She not only overcame her disability to become an international para-athlete but has also become an inspirational role model through her work with people facing different types of challenges – educating economically under-privileged children; vocational training for rehabilitated sex workers & AIDS-affected children; and emotional and physical rehabilitative techniques for physically challenged individuals.Today, she is a leading voice for young people with disabilities in the Commonwealth and the United Nations and has represented India at many international forums, including the Commonwealth Youth Forum and Bright Ideas Talk at Commonwealth Secretariat.In 2021, Devika was awarded the National Youth Award by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports; and the Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2015 for her work with underprivileged people with disabilities and towards disability awareness and universal inclusion in India. She has been honoured amongst the Women Transforming India by Hon. Vice President and United Nations; and was listed as an honouree on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List 2020. In her career as a para-athlete, Devika has won three medals at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix, and multiple golds at the National Para-Athletics Championships between 2010 and 2015.Devika holds the unique honour of being one of only two youngsters, chosen from across the Commonwealth, to speak at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 (CHOGM) in London in front of Heads of State of 53 nations, including the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi and the entire Royal Family. Daniel Spitzer is a mission-driven entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to building businesses that solve big problems at scale. It’s a journey that started seeing the socio-economic and environmental challenges faced in the region, and coming to the belief that private business was the best way to address those issues.In the years that followed, Spitzer built a vertically integrated forestry products manufacturer (TPP) that planted over 100 million trees as part of its business model, and shortly thereafter built Mountain Hazelnuts. The Company’s mission is to generate strong financial returns while creating sustainable income for 15% of Bhutan’s population, while addressing the country’s key social and environmental issues. Since 1993, Daniel has developed ventures that successfully combine financial objectives with social and environmental goals, including Plantation Timber Products, which he built into China's largest sustainable forestry company. With state-of-the-art processing facilities and 1,000 PTP retail stores, PTP engaged 700,000 subsistence farmers in planting fast-cycle trees used to produce fiberboard panels as an import substitute for plywood made from SE Asian rainforests. Previously, Daniel was Partner & Managing Director of the General Atlantic Group in Asia. Steven Moore is a former leadership chief of staff in the House of Representatives who founded the Ukraine Freedom Project. Initially, UFP helped evacuate Ukrainians from hot spots like Kyiv and Kharkiv. Now, the organization provides food, medical supplies, generators, Starlinks and other needed supplies to the front where international organizations and larger NGOs don’t go.Moore has extensive relationships in Washington D.C., both on the Hill and off. He utilizes these relationships to provide help to Ukraine in ways other aid workers cannot. Edwin Keh is the CEO of The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel. He is also on Faculty at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology where he teaches supply chain operations.
Until April 2010 Edwin was the SVP COO of Wal-Mart Global Procurement. Edwin co-founded the Consortium For Operational Excellence in Greater China (COER GC) sponsored by the Wharton School and Tsinghua University.
Edwin had a career as senior executive with several US consumer goods and retail companies. He was the Managing Director of Payless Shoesource International, Donna Karan International, and Country Road Australia. He also worked for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

The last few weeks have been some of the most difficult I have known in all my years of entrepreneurship, and I know many are facing similar situations where a lot of uncertainty in the air and a well laid plans for 2020 are being tossed aside.
But, as I have come to understand through my conversations with entrepreneurs from around the region, regardless of what is happening in the world, if you are going to succeed you need to keep showing up to work, hunker down, and continue along the path.

About Krie
Believing in the 3 Ps “People, planet and profit,” Krie operates on the principle of faith in humanity, in the process of which she has created a story that inspires and produces concrete change in society. The mechanical engineering graduate and Dean’s Lister from Ateneo first joined the Rustan’s Coffee Corporation, before heading the corporate social responsibility program. After 8 years, she quit to research on social entrepreneurship.
After several trial and errors, she hit upon natural cleansers. Messy Bessy, launched in 2007, is now a recognisable and preferred home and personal care product line, mostly for its natural ingredients, environmental sustainability, and innovative composition. This venture also involves employing at-risk young adults, many of whom were formerly abused, trafficked, incarcerated, and impoverished.
For this, she set up HOUSE (Helping Ourselves Through Sustainable Enterprises) in 2015, a safe haven and educational program. Despite facing tests motivating workers and managing students, the HOUSE has produced more than a dozen college scholars. In 2016, she partnered with The British Council Phillippines for its first nationwide effort to promote social entrepreneurship.

In this episode, I speak with Charlene Tan from Good Food Community about her journey to build the Good Food Community platform in Manila.
Good Food Community, aims to make local communities sustainable by connecting organic farmers and “enlightened citizens” in a program called Community Shared Agriculture. During my recent trip to Delhi, I had the opportunity to sit down with a fantastic young entrepreneur named Monish Siripurapu.
Initially learning about his work through the UNEP video Indian architect looks to nature to cool without chemicals, we sat down for a couple of hours (in the rain) to discuss the challenges he sees, the products he is building, and how he is looking to create a decentralized business model to bring it all to scale.

He received the prestigious JN Tata scholarship in 2015 for his PG Diploma in Robotic Fabrication from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Spain.

For the last 10 years, I have spent the majority of my time looking at sustainability as a function of urbanization, and the resource footprints of urban residents, in Asia.
Particularly how will Asia' urban systems be challenges by the movement of the next two billion Asians moving into cities (by 2030), and what the role of entrepreneurs and innovators will be as THE force to deliver the solutions required for sustainability in local environments, economies, and communities.
So, while the news surrounding Chennai's water shortage is now top of mind, and in keeping in mind there are dozens of other cities in India that are under similar threat, earlier this year I met with an amazing entrepreneur named Dhrav Khanna of Delhi based Triton Foodworks and interviewed him about his work.
It was an amazing discussion, similar to those I have had in Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong, and while I was impressed by his systems, and saw similar challenges in business model, the one thing I really appreciated was in his approach to measuring how much water his systems saved against traditional farming.

When I met Tom Stader nearly 15 years ago, both of our organizations were just getting off the ground, and over the last couple of years he and I have spent a lot of time together hashing through EVERYTHING. Including the challenges that both of us faced as we built out our organizations, the stress of that work, the impacts of that stress on us, and how we look back on that now.
Topics that I have rarely seen addressed publicly, but ones that I am honored Tom agreed to share as an update to his first interview with me two years ago. When everything was seemingly on the cusp of going to the next level.

Tom Stader is the Founder and Board Chair of The Library Project, an organization that donates libraries to under financed schools and orphanages in Cambodia, China and Vietnam.

A bit of a different interview this week. In short, because it is not an interview, but the recording of a recent Q&A that my friends and I had while attending the 2019 Points of Light conference in Delhi.
Someone that I had previously tagged as an entrepreneur that I MUST interview while in Delhi, Anshu Gupta's insights into delivering and measuring impact, were genuinely some of the most refreshing I have heard in a long time. He says the things that others want to, but don't, and in doing so he captures everyone in the crowd. Even those who do not agree, which given his experience and the way he is able to contextualize his stories, is hard to do.

With fewer issues more important in the area of sustainability than water, I sat down with Maarten Ter Keurst from Pureterra Ventures in Shanghai to talk about the work of his fund to identify and incubate water startups.
Identifying, and executing investments aside, where I think this interview will be of particular interest to entrepreneurs is the work that that they do to help entrepreneurs commercialize their idea through supporting the development of leadership and business skills. Building an organization whose mission is to rid the world of plastic, while at the same time elevate the lives of Hong Kong's elderly trash pickers, is no easy feat.
For V Cycle's Eric Swinton though, this is his mission, and for the last year he has been making a lot of progress with the launch of his 10 ton challenge. A challenge that is engaging a number of communities on the issues of plastic waste, while at the same time, bringing additional income for a number of elderly recylcers.
While fulfilling, the progress hasn't come easy, and in this interview we not only talk about the challenges of building V Cycle, but how he is able to maintain his emotional balance through the ups and downs.

Learning about Tong Horsuwan's work to build, and operate, more than 20 rooftop farms in Bangkok was one of the best conversations I have had to date throughout their series.... and that was before he told me he was only 25.

There are few things more iconic to Bangkok than the Tuk Tuk. They are loud, fast, and belch some of the most toxic two cycle fumes imaginable, but as a primary means of transportation for many, they are essential part of getting around Bangkok.

About Jeff:
Two years ago he started writing a blog which slowly turned into a humanitarian movement.
Jeff started a group called impactHK which relies on the power of numbers to do great things for the less fortunate in Hong Kong. ImpactHK has raised tens of thousands of dollars for those living in caged homes, raised money to pay for a young girl’s cleft lip operation and donated to the homeless once a month for 20 straight months. Starting with only a few friends, impactHK now regularly moblizes 30-40 volunteers for each project and event.
ImpactHK is not only a beautiful thing for the relief that its provides to the less fortunate. It also brings an awareness to the general public and provides them with an opportunity to make real change.
Jeff also started a society called Love 21 Foundation, which is dedicated to bettering the lives of those living with Down syndrome and autism in Hong Kong, a community he has passionately worked with for over eight years.

Since meeting Christoph nearly three years ago, I have come to understand that he is one that sees the biggest challenges that we face as opportunities to disrupt markets, and I wanted to find out about his process.
Already in a position to reach more than a billion consumers, he has built an organization where aspirations lead to discoveries which translated into products, that can then be brought to the market. About Jack
Founder of World Toilet Organization (WTO), has been a successful businessman since age 24. Having achieved financial success in his 40s, Jack felt the need to change his direction in life and give back to humanity – he wanted to live his life according to the motto “Live a useful life”. Jack soon left his business and embarked on a journey that saw him being the voice for those who cannot speak out and fighting for the dignity, rights and health for the vulnerable and poor worldwide.
Jack discovered that toilets were often neglected and grew concerned that the topic was often shrouded in embarrassment and apathy; talking toilets was taboo! Jack felt this led to the neglect of restrooms island wide. In 1998, he established the Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) whose mission was to raise the standards of public toilets in Singapore and around the world.
It soon became clear that there were no channels available to bring these organisations together to share information, resources and facilitate change. There was a lack of synergy. As a result, in 2001, Jack founded the World Toilet Organization (WTO) and four years later, the World Toilet College (WTC) in 2005.

In this episode of Entrepreneurs for Good, I speak with Gift Chantaranijakorn of Ma:D Hub in Bangkok. It is an interview I recorded a few months back, and is coming a week after she announced that she will be closing the Ma:D Hub, and in part because of the blind spots that she had to overcome to build a community that could financially sustain itself.

About Sompong Sompong was born in a rural village in Surin province, on the Thai-Cambodian border. He grew up in a poor farming household as the fourth of five children. As a top student of his class, Sompong earned a full university scholarship. Faced with limitless career opportunities, he chose to pursue a degree in social work.
Sompong Srakaew founded the Labour Rights Promotion Network (LPN) in 2006 because of the injustices he saw in the treatment of migrant workers in Thailand’s seafood processing industry. Sompong began working on migrant worker issues as early as the 1990s, after graduating with a degree in social work.
In 2008, Sompong co-founded the Migrant Working Group, a collective of Thai and international organizations working on policy advocacy for migrant children and migrant workers in general. In 2012, he co-founded Partners for the Rights of Children on the Move, a collective of 20 COs working to protect migrant children and women.

About Pol After graduating with a MA in International Relations, Pol devoted the first years of my career to the academic and non-profit sectors where he worked in Europe and Asia on a wide range of issues from education to human trafficking, gender equality, or human rights.
In 2012, life brought Pol to Hong Kong where he had the chance to connect with the local organic farming movement, where he realised the potential of urban farming to transforming the way we currently grow, consume and think about food.

In this episode, I speak with Abigail Smith, who a year and a half ago established Thai Harvest SOS. An amazing organization that has, in just a short time created a process that is able to safely redistribute more than a ton of food a day to more than 20 communities in Bangkok.
For Abigail, she sees this time as a pilot for building the process, systems, and support needed to take this to tthe next level, and in my conversation with her we discussed a wide range of different systems that she is focused on, trying to nail down, or is struggling to bring to scale.

About Abigail Thai Harvest SOS is a charity dedicated to the reduction of food waste and the redistribution of food fit for for consumption but not sale to those that need it.
Thai Harvest SOS collects non-sellable but consumable food free of charge and sends it to communities where it can be of use. Food not fit for consumption is sent to local farms for composting.
Abigail Smith, originally from the U.S., is the group's operations director for Thailand and is responsible for driving its mission to "reduce food waste and use it in the most meaningful way."

A few years back, I met Pat Dwyer, founder of The Purpose Business, at a friend's conference in Singapore. We were on the same panel, and we had a BLAST sharing our experiences and insights to the crowd, and given neither of us were invited back to speak again it is safe to say that we left a lasting impression on the crowd.

As the world may be finally waking up to the challenge that plastic is presenting out environment, and for many, the plastic beverage bottle is one of the products that is front and center.
In Hong Kong though, the people at Urban Spring think they have a solution that will help reduce the number of plastic bottles that the city is sending to landfill. Something that over the last two months has grown more urgent as China has closed its borders to waste imports.
To learn more about their mission, and how they are attacking the challenge of getting consumers to act more responsibly, I spoke with their CEO Ada Yip to learn more.
