Postpartum Contraception Dr Helen Lawal   Your baby is in your arms and the amazing, manic whirlwind that is motherhood has begun. It is unlikely that sex is the top of your priority list straight away, or for a little while until it is and then begins a rush to seek contraception. You are extremely fertile post baby, and most parents try to have a little gap between children, a period of recovery is also often recommended for women as birth is a massive ordeal on your body. But what contraception can you start post birth? When can you start it? What is safe with breastfeeding? and what side effects of contraception can we expect?

Honestly, I was there once too- heard the term Hypnobirthing and imagined all the marbles, crystal balls and birthing in the forest- all very hippy style and niche. Now if that’s your thing then of course that’s cool too but actually Hypnobirthing is absolutely for you if you are expecting a baby regardless of how you may plan to birth, and it need not be hippy at all.

On this week’s episode I am joined by fellow Midwife, mum of 4, and founder of @thebumptobabychapter Beth Kitt. Beth often speaks about the way women will always remember the day they give birth and the way it makes them feel and this is so, very true. Birth is not something we should leave to chance it is simply much too important. The truth is antenatal education is unregulated and you can train to become an antenatal educator through a short course of around 3 days in length. I will leave you to ponder on how good you feel that is…   You may have realised through this episode quality birth preparation is something I am immensely passionate about. Unfortunately, on the internet everyone seems to feel they are an expert in this area and there are more myths, misconceptions, and unreliable resources than I can bare to count. This is why I am happy to be able to sign post you to www.aptaclub.co.uk/midwifepip for free, accessible information written by experts and backed up by evidence.   For more on this topic check out Pip’s Blog: https://www.midwifepip.com/blog

As a mum, there is nothing I wouldn’t do to protect my little boy and I was honestly shocked to hear statistics like at least 1 child under 5 years dies from an accident of which over 75% take place in the home. Our homes should be safe places for our little ones to explore and thrive and so I am super excited by this week’s guest as we can learn how to keep our little ones as safe as they can be at home.   This week I am joined by Kate Ball, founder of Mini First Aid @minifirstaid, Kate is a paediatric first aid specialist, mum of 6 (including 2 sets of twins!!) and featured on BBC 1 Dragons' Den in 2021 securing investment from Sara Davies MBE.   On this episode Kate shares some very important information on the safety regulation of products and the numbers to look for are below: BS EN71 Series: safety requirements for toys BS EN 1930:2011: safety barriers (stair gates) BS EN 16654:2015: consumer fitted finger protection devices for doors    Whilst we are talking about keeping our homes safe, I think it is important we think about how we can make them a nurturing environment too. Encouraging communication, language and imagination in our children is beautiful to watch and their early years provide such a powerful time for growth and opportunity. Oh motherhood, you think you are prepared and then it actually happens and wow it is a rollercoaster. There seems to be a taboo around sharing how we actually feel during motherhood, and it is important we normalise the spectrum of emotions we may feel as we navigate our new roles as mothers.   This week I am joined by Anna Mathur @annamathur where we discuss the juggle of mum life amongst guilt, loneliness and overwhelm to name a few emotions.   I highly recommend Anna’s new book to help you find your calm in the chaos. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Book-Calm-New-Mums/dp/0241559812/ref=asc_df_0241559812/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=570430330025&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2248060045060247048&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045515&hvtargid=pla-1640985337587&psc=1&th=1&psc=1   I want to also share with you some important evidence.- scientists have been looking into the impact of maternal stress on a developing baby in pregnancy and have found that babies are impacted by stress, anxiety, and depression in their mothers. Fascinatingly it has been found to impact a baby’s immune response and linked to development of conditions such as Asthma. I am sure it is not the first time you have heard of tongue tie, a condition effecting around 5% of newborns and commonly causing great infant feeding difficulties. So how can we get a step ahead to prevent tongue tie from causing us additional difficulty in the early days, weeks and months of newborn life. Lisa is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in private practice. Her lactation practice is concentrated on the issue of Tongue tie but she is also educated in functional medicine and works with those struggling with hormonal, thyroid, milk supply, or fertility concerns. Lisa worked for 28 years at Staten Island University Hospital before establishing her private practice in 2015. At the Hospital, she co-founded and coordinated the Breastfeeding Initiative and worked in collaboration with the NYC Department of Health for eight years on efforts toward achieving the “Baby Friendly” designation. Currently, Lisa manages the Tongue Tie Experts brand on Facebook and Instagram, provides education to parents and professionals, through social media outreach and courses, and produces the Tongue Tie Experts Podcast. She loves to lecture and educate the world on the importance of breastfeeding for the health of infants and the developing airway. The first trimester is arguably the most physically and psychologically challenging trimester in pregnancy yet it is shrouded in secrecy leaving women feeling alone and isolated in their anxiety and symptoms. Worst of all, it means that women are left dealing with the grief of miscarriage behind closed doors. This week we are talking about a topic I am super passionate about- why is it we are so secretive about the first trimester and is this right? Pelvic organ prolapse, a condition that is more common in women, especially postpartum women than many realise and something that is often a source of embarrassment, shame or fear for those suffering. So on this episode I am really keen to shine a light on pelvic organ prolapse, help anyone listening who has been effected know they are not alone and that there is much that can be done to support you. I am so excited to welcome a woman doing such incredible work to raise the lid on pelvic organ prolapse and generally ditch the taboo surrounding pelvic health dysfunction post childbirth. Breastfeeding, despite being one of the most natural things in the world, is often far from easy. I would go as far to say those first few weeks are one of the most challenging things I have done. Going into the early days of breastfeeding with realistic expectations and an honest understanding of what is normal, what isn’t and ways to troubleshoot these can make a huge difference and the best time to educate yourself and prevent common issues such as poor latch or supply issues is in pregnancy itself. Today I am joined by a fellow mum and breastfeeding cheerleader, Alice Lucken @babyetaluk. Alice is a lactation consultant and postnatal practitioner dedicating her work to supporting families in their breastfeeding journeys and my goodness one thing we do know is there needs to be a heck of a lot more support! My Birth Story

with Midwife Pip

Honestly, I never intended on sharing my birth story.

It is such a personal, precious journey but I have experienced first-hand the power of reading and reflecting on birth stories during my own pregnancy. There are so many ‘horror’ style stories to be read, a bit like restaurant reviews- everyone leaves a bad review, but we often forget to celebrate the good ones. As a midwife, working predominantly in a high risk setting for the past few years I have witnessed many types of birth, many obstetric emergencies and many of what could be featured in the ‘scary birth story’ column. So, therefore I have chosen to share mine with you, my arm has been twisted and fitting with my ethos of supporting women to be excited for birth, not scared I feel it is important I share this.

17th September 2021- the most amazing and empowering day of my life…

Becoming and being a parent is tough, perhaps the most challenging thing we will ever do as a woman. Don’t get me wrong I love being a mum but the psychological shift is huge, your life and priorities are literally turned upside down overnight. Our emotional wellbeing is more fragile and important than ever but is often right down the priority list.

This week Sophie Burch aka The Mamma Coach @themamacoach is here to share with us why and how we should and must change this. Sophie is on a mission to put mental and emotional wellbeing more on the map in pregnancy, birth and parenting. She has 16 years as a mother to 4 boys (including twins), as a perinatal therapist and coach, and a birth trauma and PND survivor. Her experience has shaped who she is and awakened her to a life of compassion and deep empathy for everyone from pre-conception through parenting to menopause. Her approach is simple: to allow people to feel held and heard, safe and worthy of love and self acceptance.. Sophie believes that our strength comes from self compassion, kindness and knowledge, which is her ethos. Her focus for 2022 is “connection” and she intends to connect with and hold space for as many people as possible.

2020 saw her launch her Book, Beyond Birth: A Mindful Guide for Early Parenting, which is an integration of all she knows will help people have a more balanced, positive experience as they transition from pregnancy to parenting. The guide is available as a published book on Amazon, an ebook & audiobook so it really is a must read that is accessible to all and is linked below:

Dr. Ivana Poku bravely shares some of her experience with postnatal depression and pregnancy following previous postnatal depression.

In the UK it is estimated that 1 in 4 women experience postnatal depression and it is a subject we really need to discuss more. So, a heartfelt thank you to Ivana, a mum of 3 boys (including twins), postnatal depression survivor, blogger, motivational speaker, and author of Motherhood - The Unspoken for helping raise so much awareness.

Originally from Slovakia, Ivana moved to England at the age of 29. After giving birth to her twin boys, she suffered major postnatal depression. But sadly, she soon understood she was not the only one struggling. Even if it doesn't go as far as depression, becoming a mother is nothing like we had expected and without relevant information and support, this can easily lead to feelings of failure and inadequacy.

After she pulled through postnatal depression, Ivana set up Mumsjourney and has been on the mission to create a world where new mums don't suffer in silence ever since.

Reflux must be up there with one of the most challenging but common conditions new parents and babies face. Seeing your little one uncomfortable and upset is heart breaking so I am excited to bring you this episode packed with expert information and guidance to cut through the confusion and help you navigate this tough time.

Áine Homer, the founder of The Baby Reflux Lady, is joining me today to answer your questions around reflux. Following her own experience in mothering two babies with infant reflux, Áine was inspired to develop a way to support other parents and equip them with the knowledge needed to help their baby. After two babies with reflux, CMPA and multiple other food intolerances and allergies between them, and three years of postnatal depression to boot, Áine knew she had to do something to provide the support that just wasn’t there when she needed it, and thus the Baby Reflux Lady was born! Despite what the doctors say, reflux is not normal, and parents don’t have to wait for babies to grow out of it.

To find out more about Áine’s incredible work all her details are linked in the episode description:

We have all heard of hormones have a huge impact on our bodies during pregnancy, from enabling a conception, maintaining a healthy pregnancy and triggering labour they are a fairly major part of any woman’s pregnancy journey. On this week’s episode I am going to be picking the brains of Lisa Falco. Lisa is a ground-breaking FemTech engineer, she was the Head of Data at one of the biggest FemTech companies in the world - Ava Women - and has spent her career developing algorithms to decipher the menstrual cycle and help women get pregnant faster.

Being a parent is a responsibility like no other, it is to have your heart walking around outside your body and your natural parental instincts are to protect your little one from any harm. So, have you considered ensuring you have the essential choking and first aid skills to keep your little one safe. Choking is one of those things we all hope we never have to deal with, but the reality is it does happen to some babies and children and therefore equipping yourself with the skills to deal with it could quite literally save your child’s life.

Todays guest is Sammy Davies, who has been empowering parents by teaching them life- saving skills for the past five years. Before having children herself, she worked in a bustling, high acuity hospital in Melbourne, Australia as a Registered Nurse. After completing her Masters in Nursing she realised she had a second passion- teaching. Becoming a Nurse Educator allowed her to share her skills, and teach student nurses, nurses and doctors at the frontline.

Soon after becoming a parent herself (and making the move to the UK), she realised that her loved ones were not equipped with the skills that they needed to care for her children in case of a medical emergency. Sharing these life- saving skills with the people around her became her focus, and she went on to start her own businesses teaching parents friendly first aid. Over the years she has helped hundreds of parents and grandparents to know what to do if an accident did occur to their little ones.

Sammy offers Baby & Child First Aid sessions, and has developed an online course devoted to all things choking, follow Sammy on Instagram @happyheartsfirstaid and check out her life-saving courses : www.happyheartsfirstaid.com

Infant feeding is one of the first things on a new parents mind - it is such a fundamental part of the fourth trimester. Whether you choose to breastfeed, combination feed or formula feed you and your baby are learning a whole new skill that can take a little time and patience to get to grips with. Knowing what to expect, how to work out if your feeding journey is going well and common conditions to keep an eye out for such as jaundice can make you feel more confident and prepared as you navigate the early weeks with your little one.

On this weeks episode I am joined by Dr Shruti Nathwani, Dr Shruti is a NHS Paediatrician and host of the platform @thechildrensmedic medic. Knowing there is a gap in knowledge and support parents receive upon arrival of their newborn, she set out to try and inform parents with evidence-based information and tips.

"It was when I had my own son that I realised there were so many questions as a new parent and not enough support to go around." She covers topics such as reflux, newborn stool, eczema, developmental milestones and many more on both her Instagram page and website www.thechildrensmedic.com

I think the most commonly searched words for new parents are… how can I get my baby to sleep. The sleep disturbances and deprivation of being a new parent are tough as I know all too well since becoming a mum myself n 2021.

If babies came with a sleep manual that would be great, but they just don’t, so we have got to figure out how to support these beautiful little joyous sleep thieves ourselves.

I think preparing for the sleep changes and understanding how to support your little one in the outside world should be considered in pregnancy, so we have realistic expectations when the time comes and know what to do.

On this week’s episode I am joined by Lisa Lamb, known better on social media as the_night_ninja. Lisa is a mum of 3 and prides her sleep coaching approach as being non-judgemental and free from any bullshit. We are all for keeping it real on this podcast, so I am excited to pick Lisa’s expert brains on all things helping your baby to sleep.

We are going there! We are talking about sex during pregnancy and after you have had a baby. One of those subjects you may not want to talk with your mum or friends about but fear not because here on my podcast we love diving into taboo subjects and making sure no stone is left unturned.

Sex is a topic that often makes us blush or shy away from discussion, but I am not sure anything could make this week’s guest blush, as a sex educator April Davis spends her days writing about vaginas.

On Instagram as @thevaginablog April openly discusses all the things you want to ask but are too shy to. April describes herself as the reason you slightly tilt your phone away from others when you're scrolling and that is the exact reason, she is the perfect guest to join us today.

I am very grateful that April is taking time out from blogging at thevaginblog.com and swapping seats from hosting her own podcast to join me here today to share why talking about sex and vaginas need not make you blush.

Motherhood is the most beautiful, chaotic whirlwind. Some days you feel on top of the world and like you are smashing it and other days feel like they are a month long and full of relentless hurdles. We wouldn’t change it for the world, but that doesn’t mean that it is easy, so how can we mother in a more mindful way to make those rollercoaster days a little easier on us and the whole family?

This week I am so excited to chat to Izzy Judd, who as a mum of 3 is very aware of the challenges that come alongside motherhood.

Izzy is also a violinist and author of ‘Dare to Dream’ and ‘Mindfulness 4 Mums’. Izzy has been affected by anxiety through her life and has found how mindfulness and self-care can bring some calm to motherhood and that getting the family involved can help your little ones too.

Follow Izzy on Instagram @mrs_izzyjudd and check out her fantastic books which are genuinely among the most powerful I have read sharing her journey to motherhood and simple tactics to bring a calmer energy to the life of a busy mum.

Nutrition in pregnancy is a powerful force, not only does the food you eat need to nourish your body but also your growing baby. However, alongside nutrition in pregnancy comes a whole heap of myths and misconceptions. At a time where it is so important to have the facts and to be empowered to nourish your body and baby it is vital we unpick fact from fiction and I cannot think of a better guest to help us do just that today.

I am joined by the wonderful Rhiannon Lambert. Rhiannon is one of the UK’s leading nutritionists, a best-selling author and chart-topping podcast host.

In 2016 she founded Rhitrition, a renowned Harley Street clinic, which specialises in weight management, sports nutrition, eating disorders, and pre- and post-natal nutrition. As an evidence-based practitioner, Rhiannon is committed to the benefits of a scientific approach to nutrition.

In 2017, Rhiannon published her first book, the best-selling Re-Nourish: A Simple Way To Eat Well, part handbook, part cookbook, in which she shares her food philosophy to lay the foundations for a happy, healthy relationship with eating. She followed this up with Top Of Your Game: Eating For Mind & Body (2019), co-written with world snooker champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan. And her third book, The Science of Nutrition, was recently published in 2021 and is a Sunday times bestseller.

Rhiannon also hosts the top-rated ‘Food for Thought’ which gives listeners practical, evidence-based advice on how to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

So, I think it is safe to say we are in the very best hands today with Rhiannon!

BONUS EPISODE 16: Baby’s skin and Childs Farm with Joanna Jensen, the founder of Child’s Farm

For those of you who have been listening to this season’s podcast and all the knowledge bomb packed episodes you will have noticed that Childs Farm has sponsored Season 3 to help me deliver the honest support and information you deserve over the past 15 weeks. This is an extra special bonus episode where I am joined by Joanna, the founder of Childs Farm.

I speak with Joanna about how we can best support our babies precious and sensitive skin and why this is a subject close to her heart as well as mine. I learn just how personal Child’s Farm is to Joanna and her family, why it was born and the honestly inspirational ways they have been working to ensure their products are super sustainable and even help those around the world out of poverty through co-operatives. For example, the bottles are made from plastic bottles in Indonesia that would otherwise end up in our oceans due to the lack of recycling that takes place in these parts of the world. Joanna truly has gone the extra mile for sensitive skin and kindness to our planet and I felt truly inspired chatting to her.

Joanna Jensen is the Founder of the UK’s number one baby and children’s toiletry brand, Childs Farm.

As well as being an entrepreneur, Joanna is a mother of two, Mimi and Bella. They were the inspiration behind the launch of Childs Farm and the products she created were a solution to her frustration at not being able to find natural but fun products that could cope with her two daughters’ sensitive skin, fine flyaway hair.Joanna and her team believe that every child deserves to be happy in their skin, whether that be normal, sensitive or even eczema-prone. The daily success stories Joanna hears from parents who have had their children and their own lives transformed by using Childs Farm, is what truly drives her forward.

And remember- you can currently get an exclusive 25% off child’s farm products on their website using code MIDWIFEPIP25.

I also love the Child’s Farm You Tube cartoons where the characters on the labels come to life and you and your child can meet the Child’s Farm family: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb36L4sbgwVFaBfZvyEfwRQ

They come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes celebrated but often considered a taboo. Yes, we are talking boobs, bras and our breast health. Supporting our breast health is something really under discussed so this week we are going to shine a light on our boobs and how to look after them well and the common mistakes we make when it comes to bras.

On this week’s episode we are joined by Dr Nicola Brown, an Associate Professor in Female Health and Performance and teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate health-related programmes at St Mary’s University. She is also a member of the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth and on the Executive Board of the Women in Sport and Exercise Academic Network. Nikki’s research is focused on increasing scientific knowledge of breast health issues to inform effective strategies for optimising health and performance of female athletes and exercisers. With so little breast health chat out there I am really looking forward to this episode with Nikki to support you and your breasts! We talk managing breast pain and importantly why so many women are wearing the incorrect bra for them!

We concentrate so much time on educating ourselves about pregnancy and birth during this precious time and then ‘boom’ we dive into the world of parenting and caring for a new baby. It is no secret that navigating this new life is challenging and amazing in equal measures. Becoming a parent is such a huge change and there are many heightened or new emotions and behaviours to be navigated.

I am super excited to chat with this week’s expert guest Dr Siggie Cohen who is a expert in the field of parenting. For more than 35 years, Siggie has worked extensively with thousands of children and families, first as a teacher and then as a child developmental specialist. Her approach has proven successful in helping parents and teachers deepen their understanding of children’s behaviours, so they can support

them through the entire range of emotional challenges, including behavioural difficulties, transitions and trauma.

Siggie and I discuss parenting anxiety, navigating the whirlwind of parenting changes and the all too common mum-guilt. For more fantastic content by Siggie check her out on Instagram @dr.siggie.

For those who have been following me on social media it will come as no surprise that I am a huge advocate of exercise during pregnancy. The benefits are huge, and it is an area I am super passionate about. But of course, we want to ensure exercise in pregnancy is done safely to support our bodies. With this in mind you can be forgiven for ending up in a rabbit warren of frantic googling when it comes to exercise in pregnancy and finding a confusing tangle of poor quality, outdated, inaccurate information. Unhelpful to say the least but also super disempowering at a time when accurate information is imperative.

I am really excited to put your questions to this weeks podcast guest and dispel some of the myths and misconceptions around exercising during pregnancy and explore the best way to navigate this precious time.

I am joined by James Davies, this man has an extensive portfolio from a career in professional support himself, to working with elite athletes in the worlds of premier league football, the commonwealth, and Olympic games. More recently James has begun to focus on the historically neglected area of women in sport, qualified in pregnancy training and shares my relentless passion for empowering women to embrace healthy, active pregnancies safely.

And on a personal note, James has been the voice and expertise behind my own pregnancy journey allowing me to enjoy physical activity throughout and genuinely have the positive, healthy pregnancy I dreamt of.

Want to know more and work with James and I throughout your pregnancy? Head over to www.midwifepip.com and check out our services on ‘Your Pregnancy Journey’. See you there!

Pregnancy is a momentous time in a woman’s life, our bodies are dipped into a rollercoaster of hormonal changes and the physical and psychological adaption that takes place is huge. Mental health is thankfully being discussed more in pregnancy than in previous generations but there is still an air of taboo that surrounds this subject and it is so important we break those barriers down to support women.

On this week’s episode I am joined by fellow midwife Tessa Van Der Vord, who is a specialist NHS Mental Health Midwife and can be found on Instagram as @mentalhealth_midwife.

We are going to discuss the why’s, how’s and what’s of pregnancy mental health and help women realise they are absolutely not alone in any struggles they may face on this journey.

Tessa is a registered midwife and has been working for the NHS for the past 12 years. Prior to this, she trained as a midwife in Manchester and then moved home - working at a London hospital ever since. She has worked in most areas of midwifery but then settled into a specialist mental health post in 2016. In November 2020, Tessa gave birth to her first baby (Rupert - “Roo”) and experienced being pregnant and becoming a parent in a global pandemic. For many reasons, this journey was a huge learning curve for Tessa and it has had an influence on her practice in many ways. Tessa is in the process of returning to work and is really looking forward to working with pregnant people and their families again.

Think of a pregnant woman and I bet most of us recall seeing someone waddling about clutching their lower back looking somewhat less than comfortable. Pelvic girdle and back pain in pregnancy is a hugely common issue, so much so in fact that often we assume it is part and parcel of pregnancy and something we must simply endure. But what if that is not the case? On this week’s episode I am delighted to welcome back the wonderful Clare Bourne who you may remember from Season 1 when Clare shared so much wisdom on Pelvic Floor Health. I always learn so much when I chat with Clare and hope that you will too as we discuss the real truths around pelvic girdle and back pain in pregnancy.

Clare is an experienced Pelvic Health Physiotherapist and mum of 2. Clare’s passion for providing evidence-based information to mums during pregnancy and the postpartum period is driven by her ethos that women should never feel alone, or experience symptoms without support so I am immensely grateful that she is with us today. It is not a surprise to us that our bodies undergo enormous change during pregnancy and childbirth and one of the biggest issue’s women are often faced with is diastasis recti- whereby the abdominal muscles separate, leaving a gap.

For many women this can have a huge impact on their physical and psychological wellness, and it is not a condition that is commonly discussed prenatally leaving women unsure as to why a diastasis has happened to their body and what can be done to help correct it.

So, I am very pleased to be joined by Diastasis Recti expertGrainne Donnelly to reveal all we need to know about this surprisingly common symptom.

Gráinne is an Advanced Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health. Her particular areas of interest include diastasis rectus abdominis and perinatal exercise. She is involved in research on both of these topics and looks forward to exploring and developing how we understand them so that we can better serve the women of today. Gráinne is an honorary member of the Perinatal Physical Activity Research Team and is on the specialist advisory board of the Active Pregnancy Foundation. Let’s be honest babies and nappies basically come hand in hand and much of the first few months of parenthood is spent conducting continual nappy changes and a increased supermarket bill each week from the endless supply needed. And with all of this you can que the black bin bags of disposable nappies piling up which will mostly end up in a landfill site somewhere. In fact, it is estimated that a baby will use around 6000 disposable nappies before he or she is potty trained!

In a world where we are becoming more environmentally aware and looking for more sustainable ways to parent, reusable cloth nappies can offer a fantastic option. But navigating the right style, nappy system and washing routine can feel a bit overwhelming. This is something I have personally done a lot of research around and thankfully the complicated nappy systems and wrapping that was necessary in previous years is no longer. Reusable nappies can actually be as simple as disposables with the big benefit of saving us money and helping the environment in which we live too.

On this weeks episode I have the pleasure of being joined by an expert, Fiona Smyth, founder of TotsBots, whose nappies are gorgeous and I cannot wait to dress our little boy in all the cute bottom designs very soon, to help us fully understand the world of reusable nappies, our options and why it really can be a simple and fantastic solution.

You can check out the full TotsBots range and many of the products discussed today via the website link below:

As women we seemingly spend half of our lives trying not to get pregnant and the other half trying to or worrying about our abilities to conceive. The journey to motherhood is not always plain sailing and for some parents it’s a full on stormy, dark skies road. Operations, injections, lengthy waits, and baby loss feature in many more parents trying to conceive journeys than most of us are aware. Infertility and fertility struggles still remain a huge taboo subject but it is so important that parents on this journey can recognise that they are not alone.

On this weeks episode I am delighted to be joined by Sophie Martin, a registered midwife who has been working in a central London hospital for the past 9 years. 4 years ago Sophie and her husband James started trying for a baby. Since then, they have undergone 6 rounds of IVF treatment, and sadly also said goodbye to their identical twins sons Cecil & Wilfred who were born prematurely at 21 weeks. Sophie has been sharing her story on her Instagram account @the.infertile.midwife, to spread awareness of infertility and baby loss, and to provide support to others who are also living through this.

https://www.instagram.com/the.infertile.midwife/

And, I am sure I speak for many women when I say the biggest of thank you’s to Sophie for sharing her journey so openly and honestly to support others navigating a similar path.

The fourth trimester and motherhood encompass such huge changes in a woman’s life, yet we hardly spend any time planning for some of the challenges. Exercising in the postpartum has a whole heap of physical and psychological benefits but the realities of this with a new baby can be a challenge. Feeding your baby, navigating life as a new parent, sleep deprivation, a recovering body, good old mum guilt and lack of routine all creep in.

But what can we do, how can we negotiate all of this and what should exercise look like post birth?

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Pre- and Post-natal exercise expert and founder of Bumps and Burpees, Charlie Barker.

Charlie is the founder of Bumps & Burpees, the go-to community for new and expectant mums who want to stay strong, healthy, and happy throughout their pregnancies and into motherhood. As a qualified pre & post-natal exercise specialist Charlie is passionate about educating and empowering women at a time in their lives where things can feel daunting and living and breathing it all herself now has only made her desire to help others deeper.

Check out Charlie’s Instagram page and website below for more pre and postnatal exercise inspiration:

I must also mention that Charlie is also an author having released her brilliant book which you can also check out below:

The power of our gut.

No seriously, our gut and microbiome are incredible! It is not until I begun planning a pregnancy that I really tuned into, and researched gut health and I was literally mind blown!

In fact, ensuring a healthy gut and microbiome is one of the ways we can set our children and maternal bodies up for strong, healthier futures. Our gut is connected to so much of our wellness and the evidence really is building so I think it is important we shout about it and get the word out there to empower more women to consider boosting their gut health to boost their family’s wellness.

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Rebecca Traylen. Rebecca started her journey at the University of Nottingham studying Biology where she became fascinated in the relationship between diet, health, and disease. This led her to study a master's in nutrition at the University of Surrey and practises as an Associate Nutritionist.

Since studying at Surrey, Rebecca is now the resident nutritionist at Probio7 and is keen to raise awareness of the importance of gut health and how our resident bacteria can affect our health and well-being, throughout our whole life.

On this week’s episode we discuss the importance of the microbiome in regards to pregnancy and infant health, what it really means and simple, practical ways we can boost the health of our guts.

We spend so much time planning for pregnancy, researching birth and focusing on growing the healthiest baby, analysing all our decisions to ensure we are doing what is perceived as best for our babies and throughout motherhood we continue to focus our energies on our little ones ensuring they have all they need to thrive.

But who is focusing on the mum? This brand-new person who is born when we birth our first child and a person who needs care in equal measures.

This is where postpartum nutrition is so often neglected, considered as an afterthought, or buried at the bottom of the postpartum priorities pile. But my goodness we need to unbury it and hold it in much higher regard.

Your body has been devoted to growing, nurturing, and birthing a whole new life. It is undergoing a rollercoaster of psychological and physical change; it has a whole journey of recovery to embark on and postpartum nutrition ladies really is our friend on this ride.

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Dr Harriet Holme, a Registered Nutritionist (AfN), and former experienced paediatrician. After studying at Cambridge University, Harriet worked in the NHS for over a decade before focusing on nutrition. She has a PhD in genetics and is a lecturer in nutrition. There are so many myths and misconceptions when it comes to exercising in pregnancy but none more so than pregnancy and our core muscles. Unsurprisingly women are left confused, scared, and disempowered to embrace safe, effective core exercises that are fundamental to our wellness, to a healthier pregnancy and smoother postpartum recovery. That is right ladies- we should not ignore our core in pregnancy!

So, on this week’s episode I am really excited to be joined by Hollie Grant to discuss what our core is- because most of us do not actually understand it, why our core is so important in pregnancy and how we can be safely exercising it to protect and support our changing, growing bodies.

Hollie is a woman with a hell of a lot of passion to empower women to feel strong, powerful, and healthy in pregnancy and her message that you can be Pregnant and Powerful is something that totally resonates with me, and that the world needs to hear. In fact, Hollie attempted a world record attempt for the most pregnant women exercising at one time- that is serious dedication!

Specialising in prenatal Pilates and being an award-winning Pilates instructor, Hollie is an expert in the area of the core, stability and functional movement for pregnancy and so we are in great hands for today’s chat!

You can find Hollie on social media:

@thepilatespt

And check out her prenatal fitness plan:

@thebumpplan

Hollie’s goal is to help every woman learn to love exercise for its effect on performance, rather than aesthetic gains and I could not be more on board with this ethos!

All expectant parents have one main goal in mind- to grow a healthy baby.

We have seen such a rise in childhood conditions such as asthma, eczema, allergies and obesity over recent years, all conditions that can be unpleasant, troublesome and affect the quality of a child’s life

But what if there was evidence that we could actively adopt some very simple lifestyle changes in pregnancy to help reduce the risks of such conditions?

Well, I don’t know about you, but I am all ears for this chat with the wonderful Michelle Henning. Michelle is a mother herself and author of ‘Grow Healthy Babies’ a book I highly recommend reading and is linked below:

https://www.growhealthybabies.com

Michelle and her husband suffered from lifelong allergies themselves and wanted their children to not have to endure the dietary restrictions, skin issues and health complications they had, had to and so this incredible book and resource for other parents was born.

On this episode Michelle shares some of the simple, yet highly effective and empowering things we can do in pregnancy and parenthood to help protect our babies from these common childhood conditions and to ultimately ‘grow healthy babies’.

One of the most important things to consider as a new parent is ways to practice safer sleeping with your little one. Sadly, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome claims the lives of around 4 babies each week in the UK so informing ourselves about ways to help reduce this risk and to ensure your baby is sleeping as safely as possible is a key part of parenthood preparation.

I am delighted to be joined on this week’s episode by the wonderful Stella parkin who works for The Lullaby Trust to talk through ways we can do just that and provide you with some of the essential information you need to support your little one’s safer sleeping journey.

If anyone has not yet checked out the lullaby trust website, I highly recommend that you do, it is a fantastic resource that can provide you with the best, evidence based information about safer sleeping and reducing the risk of SIDS.

Follow this link to check it out www.lullabytrust.org.uk/

For expectant or new parents under 25 years of age there is an additional resource available for you here: https://littlelullaby.org.uk

Joining us for today’s chat is Stella, Stella qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1986 at Guy’s Hospital, London. Following a range of nursing roles including as a practice nurse and school nurse, Stella undertook her health visitor qualification and gained a PGCE working as a lecturer on a range of health-related courses.

Stella initially joined The Lullaby Trust in 2016 as a Regional Development Officer in the South West. The role involved representing The Lullaby Trust at a regional level to raise and maintain awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) within the region and spread safer sleep messages, mainly through delivering training. She also supported bereaved parents in the region through annual Family Days and was the local contact for Lullaby Trust befrienders.

Stella now works as the Professional Development Lead within The Lullaby Trust. This new role means that Stella is involved with ensuring that The Lullaby Trust’s work reflects public health priorities.

I am so pleased Stella is joining us today to share her tips, tricks and important facts about safer sleeping that could, quite honestly, help to save a baby’s life.

Why caring for YOU in the postpartum is so important - With Emma Bord

During pregnancy and birth your body has nurtured, grown and birthed your newborn baby. Your body undergoes huge physical and physiological changes during these stages and often we underestimate the importance of caring for your body after birth.

The fourth trimester can encompass so many challenges from sleep deprivation, to hormonal driven changes to our mood and physical symptoms of recovery.

Regardless of mode of birth your body needs time and attention to recover properly.

Looking after yourself in the postpartum should absolutely be considered a priority and not a self-indulgence, yet so often self-care for new mums gets lost along the motherhood journey.

One woman who knows these challenges and the importance of support and recovery after birth is Emma Bord who is joining us to chat about how we should be caring for and nurturing our bodies post birth. Emma shares my ethos that the phrase “pre baby body” needs abolishing and switching out for a deeper understanding about the changes our body has undertaken and ways we can support our recovery.

Emma is first and foremost a mother of 3 young children, all 4years and under, her youngest born during lockdown this summer. Alongside parenting she is a Personal Trainer and Pilates instructor focussing on Pre and Post Natal exercise, with the hope of inspiring women to keep fit and well during and after pregnancy in a safe way to aid mothers both physically and mentally.

Emma is currently teaching a variety of classes via Zoom as well as 1-2-1 sessions and has recently set up an on-demand library for the convenience of her clients to be able to train at their own leisure from the comfort of her own home. You can find Emma on Instagram @emmabordpt for more pre- and post-natal exercise inspiration. You can contact Emma through her website www.emmabordpt.com and during lockdown she has created a fantastic online library packed with safe pre and post-natal workouts you can do at home, check it out here: www.instabook.io/s2/emmabordpersonaltraining/?m=library

Perineal and Vaginal Tearing during Birth - With Dr Brooke Vandermolen

If there is one thing that seems to occupy an expectant mum’s mind in the preparation for birth it has to be perineal and vaginal tearing. And for good reason, the natural stretching that takes place during birth can result in some degree of tearing for around 85% of women having a vaginal birth. So, arming ourselves with the correct information, considering measures that may help prevent tearing and how to care for the area in the postpartum are super important.

I am delighted to be joined by the perfect guest, Dr Brooke Vandermolen, to help me bust the common myths and ensure you are informed with accurate, evidence-based information to switch you from a mindset of feeling scared to feeling prepared for the birth of your little one.

Dr Brooke Vandermolen is a practicing Obstetrics & Gynaecology Registrar doctor, and a mother of 2 babies under 3. She has presented her research into high-risk pregnancy at major international conferences and published in prominent medical journals. Brooke is experienced at dealing with all aspects of women’s health and pregnancy, including assessing patients with a range of gynaecological concerns, and performing and assisting in surgical procedures.

Brooke has created her educational platform “The OBGYN mum” @theobygnmum via which she shares insights and tips around pregnancy, fertility, menopause and more through social media and blog posts. She aims to empower women to feel in control of their health throughout their lives by imparting evidence-based knowledge in a relatable way and myth-busting common taboo subjects.

Positive Birth Story

Em and Olive

There are so many birth stories to be read, but the power of listening to and reading positive and empowering birth stories as you prepare your mind and body to meet your little one is incredible.

Birth really is a whole-body experience that requires as much if not more psychological preparation as physical. And your birth is not merely one day it is an experience that stays with you forever so preparing is really important to having a positive experience regardless of the twists and turns that may crop up.

There is no right or wrong way to birth. Hospital birth, home birth, water birth, epidural birth, induced birth, vaginal birth, forceps birth, caesarean birth – they can all be empowering and truly positive experiences.

I am so honoured to be joined by the lovely Em today to chat about her birth experience. Em is a personal trainer and founder of Surrey studio @theBarnKT9. Em specialises in pre and postnatal training and is passionate about making sure women feel strong throughout their pregnancy and beyond.

In the past year Em has experienced what it feels like herself as she gave birth to her daughter Olive in November 2020. Em and all of her brilliant exercise motivation as well as her pregnancy and postpartum journey can be found on Instagram @on_point_training

Let’s talk about Homebirth - With Midwife Keri

When it comes to deciding where to give birth there are a few options- we have consultant led units, midwifery led birthing centres or the comfort of your own home. Various health and pregnancy factors may influence the recommendation for your place of birth and your choice but having accurate, honest information about your birthplace choices is fundamental to helping you make the right decision for you.

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by a fellow midwife, Keri.

Keri’s career has taken a different path to me as she has been practicing as an independent midwife in the North West of England for the last 3 years. Keri’s career has been based in the community setting and in the attendance of many homebirths. Keri is passionate about the ethos of community midwifery and getting to know the families that she cares for. Then being privileged enough to attend their home births is the icing on the top for Keri.

Keri’s independent practice means she now teaches antenatal, hypnobirthing and breastfeeding classes. When Keri is not supporting homebirths and educating new parents, she shares my passion exercise and fitness. Keri teaches Aqua natal classes at her local swimming pool and during lockdown has adapted to teach online fitness classes to encourage us all to keep active in the safety of our homes. Keri has also used her Instagram page @midwife_keri to help provide new mums with postpartum advice and support.

But more important than all of that, Keri is also mum to two girls, a toddler and newborn which understandably keep her very busy. So, I am so grateful that Keri has found some time to come on and chat to us about homebirth today. We chat about the pros and cons of opting for a homebirth, transfer rates, safety elements and Keri’s own experiences of having both a homebirth and a hospital birth.

Meet an Obstetrician - With Dr Ellie Rayner

During the journey of pregnancy and birth there can be many twists and turns that crop up along the way. For this reason, many women will meet an Obstetrician during pregnancy, during labour or even after the birth of your baby. An obstetrician is a doctor who specialises in these specific areas and the are there to support you to make informed choices and decisions about your care pathway. For some women, the idea of seeing an obstetrician feels a little anxiety provoking or concerning that interventions may be recommended, or they may be given labels such as having a “high risk” pregnancy.

So, on this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Dr Ellie Rayner who is here to explain why meeting your Obstetrician need not be an anxiety provoking experience and to reassure you that we are all on the same team when it comes to your pregnancy and birth.

Dr Ellie Rayner is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist doctor working full time in Devon. She’s also Antenatal and Hypnobirthing Teacher and founder of The Maternity Collective. She is particularly interested in improving women’s pregnancy and birth experience and reducing the chance of complications and feels that this involves comprehensive pregnancy and antenatal education, starting even before conception.

Ellie and I discuss how your consultations with an obstetrician should look, how we interpret risk and making informed decisions that are right for you and your baby. The take home from this episode is that your obstetrician is on your side and you shouldn’t feel concerned about seeing one during your pregnancy or birth journey. Pregnancy and the Postpartum can be very anxiety provoking times, add into that mix a global pandemic, self-isolation and a huge amount of uncertainty on future lockdowns and prospects and we can find ourselves amidst a challenging time to say the least. Equipping ourselves with mindfulness tools and techniques can be game changing in helping us manage our daily stresses and anxieties. I was, like many, a mindfulness sceptic until I actually tried it and realised it is not all about chanting and crystal balls as it is often portrayed. By all means chant away if that is what works for you but for so many it can be a powerful way of focusing our minds and bodies on the present, breathing and relaxing into a calm state that enables us to take on the day in a positive way.

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Rachel @_stronglikemama_ , a qualified hypnobirthing practitioner, from Kent and a mum of two boys. Rachel trained and qualified with KGHypnobirthing and set up Strong Like Mama, to teach a full antenatal and hypnobirthing course to expectant couples.

She wants women to go through pregnancy and birth feeling truly confident and informed, and like they are the ones in charge of what happens to their body and their baby (which of course they are!) They should feel empowered and, frankly, a little bit like a superhero after birthing a baby!

Rachel teaches both group and private course and offers face to face and zoom classes too. Rachel and I discuss how many of the tools used in hypnobirthing can transform into everyday life and assist us to live in more mindful and present way. At the end of this episode I am super excited that Rachel will also be sharing a short relaxation practice, so join us and give it a go in the comfort of your own home and see how you feel afterwards

Google anything to do with labour and you will likely hear the term ‘Hypnobirthing’.

But it is not about chanting with charms and crystals, in fact that is a huge misconception!

At its core, Hypnobirthing aims to help a woman deal with any fear or anxiety around birth and aims to equip you with methods to help you stay calm, relaxed and in control.

On this week’s episode I am delighted to be joined by Abby @abby_loveyourbirth , an experienced Hypnobirthing teacher and teacher trainer. Abby and I talk abouthow the practices of hypnobirthing compliment your body’s physiology in labour. By enabling your body and mind to be relaxed, birth can be less painful, quicker and a very positive experience. Abby is based in West Yorkshire, with many years’ experience teaching hypnobirthing to expectant parents and also training and mentoring others to become hypnobirthing teachers she is the perfect guest for this weeks podcast chat.

Abby helps parents to feel calm and confident about birth, equipping them with the tools to have a positive birth experience however this may happen for them. Abby really does practice what she preaches having given birth to her 4 children all through which she embraced hypnobirthing techniques.

Abby mirrors my ethos that all women should approach their birth free from fear and I hope this chat helps you to embark on your positive birth journey.

Enjoy listening and please remember too Subscribe.

It comes as no surprise that our bodies undergo incredible changes during labour and birth. But how much do we actually understand about the ‘normal’ physiological process?

On this week’s episode I am joined by midwife Angie Willis who explains why women should understand what their body is doing and the amazing things it is capable of. We hear of terms such as contractions, the birth canal and cervical dilation but what actually are these and how does labour andbirth work?

This is a hugely empowering and enlightening listen and Angie mirrors my ethos that all women should be fully informed about their bodies. So, I am thrilled that Angie has come on to chat about birth physiology and address this gap in understanding.

Angie can be found on Instagram @theecomidwife where many cute eco nappies feature!

The concept of an assisted birth is an anxiety provoking one amongst most pregnant women and many are desperate to avoid the use of forceps of ventouse instruments during their birth. However instrumental assistance is currently used in around 1 in 8 UK births and so it is imperative women are informed and empowered about them.

On this week’s episode I am joined by Consultant Obstetrician Aamna to discuss the ins and outs of assisted and instrumental birth, to help you realise that it is not something to be afraid of and that an assisted birth can still form a hugely positive birthing experience.

When the lovely Aamna is not chatting to expectant mums or supporting birth on labour ward she can be found on Instagram @aamnasasanow

For many women exercise forms part of their identity and hugely influences their overall wellness.

The benefits of exercise for our physical and mental health are well understood and after giving birth this is often more important than ever. During pregnancy and birth women’s body’s are devoted to growing, nurturing and birthing their baby and to do so they undergo huge physiological and psychological changes so it is important we return to exercise in a sensible and safe way in the postpartum.

Guidance seems to be very generalised and there exists a huge amount of vague and confusing information around the processes of postpartum exercise so I am thrilled to be joined on this week’s episode by Wendy Powell the founder and CEO of MUTU system and a woman who is as passionate as I am about supporting women to embrace safe exercise in a way that will enhance their health and wellness.

MUTU system and more information about the services offered can be found at: https://mutusystem.com and on Instagram @mutusystem

Naghmehis a Delivery Suite Coordinator with over 40 years of experience, she featured as the star of Emma Willis’s Delivering Babies show and is one of the most passionate and dedicated midwives.
