We returning to Valdemar with Magic’s Promise, by Mercedes Lackey! In his second book, Vanyel is 12 years older but perhaps not wiser as he struggles to move past his lover Tylendel’s tragic death. While attempting to find some rest at his family’s home (and mostly just finding homophobia), Vanyel and his companion Yfandes are pulled into a mysterious royal murder in a neighboring kingdom. He is tasked with uncovering the truth from the terrified Tashir, one of the only survivors and the suspected (but unlikely) culprit. Vanyel mopes, gets very tired and hungry, and ultimately grows - and we cheer him on every step of the way.

Sirius the dog star is punished for a mysterious murder by being trapped in an earthly pup form - and his only way back to his galaxy is to find the enigmatic Zoi that he threw down to Earth. Leave it to DWJ to make this conceit at turns heartbreaking, hilarious and ultimately bittersweet. Madeleine maintains that for those similarly traumatized by The Tigger Movie, this is a tough read. Grace is too consumed by big dumb dog thoughts to ponder anything other than dumpster leftovers and the lure of the Wild Hunt. Join us!

As would-be dragon riders and adolescents during the early 00’s, we’re perfectly positioned to discuss Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. This one has haunted us since we started the podcast - we knew it was inevitable and yet we procrastinated until our 101st episode. We break down our conflicted feelings about this teen-penned dragon epic and own up to our own teenage jealousies of both the protagonist and the author himself. Is it a good idea for a child to have a book published by a major house? Is Saphira too subservient to her puny human friend? Is it cool to openly lust after an unconscious woman? Our answers won’t surprise you, but we think you’ll get a kick out of listening anyway!

All your old friends are living on forever in Michael Ende's The Neverending Story - but that's a story for another time. Listen in as Grace grows furious discussing hungry heroes on quests, Madeleine creates the Giant Spider Meter and both of us manage to forget nearly every character's name (but the sheer number of proper nouns does us no favors). In all seriousness, this fascinating novel places familiar folk characters in an entirely new framework and the results are pretty cool. Fans of the 1984 film should definitely check out the source material - there's just no comparison. Hop on your luckdragon and hang tight!

Sleep deprivation, stories-within-stories-within-stories and questionable romance come together to make up this engaging, Shahrazad-centric retelling of One Thousand and One Nights. The titular character is a teenager tasked with telling her new husband a story so good he'll spare her life just to make it past a cliffhanger (we're just grumpy that we don't get to hear much of that story ourselves). We fill in the blanks with a discussion of the novel's sometimes questionable approach to girl power and plenty of reminiscing about the role of storytelling in our lives.

Creating this episode was an unexpected nightmare.
