Pod Stallions 126: Who Mourns for Doctor Who?We know what you’re thinking. With a headline like that we’re bound to be Who-bashing all episode, right? (You might also be thinking, ‘bout time they showed up!). Au contrair, my friends. Doctor Who is one of the many things that brought us together as friends, and is something we love deeply. With recent news reports and all the online chatter about the current state of New Who (still considered ‘new’ after a 20-year return!) and its possible exit, it felt like a good time and good subject to explore on our return from hiatus.

So close the door, hit the Tardis controls from ‘Way Back’ to ‘Present Day’ and prepare to walk in eternity as we give our two pence on all that’s gone down and up with everyone’s favourite Time Lord.

Just remember to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow before you leave.....

Pod Stallions 124: Canadian Movies with Matt Weinhold Back bacon. RUSH. Toques. William frigging Shatner. These are just a handful of the many gifts Canada has given the world. And dang it, they know a thing or two about makin’ movies, too. It’s high time PS celebrated them in an episode, especially since one 1/2 of us claim to be Canadian! (Note: the jury is still oot). And who better to help than our monstrously cool pal Matt Weinhold, Actor/comedian/cinephile/Monster Party Co-host and all-around good egg? All three of us sing our lists of cinematic gold from the Great White North, from comedies to horror to thrillers and beyond.Take off with us, won’t you? (Apologies, that was too easy but obligatory)

The Elephant Man, Frank Booth, Agent Cooper and Bob, Sailor and Lula and the big sweaty Baron with bad skin. Just some of the denizens in the film world of David Lynch. It’s safe to say the works of Lynch weren’t everyone’s cup of coffee.

Download the show hereAnd that’s as it should be, with most left of center output. But his impact can’t be denied, and as weirdos and movie freaks ourselves, it seemed appropriate to celebrate the late auteur. (Plus the man himself is someone we’d happily spend time with).

But don’t think this is the snooty, art-house ep of PS; we still manage to get Richard Lynch and 80s underwater monster flicks in, too. The owls are not what they seem, but this is a damn fine cup of Pod Stallions. Drink full and descend!

Never let it be said that horror kids can't be romantic and have a soft spot for the psychotic underdog, because following up on our Werewolves October ep comes Famous Phantoms of Filmdom. You know what we mean, from Opera to the Paradise, we cover all the ways the original story has 'bled' into other adaptations and pop culture. So grab your favorite opera mask, throw on a cape and settle in for PS's 2nd October eps all about Phantom menaces. (See what we did there? Note: we won't be covering The Phantom Menace. Or Phantom Power by Super Furry Animals, there's only so much time). PS- We know, we forgot Darkman, all Brian's fault and we'll get to it.

The moon is full, there’s a howling wind, and like a couple of dummies, we’ve decided to stay ON the moors, so the scene is set for some werewolf celebrations.

Episode 119 Pod Stallions: Joe Flaherty TributeLife is swings and roundabouts, we are lucky to live through times enjoying brilliant art, but as the years creep on, we lose more of the artists. Joe Flaherty gave us more laughs than can be counted, and because he means so much to us we do our best to honour him, his many characters and his dependability in the latest Pod Stallions. We, um, also manage to squeeze in commercials featuring Doctor Who actors, Lifeforce, and the cinematic oeuvre of Steve Railsback. It'll all make sense. If we Letterboxed our viewing habits in 2023, we're estimating between us we've spent close to one full month (maybe one with 28 days) watching everything from TV series to movies, highbrow to lowbrow and all points in between. We thought it'd be fun to wind 2023 down by recommending titles to the most discerning listeners in podcastville. So it's another fine episode of 'What We've Been Watching!' on Pod Stallions. Hope it helps!

Pod Stallions 115: Doctor Who at 60We're not ones to dwell on the passage of time (and let's face it, no one wants that shock to the system) but it IS hard to believe that it's now been 60 years since two schoolteachers went to that junkyard for the trip of a lifetime, and Doctor Who began. Luckily, according to the Doctor, time is immaterial. But let's throw caution to the wind and have a jumbo-sized PS episode celebrating Adventures Through Time and Space. It's safe to say DW is embraced and referenced more by us than any other topic, and it's been a long, strange journey. Reverse the polarity, Sonics at the ready, Allons-y!#podcast #podstallions #doctorwho

Before the MCU and Multiverses, before the Snyderverse, before the summers that the Shadow and the Phantom RULED the cineplexes (didn't they?), it was a world when the superhero and pulp characters reigned supreme in Saturday morning serials. The precursor of the modern action movie, their impact can be felt to this day , and since we keep our fingers on the pulse, we thought it was high time we showed them some love. So grab yer popcorn and Buck Rogers Disintegrator Pistols as we thread the projector and eat a bowl of healthy serial(s).

Welcome to the first of what is a new obsession with us, Busted TV Pilots!

For the inaugural episode, we've chosen two absolute doozies starting with the "Man from the 25th Century" AKA "Irwin Allen's Kitchen Junk Drawer." Followed up with Jason's choice, the American version of "Spaced" which, totally doesn't suck.

Then we trail off into topics like Dick Shawn, rare SCTV and voice-over legend Bob Holt.

Got a busted TV pilot for us? Let us know in the Pod Stallions Facebook group!

Keen-eared listeners of the Pod Stallions podcast know that those boys can talk, know a lot of stuff and have opinions, whether they're asked for or not. Each episode peels back another layer of the enigma-onion that is BraSon, revealing more of their likes, loves and mehs. We thought it was a good time to rip another layer off and talk about What We've Been Watching Lately. Comedy, horror, Love Boat, documentary, sci-fi, Love Boat and punk rock are all discussed as well as the Love Boat. It's like a convo between video store geeks if we still had video stores to hang out in. Give it a whirl; who knows? You just might get turned on to try some suggestions and may even be familiar with others. But don't forget, Be Kind, Rewind.

Topics include Green Room, VFW, Love Boat, Doctor Who, Are you being served?, Star Trek, History of the World Part 2, Battlefield Earth, The Intruder Within, GORP, Patrick, Australian Cinema, Documentaries, Bob and David, Dick Shawn, Failed TV pilots, #podstallions #plaidstallions #toyventures #startrek #loveboat #tvpilots

LISTEN HERE “Pop quiz: What do The Flintstones, The Wild Wild West and Car 54, Where Are You? have in common? Is it that they could ALL have used more Victor Buono? Well, frankly, YES. But more importantly, they’ve all had big screen re-makes/re-imaginings for this episode! Yes, as usual, we do the work, so you don’t have to, and there’s a lot of ground to cover. Sitcoms, cartoons, cop shows and SNL sketches (??) have gotten so many theatrical incarnations that this Ep could be one of a series we do. So pull up a chair, turn up the volume and get ready to play along as you inevitably yell more titles at the speakers as we explore ‘From Small Screen to Silver Screen’ on the new episode of Pod Stallions.

Who comes to mind when you think creepy, mysterious, and spooky? That's right, the Pod Stallions boys! Oh, and The Addams Family, and since we clearly have so much in common, we thought it best to wrap up our October '22 celebrations by praising the Addamses in all their incarnations.

Since our 1st Oct. '22 Ep was The Munsters, and the two have gone hand in hand for decades, we thought it a good pair of bookends. The Coke to Pepsi, Beatles to Stones, and Trek to Wars of monster-themed sitcom comparisons; who comes out the winner is your personal choice. So settle in, snap along and enjoy some quality Family time. All together now...da-da-da-Da (snap-snap), da-da-da-Da..

Well, Summer's just around the corner and going out to the movies seems to be making a comeback, so what better time to reminisce about those way-back muggy months when the inside of a cool theatre was a weekly ritual? This time it's the Summer of '84: Venkman's, Thugees, Starfighters, Mogwai, Nerds and the C.H.U.D (!!!) are just some of the miscreants we spent our hard-earned summer job cash on and we're all the better for it. Once again Pod Stallions does what we always do: turn death into a fighting chance for life. Um, and also wax lyrically about useless trivia for 90 minutes. It's Sex Crime 1984 on the new ep of PS (Extra points for whoever gets that reference ) Enjoy and don't feed us after midnight! - JL DOWNLOAD THE SHOW HERE Do you miss toy magazines? That's why we created Toy-Ventures magazine, an old-school print publication dedicated to vintage toys from the 1960s to the 1990s. It's hard to believe, but just a short time ago we had the wacky idea to record the pop culture-centric phone chats we regularly had, in the hopes that there'd be a few other people out there that would find them amusing. Seems our instincts were right, cuz we shut our eyes, hit the gas, drove off the cliff and before we knew it, we headed towards syndication. Yes, it's the long-awaited, much mythologized and soon-to-be legendary 100th Episode of Pod Stallions! And rather than just a reel of highlights, we thought what better way to mark the occasion than to celebrate the cinematic achievements of Batman. Sometimes pop art sensation, part-time Dark Knight Detective and occasional nipple-fied cartoon. He's done it all, and so have we, in Episode 100: Silver Screen Batman! (With some 'guest' surprises along the way, as close to a Tonight Show-clip-fest as we could get on audio). Two for Tuesdays. New Release Wednesdays. Three-Day Rentals. Skinemax listings? Or familiar terminology from the video store days? As it happens, it's both! But this episode of Pod Stallions we're focusing on the latter, the glory days of the 80s-90s video revolution. Rentals changed the world, some movies never got to theaters, we had access to movies we'd only ever read about, and best of all we saw the day that we could OWN copies of the films we loved. It truly was a great era to live thru, and we're celebrating all of it in the new Pod Stallions, from video store employee chums (and working at one ourselves) to building home libraries, it's an all-new copy of Pod Stallions about our Videocassette Pasts. All loyal listeners of Pod Stallions know we live by the 'variety is the spice of life' philosophy, so we thought it was time we celebrated that. In this episode, we welcome producer/clip expert Steve Kozak to our third chair, and we discuss the "variety special" trends of the 70s & 80s, and deep dive into The Star Wars Holiday Special, in advance of Steve's upcoming doc 'A Disturbance in the Force' (Jason is a producer on it, too!). Along the way Wolfman Jack, Quincy, John Vernon, Paul Lynde, and Shields & Yarnell (naturally) get mentions. ‘Well, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ has come and gone, with nary a word said about it. We were so shocked, we decided to step up and finally give it the attention it’s been lacking a whole month later. Yes, it’s another stimulating Pod Stallions minisode, almost all about the Snyder Cut (and the DC/WB movies in general & lots of the usual straying). But have no fear, the mustache thing barely gets a mention but the 1980s "Bodyswap" movies sure do! Oh, You are welcome, world! We tackle the topics that no one dares to!”

“What do ‘Fawlty Towers’, ‘On the Buses’ and ‘Open All Hours’ have in common? If you answered ‘They’re all classic UK shows that got crappy US remakes’, you’d be right! But you’d have to add, ‘Brian & Jason also know way too much about it’. For every ‘All in the Family’, there are a dozen ‘Amanda’s By the Sea’s, and we cover a ton in the new Pod Stallions. Once again, the topic you didn’t know you needed, ‘Bad Cover Versions: US Misses of UK Hits’. (Plus, lots of detours along the way). Happy belated Halloween everyone, we taped this one on the 31st and due to a myriad of technical issues didn't get it out at the witching hour but as a wise person said to us, most "Treehouse of Terror" episodes land in November and nobody cares.
