In this episode, Erika Jobes, Dr. Joseph Howell and guest, Jessica Yarbrough, discuss the Enneagram and the dangers of typing others. The Enneagram teaches that there are nine different personality styles in the world, one of which we naturally gravitate toward and adopt in childhood to cope and feel safe. Each type or number has a distinct way of seeing the world and has an underlying motivation that powerfully influences how that type thinks, feels and behaves. When we assign others a type based on their behavior, we are often wrong and can misunderstand the way they move in the world.
In this episode, we learn that we can find hope and trust in the present moment as we allow our healthy energies to re-frame our pain body. Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes break down the abstract concept of the pain body in a way that is easy to understand and relate to.
Eckhart Tolle's description of the pain-body, which is the dark shadow cast by the ego, is actually afraid of the light and of consciousness. It is afraid of being found out. Its survival depends on your unconscious identification with it, as well as on your unconscious fear of facing the pain that lives in you. But if you don’t face it, if you don’t bring the light of your consciousness into the pain, you will be forced to relive it again and again. The pain-body may seem like a dangerous monster that you cannot bear to look at, but it is actually an insubstantial phantom that cannot prevail against the power of your presence.
In this episode, Erika Jobes and Dr. Joseph Howell discuss their personal experience with resilience as it relates to the Enneagram. Each personality has its own unique defense mechanism. Each of us believes that our strategy for survival is the right one. These strategies feel right. Sometimes, though, they lead us and others astray. The Enneagram provides a framework to guide and support a personal shift away from the survival strategy to an understanding of the other positions and more conscious behavior. It is useful to be in a community (or team) where constructive feedback can be provided to help us better manage our defense mechanisms.
Join Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes as they engage in a rich discussion with Maggie Banger, a student in the ICB Scholar's program who identifies as an Ego Type One. Maggie speaks to embracing her Holy Idea of Holy Perfection from a place of "wholeness, not perfection." Her journey has enabled her to practice self-compassion which, in turn, has allowed her to become more compassionate toward others. The Enneagram has taught her to change her language and overall attitude toward her husband and children and to allow them to have their own journey rather than a journey that she controls. You won't want to miss this episode if you identify as an Ego Type One or if you have Ego Type Ones in your life!
Join Dr. Howell and Erika Jobes today as they welcome Amy and Harold Head into their discussion. Neither Amy as an Ego Type Four or Harold as an Ego Type Seven begin their Enneagram journey in the Body Center and they discuss in depth how they take conscious and deliberate steps to get in touch with their bodies. Dr. Howell gives an overview of the ways the different Types in the Body Center (9, 8, and 1) deal with their rage and anger. Amy talks about how her Holy Ideas and Virtues help her to integrate to her Essence at the One. Harold gives a great description of the spiral dynamics of the Enneagram and the way we don't simply stop at our Essence. We continue around the Enneagram, picking up the wisdom and knowledge of each number.
In this episode Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes have an in depth discussion about the Holy Ideas of the Enneagram, including a brief history of Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, two of the founding fathers of the Enneagram of Personality. Dr. Howell explains that the Holy Ideas are not reducible. They are pure and whole and when we live out of Essence, we exhibit these Ideas and regain our connection to the Divine. Dr. Howell, as an Ego Type Six, provides personal examples of how his Holy Ideas of Holy Strength and Holy Faith act as a bridge to Essence.
Join us today as Dr. Joseph Howell, Erika Jobes and guest, Reverend John Adams answer some listener questions and discuss the Enneagram of Holy Ideas. John is on the faculty of the Institute of Conscious Being and has studied the Enneagram for many years. Dr. Howell explains that our Essence is the antidote to our Ego suffering and that the goal of this Enneagram journey is not to become the best Ego we can be. Reverend Adams, as an Ego Type Two, reveals how his Holy Ideas of Holy Will, Holy Freedom and Holy Grace act as a bridge between Ego and Essence. When we began to put on the veil of Ego as children, we lost our connection to our Holy Idea. As we begin to gain awareness and become more conscious, we reconnect with our Holy Ideas and remember our connection with the Divine.
Today Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes are joined by Roger Conville who is on the faculty of the Institute for Conscious Being. Roger has been studying the Enneagram for 25 years and today he discusses how he, as an ego Type Seven, finds his soul child at the Healthy Five. When Roger is living in Essence, he becomes more grounded and observant and experiences the Divine through nature and stillness.
In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes are joined by guest Jessica Yarbrough who identifies as an Ego Type 2. She is a student in the Scholar's program through the Institute for Conscious Being. Dr. Howell discusses how we shift from ego to essence by re-embodying our soul child. The conversation centers around what it looks like to live out of soul rather than ego. Jessica shares about feeling frantic when she's living out of ego as well as the peace that comes when she reconnects with her essence.
In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell is joined by Sai and Nanette Mudiam who discuss how the Enneagram and the concept of the soul child has impacted their relationship to each other, to the other members of their family, and to their community. Through their understanding of the Enneagram’s inner flow, and its pathways of spiritual growth toward essence, they are having conscious interactions which brings peace. The process is achieved through spiritual work and practice revealing joy, grace, and wholeness in their own lives and in the lives of others.
In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Sai Mudiam discuss how the soul child is a direct experience of the non-egoic self that lies beneath our personality type. Sai discusses his discovery of the Enneagram, and how the aspects of the soul child reveal a way back … a return to the way we are truly made and who we truly are; a re-connection to our essence. The soul child is the gateway, a way to experience the deeper truth within; allowing a glimpse of what brings peace and wholeness into our lives as we grow in consciousness.
In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Barbara Sloan discuss how the soul child is important to the teachings of the Enneagram and explore the processes of rediscovering and re-inhabiting her own soul child. By exploring how we have the capacity to experience our soul child’s innocence, awe, and wonder as more of our soul qualities are revealed in each present moment, we can experience peace and wholeness again.
In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Dr. Drexel Rayford discuss the qualities of the soul child as Dr. Rayford shares his personal experiences of moving beyond the Typology of the Enneagram into its deeper spiritual wisdom. Returning to our essence, the soul of our being, our soul child helps us to rediscover our own forgotten truths. It is the gateway to our soul where our deepest self, our true nature, our soul qualities, and our bliss is revealed.
Is your Ego Type in the process of integration or disintegration? Join Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes in this in-depth discussion of the inner flow of the Enneagram. When viewing the nine numbers on the Enneagram circle, each number has two arrows; an arrow that points toward it and an arrow that points away from it. The inner flow of the Enneagram is a description of the flow toward disintegration and the flow toward integration of your Ego Type. Dr. Howell provides listeners with a foundational overview of how to use their own Ego Type number and trace its flow going with the arrow to the Ego Type where it disintegrates to the unhealthiest and unconscious aspects of that number as it follows the path of least resistance. Continuing his description, by following the inner flow and going against the arrow, he traces the Ego Type’s integration to healthiest and conscious aspects of that number—which is the antidote to suffering and where their essence and soul child can be found. Providing listeners a unique opportunity to hear about their own Ego Type’s inner flow, each of the nine energies are traced and identified in both their paths of integration and disintegration. The descriptions of what each Ego Type looks like in both integration and disintegration provides a fascinating view into how the Enneagram’s inner flow maps our pathway toward either a continuous spiral up in consciousness, offering healing and wholeness, or a spiral down into more needless suffering. Are you embracing the healthy and conscious aspects of your essence number as they are revealed in your life?
How do the wings of your Ego Type help you move in the world? In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes discuss the auxiliary wings of the nine Ego Types. The wings, which are also aspects of our Ego Type, are the numbers located on either side of our Ego Type. As an example, the Ego Type Four has a Three wing and a Five wing. Wings provide nuances and leanings to our Ego Type, and are auxiliary ways of moving in the world. Our Ego Type’s wings have the ability to integrate or disintegrate, and can be dominant or latent. If a wing has not been apparent in the first part of life, it becomes apparent in the second part of life when people are looking for alternative strategies for ways to move in the world after the critical mass of suffering has been reached in the Ego Type level. Wings are aspects of our Ego Type that can be awakened through awareness and through spiritual practice. As you grow in consciousness and awareness, how will your wings affect the movement of your own Ego Type?
Why are Levels of Consciousness important to the Enneagram? Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes introduce listeners to the three Levels of Consciousness in this episode and explore further the aspects of why the Enneagram is not a “static, labeling, typing, personality system.” Its spiritual wisdom offers an organic reflection of the changeability of life. Understanding the Levels of Consciousness reveals that the Enneagram reflects the complicated nature of life, it does not standardize it, and goes much deeper than just the labeling of a Type. Exploring how each Ego Type’s fixation develops to protect the vulnerable soul child from becoming wounded again, we learn that the ego comes to the unconditioned soul child to protect it, give it a way to react to the world, to move in the world, and provides an image. Out of the ego’s defense mechanisms—designed to protect the soul child—comes the irrational ideas, distortions of reality, and the ways that we move in the world that are on three different levels: Healthy/Conscious, Average, and Unhealthy/Unconscious. Taking listeners through the different movements in the three Levels of Consciousness for the Ego Type One, Dr. Howell provides real life examples and explains that we can be on any one or all three levels at any given time according to our level of stress, our level of spiritual growth, and the level of our conscious understanding. Providing a reference point, the Levels of Consciousness help us to be aware of, and observe, the voice of the ego and understand how to move from the Unhealthy/Unconscious level to the Healthy/Conscious level in each of the nine Ego Types. As you identify where you are in your Ego Type’s Levels of Consciousness, are you moving more toward egocentricity or soulcentricity today?
Are you interested in learning how to shift to higher consciousness? Join Dr. Joseph Howell, Erika Jobes, and special guest Denise Smith as they discuss how finding our soul child can help us rediscover the bliss we had as a child. Through the Enneagram’s sacred wisdom, its real purpose of enabling the inquirer to go to their true nature, away from the fixations of the ego and endless superficial mind chatter, is revealed. By following the inner flow of the Enneagram, and moving away from the inquirer’s ego point to their point of integration, essence and their soul child is found. Accessible to everyone, the soul child is a concrete example of what our soul was like as it expressed the qualities of pure soul. When we return to our essence, we have unity with others, lose the dualism of me verses you, and we realize that we are all connected just like we were as a child. We realize the ego does not separate us when we shift from our ego to our soul. As Denise Smith identifies as an Ego Type One, she describes her own soul child experience as she journeyed against her arrow to her integration point of the healthy Seven. Freed from her own inner critic, and finding pure joy in essence, she reveals how this has helped her to end the suffering of the endless superficial mind chatter that accompanies the inner critic of the Ego Type One. Understanding the shift to higher consciousness is helping to alleviate so much of her own suffering. As the very first Enneagram teachers revealed, once we begin to learn about how to reclaim the soul child, we find the Essential Aspect of the Divine that we were born with and expressed without an ego covering. This shift to essence, to the point of integration, is the shift in consciousness that is a higher consciousness than the ego. It is a shift to our soul!
In the study of the Enneagram, how is the soul child a gateway to the soul? In the first of several episodes about the soul child, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes are joined by special guest Nanette Mudiam, Director of St. Michael’s Clinic, to discuss the journey to essence and the soul child. Spiritual teachers and authors A.H. Almaas, Sandra Maitri, Joseph Howell, and others have written and lectured extensively on the soul child. But in many Enneagram Schools, the aspect of the soul child isn’t taught as it can be difficult to explain. The Institute for Conscious Being teaches the concept of the soul child experientially; as it is a real, living entity that is within each of us. Hidden and repressed, our soul child is the way we were when we first came to earth, and expresses pure unconditioned soul. In a moving description, Dr. Howell takes listeners through how we catch glimpses of expressed soul child qualities. As Nanette Mudiam identifies as an Ego Type Nine, she discusses her own experiential exercise of going against her arrow and finding her own soul child energy at the healthy Three. And, the reward of finding joy, strength, and liberation in her own life. As she lives out of her essence, Nanette discusses the impact that is has had on her work with the underprivileged clients that she serves as the director of a nonprofit medical clinic. Moving beyond the Enneagram’s Typology, we can find relief for the suffering that we have created for ourselves. As we journey toward essence and find our soul child, we change the lens from which we view our world, and we can feel our soul child’s unconditional love, joy, and peace again. Has your soul child expressed itself in your life today? The answers are within us and start with the soul child!
How does the Enneagram’s sacred wisdom help us to journey to our essence? In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes discuss how, when we live our lives in ego, our mind, body, and emotions can become disconnected from our primary identity which is our soul or essence. Essence is how we came into the world before we put on our ego’s protective covering. “It is our essential part of our core, the true us, and it has to do with our meaning in life, our sacred purpose, and how we move in the world to accomplish that.” Our soul child is our personal essence that was embodied by us as children. As revealed in the beliefs of Abrahamic religions, our soul is damaged and is recovering from the fall, or disconnection, from the Divine from which it came. The soul’s journey is to recover the complete oneness with the Divine. As we achieve increased awareness and consciousness, this is happening. Once we journey to essence, and we continue to follow the inner flow of the Enneagram, we are no longer an Ego Type number. Listen in as Dr. Howell explains how the new name is Reconnected. By following the Enneagram’s inner flow, the nine Ego Types have a journey that reconnects them to their essence. The inner flow of the Enneagram is the forgotten pathway to wholeness! Where are you in the Enneagram’s inner flow on your journey to essence?
Do you instinctively make decisions based on a “gut feeling” of the right way to go? Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes explore the Body Center of Intelligence in this episode and reveal ways that Ego Types Nine, Eight, and One approach and understand the world. The three Ego Types of the Body Center are focused on instinctual, visceral ways about what to do, and when and how to move in the world. There is a “gut feeling” within the body that is the Center of Intelligence for Ego Types Nine, Eight, and One. These three Ego Types experience anger and rage as they sense there is limitation by even being in a body. That limitation causes anger; an anger that one has to be limited and their sphere of influence is not as great as they want it to be. This episode delves deep into how each of the three Types have developed egoic ways to circumvent their limitations. Exploring how the Nine, Eight, and One came into the world as essence, and how each Type set up an ego reaction to the world, reveals how returning to their essence becomes the antidote to their suffering that living in the ego alone brings. As you grow in awareness, are you discerning and listening to the messages the Centers of Intelligence are sending you?
Are your choices in life made based on your feelings? Does your heart lead the way? In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes explore how the Heart Center of Intelligence interprets the world through emotions. Comprised of Ego Types Three, Two, and Four, feelings are predominately used to make decisions and categorize things in order of importance. The three Ego Types in the Heart Center are very concerned with being loved, feeling supported, and feeling cared about. They are also very vulnerable to feelings of shame, as they do not feel loveable. This episode reveals how the egos of these three Types perceive the world through lens that are distortions of reality. The Enneagram’s wisdom reveals that all of the nine personalities are built on some premises that are delusions. Tune in to hear the delusional premises for the three Ego Types in the Heart Center. Once you remove the ego’s story, we are not our successes, our usefulness, or our created works. We have an essence that is much deeper that is untouched that is not distorted; it is pure and true. The Enneagram helps people to know what ego structure they have, so when it breaks down, it points to where that ego can go to find restoration. This spiritual quest is a journey back to wholeness!
What is the Mind Center of Intelligence? Join Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes in this episode to learn more about the Enneagram’s Mind Center of Intelligence, which is comprised of Ego Types Six, Seven, and Five. Located in the brain, the Mind Center is the analytical and perceptual understanding of the world through our thoughts and thinking. We are not born our Ego Type; we are born into another way of being. Our Ego Type—or personality type—is a reaction to having lost that way of being. For each of the Ego Types in the Mind Center, fear is their principal enemy. Fear came into their lives as very small children, when they were told they could no longer be the way they came to earth. In trying to deal with this fear, their minds thought of ways, mental constructs, so they would not have to experience fear anymore. The coping mechanisms of the Ego Types in the Mind Center are based on thought and how they use their brains to deal with fear. The ego tries to replicate what they felt in essence—which is only a facsimile—as there is truly no way to ever be completely secure in today’s world. The pathways of the Enneagram reveal how to get back to our essence in a non-facsimile way. What a wonderful way its wisdom reveals the answers on how to deal with our suffering!
Are you new to the Enneagram or a seasoned learner? Having an understanding of the basics and fundamentals of the Enneagram is important to both new and life-long students of its sacred wisdom. In this episode, Dr. Joseph Howell and Erika Jobes provide a brief overview and introduction of the three Centers of Intelligence: the Body Center, Heart Center, and Mind Center. As we grow in consciousness and the understanding of the Enneagram, we grow in the awareness of, and being able to discern and listen to, the messages these three Centers of Intelligence transmit to us. This episode reveals how each Center perceives the world differently through nine different portals of understanding, and how each Center deciphers their environment and the information that it receives. Exploring how we are born to have an Ego Type in one of these Centers helps us to understand what the purpose of our ego is trying to do, how it is trying to interpret the world, and how we are related to the other two Centers. “It is through going from one Center to another that we are able to pick up all three Centers of Intelligence to be a balanced human being and to be consciously aware of how we are going.” Listen in to a unique perspective as Dr. Howell describes his first introduction to the Centers of Intelligence as cities while studying with Patrick O’Leary and Maria Beesing, co-authors of the first Enneagram textbook. Which Center of Intelligence “city” will your own Ego Type reside in?
In this premier episode, Dr. Joseph Howell, Founder of the Institute for Conscious Being, and faculty member Erika Jobes, discuss how the Enneagram is much deeper than just a personality typing system; it is a map of spiritual development that leads to consciousness and the soul. Typology is needed as the first step to reveal the Ego Type, but the sacred wisdom of the ancient Enneagram reveals a spiral of spiritual growth which leads to transformation. The Enneagram points us to our soul which is the essence of our being. Life-giving and lifesaving, our soul qualities are revealed through the Enneagram’s sacred wisdom as we move away from egoic unconsciousness into the depths of soul consciousness and enlightenment. Are you interested in exploring the Enneagram’s true purpose and learning ways that reveal your Divine inner quality? Plan now to join The Real Enneagram: A Spiritual Quest as each new podcast reveals ways to learn more about your own specific purpose in life and how to grow deeper in essence.
