accused of taking photos of female students, and students say this new information is disturbing. Villanova is sending out a photo of 40-year-old Eugene Hammen to everyone on campus, as police say he’s the man who broke into a student’s room in Good Counsel Hall last October over the Fall semester break. Then, four months ago, police say Hammen struck again and was arrested for loitering outside Caughlin Hall. After a months-long investigation, the university is issuing a new safety warning after police say Hammen also took pictures of female students outside residence halls on South Campus. Victims who were involved were notified. During both incidents,Hammen was driving a 2014 dark blue Ford Transit van. Villanova does not believe he’s returned to campus recently but since he’s no longer in jail, his picture is being shared and students are being told to be on alert. Since the incident last Fall, security has been increased by adding more lighting, cameras and a license plate reader technology. Students are being told to remain vigilant after Hammen is accused of targeting the campus multiple times. Hammen has been issued a no trespass order and is told to stay off the campus. In other news, in addition with the BIG EAST Conference, Villanova announced the league portion of its 2022-23 Men’s Basketball schedule. The conference dates join the 11 previously announced non-league matchups to complete the Wildcats’ 22-23 schedule. The BIG EAST regular season starts for the Wildcats on Wednesday, Dec. 21 when Villanova hosts St. John’s at 6:30 p.m. at Finneran Pavilion. Then, the ‘Cats return to Finn on Dec. 31 to play Marquette at 2 p.m. The January home slate is highlighted by a Finneran Pavilion afternoon matchup with Georgetown on Monday, Jan. 16 and a Wells Fargo Center game with Providence on Sunday, Jan. 29. That marks the first of four BIG EAST games the ‘Cats will host at the Center in addition to the previously announced Dec. 3 BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle contest vs. Oklahoma. In February ,Villanova will play three straight games at home. The Wildcats meet DePaul and Butler at the Finn on Feb. 8 and Feb. 14 and then host Seton Hall at the Center on Saturday, Feb. 11. Creighton visits Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb. 25 at noon and Villanova will close out the regular season at Wells Fargo Center against Connecticut on Saturday, March 4 in a contest that will tip just after 7:30 p.m.

This Tuesday was the first day of school for students at the new Black Rock Middle School in Villanova. The new school is for Lower Merion School District students in grades five through eight from Penn Wynne and Gladwyne. Approximately 1,000 students will attend the new school. Fifth and sixth-graders reported on Tuesday, and seventh and eighth-graders reported on Wednesday. The start days are staggered to help everyone get used to the new building. Fifth-grader Bianca Slawter, an ambassador for the school, said, "It's pretty cool to see the school finally here in front of us." Students say the library and cafeteria are their favorite parts of the school. Resnick, another student, explained that the dining hall with new booths makes it seem like a restaurant. The grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Black Rock Middle School will take place next month.
Delaware County officials last week broke ground on a new, inclusive park in Upland. Delaware County Council Vice Chair Elaine Schaefer joined Director of Parks and Recreation Marc Manfre, Upland Mayor William Dennon, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, and various elected officials to break ground on the future site of a playground and field on Aug. 31 in Upland Park. The new playground will include features for children of all ages and abilities, with separate areas for younger and older children, and will include sensory activities for those with special needs. Playgrounds are shown to be important for the development of children in many ways, and offer emotional, social, mental, and physical benefits to children of all ages. They also help children work on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and coordination.

With the new school year back in progress, Villanova’s Campus Activities Team is hosting Quizzo this Thursday at 9PM at the Oreo. In addition, Food Truck Fridays are back starting at 9PM this Friday. In other news, the Villanova Outdoors Club is hosting numerous events this weekend. On Saturday there will be a trip to Cape Henlopen State Beach Park in Lewes, DE. The trip will leave at 7:30AM and return no later than 7PM. Additionally, there is a Twin Rivers Tubing trip in Easton, PA on Sunday. The trip will leave at 8:30AM and return no later than 4PM with a $20 fee. Finally, there is also a hike in Wissahickon, PA on Sunday which leaves at 9:30AM and will return no later than 5PM. The Fall for Ardmore Festival is happening on Schauffele Plaza, on Sept. 24 from 2 to 6 p.m.
Fall for Ardmore will include a full spread of food and drink from Downtown Ardmore restaurants, bars, cafes and eateries.
Ardmore retail and service businesses will feature special promotions, host events, and activities throughout the downtown, including face-painting, sidewalk sales, music and more, organizers said.
Live music and entertainment will include Whiskey Logic, a local rockin’ local cover band playing hits from the ’60s to the ’90’s, such as The Beatles, Talking Heads, Stone Temple Pilots and more.

There are only three municipalities in Montgomery County that do not have an earned income tax, Upper Merion, Lower Merion and Narberth. Some borough officials are hoping to take Narberth off that very short list, as officials have begun discussing a plan to add a 1% earned income tax.
In a letter to the council, Narberth borough manager Samantha Bryant said slightly more than 70% of the borough’s 2022 general fund revenue came from property taxes.
She argued that reliance on property tax causes an inequitable distribution of the tax burden.
According to information provided in the letter to the council, anyone with income under $12,000 or income that comes from Social Security, a pension or disability would not be assessed the EIT.
Besides who would pay the new tax, the other major question would be how much money it could generate for the borough. According to information Bryant requested from Berkheimer, the company that collects the tax in Montgomery County, a 1% EIT would generate $675,000 to $700,000 in 2023.

In other news, Chester County Realtor Ron Vogel said last week he is back in the race for the Republican nomination for the 6th Congressional District, after a 24-hour break. Vogel, of Chester Springs, said he suspended his campaign after publicity about old social media reports that were taken out of context. He explained the posts were a decade old and were parodies about Adolph Hitler, not meant to offend anyone. “I want the world to be a better place. If I run for Congress, I can bring people together,” Vogel said. Vogel is one of four candidates seeking the Republican nomination for 6th Congressional District, which covers all of Chester County and southeastern Berks County.

With the school year coming to a close, the Office of Residence Life would like to remind students of closing procedures and room assessments. Students must vacate their residence hall 24 hours following their last final exam or by noon on Saturday, May 7. Please note that students participating in Commencement or approved for Extended Stay Housing are exempt from this requirement. There are express check-out forms near the entrances of each room that students must fill out before leaving. Following this, Residence Life staff members will complete room assessments once all residents of a room have departed campus. Students do not need to register or be present for end-of-year room assessments. Damage charges may be assessed for rooms that do not meet move-out standards. Additionally, 24-hour quiet hours will remain in effect for the remainder of the semester.

In this podcast, Alex Hudson, a practicing emergency department nurse explores the topic of human trafficking with the goal to educate other emergency nurses on what human trafficking is, signs to look for to identify potential victims and what the nurse should do if human trafficking is suspected. In an ongoing 'Stop the Stigma' podcast series as part of the partnership with the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and WXVU, Senior Villanova nursing student Katelyn Wackrow hosts an episode consisting of interviews from students registered with ODS (Office of Disability Services), as well as experts who work with people with disabilities, with the goal of highlighting what it means to be a college student with a disability and ways society can work to combat the stigma of disability.
In an ongoing 'In The Know with Nova Nurses' series as part of the partnership with the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and WXVU, Senior Villanova nursing students Eve GaNun, Callie Decker, and Sophie Sanchez produced three PSAs and a music playlist about the benefits of activity, quick ways to get active, and how to get active on campus to help motivate listeners with free, accessible activities that can be done in their own environment.

This week in Villanova sports: Ukrainian tennis player, Valieriia Kornieva, shared her and her family’s struggles of the past few months as war continues in her home country. Softball went 4-0 with a win over UPenn and a three-game sweep of Georgetown. Baseball also had a successful weekend, with a 2-1 home series win over Butler. Both men’s and women’s track and field traveled to Florida for the Hurricane Invite where multiple athletes recorded season and personal bests. Women’s tennis picked up two big wins as they approach the conference tournament in two weeks, while men’s tennis fell to Marquette, 4-3, and looks to regain some momentum before postseason play. Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams were featured in this week’s issues following their successful seasons this year. Women’s Lacrosse fell to Marquette, 19-14, and have three games remaining before the conference post season. Rounding out the sports coverage, Villanova swimmer, Maggie Kleinsmith, wrote an article about UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas who transitioned last season and this year, started competing as a women, sparking debates surrounding transgender athletes and their eligibiltiy to compete.

This week on opinion: Pro and con perspectives on test optional admissions, written by Kai Da Luz and Audrey Ryan respectively. Abby Faeth discussed the role of greek life on campus, reflecting on her own personal experience with recruitment and the pros and cons of participating in a sorority/ fraternity. Lauryn Hayes wrote about the anxieties students face about internships prospects and how the Career Center can alleviate some of these stressors. Zoë Kim expressed the need for greater bolder legislation with respect to gun control following Sacramento’s mass shooting. Lindsay Gallagher called for dividing CLAS into separate schools for students pursuing a BA or BS, citing the numerous curriculum and advising mishaps that come with this being a combined school.

In Villanova news, the University hosted Admitted Students Day, and Caitlyn Foley talked to Title IX coordinator Ryan Rost about the University’s efforts for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Celia Deane-Drummond won the University’s Civitas Dei medal, awarded to “Catholics who have made exemplary contributions to the Catholic intellectual tradition and the pursuit of truth, beauty and goodness.” The Philly Justice Project hosted an event in support of India Spellman, a currently incarcerated person it believes to be wrongfully convicted. The University also hosted VU Pride Week, and the African-Caribbean Villanovans club hosted its first ever VCB Festival.

In the culture section this week: The Villanovan’s own Culture editor sat down with Mark Wahlberg to discuss his upcoming movie “Father Stu.” Brendan Coughlin talked to the Club Tennis team about their trek to Nationals in Orlando. Multiple on-campus events were covered like Chloe Miller’s article on Villanova’s annual Greek Week and Emma Cahill’s piece on Villanova’s Sustainability Committee’s Wildcat Thrift shop event where students could sell and buy clothes. Eric white attended and wrote on VTV’s production of The Villy’s, Villanova’s second annual student film showing. With the indoor masking mandate back in place in Philadelphia, a group of local residents and business owners have filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the mandate. According to Action News, the suit was filed in the Commonwealth Court and seeks to throw out the mandate based on CDC guidelines. The CDC's guidelines now focus more on hospitalizations rather than case counts when recommending masking and adding more protections against the coronavirus. The city last week announced it is reimposing indoor masking based on increasing cases of the coronavirus, moving the city into the "mask precautions" tier of its coronavirus response system. Restaurant owners have called the city's decision a major blow to the industry, which they claim is unfair, as they have worked hard to keep their workers and guests safe throughout the pandemic.
In other news, a random act of kindness happened to Doylestown couple, Jane and Kevin Sebesky, this past week. Last September, Kevin underwent multiple surgeries that led to a spinal infection, which ultimately left him paralyzed. Drowning in medical costs, their kids started a GoFundMe to raise money for a power wheelchair and transport van. One day, a woman rang their bell and gave the couple a bag of money for the wheelchair then immediately. They hope the kind stranger sees this as they want to thank her in person. The family says once they track down the good Samaritan, they hope to use the money towards a transport van, as Kevin already got his wheelchair. His goal this year is to be able to stand up for the national anthem at a Phillies game.

The American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting a presentation on Tuesday from 5pm-6pm via Zoom. Kayla Nelson is an engineer representing the Philadelphia ASCE region and will be presenting on some of the opportunities that the local chapter of the organization presents! Next week, on Monday April 25th, Elias Matar will be presenting with the Society of Civil Engineers from 5:30pm-6:30 pm. Elias is a structural engineer with decades of experience in a wide range of projects. Elias has led the structural design of a number of interior fit-outs at four World Trade Center and other locations in New York City, including the Hudson River Trading office, the MediaMath office, the Weber Shandwick office, Burger & Lobster Bryant Park and several retail and dining outfits at Westfield World Trade Center. The Radnor Township School District is going virtual again due to an increase in coronavirus cases amid district families and staffers. According to the district, Monday, April 18 will be a fully virtual instruction day to allow students and staff ample time to take a covid test before returning to school. The district is offering free drop-in testing the Monday after Easter for students and staff interested in being tested. The district had 34 positive cases reported by families and staff which is an increase from 11 positive cases the previous week and three cases the week before. The decision is also partially based on the potential of increased spread during spring break, the district said.
In other news, a piece of property that was once a stop along the Underground Railroad during America's slavery period will be preserved thanks to a forthcoming private donor gift. The long-anticipated news came years after previous controversial discussions about developing the tract of land into townhomes. The property has a long history. Its origins date back to 1734, and eventually became a station along the Underground Railroad, with the site operated by the Corson family, famous local abolitionists. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The township wanted to purchase the property, but it simply couldn't match offers that were being made by developers.

Villanova is looking for a graduating Communication senior to the Communications Associate Role. The Communication Associate, in close collaboration with University Communication and Marketing along with the University Advancement teams. This role provides support for integrated multi-channel communications for the University’s development and alumni activities. This individual serves as a project manager and writer for both digital and print communication and marketing initiatives within University Advancement, including the academic enterprise, the colleges, athletics and various administrative areas. An easy way to keep up with everything happening is via Facebook groups focused on specific places and interests. In other news, PennDOT and contractor crews are still working to fix potholes across the Philadelphia region this week, including more than a dozen roads in Delaware County.
Crews will restrict travel lanes on state highways to patch areas of deteriorating pavement. Drivers are advised to be alert of this moving operation and to expect intermittent lane closures and possible slowdowns when driving near work crews. All activities are weather dependent and some of the main roads being worked on include Interstate 476 near Ridley, Springfield, Nether Providence, Marple, Haverford, and Radnor townships. Drivers can report potholes and other poor road conditions by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD or visiting PennDOT's website and clicking on "Submit A Roadway Concern."

The Villys is a student film festival where students can submit their own films to be judged by a panel of faculty/alumni at Villanova. In other news, the Villanova Special Olympics will be helping give rides to the airport for Easter break! Vans will be leaving every half hour from 3 pm-7 pm on Tuesday, April 12, and every half hour from 9 am-5 pm on Wednesday, April 13. Vans will be leaving from behind The Pavilion and tickets are $10. Two basketball courts in Radnor Township parks will soon be getting facelifts. The Radnor Township Parks & Recreation is beginning its Basketball Court Improvement Project this Monday. However, the Monday start date is pending and will be revised as needed. The project will revamp courts in both Cowan and Odorisio parks. According to the township, the courts will be completely restored. Improvements include new surfacing, equipment, sideline seating, safety fencing, and court protection. During the project, the courts will be closed. Officials said the project is expected to last through June, but the work schedule is subject to change based on weather or other variables.
In other news, a potentially fatal avian virus that has impacted more than 20 eastern and midwestern states has now spread to Pennsylvania. The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was detected in a wild bald eagle in East Marlborough, Chester County. According to the state game commission, this marks the first Pennsylvania case of the virus since it was identified in North America in December. The virus can lead to sickness or death in turkeys, geese, hawks, and more. While the virus potentially can infect humans, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated the outbreak is primarily an animal health issue. No human cases have been detected or reported in the United States.

Due to the recent excitement of the Men’s Basketball team making it to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament, Dr. Wheeland, Provost of Academics, announced that Villanova will make some academic accommodations for those attending the next game in person in New Orleans. Students attending the game on Saturday, April 2, in person will be excused from classes on Friday, April 1, to allow for travel to New Orleans. Additionally, if Villanova makes it to the final championship game on Monday, April 4, students attending the game in person will also be excused from classes on April 4 and 5.
In other news, Villanova’s Relay for Life's annual color run will take place this Saturday, April 2nd from 10am-1pm around campus! Run a 5k with your friends while being covered in color! Police in Delaware County are joining more than 80 other police departments in the five county region to crack down on aggressive driving through late April to help reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities on area roadways as part of a statewide mobilization.
The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be cited.
Police will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrol strategies to identify and cite aggressive drivers.
The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania's Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT's investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket.
In other news, equipment from Spring Mill Fire Company in Whitemarsh Township, Pennsylvania is on its way to help firefighters in Ukraine. Chief Wayne Masters of Spring Mill Fire Company said that Volunteer fire companies want to give back to the community in any way possible, more than just locally. The department hasn't been able to donate for the last two years due to the pandemic so the company has more equipment than usual available to donate. The first delivery leaves this week and will take about two weeks to arrive in war-torn areas of Ukraine. These firefighters in Whitemarsh hope their donation will compel others to help too. Masters said that "Everybody believes the fire department is a brotherhood, whether in the same city, state, it just happens to be there in a different country. But the brotherhood still exists. So whatever we can do to help them out, we're happy to do it.

In other news, the Outdoor’s Club will be hosting various hiking trips this weekend! The first trip will take place on Saturday at the Delaware Water Gap in Colombia, NJ. This hike will be a A 5-mile loop with an elevation of 1000 ft. This trip will leave at 7:30 Saturday morning and return around 5pm. Another hike will be taking place on Saturday at the same time at Pulpit Rock in Hamburg, PA. This will be a moderately challenging hike with a small cave and beautiful overlooks. Finally, there will be a third hike at Valley Forge this Sunday. The trip will depart from campus around 9:30 and arrive back around 5 pm. This will be a slow hike through a national historical park and the site of George Washington's famed winter encampment.

Samuel won 1st place at the recently held 3-Minute Thesis competition amongst Villanova graduate students for his research on The Impact of Modeling Mental States on Goal Directed Conversations. Samuel will be representing Villanova in the Northeast Regional 3-Minute Thesis competition that will be held on April 28.
In this spirited conversation, Nick talks to Samuel about his Psychology background, his path to Villanova, how he settled on his research, and how we can adapt his findings to achieve meaningful conversations with others in our lives.

Newtown Square’s Historical Society will be hosting a “Taste of Ireland Tours" at the Square Tavern, Paper Mill House and Bartram Covered Bridge on March 19th starting at 12 noon. Visitors are invited to experience the warm and charming experience of the decorated 1700's Historic Square Tavern, while costumed guides explain Newton's history. Samplings of Irish cakes, breads, cheeses, ales and Meade will also be available as well as a new local art exhibit and sale. The Bartram Covered Bridge will also be open to walk across, as guests are able to step into the past and admire the unique architecture and trusses spanning the Crum Creek. The “Taste of Ireland Tours" is free of charge but donations are welcome!
In other news, Radnor Township's Board of Health shot down a plan to regulate kratom after a business selling the herbal extract along with CBD opened without township permission. The decision came out after residents decried the opening of the CBD Kratom store in the former Starbucks location, at 218 E. Lancaster Ave. in Wayne. Ultimately, the board decided the township should not regulate kratom. However, because the Board of Health is only an advisory group, Radnor Commissioners will make a final decision on kratom regulation soon.

As per Father Peter’s recent email, the University's Board of Trustees approved the Fiscal Year 2023 budget, which includes a tuition increase of 4.25 percent. According to Father Peter, the tuition increase is a reflection of inflation present in the U.S. economy. The budget also allows for the University’s commitment to undergraduate financial assistance. Finally, the budget provides for continued investment in the Strategic Plan and programmatic initiatives. Villanova currently provides more than $140 million in undergraduate financial assistance, which is an increase of $57 million over the past 10 years.
In other news, a traffic light at East Lancaster and North Ithan avenue fell into the road on Monday afternoon. According to Radnor Township police the traffic light fell due to high winds. Though police had blocked off traffic in the westbound lanes on Lancaster Avenue, traffic has now returned to normal flow.

"Harry Potter star Rupert Grint recently enjoyed a meal on the main line. Grint, or better known as Ron Weasley from "Harry Potter,", was out to eat at Minella's Diner in Wayne. On Sunday, Minella's shared a photo of the 33-year-old English actor on their Facebook page. Grint is back in the Philadelphia area to film the fourth season of Apple TV's "Servant." Filming locations for the psychological horror series have included Center City Philadelphia and Delaware County, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
In other news, police in Radnor reported an incidence of checks being fraudulently cashed after being stolen from a mailbox. According to police, the incident occurred on Jan. 21 as the victim put mail containing checks in the mailbox outside the Wayne Post Office at 104. S. Wayne Ave. Police said the victim quickly realized the payees did not get the funds from the checks, as the checks were cashed at various locations and had their amounts altered. The Radnor police have said to hand your outgoing mail to your postal carrier or take mail to the post office directly for delivery. The police also mentioned not to leave mail inside the mailbox overnight and advised patrons to pay bills online if possible. If you are expecting and did not receive a check, or other valuable property, contact the issuing agency immediately for verification.
