This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn fly straight into danger with Conqueror's Isle, a thrilling 1949 episode from the legendary Escape series. Based on a story by prolific fantasy and science fiction author Nelson Bond, and adapted for radio by John Meston, this adventure blends survival, fantasy, and science fiction.
The cast features David Ellis in the lead, supported by Bill Johnstone, Theodore Von Eltz, Sam Edwards, and Richard Benedict. Although David Ellis carries the lead, listeners will recognise the unmistakable voice of William Conrad, who delivers Escape's iconic opening invitation and later appears as Frater Dorden.
Mary and Greg discuss the episode's themes, vivid sound effects, taut pacing, and a wonderfully imaginative premise. Conqueror's Isle is pure dystopian escapism. Get ready to shiver!

Forget geopolitics—because Earth is about to be invaded. This week on The Shiver Show, our featured drama is “The Embassy,” a thought-provoking episode from the terrifc Dimension X series (1955).
Based on an original story by pioneering science fiction writer Donald A. Wollheim, and expertly adapted for radio by George Lefferts, The Embassy blends detective mystery with classic 1950s science fiction. What begins as an investigation for a strange client, gradually unfolds into something far more unsettling, as the clues point to an extraordinary threat from beyond our world.
The performances by Joseph Julian and Barry Kroeger help ground the increasingly fantastic premise, delivering believable characters caught in an unbelievable situation.
Mary and Greg also explore how The Embassy reflects the anxieties of the Cold War era - espionage, infiltration, and the fear that enemies might be hiding in plain sight. They tackle one of the episode's most important questions: Would you accept a cup of tea from a sweet little old lady?

His unlikely ally is June, a wisecracking dancehall girl whose quick wit and street smarts may be his only hope of clearing his name before time runs out.
Based on the novel by celebrated crime writer Cornell Woolrich, Deadline at Dawn is a perfect example of noir at its finest: ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances, racing against both the clock and the police. This week on The Shiver Show, Greg and Mary venture into the unsettling world of The Summer People (1975), a chilling episode, written especially for the CBS Radio Mystery Theater by Bob Juhren and narrated by E.G. Marshall and his iconic creaking door (some WD40 would fix that).
When young couple Mike (Tony Roberts) and Jane (Jennifer Harmon) arrive in the quiet town of Grenville, everything seems almost too perfect. The town is small and charming, the residents are unusually friendly, and everyone appears remarkably youthful. But why are visitors only welcome if they're under 25? Why are there no children, and no pets?
Join Greg and Mary as they unravel this slow-burn horror story that feels like a lost episode of The Twilight Zone. Along the way, they explore the tradition of creepy small towns in horror fiction, and debate whether they would pass the stringent Grenville pre-screening process.
Is the explanation supernatural? Scientific? Or something much more sinister? If you love classic radio drama, psychological suspense, and stories that leave just enough mystery for the imagination, The Summer People is an episode you won't want to miss.
Listen now—and remember, if Grenville invites you to stay for dinner, you may want to ask what's on the menu.

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn wind up one of the creepiest clocks in old-time radio history: Hickory, Dickory, Doom. Originally broadcast on CBS Radio Mystery Theater in 1979, and written by Bob Juhren, the story begins innocently enough when a young Pennsylvania couple purchases an antique grandfather clock at an estate sale "for a steal". The clock seems like a bargain—until it starts chiming when it shouldn't, emitting strange cold drafts, and attracting some decidedly unwelcome visitors. Before long, our unsuspecting couple discovers they've brought home something far more sinister than a family heirloom.
The cast includes Tony Roberts, Patricia Elliott, Sam Gray and Joan Shay, while host E. G. Marshall provides his trademark introduction and closing remarks, helping to make CBS Radio Mystery Theater one of radio's most beloved series. The series ultimately produced an astonishing 1,399 original episodes between 1974 and 1982.
Mary and Greg discuss the wonderfully creepy sound design, the terrific cast and the wonderful pace to the writing. So pull up a chair, lend us your ear (or ears) for Hickory Dickory Doom!

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn welcome you to step into one of the most psychologically unsettling stories ever brought to radio: “Gaslight” from Lux Radio Theatre, starring the legendary Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer.
Long before the term became a pop psychology expression, Gaslight explored the terrifying power of manipulation, deception, and psychological control. Set in Victorian London, the story follows a young woman whose charming husband gradually convinces her that she is losing her mind. Strange noises echo through the house. Objects disappear. The gaslights flicker and dim. And every time she questions what’s happening, she’s calmly told it’s all in her imagination.
Bergman is superb as Paula, bringing vulnerability and emotional depth to every scene, while Boyer delivers a chilling performance full of charm, control, and quiet menace.
Mary and Greg talk about how the title itself gave rise to the modern term “gaslighting.” Originally a stage play before becoming an acclaimed film and radio adaptation, Gaslight remains timeless because the only monster in this story is just an ordinary man.

Fedora? Check. Trench coat? Naturally. Martini? Do you need to ask? This week on the Shiver Show, we slip into the sparkling, sophisticated world of After the Thin Man — where murder is serious business, but our sleuths never lose their sense of style or humour.
Based on the writings of Dashiell Hammett, this 1940 Lux Radio Theatre production reunites Hollywood legends William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles: the glamorous married sleuths who turned crime-solving into an art form.
Nick is effortlessly witty, urbane, and permanently amused by the chaos around him, while Nora is sharp, fearless, and very much his equal — perhaps even the brains of the operation.
Produced by the grand and theatrical Cecil B. DeMille, this lavish radio adaptation delivers full orchestration, cinematic sound design, and the crackling energy of live “event radio.”

This week on the Shiver Show, we are doing a deep dive into the classic noir radio drama, Sunset Boulevard. This Lux Radio Theater production is based on the film, which won several academy awards, and ranks as one of the greatest films of all time. M. Marshman Jr.

This week on The Shiver Show, we take you on a wander down the foggy streets of Victorian London with The Lodger (1948) - a chilling episode from the legendary Suspense series.
Set in the working-class district of Whitechapel, fear grips the city as a shadowy killer known only as “The Avenger” stalks the night. Into this atmosphere of dread comes a mysterious new tenant—Mr Sleuth, played (and narrated) by Robert Montgomery. Quiet, intensely religious, and more than a little unsettling, Mr Sleuth arrives with few possessions, a stack of identical suits, and a habit of quoting scripture.
Jeanette Nolan delivers a strong performance as Ellen Bunting, the wary landlady, while Peggy Weber plays her step-daughter Daisy, whose naivety adds to the tension. Lucien Moraweck’s haunting music underscores this dread tale.
Written by Marie Belloc Lowndes, an English author and suffragette, The Lodger is a masterclass in suspense.

There's a storm brewing this week on The Shiver Show, as Mary and Greg brace for the storm, and hunker down in the tense, claustrophobic world of Key Largo. This radio adaption for the Lux Radio Theatre, first broadcast on CBS in 1949, following the 1948 noir film classic.
At the centre is the unforgettable Edward G. Robinson, reprising his role as gangster Johnny Rocco—a man as dangerous as the hurricane bearing down on the Florida Keys.
He’s joined by Claire Trevor, also returning as Gaye Dawn, the tragic, alcohol-soaked torch singer—a performance that won her an Academy Award in the film. Edmond O’Brien steps into the role of reluctant hero Frank McLeod (originally played by Humphrey Bogart).
Mary and Greg explore the story’s fascinating evolution—from Maxwell Anderson’s 1939 Broadway play (written in blank verse!) to its transformation into a tightly wound wartime noir set against the backdrop of a raging hurricane, which seems like a character itself.
With gangsters, guns, and rising tension, Key Largo is a masterclass in atmosphere and character. So batten down the hatches because when the storm hits, it's going to be a bumpy night.

This week with Project Mastodon, we’re travelling back to a time when mastodons roamed and mosquitoes were… frankly, terrifying. This 1956 episode from the brilliant X Minus One series, based on a story by Clifford D. Simak, blends satire, suspense, and big ideas in equal measure.
When a group of entrepreneurs discover a gateway to the distant past, their first instinct isn’t scientific curiosity—it’s opportunity. Why stay in the modern world with all its rules and restrictions when you can head back 50,000 years and start fresh? Their solution: establish a brand-new civilisation in prehistoric times, free from government interference and full of commercial potential.
But while Mastodonia might seem like the perfect escape, the present-day world isn’t quite ready to let it go. What unfolds is a clever and often funny exploration of time travel, capitalism, and control.
As always, X Minus One delivers a high-concept story with real bite. It’s imaginative, thought-provoking, and surprisingly modern in its themes. Step into the past—and see what the future makes of it. And don't forget the bug repellent!

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn cinch up their trench coats once again and step into the shadowy world of wartime espionage with “Five Fingers” from Lux Radio Theatre (1952).
Starring the incomparable James Mason, reprising his film role, this stylish spy drama is based on the real-life story of the infamous spy with the code name Cicero. Mason plays Ulysses Diello, a suave and deeply opportunistic valet working at the British Embassy in Ankara during World War II. By day, he’s the model servant. By night, he’s photographing top-secret documents and selling them to the Germans. Loyalty is negotiable, and everyone—especially Diello—has a price.
Mary and Greg unpack the fascinating true story of Albanian valet Elyesa Bazna, whose daring espionage earned him a fortune… paid in counterfeit money. Not exactly a retirement plan. They also explore the film’s legacy, from its glamorous 1952 cinema release (directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz) and shot in Istanbul.
Expect clipped accents, coded messages, and plenty of intrigue—though perhaps not perfect sound quality this time! Still, Mason’s velvet performance carries the day. Please join us for this terrific spy thriller.

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn bring you The Voice on the Wire, a delicious tale of psychological suspense.
At the centre of the story is Geraldine Reeves, played by Lesley Woods, a lonely widow living on a narrow island near the ruins of her former home. Years earlier, her husband—a composer—died in a tragic fire that destroyed the house.
Night after night she hears something impossible: her late husband’s unfinished musical composition drifting through the darkness, accompanied by the eerie howling of a dog. No one is there—or so it seems. Then one evening the telephone rings, and a mysterious voice calmly informs Geraldine she has just four hours to live.
Written by Robert Sloane, the story plays almost like a radio version of Clue—everyone seems suspicious, everyone denies everything, and someone is clearly lying. Is it supernatural revenge… or something far more calculated?
Tune in and decide for yourself—The Voice on the Wire delivers a double helping of suspense.

Join us this week on The Shiver Show, as Mary and Greg enter a time warp with “Time and Time Again.” This unforgettable episode of X Minus One, aired on the NBC Radio Network (1956), and is based on the 1947 novel by H. Beam Piper.
The story follows Allan Hartley, a 43-year-old soldier wounded during the Siege of Buffalo in World War III. It’s 1975. The world is fractured. Then—without warning—Allan wakes up in 1945… inside his own 13-year-old body.
Armed with knowledge of Hiroshima, the course of World War II, Allan faces an extraordinary moral puzzle: Can he change the future? Should he? Or does time resist interference?
Author H. Beam Piper was fascinated by time distortion and alternate histories, themes he explored across numerous short stories and novels. Mary and Greg explore the episode’s haunting central question: If you could return to your 13-year-old self for one hour… what would you do?

This week on The Shiver Show, we bring you deceit and deadly intentions with “A Blueprint for Murder” from Lux Radio Theatre (1954), adapted just one year after the successful 1953 film, directed by Andrew L. Stone, and starring Joseph Cotten and Jean Peters.
This golden era radio episode features Dan Dailey as Cam, and Dorothy McGuire as Lynn, the dreaded stepmother with secrets to spare. McGuire is terrific here, proving she can go dark, despite Hollywood often casting her as the “nice girl.” The supporting cast is terrific too, with Barney Phillips as Captain Detective Pringle, Jack Kruschen as Lieutenant Cole, and William Conrad as the district attorney.

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn do the time warp with “The Thirty-Second of December” (1958), a clever and unsettling episode from the legendary Suspense series.
Starring Frank Lovejoy as Joe, the story leans heavily on Lovejoy’s everyman intensity. Drowning in gambling debt, Joe makes a disastrous choice: he pawns his fiancée Molly’s engagement ring… then impulsively spends the money on a strange watch from a deeply unsettling pawnshop owner, played to perfection by Barney Phillips.
Things go rapidly downhill when Joe discovers the watch can control time—and decides to use it to rob a bank. The robbery succeeds. The debt is gone. But Molly is gone and Joe still hasn't learned his lesson at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve.
Mary and Greg unpack the episode’s dark irony, its cautionary take on shortcuts and second chances. A morality tale with a supernatural sting— The 32nd of December is quietly cruel.

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn return to the streets of New York with “The Andrew Jenkins Case” (1949), a taut episode from Broadway Is My Beat, originally broadcast on CBS.
Anthony Ross stars as Detective Danny Clover, offering a more mature, seasoned take on the character—world-weary, reflective, and quietly authoritative. It’s a fine performance that suits the darker emotional undercurrent of the case. Ross is joined by Charlotte Holland as Grace and Jean Carson as Sally, whose flirty exchanges with Danny add warmth and levity in this bleak world.
Mary talks about the superb sound design in this episode - the rich ambient sound of the auctioneer’s room, or the visceral fight scene. Greg does the numbers on the 2025 value of the stash and the pawned watch!
As Detective Danny Clover reminds us, “It’s Broadway – it’s a merry-go-round, where you can’t tell if the guy in front of you is thinking about a milkshake or murder.”

At the centre of it all is Detective Danny Clover, played by Larry Thor, whose performance perfectly captures the exhaustion and quiet decency of a man who’s seen too much.
The atmosphere is pure noir, helped along by the moody score from Alexander Courage, and the soundscape of David Light, a true legend of radio sound design.
Mary and Greg unpack the writing, performances, and craftsmanship that make Broadway Is My Beat such an enduring classic. If you like your crime drama tough and soaked in melancholy, “The Floyd Decker Murder Case” is one you won’t want to miss.

This week on The Shiver Show, hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn invite you into a quiet English home where manners are impeccable, secrets are deadly… and the rain simply will not stop. Our featured episode is Wet Saturday, a deliciously twisted classic in which the sinister wit of John Collier meets the suspenseful genius of old-time radio at its finest.
Set in a rain-drenched English town, the story begins with a sudden, shocking murder. Charles Laughton stars as the calculating patriarch determined to protect his family at any cost.
Originally aired on December 16, 1943, on the legendary Suspense series, Wet Saturday is a dark comedy. Adapted from Collier’s 1938 short story, the episode crackles with dry British humour and moral ambiguity.
Mary and Greg talk about Laughton’s masterful performance, Collier's intriguing story, and whether croquet is a dangerous game. So settle in, listen closely, and remember—on a wet Saturday, even the most respectable household can become very dangerous indeed.

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn shine a flickering torch into the darkness with a chilling gem from classic radio horror: “The Shadow People” (1953), from the cult-favourite series The Hall of Fantasy.
When a young woman becomes convinced she’s being stalked by the same supernatural entities responsible for her father’s mysterious death, fear turns to desperation. Shadows move where they shouldn’t. Shapes linger just beyond the edge of vision. Unsure whether she’s facing something otherworldly or losing her grip on reality, she turns to a paranormal expert for answers. What follows is a deeply unsettling descent into unseen menace, where the darkness itself seems alive.
Mary and Greg unpack what makes this episode so effective, starting with the terrific sound design. Footsteps, whispers, and encroaching silence are used with precision, proving once again that radio horror doesn’t need visuals to crawl under your skin. The Hall of Fantasy, produced and directed by Richard Thorne, ran from 1952 to 1953 and built a loyal following for its moody adaptations of horror, fantasy, and suspense. Though cast credits were often sparse or unbilled, the series featured a rotating troupe of seasoned radio actors who delivered consistently high-quality performances across its short but memorable run.
If you enjoy vintage horror that whispers rather than screams—and leaves you glancing nervously at the corners of the room—this episode is for you. Tune in… because The Shadow People truly deliver the shivers.

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn invite you to go undercover with a wonderfully unsettling X-Minus One classic, Doctor Grimshaw’s Sanitorium (1955).
Written by Fletcher Pratt in 1934, and adapted for radio by George Lefferts, this tale is in the style of a found manuscript, penned by private detective John Doherty, a man who is now missing.
As the story unfolds, Doherty suspects that something sinister is going on behind the locked doors of Doctor Grimshaw’s exclusive sanitorium. Patients disappear. Deaths are whispered away. And the treatments? Let’s just say they’re… experimental.
Like any sensible hard-boiled detective, Doherty does the only logical thing—he checks himself into the sanitorium under the pretext of needing treatment for his alcoholism. It’s a decision that proves both brave and catastrophically unwise. Once inside, reality begins to warp, paranoia sets in, and all hell breaks loose.
What makes “Doctor Grimshaw’s Sanitorium” such a standout is its fearless genre-blending. It’s science fiction, horror, and noir crime all rolled into one. Mary and Greg explore what makes this old time radio drama so creepy, and why it still sends shivers.
So slip into a drafty hospital gown (yes, those ones that open up at the back), and prepare to be part of the mad experiment that is Doctor Grimshaw’s Sanitorium.

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn head out into space with a science-fiction classic, “The Green Hills of Earth,” from the legendary radio series Dimension X.
Written by Robert A. Heinlein, one of the founding giants of modern science fiction, this story showcases a softer, more lyrical side of his work. Heinlein is best known for shaping the genre with novels such as Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and Starship Troopers, but “The Green Hills of Earth” reminds us that he could also write with deep humanity, wit, and aching nostalgia.
The Dimension X adaptation brings Heinlein’s tale to life with a strong ensemble cast. Set in a future where humanity routinely travels the solar system, the story centres on Rhysling, a blind, space bard, who longs to return to Earth.
At its heart, this is a story about exile, belonging, and the quiet grief of loving a world you may never see again. Heinlein’s famous poem, beginning with the line “We pray for one last landing on the globe that gave us birth,” resonates powerfully.
Mary and Greg explore how “The Green Hills of Earth” stands apart from harder, gadget-driven sci-fi, offering instead a meditation on home, sacrifice, and growing old. You may not like the folksy music, but you might find that this is a moving tale. Tune in and brings some tissues.

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn take you deep into the murky shadows and mean streets of 1940s Los Angeles, where danger leans in a darkened doorway. Our featured tale is a gripping slice of classic noir: Raymond Chandler’s “The Ebony Link," from The Adventures of Philip Marlowe series (1949).
Chandler’s writing is at its sharpest here, weaving a tale thick with deception, misdirection, and characters you wouldn’t trust to water your plants. There’s a sketchy manicurist, a slippery chauffeur, a trophy wife, a mysterious artist, and a rich old man with more money than sense.
At the center of this web is Philip Marlowe, brought to life by the incomparable Gerald Mohr, who played Marlowe in 114 of the series’ 119 episodes. Mohr was legendary for a reason—charismatic, smooth, and packed with riz. In 1949 he was named “Best Male Actor on Radio” by Radio and Television Life magazine.
Host Greg Flynn turns into a gushing fanboy when Raymond Chandler's on the Shiver Show and our latest episode is no exception. So, if you like your crime served smoky and very noir, settle in. “The Ebony Link” does not disappoint.

The Shiver Show plunges headlong into one of the Suspense radio series’ most delicious gothic tales: Fugue in C Minor (1944), starring the incomparable Vincent Price and the extraordinary Ida Lupino.
Price plays the eccentric Theodore Evans, a rich widower who invites Ida Lupino’s Amanda Peabody into his life. Add into the mix Theodore's creepy children, and the untimely death of Theodore's first wife, and you’ve got the ingredients for vintage horror.
Mary and Greg talk about Ida Lupino's groundbreaking career, Lucille Fletcher's terrific radio play, and whether an unhinged Vincent Price is too much (or just the right amount). One thing is for certain, you won't want to miss Price when he pulls out all the stops!

This week on The Shiver Show, co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn take you on a journey to the Red Planet—a mission wrapped in nostalgia and dread. Our featured old time radio drama is the 1951 Dimension Xadaptation of “Mars Is Heaven!”, an award-winning tale from the golden age of radio drama.
Written by Ray Bradbury and published in Planet Stories (1948), the tale later became part of The Martian Chronicles under the title “The Third Expedition.” It has since earned a place in the Science Fiction Hall of Fame (1929–1964) for its chilling reminder of the fallibility of man.
The Dimension X radio version—adapted for broadcast by scriptwriter Ernest Kinoy—first aired in January 1951. The show features an ensemble cast including Wendell Holmes, Peter Capell, Joseph Julian, Bill Zuckert, Bill Lipton, Bill Griffis, Ethel Everette, and Charme Allen.
Set in the year 1986, the story follows a crew of Earth astronauts who land on Mars expecting desolation, and instead find a small Midwestern American town from the 1920's. Stranger still, the inhabitants are their long-dead relatives and friends. Is it heaven, or something more sinister?
Join Mary and Greg as they wriggle into their spacesuits, and set out to explore this eerie classic.

Return to Manderley this week on The Shiver Show, as we present the 1950 Lux Radio Theatre production of Rebecca—the only time Hollywood’s golden couple Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier performed on radio together. Recorded before a live audience this broadcast brings Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 gothic masterpiece to life.
Olivier is prickly and brooding as Maxim. Leigh’s unnamed narrator is meek, sweet, and utterly alone in this haunting tale. Strong supporting turns from Betty Blythe as a chilling Mrs Danvers and John Dodson as Jack Favell keep the drama simmering.
We talk about the real-life drama of Vivien Leigh’s health struggles, and the cracks forming in her marriage to Olivier. Their love—complicated as it was—still glows through this performance. We also explore the little known controversy surrounding the similarities between Rebecca and the earlier Brazilian novel, The Successor, by Carolina Nabuco.

All aboard for a journey where chance, obsession, and murder share the same carriage. This week on The Shiver Show, we feature the Lux Radio Theater adaptation of Strangers on a Train(December 1951) — a chilling broadcast based on Patricia Highsmith’s acclaimed novel of the same name.
Just months earlier, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 film had dazzled audiences with its sleek black-and-white cinematography and psychological menace. The radio dramatization captures that same creeping dread through the power of voice, sound, and imagination.
Ray Milland stars as Guy Haines, a well-mannered tennis professional whose chance meeting with the unsettling Bruno Antony — played superbly by Frank Lovejoy — changes everything. With unnerving charm, Bruno proposes the unthinkable: a “murder swap” — his father for Guy’s unfaithful wife. No motive. No connection. No trace.
After the drama, Mary and Greg discuss the challenges of performing before a live audience, the stellar cast, and that master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Strangers on a Trainproves that stranger danger is real.

Clutch your rosary and uncork your vial of holy water! This week on The Shiver Show, we unleash one of the creepiest episodes of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater: “Possessed by the Devil” (1974). In Possessed by the Devil, an injured man is wheeled into a hospital ward, and placed beside a dying patient - that’s when all hell breaks loose. Donald Buka stars as Mike, the man who falls under spell of Satan - or is it Beelzebub? Greg, our Shiver Show theologian, is still pondering this important question.
Mary and Greg discuss the off-the-leash acting, whether the cat was feline or human, and how to make holy water. This is perfect Hallowe'en listening! Join us!

First Contact — Dimension X (1951)
Before Star Trek imagined the Prime Directive, Murray Leinster dreamed up a story about the most dangerous meeting in the universe — the first contact between two intelligent species. His 1945 novelette, later honored with a Retro Hugo in 1996, introduced the idea of a universal translator — decades before science fiction made it standard issue.
In this Dimension X adaptation by Howard Rodman, two ships — one human, one alien — encounter each other in deep space. Neither can turn back without risking the safety of its home world, and neither can advance without trust. Should they trade, communicate… or destroy each other? As tensions rise, the Earthlings grapple with curiosity, fear, protocol, and the thin line between self-defense and a senseless preemptive strike.
Co-host Greg and Mary talk about the thought-provoking themes in First Contact, and contrast the radio drama with the novella. What do you think happens at the end of this enigmatic sci-fi thriller?

This week on The Shiver Show, we take you to the world of insurance fraud, shady dealings, and one very slippery string of pearls with The Kranesburg Matter, a classic tale from Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. First broadcast in 1949, this episode features the inimitable Bob Bailey in his signature role as “the man with the action-packed expense account.”
Johnny Dollar, hardboiled but never humorless, is sent to investigate a stolen pearl necklace that carries a hefty insurance claim. What looks like a simple case of theft quickly twists into something darker and more devious. At the center of it all are a rogues’ gallery of characters: the sly Smiley Pro, the calculating Finneus Krane, and the enigmatic Melba Krane. Each one has something to hide, and Johnny has to decide who’s telling the truth and who’s just stringing him along.
Greg and Mary talk about the witty and crisp writing of Les Crutchfield that made Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar such a standout in the field of old time radio dramas. Add to this some terrific foley work—footsteps, smokey bars, doors slamming, phones ringing—and a moody music score, and you’ve got a perfect slice of vintage crime noir.
While The Kranesburg Matter was originally broadcast in six, fifteen-minute episodes, we have remastered the series and brought it to you in two parts. So make sure you join us next week for the second part of The Kranesburg Matter. But when that final order is placed, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary customer.
That sinister patron is brought to life by Elliott Lewis, a gifted performer who goes on to become one of the most influential figures in radio as an actor, producer, director, and writer. Lewis lends his voice a chilling calm, perfectly balancing Garland’s vulnerability and tension.

Lend us your ears and listen to this Old Time Radio horror classic, Death Robbery. Originally broadcast on July 16, 1947, this unforgettable tale comes to the Shiver Show from the Lights Out radio series.
Written and directed by Arch Oboler, and adapted for the airwaves with his signature flair for the macabre, Death Robbery explores the dangerous intersection of love, grief, and scientific ambition. When a scientist dares to tamper with the boundary between life and death, he unleashes terrifying consequences. At its core, the story is not just about reanimation and the human soul, but about the hubris of man—and the horror that waits when we push too far.
The broadcast features the commanding presence of Boris Karloff, whose resonant voice transforms this already haunting script into a chilling drama. Supporting Karloff’s performance is the eerie and evocative music score by Gordon Jenkins.
Mary and Greg talk about Karloff's interesting career and why Death Robbery still resonates today.

Long before Silicon Valley, TikTok, or the age of algorithms, a pulp sci-fi writer named Murray Leinster imagined a world where machines got a little too smart. In 1947 he wrote A Logic Named Joe—a story so ahead of its time it feels uncanny even now. Just a few years later, the tale came crackling to life on the radio anthology Dimension X in 1950.
In this episode of The Shiver Show, Mary and Greg dive into this eerie slice of old-time radio, talking about the sharp performances by Joseph Julian and Roger DeKoven, the inventive sound design, and yes—that delightfully kooky theme music. Based on Chandler’s celebrated 1943 novel, The Lady in the Lake, this old time radio classic takes listeners into a world of deception, murder, and intrigue. This week on The Shiver Show, Mary and Greg dive into a shadowy world of suspense and betrayal with a chilling feature episode: The Big Clock. Adapted from the classic thriller novel by Kenneth Fearing, this noir gem delivers a tightly wound tale of murder, manipulation—and a man hunting himself.
Ray Milland stars as George Stroud, a crime reporter caught in a Kafkaesque nightmare when he’s ordered to solve a murder that might just point back to him. With a ticking corporate clock looming over every move, and a web of clues tightening by the hour, the suspense is as relentless as it is elegant. Maureen O’Sullivan brings quiet depth as Stroud’s wife, while the commanding William Conrad adds a note of menace as media mogul and sleazebag, Janouth.
Mary and Greg break it all down with their signature mix of insight and dry humor—marveling at the film’s clever twists, the sharp dialogue, and the absolutely fabulous foley, and an intense debate on whether crème de menthe deserves a place in any adult’s liquor cabinet. (Spoiler: one of them has very strong opinions.)

This week on The Shiver Show, we plunge into one of the most haunting tales of duality ever written:Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Join hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn as they guide you through the chilling 1974 CBS Radio Mystery Theater adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella—a radio drama that explores the terrifying conflict between good and evil in each human soul.
This gripping episode was penned for radio by George Lowther, a prolific writer and director who masterfully condensed Stevenson’s psychological thriller into a taut, atmospheric production that still resonates today. The story unfolds through the signature CBS Radio Mystery Theater format: brooding narration, moody orchestration, and immersive sound effects that echo the shadowy streets of Victorian London.
At the heart of this production is a powerhouse performance by Kevin McCarthy as the conflicted Dr. Henry Jekyll and his monstrous alter ego, Edward Hyde. McCarthy’s dynamic range—moving seamlessly from refined intellect to feral rage—anchors the drama and elevates the horror.
Mary and Greg delve deep into what apparently inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write this story, and the themes of identity, repression, and moral ambiguity. In 1938, on Halloween night, the sensational radio broadcast of War of the Worlds caused listeners to tremble and panic. Orson Welles, the mastermind behind this electrifying adaptation of the H.G. Wells timeless classic, sent shockwaves through America.
To many radio listeners, this gripping radio play sounded like a real news story about a Martian invasion - starting with a space ship landing in New Jersey, and followed by a ground invasion making its way to New York city. The play used immersive sound effects, such as terrified bystanders, a skittish news reporter, alien weaponry, and the destruction of buildings and infrastructure.
The reaction to War of the Worlds was as legendary as the broadcast itself. The public's response bordered on hysteria - the telephone network was swamped with calls, and the police surrounded and entered the CBS Radio Network in an attempt to stop the broadcast. Once it was clear that the story was just a story, the event sparked a national conversation about media responsibility and the power of storytelling. Orson Welles, initially interrogated by the police, was later hailed as a genius for his exceptional voice acting work.
Listen to what Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn discovered in their research into the story, the controversy, the actors and what many consider the first instance of 'fake news.'

The Tell-Tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe was written in 1843, and is considered one of the greatest works of Gothic fiction. Born in 1809 to two actor parents, Poe was pretty much guaranteed a life of poverty and hardship. His actor father abandoned the family when he was young and then his mother died soon after.
He was fostered to the Allens, a wealthy family living in West Virginia. Poe’s foster father alternated between spoiling young Poe and disciplining him harshly. Allen never formally adopted Poe and when Poe became a young man, Allen disowned him entirely.
Do these 'Daddy issues' make their way into the story of the Tell-Tale Heart? You be the judge. Note too that relationship between the story’s narrator and the old man is never clarified.

Donovan's Brain is so horrible, so bloodcurdling, that you might need therapy after you listen to it. The story comes from the mind of Curt Siodmak, whose 1942 science fiction novel of the same name was immediately made into the 1944 radio drama that you are about to hear. It has a stellar performance by Orson Welles as the evil Doctor Patrick Cory (and Donovan).

Sorry Wrong Number is another superb audio drama written by Lucille Fletcher. It first aired on the Suspense Radio Program in 1943. Orson Welles called Sorry Wrong Number, "the single greatest radio script ever written." The story idea came to Fletcher while she was in a grocery story on Manhattan’s lower east side. There, she noticed a well-dressed woman with an obnoxious manner in the line-up. This unpleasant woman was the inspiration for the character of Mrs Stevenson. What dark fantasies was Lucille Fletcher having in that grocery story line-up, while she waited to pay for her bread, milk and a dozen eggs?

If you are a woman of a certain age like me, you may have spent a lot of time in high heels. Now, you might look down at your feet and think to yourself, “How did we come to this?” Bunions, hammer toes, callouses, tight Achilles tendons, and pains everywhere. You’re not alone. Thirty-five per cent (35%) of women over the age of sixty-five have bunions, which is twice the rate of men. But do we just have to accept that our feet are falling apart?

Perimenopause is a tough time and many women find the physical and mental changes that occur quite overwhelming. And it’s not just hot flushes. Lack of sleep, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, mood swings and brain fog can all be part of the new status quo. But if you are a working woman, you still must 'rock up' to work and look and act like nothing is happening.
The workplace typically doesn’t care what’s happening to you…or do they? Mentally Well Workplaces is an organisation with the goal of helping employers learn how to support the mental health of their workers. Cofounder and Director, Tina Winchester, and team have a mission to help organisations support their female employees and their mental health as they go through this challenging time.

If you’re like me you might look down at your feet on occasion and think to yourself, how did we come to this? My feet are not pretty. Years of wearing high heels and running about 1700 kilometres a year have taken their toll. I have bunions, hammer toes, callouses and a sensitive spot on the ball of one foot. And I know I’m not alone. In the US, 35% of women over the age of 65 have bunions, about twice the rate of men.
But do we just have to accept that our feet are falling apart? No we do not. In this episode I talk with Andrew Wynd, a sports physiotherapy and guru in the topic of foot and ankle health. Most of us can probably remember the first time we menstruated. And although a woman will menstruate every month for approximately forty years of her life, no two women will have the same experience.
Many midlife women find as menopause comes into the picture, that things can get complicated. Today we catch up with Dr Talat Uppal. Dr Uppal is a Obstetrician/gynaecologist and Director of Women’s Health Road, a holistic health practice for women in Sydney, Australia. She has some very simple advice to help us navigate menstruation in midlife and beyond.
It’s good to know that we don’t have to suffer with irregular or heavy bleeding as long as you put yourself at the top of the list and take care of yourself
Remember, love yourself, love others, tell them often. Until next time.

We know from statistics that only two in five women over 50 are getting enough exercise. That means three in five women of a certain age (or 60%) are not getting the minimum recommended amount. Think about that for a minute.
How much is enough? Women and men over 50 should be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week (e.g. walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise (e.g. jogging or running).
The exercise you do now pays you forward, improving your quality of life later on. It could make the difference as to whether you can climb stairs, carry groceries, open a tomato sauce jar, or enjoy a walking tour of Paris.

What would you say if someone asked you to pose nude for a photo exhibition? One that would be seen by thousands of people?
Whatever your answer, it’s time you met Ponch Hawkes - a photographic artist, whose works have been featured in galleries throughout Australia and beyond. Her photographic exhibit, 500 Strong, celebrates the beauty and truth of being a women of a certain age.
Older women often speak of feeling invisible, of hitting middle age and finding their presence diminished. Even in art, representations of women beyond a certain age are limited. Hawkes feels that lack of documentation has a negative effect, preventing women from having a comfortable, and joyous relationship with their bodies.
Hawkes' work, 500 Strong, is a visual tribute to the beauty and truth of being a woman of a certain age, and her story about its creation is surprising.

Women over 50 have always done it tough in the job market. We are underemployed, we get paid less and we generally occupy less senior roles within organisations. The COVID19 pandemic has just thrown this problem into much sharper relief. We women experienced more job loss and underemployment in 2020 and 2021, and are now having great difficulty getting work, despite signs of economic recovery.
In today’s episode, we look at Maturious, an organisation that is challenging the status quo by creating opportunities for mature workers and employers. Their goal? To reverse the age gap in the workplace.

SisterStay is a UK-based organisation with a vision to make the world a safe and friendly place for travelling women over 50.
SisterStay is bucking the trend set by AirBnB of the superhost, the perfectly styled home, the somewhat dishonest reciprocal rating system, the digital check-in system and, let's face it, properties that are increasingly expensive.
How does SisterStay do it? By putting the community first and – what’s really exciting – catering to women over 50. SisterStay has returned to the original premise of AirBnB, which is the humble notion of sharing space in your home with travellers for a modest fee. SisterStay seeks to rekindle the delightful connection between host and guest and create a global family of travelling, adventurous 'sisters'.

It’s time to talk about money. When it comes to finances, many women face an uphill battle all their lives.
Women are paid about 16% less than men and many women take time out of work to raise families. The average career break for women with children is six years. When women return to work, it is often part-time. With lower pay, child care career breaks, and more part-time work, women retire with about half the retirement savings of men.
In this episode, Caz, a recently widowed woman in her late 50s, tells us what she did to get control of her finances. Joining the discussion is Financial Planner, John Walker of Optimal Wealth Solutions. John outlines the work he did with Caz to make money her superpower.
