Every episode, hosts Jeremy Toeman (@jtoeman, representing #genx) and JT White (@thebsideoflife our #millennial) take on a unique #LoFi Top 5 list, with an assemblage of nostalgia and some surprising insights into filmmaking and storytelling. Their ever-evolving format includes "the Shawshank" (the undebatable category definer), a guess-that-movie-by-a-five-word-description game, and a few rounds of "contender pong" for all the entries that didn't make the Top Five final list. It's been a while as the boys have been doing some summer traveling, and, as tends to happen, that spawned an idea for an episode. You've got a long flight ahead of you, the plane's wifi is garbage so no work to be done, but you've got your trusty iPad and the in-flight entertainment; what's your go to movie? This week, Gen-X Jer and Millenial JT go deep into what it takes to be a good plane movie. Rules are broken, discussions had, lists made, but most importantly the boys of summer are BACK!
This week the boys are hopping through time to pull out the best of the best in time travel films. Whether looking back to the future, or thinking about days of future past, this week is filled with wormholes and timelines and phonebooths? Whether it's Pops, Padre, Daddio or Dad (but not Father, ammirite!) last weekend was the time to celebrate all things Dad. So much so that the LoFi boys were out in the world being celebrated. But worry not, while gone they were thinking of all the Cinema-Dads out there and trying to comb through which would be the best. From ballroom dancing to deep-sea swimming, all these movie Dads have a particular set of skills that are sure to leave you feeling the love. So throw on your cargo shorts, lace up those New balances and grab a cold one for the Dad's in movie episode!

The impact the LGBTQ+ community has had on the arts is nothing short of astounding, so the LoFi guys are talking about the Top 5 movies that highlight members of or concepts from that community on this week's episode. From Happy to Heartbreaking, Jeremy and JT discuss the learnings and lessons taken from these films and just how important representation truly is. Happy Pride everyone!

In this universe or any other, there was just no way that the boys couldn't do an episode on Dr. Strange - The Multiverse of Madness. Not being one for reviews, the LoFi guys instead created 5 favorite and least favorite moments from the newest film in Phase 4 from Marvel. Needless to say, this episode contains spoilers from the very beginning, so go see the movie before listening folks! Is it a great entry, just a decent one, or was it a miss entirely. This week, the boys are rifling through their movie Rolodex to find the shining examples of motherhood in film. Some might be incredible, some are quiet, some are simple, and some are downright super heroes. But whoever they are, this week the LoFi Top 5 honors the title that is "Mom" in the best way they know how - a list of movies. Happy Mother's Day all!
Camaros, Corollas, and Countaches, oh my! This week the LoFi guys are talking cars. But, as per usual, not how you might think. This episode isn't about car chases or car races. This is all about how the car was used in a movie. From a rusty ol' Gran Torino to a 1960s bus to some true classics, a lot of ground (get it) is covered this week. And one of the boys gets to really nerd out on auto's...but which one? You'll have to buckle up and tune in to find out!
SURPRISE EPISODE! This week, after a series of events, the boys had to do something different. Something quickly. Something surprising. So Jeremy went onto the interwebs, found himself a spinny wheel, loaded some genres, loaded some timeframes, and the LoFi Top 5's very first 10 mInute Top 5 was done. 1990's Action Adventure lists in 10 mins folks. A Mission Impossible...maybe? But these musketeers are prepared to hunt for the best dang Top 5 they can. So listen in this week to see just how much research the boys NEED to do to make a list work, it might surprise you (see what I did there)."
With the Oscars in our rearview mirror, this week the boys wanted to do a little retrospective on The Best Picture category. As it turns out, there are a LOT of winners that both Gen-X Jeremy and Millenial JT took issue with, and it starts all the way back in the 1920s. Jeremy does his 5 words on the fly, JT's list is in complete disarray, it's the sweatiest podcast to date, and all that happens in the first 10 mins. So whether you are On the Waterfront, Up in the Air, In Chicago, or even off in La La Land, fasten your seat belts for the Whiplash this episode is sure to give you.
This week the boys are going back in time, to the week of March 11th, for the release of Ryan Reynolds's new Netflix release "The Adam Project". Of course, the LoFi Top 5 is not a review show. Instead, Jeremy and JT have prepared some games, put together some questions, and come up with all kinds of opinions about the film. Expects lists, expect time travel talk, and expect the perfect amount of Billy Zane talk.

Folks get ready for your hosts to put aside their Millenial and GenX perspectives and dive deep into the career of the one and only Steven Spielberg. Today’s episode has JT and Jeremy each pick their Top 5 “essential” Spielberg productions - the ones we think nobody else could’ve handled as well as he did. And we’ll also suggest 5 also great movies, but that didn’t quite have the same touch. And then we’ll sit back and wait for the angry texts about our blasphemy.
In honor of dear ol' St. Patrick, a Welshman though he be, the lads have a craic this week at the Top 5 Irish movies of all time. It's not all Leprechauns and Pots O' Gold in this episode, oh no. While JT took to the more classic pictures, Jeremy was more of a chancer this week. It was the best of dates, it was the worst of dates. Today’s episode hits all ends of the romance spectrum but is focused on themes of some kind of courtship in movies. So whether it's ball pits in IKEA or colonics in 1990’s Los Angeles, we hit some of the best (and not-so-best) date nights in movies. Also, we announce some pretty big news about the LoFiTop5 in this episode, give a listen!
While your hosts knew that in the week leading up to the Super Bowl we’d be doing a football episode, we definitely called an audible once we discovered… there are not actually that many football movies!? Worse yet, some of our favorites (well, one in particular) are really more of a perseverance coming-of-age story, so we had to take a knee on that one. So let’s call this one a bit of a wildcard, and hopefully, we can all agree it’s a slam dunk of a home run-hitting episode.
While there are no bleeps or blorps in this episode, we are in fact talking about robots. But not just robots, we mean the cool robots. The ones who smoke cigarettes in the high school boys' bathroom and wear leather jackets. OK, maybe not THAT cool, but it is what we’d refer to as… liquid cool.
The 1990s introduced us to many legendary characters, from the kid who fights off the home invasion all the way to the kid who sees dead people. But which of those characters really had a cultural impact, and to whom? This week JT and Jeremy dive into the characters from the 90s who had the longest cultural impact on Millennials and GenX’ers.
As much as most of us want to put 2021 as quickly into the rear view mirror as we can, JT and Jeremy still had a little unfinished business for the year. In a follow-up to last week’s self-referential which picks did we like the most, this time we’re addressing which movies we liked the most. If we do our math right, between us both we saw almost 100 new movies last year. In this episode we whittle it down to the top 5 movies that were new to us - so it’s not just “best movies of 2021” - if we hadn’t seen it before, it counts!
This is the second of our “meta” episodes in which we each pick our top 5 picks of other episodes. It’s a fun way for JT and Jeremy to look back on their work in 2021. Which is about the only thing about 2021 most of us really want to reflect on anyway. But back to the movies everyone, and listen to us talking about us talking to each other…?
It's that most wonderful time of the year when the boys welcome listeners on the podcast to point out where they might have made some missteps in 2021. They get their annual dose of Mama Toeman who uses the platform to confess her love for an actor. Ryan drives through with some thoughts on the food episode. Both Beau and Jeff invite them to ponder the error of their ways from the High School episode. And Kayla makes her first appearance to labor over a 2021 film the boys missed. It's an annual favorite, and it did not disappoint.
This week your hosts take on a very special type of “in memorandum” episode, where we pick the best final performances. Which, if anything, painted a pretty clear picture: most famous actors/actresses do not go out on top. Jimmy Stewart? “Old Man” in 1980’s “A Tale of Africa”. Katherine Hepburn? Small part in 1994’s meh remake of “Love Affair”. But don’t fret, dear listener, as JT and Jeremy dove into their couch cushions for a little spare change and scrounged up some very excellent performances for you to tune into.
While your hosts actually hate most reboots, we have a good reason for that - Hollywood does a lot of rebooting of our favorite films. We maintain instead they should reboot the ones that weren’t so great. But also not the trainwrecks - instead those mediocre films. The ones you walk out of the theater and sorta shrug your shoulders and say, yeah it was fine. But Fine is just polite for Meh. So today Jeremy and JT go through an original set of Meh movies that could all benefit from a little reboot.
It's November, which means awkward mustaches (nailed it), enjoying the foliage, and emotionally preparing oneself for a blissful family Thanksgiving dinner. That means we’re doing the Top Families in Movies - not to be confused with Top Family Movies nor Top Families in Family Movies. We’re talking about the Hoovers, the Addams, the Burnhams, the Jones’s, the Von Trapps, the Corleones… it’s a family affair! Let’s just all hope that uncle Erik (or as we call him all episode long for reasons unknown… Andy) Killmonger doesn’t show up for turkey.
This week the LoFiTop5 guys experiment with a new format, “keep or swap.” In each episode, they pick a performer and evaluate their career in film. One of JT or Jeremy will pick the Top 5 Movies to Keep them in, meanwhile the other picks the Top 5 Movies to Swap them with someone else. In this first episode, our Gen X’er will defend 5 of the Cruisiest Tom Cruise performances. Meanwhile, our Millennial host selects 5 of the not-so-Cruisifying moments in his catalog. Our verdict is you can handle this episode.
This week it's all about the Upper Lip. The good ol' Snot Mop. The Mouth Brow. In cinema, the Soup Strainer has had a glorious, if not downright majestic career. There have been Pirates with the tiniest of crumb catchers, tokers with Grass Grins, and some internationals with full-on Face Furniture. But no matter the style, both Gen-X Jeremy and Millenial JT can agree that these Lip Rugs really brought these movies together.
On the eve of Halloween, nothing seems more fitting to sink your teeth into than the Horror movies. As you might know, Jeremy doesn't take much of a Shining to the genre, so the boys took it as an Omen to bring in a ringer for this episode. They did their best to keep the Screams to a minimum, but you might want to find a Quiet Place to listen just in case. Find out just how well Jeremy has avoided Horror movies, and strap in for a family affair on the LoFi Top 5 this week!
Whether it's bank robbers wearing ex-presidents’ masks, a princess imitating a bounty hunter, or a man somehow fooling his entire family by dressing up as a foreign nanny, there’s no shortage of clever disguises in movies. Then again, there’s just as many “she cut her hair a little short, but she’s not a boy!” or “single most famous person on the entire planet becomes unrecognizable due to glasses” somewhat-less-clever disguises in movies. Regardless, JT and Jeremy have a great time talking through some of the best (and less best) disguises in movies. But srsly, about that nanny-fooling-the-family thing before - really? Nobody could tell? Cmon.
Whether it's seven college friends having a reunion, five dudes cruising around LA looking for a good party, four pals in search of a dead body, or three friends fighting a plethora of gangs in Mexico, when buddies hang out, good times typically ensue. This could also take the form of inanimate objects meeting a new inanimate object or eight kids teaching a ninth how to properly play baseball (and fend off killer dogs). Whatever the occasion may be, rest assured that JT, Jeremy, and their good buddies are always up to discuss the best… buddy… movies.
It's time for another Top 5 list with the Honorable JT's presiding. This week the boys appeal to your more serious side, walking through the Top 5 Movie Lawyers ever to grace a screen. You might think it's the usual suspects, but when a few good men sit down to discuss the law in film, it can be a runaway jury...but we'll let you be the judge.
While most film geeks like us know Citizen Kane was Orson Welles’ first feature film (though there’s a technicality and we talk about it), even we were surprised to discover some other absolutely amazing directorial debuts. In this episode, JT and Jeremy cover their top 5 favorite firsts, including some works by Rob Reiner, Sidney Lumet, John Huston, and even the legendary, the phenomenal, the master of Bayhem - Michael Bay. Also, enjoy a quickie game where Jeremy quizzes JT on some phenomenal second films by directors.
We hope you have a healthy appetite for the latest episode - Top 5 Foodie Movies! As much as we pictured making lists of top food-related movies would be like a fancy breakfast buffet, it ended up a little closer to the high school cafeteria as far as healthy options go. JT summoned a few millennial-oriented tasty treats, while Jeremy struggled to find any generation x-themed movie to chew on. But the guys have a good time, it’s a satisfying meal/listen, and we discovered that basically everyone loves Chef. Enjoy!
We’ll bet you can't hardly wait for this week’s episode, which is definitely not another teen movie podcast - or is it? There are fast times ahead as your not-so clueless hosts debate their Top 5 High School movies. These lists are so good they’ll make you want to scream for a piece of American pie. With or without a cause, you can rebel against our choices, even if you’d be better off dead than getting caught revisiting your high school years.
With the recent releases of Black Widow and Shang-Chi, your hosts decided it was time to have an episode about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This week JT and Jeremy really had to labor over the top 5 list - Top 5 Movies featuring babies. It wasn't an easy list to deliver, but they pushed through it. You might be surprised to see what 1980's movies don't make the list, and you certainly will be surprised what movies from the 2010's do. So while you're nursing your labor day Hangover from partying with your Neighbors, turn on the LoFi Top 5 and look who's talking about movies again! And Away we go!!!!
It’s clear that JT and Jeremy had the time of their life recording this week’s episode - Top 5 Original Songs from Movies, post-1985 edition. While all the stars clearly aligned for them to fight the power and do the right thing, it's a particularly good episode to lose yourself into. JT, repping the Millennial voice, went deep into 90s hip-hop and other tracks, whereas Jeremy was a man in motion exploring music from the 80s and beyond. It may seem like a thousand years since last week’s episode, but we can’t stop the feeling that this is one of the most fun episodes we’ve had.
When it comes to making lists, nobody does it better than JT and Jeremy - and this week’s list is Top 5 Original Songs from Movies (released before 1985). While our gen-x host had no issues going down a holiday road, our millennial friend was barely staying alive to find songs from an earlier era. But, given the boys are always looking on the bright side of life, this episode is worth a listen, And sometimes listening to a good podcast is the best that you can do.
Best fictional sports in a movie, sounds like a great category, amirite? Yeah, so, it isn’t, and the answer is BASEketball, and we’re going to move right along now and instead focus the episode on Top 5 Sports Comedies! This time around Jeremy’s “5 word clues” have a little rhyming convention to them, it’s sort of a shminderella shtory if you know what we mean. JT on the other hand utterly nails Jeremy’s picks while throwing a few curveballs in the mix. None of which would be considered “a bit outside”. So get your peanuts and cracker jacks, do a little face painting, and cheer away for the boys this week.
While nobody can hear our podcast (or scream) in space, this week’s episode covers your hosts’ Top 5 Movies Set in Space. In a little “twist”, Jeremy avoids the entire Star Wars, Star Trek, AND Marvel Cinematic Universe for his picks so is forced to pick some other excellent movies. JT on the other hand has no such boundaries, and definitely gets some of the best of the best in his selections. As always the hosts play the “5 words as clues” guessing game to figure out each other's entries. So whether we’re getting people to the moon, or back from the moon, or never quite making it to the moon, we’re definitely going to need a better combination on the luggage after our fantastic voyage. Both Jeremy and JT thought they had the other ones list pretty pegged walking into this, and somehow they were both right, and wrong. JT plants an anchor as a millennial, man, while Jeremy's Gen-X heart is bravely on display. As maligned as sequels are, every now and then they get them - and then a third part - right. For every Hangover 3 and Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, there’s an X-Men 3: The Last Stand or Alien 3. Er, wait, no - there are some good ones too, right? Spider-man 3? OK OK well, check out this week’s episode of the LoFi Top5 where JT and Jeremy reveal 5 of the greatest part 3’s in movie trilogies. Well, mostly just trilogies, but a few other series somehow make their way in the list, but we collectively ignore things like surviving a nuclear explosion in a fridge.

As we hit the “52 weeks of Top 5 Lists” mark, we’ve decided to revisit or “reboot” the first episode we ever did - the “Most Rewatchable Movies” list. This time around both JT and Jeremy discuss some of their picks from last year and compare which have made the list again for 2021. We also address the origins of “the Shawshank”, have a long discussion about what we both consider the most rewatchable teen movie, and dive just a bit deeper into some classic 80s-era comedies. Jeremy makes some bold statements about 2000’s spy movies and 1900’s actions movies, and we both share a moment on the impact of a certain 70’s era movie about bicycling and quarries. For some people, roughing it means an hour without their phone, for others, it's having your FedEx plane crash near some unknown island and having sports equipment as your best friend. This week’s episode reminds us how far one can go on an all-potato diet and has us question if Goofy is or isn’t a dog. It’s a little meta, maybe a tad self-indulgent, but hey, we’ve picked almost 250 movies this past year - each - and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on our choices. There’s not a person in the business of show who isn’t familiar with the name George Lucas. Beyond the obvious - Star Wars - his contributions to cinema are legendary. In this episode, Jeremy and JT use all their midichlorians to identify the Top 5 George Lucas Creations. And this time around, it’s not just movies, our extended universe of Lucasisms goes pretty deep (we use all the midichlorians for this one!). In addition to the flicks, we explore gaming, technology, TV, and one very, very deep… note. Wesa think yousa should check it out!
Lizards and apes and gremlins, oh my! Welcome to our Top 5 Monster Movies episode, where we utterly redefine monsters to include “cute fuzzy CGI things who go through doors”, “weird CGI things with eyes in their hands”, and, of course, BrundleFly. Our lists also include a musical, a monster who lives in a flower pot and sings, a camouflage monster from outer space, and … the wind. Listen and play along to try to guess which monster has excellent “hand-eye coordination”!
Over the course of recording episodes, both JT and Jeremy noticed a recurring pattern of movies with far too low Metacritic scores - it particularly caught our eye when discussing Wall Street, with a mere 56 on the ol’ MC. Now it’s no perfect movie or anything, but if the Jaden Smith Karate Kid remake gets a 61, and Oliver Stone’s own take on JFK has a 72, well, #justsayin. And if Superbad has a 76, how does Ferris Bueller’s Day Off only get a 61? And we’d agree that the witty Midnight Run deserves its 78 score, but shouldn’t a classic like Beverly Hills Cop be sitting in the mid-80s? Enjoy our take on the absolutely criminally underrated movies of our times.
In this week’s “5 Questions About… Jojo Rabbit” we have a little chat about why it’s so poorly received on Metacritic (59?) and try to channel our best Taika Waititi in making our games a bit more outlandish than usual. Jeremy quizzes JT on some famous actors born with far-less famous names, including Oscar winners Krishna Bhanji and Caryn Johnson (definitely not who you think they are!), and even Oscar nominee Albert Einstein (from Broadcast News and Defending Your Life). We also have a lively discussion about up-and-coming Thomasin McKenzie, her phenomenal performance in this movie, and dive into if she’d have made a great Hermione or Katniss (yes and yes). It’s a better than so-so listen, and hopefully, we don't have any no-nos in our talk about Jojo.
This week the Kids don’t go Solo when discussing the Top 5 Movies With a Single Word in their Title. One Memento from the episode is almost getting Whiplash from the back-and-forths, almost like playing a game of Dodgeball. Babe, we gotta tell you these Goodfellas almost had to take an Airplane! to Casablanca (with a stop at a Casino) to get through all the movies they wanted to chat about. But they were inspired by great leaders, from Gandhi to Patton to Lincoln, the kind of faces we’d see at mount Rushmore. So unless you’re an Alien or suffering the summer Heat in Chinatown, check out this episode (maybe listen with your friend Harvey, or maybe Willow the Elf?) before we record again next Friday.

It’s pretty safe to say that any movie podcasters like ourselves would love an evening with a Steven Spielberg or a Martin Scorcese (aka Eyebrows), but what about the rest of Hollywood directors? We have a fun chat exploring differing perspectives from Jeremy (repping Gen X) and JT (millennial), whose ages impact this category in so many ways. The guys have a whiplash back & forth comparison of two “classic” college films, Animal House and PCU, but you don’t need to be a real genius to listen. In this week’s episode, we dive deep into “That Guys”, a gender-neutral term for our favorite character actors in movies - you know, when you see a Xander Berkeley or, as our friends at the Rewatchables puts it “Joey Pants” on-screen and you say to yourself, hey, I know that guy. Yeah. Them! In fact, we can name drop our James Hongs and Bruce McGills and Larry Hankins all day, and we’ll bet you have no idea who we’re talking about (respectively - the bad guy from Big Trouble in Little China, D-Day from Animal House, and Carl from Billy Madison). Also features a brief discussion of why there aren’t more women as well-known character actresses - and how we hope that’s changing in more modern times.
With Jeremy out of commission this week for Spring Break, you might say that JT was in a bit of a pickle. An American Pickle, even...So in a rare solo-episode, JT dives into the 2020 film An American Pickle! Somehow he manages to talk about Encino Man a lot more than you might think anyone should, which Franco is the best Franco, and, of course, a fair amount of BIlly Zane talk. t just arrived on HBOMax this week, but we watched this solid movie about an obviously very important story. Now regular listeners know: we aren’t professional reviewers, and we do enjoy being the “LoFi” guys - so this is us taking the lighter side of the discussion. And we can prove it because we’re ready to throw down this premonition “this is the only podcast to legitimately weave in discussions of Judas and the Black Messiah with Miss Congeniality, Point Break, The Karate Kid, and Dirty Dancing.” Finally, as always, we do have a Billy Zane reference, he’s like the “hidden Mickey” of our 'cast.
While Hobbs & Shaw is the spinoff we clearly deserved, JT and Jeremy aren’t so sure it’s the one we needed. This episode has the gents going through their pantheons of favorite movies, selecting the characters they just need to see moar of. With a particular, but not manic, focus on henchmen/buddies, selections include (only) a few superhero movies, the greatest swordsman that ever lived, a lamp-loving sidekick, and the manager of an elite underground hotel. As a final hint, some of the actors/actresses include Robert Duvall, Donald Glover, Tessa Thompson, Kevin Smith, and one of both of our fave’s John Leguizamo.
We just rewatched 1964’s classic comedy, Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Truncate Extremely Long Titles. This week JT and Jeremy debate whether or not it’s actually a comedy or a thrillomedy, and find a way to compare and rank it against Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as well as… Fight Club? Yep, we went there. We also try to find the common theme with Cloud Atlas and Monty Python and the Holy Grail (we promise - there is one). Finally, JT pitches us on how he’d take on the loose script Kubrick outlined for “Son of Strangelove”.
This week (episode 37) the boys tackle the question: what songs in a scene are so iconic you couldn’t possibly picture (hear?) it differently. And while we’ll never spoil an episode, it’s safe to assume we have a guy with a boombox and an AMC Pacer with some headbanging in this one. But we also have some John Denver, some Elton John, a little Mancini, a little Skynyrd, and of course, Felix Mendelssohn. In our eyes, this episode might just take you to the danger zone, but hopefully, you don’t feel under pressure to give it a listen.

Kicking off February, JT and Jeremy do their best at identifying the funniest villains (loosely interpreted) they’ve seen on screen.
