If you’re a regular listener to my show, then you know by now that I’m always excited to introduce you to intriguing creatives who are making a positive impact in their fields of expertise.

Today, I’m especially excited for this conversation as in some ways I feel like this particular guest and I have been doppelganger’s in both experiences and creative choices. She also happens to share one of my core beliefs that it’s never too late to pursue one's dreams.

Now a full time voice and on-camera actor as well as a voice over coach, Jennifer “Jenn” Sims, was deep into her career as the Director of Broadcast at one of L.A.’s top ad agencies, she worked on 100s of commercials with talent agents and casting directors and listened to thousands of voice actor’s auditions. She also directed voice actors, including Emmy and Oscar winners; such as Donald Sutherland as the voice for a national healthcare campaign and produced network promos starring the incomparable voice legend, Don LaFontaine, to name a just few.

As glamorous as the world of advertising appears to be in the content it creates, it can also be, as Jenn says, very toxic, and her work environment was becoming increasingly so, prompting Jenn to reflect on what she really wanted to do when she began her career in the first place; that of being an actress; as she spent years honing her quirky sense of humor while studying comedy and improv at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade, The Groundlings, (which landed her on-camera commercials for Uber, Snapchat and WebMD) and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. It was during a recording session, that Jenn realized her passion for acting was undiminished and made the decision to quit her job to pursue a full time career in voice over!

However, in Jenns own words, she was “older” than most people who pursue full time acting. And for anyone who is familiar with how youth oriented show business is; especially in Los Angeles, it wasn’t exactly a text-book recipe for success.

Leaving that coveted Director of Broadcast position was a huge risk but one she was willing to take, and so Jenn took that leap. I’d like to extend the net by welcoming Actor, Storyteller, Coach and “Smarty Pants”, Jennifer Sims to 19 Stories

I hope you’ve all had a beautiful and rejuvenating summer. I’m recording this episode on the eve of the Autumn Equinox. I imagine we’re all beginning to pull out those comfy sweaters for the cooler weather that is right around the corner!

I’m delighted to be back with a new season of episodes beginning with the very special guest that’s joining me today.

The descriptor's “bestselling author, global sailor and activist”, used to introduce Heidi Love, fails to give full measure to who this amazing woman is. (She’s definitely all of those but oh, SO MUCH MORE!)

Heidi was born in the small Alaskan town of Seward, Alaska, where her missionary father, mother and older brother moved to from Pennsylvania prior to her birth then eventually moved to Philadelphia when Heidi was six.

Now living in Eliot Maine, her cache of accomplishments include marketing strategist and cofounder of Vont, a Maine-based $7 million dollar digital marketing agency along with its sister agency, Ethos; a full-service, multi-platform branding agency. Love has earned an MBA, a Women of Achievement Fellowship, and graduated from the Institute for Civic Leadership. She is an active board member of Safe Space Radio and a former board member of the Maine Women's Fund.

As impressive as those accomplishments are Heidi's quest for healing from childhood violence, and its ensuing trauma,led her to embark on a five-year, 12,000 nautical-mile sailing odyssey from Maine to French Polynesia that was 43 years in the making resulting in a life redeemed and an incredible message of Hope.

In May of 2024, Heidi released the memoir of that journey, Laughing at the Sky, Wild Adventure, Bold Dreams and a Daring Search for a Stolen Childhood, which ranked #1 in New Releases in four different categories on Amazon, which we’ll be talking about today.

The first thing my guest, Paul Schmidt, would like you to know about him, is that as a single dad, his teenage son, Robbie, is his world and his reason for everything. Which is incredibly endearing considering the level of success he’s attained in a variety of professional and creative endeavors.

Perhaps his success is due to being cast at the age of six in the role of “God” in his school play and that has “anointed” his efforts ever since.

For years Paul would continue his Thespian pursuits acting in just about anything he could, which in 1980’s Baltimore meant musicals, as he performed in over 20 of them before he turned 18. Once he was out of college, he pursued a successful career in broadcasting, and started on-air at 98 Rock in Baltimore, and eventually went on-air full-time at WRDX in Wilmington, DE for almost a decade.

Adding to his performance repertoire, Paul did stand-up comedy and owned and operated Christina's Comedy Zone at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino for 3 years, which won Best Comedy Club in Delaware Today Magazine. He also did a year of improv in the Baltimore troupe of ComedySportz.

For the past 25 years, Paul has poured his stage and on-camera acting experience into commercial and corporate voiceover work, and voicing for hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses via explainer videos, e-learning, corporate training, medical narration, and audiobooks.

As a community builder and business coach, Paul created the VO Freedom Master Plan, a voiceover marketing program designed to generate consistent opportunities for voice actors to book work, and the VO Pro Community, a private, professional, global community created to meet the needs of voice actors and audiobook narrators who want to take their careers to the next level.

My guest today, Christy Harst, has been heard on the World Series, Monday Night Football, and the NBA Finals as one of the national voices of YouTubeTV. She’s also the national voice of John Deere, and has voiced dozens of television, streaming, and radio ads.

Her career in voiceover began in college when she applied for a news internship at a local classical radio station. It was during her interview that the station manager told her she had a good voice, escorted her to the studio, recorded her reading the Star Spangled Banner and then suggested, “You’d do well in voice overs.”

Two decades later, Christy is in fact “doing well” and continues to work from her home based professional studio. She loves and excels at what she does and it shows in her body of work. Plus, she’s the only one I know that has ever voiced about the dangers of Bed Bug Mating!

Christy grew up in a rural town an hour outside of Cleveland, competed in cooking and public speaking as part of the 4-H program. After graduating college Christy experienced several terrifying situations, including being robbed in her first post-graduate job. And five years ago she suffered a mild stroke.

Christy, by any measure, has been successful in the world of VO, and yet she is on a mission to change the sound of a genre of voiceover that for too long has been dominated by men….the world of sports promos. Her Building Doors campaign seeks to literally change the narrative of sports promos by demanding equal opportunities for female voice actors not just in sports, but in male centric brands as well. Her goal is that the door will be built and always remain open.

She’s even curated a personal YouTube appeal to her beloved Cleveland Browns to be their secret weapon by being their “first female voice to break through the noise!”

Today’s guest, author Hannah Sward, has quite the story to tell. So much so, she wrote about it in her memoir Strip, an International Book Award Finalist, Reader’s Choice Award Finalist and Book Soup Bestseller…which is quite the homage to her late father; the renowned poet and novelist Robert Sward.

Widely published in literary journals in the US, Canada, and the UK, her work has also appeared in publications such as LA Times, HuffPost, and many others. She was a regular contributor at The Fix and Erotic Review and columnist and editor at Third Street Villager in Los Angeles.

Hannah Sward, was born in the bohemian seventies, abandoned by her mother at the age of two and lived with her father on an island in Victoria, B.C. that had no stores or cars.

At the age of six, she was kidnapped and molested by a stranger, and as she got older, became a stripper and a prostitute with a taste for crystal meth.

Although Strip is often referred to as an addiction memoir, as one book reviewer wrote, “that is just one part of it. Strip is about so much more. It is a book about loss, loneliness, and the yearning for something more.” It is also, as Nobel Prize Winner J.M. Coetzee wrote, “Touchingly honest, and written with a light touch.”

She writes about the silent gurus, sugar daddies, and drinking in the CVS bathroom before therapy sessions in a painstakingly honest, detailed, and often humorous way. ‘Strip’ is a heartfelt memoir revealing Hannah’s journey from innocence to darkness and beyond, to a world of empowerment. It’s that story, that message and the ultimate redemption of her life and talent that we’ll be talking about today.

My guest today, Jennifer Clark, is described as the sound of Humankindness.

Wishing a very Happy New Year to you and yours. I certainly hope your holidays afforded you time to enjoy some rest and rejuvenation, and that 2024 is the year that you’re able to actualize some of your dreams and aspirations.

And speaking of actualizing one’s dreams, I think we can all take a page from my next guest as the term renaissance woman truly applies to Maria Pendolino. She’s a multi-award-winning voice artist working in national television and radio commercials, and numerous other genres of voice work.

Maria is also the President of the Board of Directors for Alleyway Theatre Inc., a professional theater company offering education & development programs to foster the talents of emergent artists from Western New York and beyond.

She also identifies as disabled actor, due to psoriatic arthritis which she was diagnosed with during her rise as a stage and screen actor. She’s proud to use her voice to advocate for disabled performers across the entertainment and media spectrum via The Disabled Voice Actors Database; an online directory of names and contact information of working voice actors who also happen to be people with disabilities.

Adding to her talents are that of a freelance Television and Feature Film Writer with a goal of developing and writing stories about women and disabled people who are at the center of their own stories.

This past October 2023, Maria garnered high praise when she joined USA Today’s Top 10 list of Emerging Entrepreneurs for 2023. I’d say a huge congratulations are in order, and yet the recognition is a bit ironic given Maria has been a working actor going on 20 years.

Maria will soon be adding Podcaster to her hugely impressive list of credits as she’ll soon be launching the podcast ‘We Talk for a Living’ where she’ll be talking about the power of using one’s voice, with guests from all different professions and backgrounds.

Hello and a very Happy Thanksgiving week to you and yours. I hope that you’re able to take some down time to enjoy the beginning of this holiday season, eat some good food, and do that which makes you feel rested and rejuvenated.

It’s been about a month since I’ve released a new episode and part of that is due to another project I’ve been working on. So, with that in mind, I am going to be taking a hiatus from releasing any new episodes of 19 Stories: from fear to Hope, until the beginning of 2024. I already have some wonderful guests who’ll be joining me to share more remarkable and encouraging stories.

Before I tell you about my new venture, I want to take this time to give a huge, heartfelt Thank You to all the guests who’ve joined me this past year, and to all of my listeners; whether you’ve been listening from day one or recently joined me. For the third year in a row, this podcast has been nominated for a SOVAS Award by the Society of Voice Arts & Sciences of which I am incredibly honored and grateful for this recognition. The award ceremony will be in Los Angeles in December, and although I will not be attending, I want to give a shoutout to my fellow nominees and voice actors who will be there. Perhaps I’ll have news to share in the new year as to whether or not I was awarded a golden statue. Please know that either way, that I’m grateful for this continued recognition.

Now, for some very exciting news! Much like I mulled around the idea of launching this podcast for several years, I’ve been doing the same with another podcast idea as well. My regular listeners are familiar with the numerous voice actors that I’ve interviewed, who have shared their stories of how they moved through fear to Hope, and having personally heard from many of you, that their messages have been inspirational at a time when you really needed to hear them, I’m hoping this new podcast will inspire you in other ways as well.

The pilot episode of my new podcast, ‘The Voice Kitchen: where recipes and voice talent blend!’ will be launching tomorrow, Wednesday, November 22.

Each week, I’ll be chatting with a talented voice actor who’ll be sharing one of their favorite recipes, while delving into its origin and the meaning it holds for them and their families.

From savory soups to sweet desserts, this podcast has something for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned chef or just starting out in the kitchen, The Voice Kitchen will hopefully leave you feeling encouraged to try some of these recipes for yourself and to experiment with some of your own creations.

I realize the holidays can be a hard time for folks. Whether it’s health or financial issues, family and friends who are no longer with us, or a feeling of melancholy that can set in during the winter months and should you be alone during this season, I encourage you to reach out to the numerous churches, temples and community organizations that prepare holiday meals as I know they’d be delighted to welcome you to their table and love on you with a welcoming heart and a warm meal.

I first met my next guest when the editor and publisher of the Women Who Podcast magazine, Kathy Baron, asked if I’d like to be interviewed for the 2023 Fall issue. And given I love all things podcasting, I of course said yes.

Thus began a new friendship and relationship with writer, copywriter, editor, content creator, and fellow podcaster Chelsea Pegues (Pig-geese).

Chelsea has a Professional Writing degree in Communications from Southern New Hampshire University, graduated Summa Cum Laude and is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

For 14 years, she served as a Senior Administrative Professional at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and continues to have a passion for learning, communication, media and creating content across multiple mediums.

Her desire is to apply her creativity and skills to projects that make a positive impact in the world. Hello and welcome to this very special Encore Presentation of my 27th episode that I released back in August of 2021. Back then, I had a great conversation with my guest Jim Cooper, where among other topics, we chatted about the book he was penning, now known as ‘The Not So Little Book About Cancer Caregiving: Be a Caregiver Warrior and Keep Your Sanity!’, which is part memoir and caregiving advice that was birthed from his time as a caregiver to his wife during her battle with brain cancer.

These days his voiceover credentials run the gamut from audiobooks, E-Learning Modules, Corporate Explainer videos, radio promos and phone messaging systems.

It’s hard to believe we are well into the first quarter of 2023 especially since my guest, Nic Redman, first chatted with me at the end of 2021 in episode 37 along with her co-host and creator of the longest running, most listened to and reviewed podcast in the UK, ‘The Voiceover Social’

It's hard to believe that it's been well over a year since Nic Redman and Leah Marks joined me back in November of 2021 for Episode 37.

My guest, Debbie Weiss is an author, writer, and former lawyer who started writing after she lost her husband George in 2013. He was, as she says, her one and only love since high school; from prom–to cancer, and she had to start building a new life at age fifty, but didn’t know how. She knew she wanted to find love again, but soon discovered the absurdity that is dating at midlife.

Debbie began writing the award-winning blog, The Hungover Widow in 2016 in an effort to dispense empathy and advice on grief and dating after loss.

When she was first widowed, she wanted a book about women like her, who realized they'd disappeared into their marriage, and who needed, at fifty, to learn to be alone for the first time. Debbie wanted a full-hearted, darkly funny, unvarnished account of becoming your true self at middle age. That book didn’t exist so eventually she went back to college, earned her MFA in 2020, in creative nonfiction from Saint Mary’s College of California and wrote that book herself. Available As Is: a Midlife widow’s Search for Love was just released this September 2022. Debbie’s greatest desire in releasing her memoir is to offer hope that life indeed can get better after a devastating loss. It just takes way longer than you think it will, and may not look the way you expected.

She’s also written essays that have been published in The New York Times’ “Modern Love” column, HuffPost, Woman’s Day, Good Housekeeping, Elle Decor, and Reader’s Digest, among other publications.

Clara Harris, may be familiar to you as she was my guest, in what seems like ages ago, for Episode 20. She is an actor, writer, and artist educator with over two decades’ of experience on stage, screen and behind the mic in the world of audio drama & as a fellow podcaster and voice actor.

She recently returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; the world's largest arts & media festival where she produced and performed her solo show, This Moment in America, a live recorded audio drama and sonic collage of the American psyche. Several of these conversations happened during her jaunt across the pond to the Edinbrugh Fringe Festival to attend This Moment in America and to also meet up with her life-long friend Vince Gatten to chat about his starring role in the show The Golfer. Then as any self described “incurable Anglophile” would do, she and Clara headed over to Highclere Castle for a 1920s-themed cocktail party before landing in London, England just as the passing of Queen Elizabeth was announced. Although this was a different kind of story for Sandy, she seized this historic moment and reached back to her audience stateside via a live report from Buckingham Palace with the production expertise of Clara Harris as her producer.

Jim Edgar, is a fellow Bay Area resident who’s been a full time voice actor since 2012 and consistently delivers high quality audio for commercial, character, narration, eLearning and audiobook projects. Prior to delving into the world of voice over, he worked in the cycling industry in the marketing, operations, purchasing, and training sectors.

After attending a weekend voiceover class in 2007, Jim caught the acting bug and knew he had to pursue a career in VO. The many hours spent in recording studios over the years provided him with the expertise to help other voice actors set up their own great audio workspaces. He has assisted hundreds of other voice talents to get their sound sorted out so they can simply focus on being brilliant behind the mic.

What started as a low-key, local VO studio setup service grew into JustAskJimVO.studio, through which he consults online with voiceover and spoken word recording clients around the world. Jim now offers instructional seminars, technical consulting, and studio consultations on an ongoing basis for new and working voice actors.

He was a former VO instructor at Voicetrax SF and currently teaches the Voiceover Training Curriculum at Berkeley Rep School of Theater, is one of the Core Instructors at Voice One in San Francisco, and has led technical webinars for the Global Voice Acting Academy. Jim also created and manages the VO Tech Talk group on Facebook, and publishes a Tuesday Tech Tip blog focused on voiceover studio tips and creative workflow.

For over the past three decades he’s been in your ears one way or another, whether you’ve been watching television or listening to the radio, chances are you’ve heard Thom Pinto’s voice. He’s been using his dulcet tones in everything from the introspective storyteller for Audi, an “everyman” for AT&T U-Verse, a whimsical poet on Clorox and a fun-loving retro announcer for Fuze Tea. As a narrator he is a familiar voice on cable documentaries and series that air on the History Channel, Discovery, The Weather Channel, CBS All Access and the Smithsonian Channel. Since 2007, Tom’s been a promo voice for CBS This Morning, 48 Hours, and the CBS Evening News. He has also been the signature promo voice in my neck of the woods for KRON TV/San Francisco since 1995.

Thom is also a revered coach to hundreds of working voice actors in Los Angeles, San Francisco and across the country through the VO Roadshow. My guest today is actor, screenwriter and producer Joe Coffey, who originally hails from Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in the Irish neighborhood of West Roxbury, otherwise known as “Westie” in a family with deep Irish and Sicilian roots. Joe began acting at the age of 15 in theater and musical theater throughout Massachusetts. After graduating from the prestigious Boston Latin high school, attending Stonehill College for theater, apprenticing at the Williamstown Theater Festival under artistic director and highly acclaimed actor Roger Rees, Joe then studied at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in Waterford, CT as part of the ensemble of the National Theater Institute. He continued his training on a scholarship at the University of Florida from which he graduated with a MFA in 2009.

For the past 12 years Joe has been on a steady rise in stage, film and television. One of his most successful television roles is as Horace Dodge, in the highly successful “The Legend of Dodge” campaigns that he co-starred in for 5 years with Tyler Bryan portraying his brother John Dodge.

Joe is in four films that are currently in post-production with one of them being a film that he co-wrote and produced with the Director Keenen O'Reilly: ‘Micks Out’ about a Boston ICE Agent who is forced to choose between the law and his community. Joe Coffey is speaks to me from Los Angeles, CA.

My guest Veronica Barrera is a fellow podcaster and Native American and Spanish voice actor who originally hails from Saginaw, Michigan and now calls Los Angeles, CA her home.

She graduated from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, with a degree in Industrial Design. In addition to heading her own Company, she has worked with numerous brands such as TRW Automotive,designed custom jewelry for Chrome Hearts, worked on consumer goods, toys, lighting and a gorgeous bar stool design for Vela Bar, among others. Veronica has also tutored and held faculty positions at both the College of Creative Studies and Otis College of Art & design.

In addition to her design work, Veronica has worked in voiceover for the past eight years voicing projects for Toy Commercials, kids e-learning, animation, audio books and anime.

For three years she worked at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles where she observed numerous productions that helped her to hone her craft. Veronica's hidden talent is having memorized some of her favorite raps from the ever-popular musical ‘Hamiliton’.

In Spring of 2019, she launched her podcast ‘Voice acting with Veronica Barrera’ where she interviews voice actors, casting directors, engineers, singers, demo producers, writers and the who’s who within the field of voiceover.

My guest Crystal Lee is a powerhouse of energy, light and positivity.

For over 20 years she has traveled the world serving our country in the US military. First as a Technical Sergeant with the Defense Information Systems Agency and culminating her military career in April 2020 as a Network Systems Architect with the Defense Intelligence Agency.

As a child, Crystal loved acting, singing, and creating characters. Her mother, who is Filipino and her father, who is of German/English descent, had encouraged and nurtured her creativity from an early age and so she resumed her love of performing and voice work to, in her words, “inspire people throughout the world to follow their dreams through storytelling, make-believe, visualization, and magic!”

During her time in the service, Crystal utilized her voice acting talents while participating in field exercises and deployments. Her voice’s unique qualities rendered it invaluable when used to authenticate section callsigns and code-words. She also starred in multiple Armed Forces Network radio and television spots, did some modeling and Hawaiian/Tahitian/Belly dancing as creative outlets from the rigidity of military life.

After she retired, she did a short stint as a government contractor, then a government civilian and quickly realized that between the office politics and her unfulfilled feelings that it was time to leave government work altogether.

After doing so, she says her life opened up to a whirlwind of possibilities and it was time to create her own reality.

Crystal is now a voice actor specializing in voice-over for animation, commercials, and industrials, the Founder and CEO of Crystal J Productions, a service-disabled veteran, Belly Dancing nerd, and magical being, Crystal is an amalgamation of beauty, integrity, discipline, creativity, and quirkiness. Obviously the industry thinks so as well given her commercial demo was nominated for a SOVAS Award in 2021.

My guest today, James Picard, is a master painter, poet, filmmaker and humanitarian, who originally hails from Burlington, Ontario Canada and now makes his home between Vancouver, BC and Studio City, California. He’s been creating works of art since his childhood which led him to study in Ontario at Sheridan College and the Ontario College of Art & Design to become a world-renowned artist working in various mediums. James has also taught art at several renowned art universities and has released three books of his art. His work has been exhibited next to world-renowned art legends such as Picasso, Matisse, Miro, and Warhol.

His use of Ink, pencil and Conte’ crayons to depict portraits of musical and historic icons such as Mozart, David Bowie, Shakespeare and Marlon Brando to a whimsical series that James calls “Duets”, which feature numerous gifted animals such as Cats giving a Recital to his incredibly gifted use of oils to portray his ‘Piano Room Series’, ‘Children Playing Cards’, or his delightful watercolor of Santa Claus, illustrates the depth and range of his remarkable talent.

Having exhibited his artwork in galleries around the globe, it's his work that didn’t make it into the traditional showrooms that garnered James the most attention. His ‘Dark and Wounded’ series of paintings and their unusual staging in abandoned asylums, hospitals and prisons followed by the documentary film of the same name, won numerous awards across the North American Film Festival circuit before culminating in a screening at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in 2018. After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, James is now resuming talks for this to become a feature film.

The guest joining me today is Christine Powers who describes herself as an "activator" for business and thought leaders who are longing to know themselves deeper and step into the next level of their service on the planet. Melding 30 years of expertise in marketing, design, branding, PR, communications, and fundraising, in 2018 Christine created the Philosophers Camp -- a "summer camp" for leaders, inspired by the 1858 Philosophers Camp led by Ralph Waldo Emerson and William Stillman. The Philosophers Camp offers fellowship, wilderness exploration, a cross-pollination of ideas, and restoration of bodies and souls. It’s located on a beautiful 100-acre rustic luxury sanctuary in the Adirondack Mountains of NY.

Chritine studied theater and voice at Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame and is a world-class soprano with a range that spans three-and-a-half octaves. She uses her powerful voice to create meditative and healing lullaby’s such as her ‘I Am Word’ which she wrote after the Paris attack in the Fall of 2015.

She references how she learned “radical detachment” and the grace of “inhabiting the horizon of pure potential” when the entire contents of her home and business burned to ash. She’s nurtured, parented, and as she says “failed three children” that span over a decade in ages, navigating the dynamics of a blended family and maintaining a vibrant (second) marriage.

My guest today, Marisa Blake, is a Bi-lingual voice and on-camera actor, voicing everything from commercials to audiobooks and eLearning narration in both Spanish and English. She’s also the set designer, camera operator and Host for Independent Arts Music Asheville (IamAvl) that brings the Echo Sessions to PBS; a live performance music show that’s now in its 5th Season. Marisa is immersed in the Asheville music scene as an incredibly talented singer, quitarist and keeps the rhythm for several local bands as their drummer.

She’s known to the residents of Asheville as the voice of WLOS TV News 13 and as the creator of Miss Bee’s Audio Reads where Marisa broadcasts herself reading children's books for moms and dads who need a minute and for kids and book lovers to enjoy.

In 2020 Marisa won both an AudioFile Best Audiobooks for ‘We Are Not From Here’ and the Parent’s Gold Choice Award for ‘ Sofia Valdez Future Prez’. In 2021, she was nominated for a SOVAS Award for Outstanding PSA for a project that was directed, sound designed and voiced by Latinas.

Marisa is passionate about bringing awareness to the historic contributions of the Latin community with her ‘Hispanic and Latin X Legends’ series and the artistic contributions of Brown and Black youth through her position as a board member with the Asheville Writers in the School Community otherwise known as A.W.I.T.S.

For someone who was told as a young girl that she sounds Like a Boy, it’s safe to say that Marisa has done quite well for herself.

My guest, David Toback, is a voice actor specializing in Commercials, eLearning and Video Games.

As a former student of the Global Voice Acting Academy, known in the VO industry as the GVAA, he found another purpose and calling as the co-creator of the GVAA Rate Guide; a highly respected and invaluable resource serving the voiceover industry. In addition to maintaining the guide and coaching actors one-on-one on how to best use it, David is the Chief Operating Officer for the Academy.

Prior to voiceover, David explored many paths that were filled with obstacles, challenges, and difficulties. He suffered a horrific leg injury that almost resulted in the loss of his leg. While recovering, he went through a divorce that left him struggling to find his true purpose in life.

It was through his pursuit of voiceover work that David experienced what he calls a spiritual revolution, explosive personal development, and professional growth.

Welcome to the first episode of 2022. For those of you listening for the first time, 19Stories is about women and men from all walks of life overcoming extraordinary things in their everyday lives. Their will to live, press-on & press-through either this current climate of fear, or something else, and move into a future filled with hope.

We’ve made it to another year and I certainly hope you and your family are doing well and that you were able to enjoy your Christmas and holiday. I realize it may have been a very different one for many of us, as there were family and friends that we may not have been able to gather with and others who are no longer with us. My husband lost his own mother this December after a long battle with Alzheimers and yet we know that she is at peace now.

I could think of no better guest to chat with me today than Jen Keefe who was my very first guest when I launched in the Spring of 2020.

When I first spoke with Jen, we talked about her being a fellow podcaster, her blogging, a recent move cross-country from where she was living in Denver back to her home state of New Hampshire, being a mother, home-schooler, her voiceover journey, the importance of addressing and caring for our mental health and of course the pandemic; which at the time seemed like we were at the beginning of reopening businesses and life. Little did we know that 19 months later we would be dealing with a different variant. My guest, Paulinda Babbini has been in the digital imaging business for over 40 years. She is originally from Valley Stream, New York, relocated to Los Angeles in 1975 and currently lives in the Hollywood Hills, in Los Angeles, CA.

As the mother of two beautiful children, her life was turned upside down in 2004 when her 17 year old daughter, Robin was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Robin vigorously fought the battle but lost her dynamic life in 2006 at the age of 20!

To honor Robin’s memory and shine a light on her legacy, Paulinda founded THE OVARIAN CANCER CIRCLE/INSPIRED BY ROBIN BABBINI.

It is her life’s passion and commitment to heighten awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, particularly to young women. She has committed enormous efforts to fundraising, organizing seminars, women’s conferences, and health fairs.

Paulinda is the recipient of the 2015 Women In Leadership Award given by the City of West Hollywood & the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, an honor that pays tribute to her exemplary leadership, dedication and advocacy on behalf of ovarian cancer awareness and education.

For those of you who may be joining me for the first time, 19Stories is about women and men from all walks of life doing the extraordinary in their everyday. Their will to live, press-on & press-through their personal fears and move into a future filled with hope.

So Hello and welcome to a brief recap of the She Podcasts Live! Conference that I attended last week in Scottsdale AZ

For those of you who do not podcast you may be wondering why I would do a recap on an industry event that may not apply to your lives or business. Well for one, it was the first time in almost two years that I had engaged with really anyone outside of a very small circle and certainly on the scale that I did last week.

Given the pandemic you may have been living a similar existence and with more people getting vaxed and life beginning to open up once again, god-willing for real this time, you may be looking to enlarge your circle and engage with more people as well.

I have to say that getting on a plane, being in closed quarters and that close to a couple of hundred people just to get to my destination, raised some fear and anxiety for me and I actually had a bit of a panic attack. So much so that when my cousin picked me up at the airport in Phoenix, I all but walked right past him directly into his car without barely saying hello...thankfully he understood and saw that I was operating out of my normal comfort zone than what I’ve been used to for the past 20 months and graciously forgave me for what otherwise could be construed as a bit rude.

I got to the conference a couple of days early as I had the pleasure of working with She Podcasts for the better part of the past 5 months in putting together their SWAG bags for the event and I was to be working with a team of people, some known and others that became new friends, to coordinate the bags, check-in and registration materials and get settled before the conference began.

I had never been to Scottsdale and to say that the desert during the Fall is magical is an understatement! To add to the majesty, the property where the conference was held was absolutely gorgeous with pools, walking trails, close to Camelback Mountain and my favorite coffee shop that no longer exists in Sonoma County within an almost 2 mile walking distance allowing me to get out and walk my almost 4 miles each morning and take in the beauty of the desert at sunrise. Just Spectacular!

Another apprehension about gathering with so many others after only getting to know a fraction of the 400+ women via Zoom, is that it is always different meeting people in person than getting to know them online. Also, and I’ll speak for myself, how do I behave after not really having live, in-person conversations for so long, will we be supportive of one-another, allow that not all of us will be comfortable being fully present right out of the gate?

Well, the organizers of She Podcasts LIVE! Handled that with great aplomb by not only having badges that designated if you were an extrovert, introvert, etc...but giving color-coded lanyards that also let others know if you were comfortable with close physical contact such as hugs or did you need your space or something in between. Systems that prior to the pandemic would seem silly but ones that made perfect sense as we came together after being apart for so long.

The beauty of the women I worked with on the event was that we were all sympatico in our personalities, humor, and our mutual desire to serve and to also get the most out of the time we were there.

Given I am still relatively new to podcasting, I went with an open heart and mind to learn all that I could in making my podcast better, how to expand my audience and learn what I could about monetizing it so that I can continue producing content on a weekly basis. Podcasting, although very rewarding can be really hard and I wanted to meet with like-minded women who’ve been doing it a lot longer than I have and have learned to be really successful and some very profitable form it.

Although I launched my podcast as a passion project, there are hard-costs associated with podcasts and rather than come out of pocket for those expenses I’d like to be able to cover them.

I share that with you so that if you do have an idea or dream of producing your own podcast that you’re aware of some of what’s involved with doing so.

Speaking of which, after almost 4 days of back to back panels, speakers and podcasts representing every genre, age and racial diversity, networking at the parties or a small while out on a walk or sitting by an intimate fire in the courtyard, my major takeaways is:

Everyone has a unique voice and story that if you have the desire, drive and passion to tell it then podcasting is a perfect medium to do so.
You need partnerships; other people, in this case women, to walk this journey with you, help you in your challenges, hold you accountable and to celebrate your victories.
Your brand, if you will, is your own unique personality and voice and thus your podcast, business, fill in the blank is not going to be the same as someone else so for gosh sakes learn from others but stop comparing your progress or success to someone else
Find what is and what is not working for you, change what you can and then change your mindset about what you can’t
Just because you can do it all doesn’t mean you should! This is a big one for me as for now I am a one-person show when it comes to both producing my podcast and pursuing my voiceover work. Thus one of the reasons that I would like my podcast to be self-sustaining and make a bit of money so that I may actually begin farming out some of the work.
And finally, with the following pearl of wisdom courtesy of the Satellite Sisters, “what women do, think and say should not be dismissed by the news of the day”? Meaning we are more than news bites and what is deemed important on the local news. OUR VOICE MATTERS

And I believe that by being willing to be vulnerable, share our stories, our fears, our bravery and tools to overcome those fears, can we live into the hope of a healthier future.

One of the mixed blessings of attending a conference in a beautifully relaxing and inspiring environment, with equally empowering and beautiful people, is coming down the other side of the “contact high” so to speak.

My heart and mind are full and grateful and yet sad to not be around the energy and acceptance found in a brief moment of time, camaraderie and connection.

It is my desire that by continuing to share people’s stories on 19 Stories: from Fear to Hope is that I’m able to present a common thread of hope that will help you for a moment of time as well.

I want to share that the very next day upon returning from my immersion into the world of podcasting, that I received notification that my little podcast that could was nominated for a SOVAS Award (aka The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences) for Best Podcast. To say that I’m honored would be an understatement and I’m so very grateful to all of my guests who have trusted me enough to share their stories. I look forward to being able to do so for as long as you, my listener, want to hear them.

My guest, Val Kelly, is a bi-lingual English and French voice actor, entrepreneur, wife, mother and podcast producer & host of the ‘Live with Squacky’ podcast.

Her voice over career includes voicing toys from the ‘FurRealFriends’ series of toys, the voice of Fuzzy, in a film by the same name, various cartoon characters and pretty much anything character-based!

In addition to being a Voice actress, Val is the Owner/President/CEO/Executive Producer of Mid-Atlantic Voiceover, LLC. and is the Executive Producer for the Mid-Atlantic Voiceover conference, affectionately known as MAVO, which she launched in 2014.

My guest , Jorge Antonio Renaud is the National Criminal Justice Director for Latino Justice, formerly known as the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, a New York-based national civil rights organization with the goal of changing discriminatory practices via advocacy and litigation.

He has a BS in Psychology from Sam Houston State University; a Master of Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin; was the 2020 Poet in Residence for the Civil Rights Corps; is the 2021 Writer in Residence for the Texas After Violence Project and Policy Analyst for the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition.

After being arrested at the age of 20, thrown into jail, then beaten and sexually assaulted, Jorge began a 32-year odyssey of addiction and robbery, spending 27 years in Texas prisons. Caged for the last time in 1991, Jorge was released in July of 2008. He is serving the rest of his 60-year sentence for robbery on parole.

He is a prison abolitionist with one paramount tenet – no human is disposable.

Hard to believe it was one year ago that I launched my podcast 19Stories: from Fear to Hope. Then again the idea was birthed many years before with a different name but similar concept. It took a pandemic to move beyond my own fear; fear of what others would think, fear of looking like a beginner (I was) and fear that I wouldn’t be consistent with my content (I wasn’t) and yet I launched knowing that hearing people stories was way more important than my fear. I knew that these stories would serve as a sort of “audio journal” of a time that we’d hopefully never see again in our lifetime. My hope moving forward is that I’m still able to share these stories as there are so many left untold. My guest today is a stage and screen actor, writer, and audio drama maven.

Clara’s writing includes essays and plays for stage and audio drama and her stage plays have been shortlisted and recognized nationally and internationally. In 2014, she was honored by the Kentucky Arts Council with the Emerging Artist Award, Playwright and her writing is a regular feature in the audio drama podcast, Night Owl Theatre and she is the producer and host of the “Yoga with Clara” podcast.

She is a grantee of the Kentucky Foundation for Women, working on an audio drama script that explores the experiences of women in mining communities in Kentucky and the United Kingdom.

She can be seen in the films Dark Waters, starring Mark Ruffalo and The Old Man and the Gun alongside Casey Affleck, starring Robert Redford. George Washington III is a voice actor with over 17 years of experience after spending 20+ years in the IT industry. His diverse body of work ranges from radio spots for the Carolina Panthers to national television commercials.

He says his proudest moment was becoming one of the voices of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC.

Music has also been a big part of his life from childhood and he's used his gift in the opera and classical music worlds, most notably with the use of his beautiful bass-baritone as a regular performer with Opera Carolina, the professional opera company of Charlotte, NC and the oldest continuously operating company in the Southeast.

George joins me, however, to share a different narrative as Covid has personally touched his family with the loss of his own father, George Washington, Jr. after losing his mother just one month prior to cancer.

Fayth Koga was born in Chicago, raised in Los Angeles, and a Chicagoan since 1995.

Having worked as a tech consultant, with a focus on Operations and Finance, for the past two decades she left that world after the start-up she was working for was acquired in 2015.
