In today's podcast, I cover how to complete Department Planning, which is Step 6 of the Talent Planning Process.

In this episode, I share a high-level overview of the Talent Planning Process for you to use for your 2022 strategy and talent planning process.
When you proactively work upstream through Talent Planning, you're going to solve your people issues before they impact your business, which accelerates your company's growth.
Show notes:
Who owns the talent in your organization? Who is the person responsible for making sure you have the right talent in the right seats to execute your strategy and achieve your vision?
Is it Human Resources?
Operations?
Company Leader?
Leadership Team?
The answer to that question is essential for growing companies. If no one in your organization officially owns talent, how will you solve your people (talent) issues limiting your growth?
This is a core reason why companies do not achieve the revenue they could. They're unable to get ahead of their people issues resulting in an overwhelming cost of talent because no one owns the responsibility.
In this episode, I cover:
As leaders, we are facing the greatest employee shortage in history.
At the end of June 2021, there were a record 10+ million positions open.
In today’s podcast, I discuss how talent planning can solve any employee shortages you are experiencing in your company.
This podcast will help you optimize each team member's performance and your organization's overall performance moving forward (post-pandemic).

Three words no one wants to hear:
You have cancer.
I heard those three words on October 15th, 2020. Since then, I've battled cancer and found out two weeks ago that I'm 100% cancer-free.
On today's podcast, I share my battle with cancer and relate it to the fact that many people have faced a significant emotional event through the pandemic that has changed them, as cancer did for me.
As leaders, we must address those changes proactively to maximize post-pandemic performance and ensure our team has the greatest job and life satisfaction.
My question for you is: How has the pandemic and any other significant emotional event impacted you? Are you aware of the changes it may have created? What about your team members?
Take time to become aware of the changes you've had and your team and create a plan to address those changes.
Today's episode is going to be different.

There's an adage that it can be lonely at the top. But I believe that leaders can be lonely at every stage—whether you're the CEO or a manager of two.
And this pandemic has only increased that feeling of loneliness.
Spending eight to nine hours a day in the same room and at the same desk takes a toll on your mental and social health.
So how do you combat the feeling of loneliness as a leader?
Some leaders try to suppress their feelings of loneliness or even numb them through unhealthy habits. In the end, most methods of “dealing with it by ignoring it” are not helpful.
That's why it's essential to know how to combat loneliness when it emerges.
In today's podcast, I interview Damian LaCroix - current Superintendent of Howard Suamico School District and 2017 Wisconsin Superintendent of the Year about the five prescriptions for combatting leadership loneliness.
SHOW NOTES:
2020 has been quite a year... While our team is looking forward to turning the page on this challenging year, we have something special to celebrate first:
Stop The Vanilla celebrated its 20th anniversary this year! 🎉
And in honor of 20 years in business, in this week's podcast, I share the top 20 things I've learned over 20 years in business.
Full list below:
1) To lead others, you first need to lead self.
2) Working out is part of the workday.
3) Telling your story is the first step to a healthy relationship.
4) Everyone in your company needs to understand "why" a customer will choose your company vs. your competition.
5) Strategy is an evolution, not a revolution.
6) Understand, own, and leverage your natural behavioral style.
7) Understanding how to read the behavioral style of the person you are communicating with to adapt to their style is a game-changer in life.
8) Prioritize the passions in your life.
9) Everyone has a Mint Chocolate Chip Strategy.
10) Interviewing without behavioral science is like driving at night without the car lights on.
11) Total person development is the future of talent development.
12) Everyone has issues, and if they tell you they don't, that is their first issue.
13) Accountability partnerships are critical.
14) Feed the Force of each team member.
15) Everyone has a responsibility to be the shepherd of the talent – at work and home.
16) Understanding emotional intelligence is a game-changer for every leader.
17) Talent planning is the future.
18) How to build high-performance teams.
19) Clarity is the single most important word in every person's life.
20) You can achieve anything in your business and your career and life with the right strategy and right talent.
Millions of dollars are invested each year into development programs to enhance organizational performance. Some of these programs cover emotional intelligence, public speaking, or soft skills.
But I rarely hear organizations investing in one crucial area that can significantly boost team performance: Career and life planning.
And in today's podcast, I cover why you need to and how to implement career and life planning into your talent planning system.
This week I have Terry Albrecht on the podcast to discuss how high-growth companies win the battle for talent.
Terry has built an employer of choice culture at Packer Fastener that boasts a 98% retention rate with around 95% of new hires coming from team member referrals.
In today's podcast, we share the next steps to proactively resolve your people issues.

Show notes:
Do you have someone that can help you think through your career and life decisions? A person who's been there and done that?
I know that if I had that resource when I was figuring out my career path I would've had a shorter and less bumpy road.
That is why in today’s podcast we are going to cover:
Show notes:
The Stop the Vanilla in Your Career Process began as a family recipe.
I used the process to help each of my four children find a career they will love and are fit for.
This week it became a public recipe with the release of the book.
And we are already receiving stories of how the book and process are changing lives. In this week's podcast, I speak about three of those stories.
Show notes/downloads:
In 2017, I took an idea to my Board of Advisors. The idea was not well received and consider a distraction to our strategy of targeting business leaders.
That idea to write my second book, Stop the Vanilla in Your Career and Life. Which helps individuals create a career and life plan to love what they do and live the life they want.
At the time, I was unclear on how this would also help business leaders. But after seeing the process implemented into organizations, I now see how it can be used to build high-performance teams.
And in this week's podcast, I cover how you can build high-performance teams using the Stop the Vanilla in Your Career and Life Process.
Show notes:
Like me, Matt was a part of the 87.7% of the working population that does not describe themselves as passionate about what they do for a living.
But after going through the Stop the Vanilla in Your Career and Life process, that changed. Matt is now part of that coveted 12.3% of the population that describe themselves as passionate about what they do.
And I am confident his story will inspire hundreds if not thousands of people to pursue a career to love what they do for a living.
Because no matter where you are in your journey, you can use the Stop The Vanilla in your Career and Life process to find a career you will love.
In today's podcast, I discuss with Matt:
Use Matt's story as the spark to start your journey to loving what you do and live the life you want.
SHOW NOTES
No one is self-made.
Every successful person has an amazing person or team behind them that helped them achieve the great things they've achieved.
And that is what we are going to talk about in this week’s episode: Why having an accountability partner is crucial to achieving the vision for your career and life and the steps to getting one.
In this episode we cover:

How do you want to be remembered?

Show notes:
How did you decide on your current career path?
Was it the career someone close to you had? Or was it the career that provided you the most financial upside?
Maybe like me, you had no clue as to what the right career path was when you graduated. And college or the career you found yourself in seemed like the easiest next step.
But did it provide you with a career you’re passionate about and deliver naturally?
For 87.3% of the workforce, it didn’t. (2014 Deloitte Passion at Work Report)
And on this week's podcast, we discuss:
Show Notes:
Whether you want to motivate your team around your vision or sell your product or service, storytelling will improve your outcome.
But rarely do people go in-depth on HOW to tell great stories. It's not enough to know why, but you need to know what stories to tell and how to tell them.
Paul Smith is one of the rare people who has dedicated his career to showing leaders HOW to tell great stories. He's written several books on storytelling, including, The 10 Stories Great Leaders Tell, How To Sell with a Story, and How to Lead With a Story.
On this week's podcast, he shares how leaders can improve their business by telling better stories. He lays out 5 of the 10 stories great leaders tell and how you can start telling them.
"Why is clarity important?"
This was a question asked by a leader in a recent leadership development process. She lacked clarity in a few areas of her life and did not understand the implications that had on her performance and life.
In today's podcast, we cover:

We discuss the steps on how you can answer that question in today's episode.

In part one of a three-part series, Mark Zelinski, a strategy and talent advisor at Stop The Vanilla, joins to discuss how this pandemic has changed strategic planning.
They discuss the future of strategic planning and have three key takeaways that you can apply to your business to achieve your goals.

It's someone who is continuously on the lookout for the talent they need in their organization or department.
In this week's episode, we cover the 3 steps to becoming a talent hawk.
And how doing so will help you build the team to achieve your dream.

This week's podcast covers how you can dominate your industry by working "ON" your business, not just "IN" your business.
The most profitable organizations become experts at working "ON" their business. They do this through department planning.
It's how you get more involvement from your team and ensure everyone is working towards achieving your vision.
What is the most forgotten step of the hiring process? The ramp-up.
The first-year development plan for a new hire is one of the steps most organizations fail to execute.
When you implement this step in your hiring process, you will accelerate the success of your new hire and your organization.
This week's podcast covers how to accelerate the performance of your HR and organizational development (OD) department to enhance the ROI of your largest investment, talent.
We will walk you through the steps on how you can get OD ASAP.
This week's podcast covers one of the hottest techniques in talent management:
Customized Interviewing.
In today's episode, I provide you the practical steps to implement customized interviewing into your organization.
One of the greatest inefficiencies most organizations face is low role clarity. The Key Accountability process will provide role clarity to your entire organization.
80% of employee turnover is due to a bad hire. That makes your hiring process essential to the success of your organization.
Today's podcast will help you improve your hiring process and make it more accurate, reliable, and able to trust to make the right hire the first time.
The 2 primary ingredients for success in your business is strategy and talent. Without strategy, your talent is not focused. Without talent, your strategy is not executed.
For most organizations that I talk to, their biggest challenge is talent.
Whether it's having enough talent or the right people in the right positions.
In this week's podcast, we're going to go over how to create a talent plan for your business that will turn your number one challenge of talent into a competitive advantage.
In this week's episode I cover a game changing process to create a vision for your life and a 1 page plan to achieve it.

I’ve led over 1,000 Strategy & Talent Planning Sessions across hundreds of industries as well as provided coaching to thousands of leaders. I wanted to create this podcast to bring you proven strategies, processes and methodologies I’ve seen work with clients over the 20+ years I’ve been doing strategy and talent consulting.
In 2012, I published my award-winning book Stop Selling Vanilla Ice Cream and will publish my second book Stop Living Vanilla Ice Cream in 2019. I am motivated to help leaders, teams and organizations stop the vanilla in their business and life to achieve what they want.
