All Things TechIE was born after ISE2017 when the two Irish A.V Gurus decided to place Ireland on the map with regards to Audio Visual technology. Sure there are other AV and technology podcasts but nothing from Ireland. So we decided to put a microphone in front of us and have some fun!
In episode 78, We discuss the amended Internet safety laws aimed at protecting children online. The proposal includes age verification for services with adult content and raises concerns about transparency and data collection. Tech Minister Paul Scully defends the bill but understands the need for flexibility.
Plus, we unveil the latest news from Virgin Galactic as their rocket plane Unity takes off for commercial operations.
The episode kicks off with a discussion on the amended Internet safety laws proposed by the government, aimed at better protecting children online. While the bill requires age verification for services publishing or allowing pornographic content, concerns have been raised by the Digital Rights Group regarding transparency and data collection. Tech Minister Paul Scully defends the legislation, acknowledging its imperfections but asserting its flexibility. Proposed amendments for age checking technologies such as facial recognition and official ID verification have sparked worries among digital rights campaigners about privacy and the collection of children's biometric data. The bill grants powers to the communications regulator Ofcom, allowing them to penalise tech companies and block access to certain websites.
Moving on, the podcast explores the recent developments in Canadian legislation that requires tech giants like Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) to pay for news. In response, these companies have decided to block Canadian news, raising concerns about the impact on media organisations supporting the bill. Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic rocket plane Unity takes centre stage as it begins its commercial operations. Unity's successful first mission enabled three Italians to carry out experiments in weightless conditions. Sir Richard is now ready to send hundreds of ticket holders on space-bound journeys.
Meta (Facebook) also makes headlines with the launch of their $7.99 per month virtual reality (VR) subscription service. Subscribers gain access to new games each month, although Meta's VR unit has suffered a significant $4 billion loss. The podcast moves on to discuss BT's investigation following a major disruption to the UK's emergency call services.
Moreover, Twitter now requires users to sign in to view tweets, leading to criticism from Elon Musk who considers it a temporary emergency measure. The move has annoyed users without Twitter accounts, while Musk intends to take legal action against those who stole Tesla's data. Twitter itself has implemented measures to win back advertisers and increase subscription revenue, including charging for access to its application program interface (API).

Episode 47 of All Things TechIE podcast where Justin speaks with John Roche (CT Ireland) and Alan Burns (NEP Europe) on their new Media Technology Graduate Training Programme which launched earlier this month.
With a number of media courses available in educational institutions across Ireland, the new programme will provide graduates, or those expecting to graduate this year, with a chance to learn the “Real World” crafts of broadcast and audio-visual technical operations, and as part of
their training they will have the chance to rotate through various departments, learning on-the-job on some of the most high-profile and exciting events in the events calendar.
Creative Technology Ireland, (CT), specialises in Live Events technical production and audio-visual systems installation- everything from a large screed LED display for a sports stadium, to virtual studio facilities for corporate events, and its clients include broadcasters such as RTE and
Virgin Media, as well as many of the largest corporate campus facilities in the country.
NEP Ireland specialises in the provision of Television Outside Broadcast services, including many of the world’s largest sporting events, television shows, and public events, with a large fleet out outside broadcast vehicles, satellite and links facilities, and includes SSVFX, the film special
effects company responsible for many of the digital effects seen in leading TV and film productions.
The programme will run for two years, and during this time, trainees will learn a variety of crafts including vision and audio operations, technical maintenance, rigging, and associated skills. The trainees will be on full-time, paid contracts during their training, and will be expected to successfully complete a number of industry certification courses during their term with bodies such as Avixa (www.avixa.com) the global Audio-Visual educational organisation, and NEP-U, NEP group’s own worldwide University Programme.
Those successfully completing the programme will be offered full-time positions in either CT Ireland or NEP Ireland. It is intended to make this new innovation an annual programme to develop new talent to help the growth of the two companies.

Kevin Moore is now retired and our first retired interviewee that has been under the spotlight explaining his long background in the Audio Visual industry which spans over 40 years.
Kevin was a Director of Creative Technology Ireland (CT Ireland), the Irish division of the international Creative Technology group up until retirement at the end of 2020. CT Ireland was formerly Ion Solutions, and is Ireland's premier supplier of broadcast and professional AV systems, live events technical production services, and provision of managed services, and employs a total of 70+ people in the group.
Among other achievements, Kevin was a key part of the team that was awarded an IBC Innovation Award at the 2013 IBC Convention, with our client, RTE and technology partner TMD, for the FAST Project at RTE, to provide file-based ingest and transmission facilities for the Irish National Broadcaster.
Kevin played a key role in determining the technology deployed by the CT-I team, and as well as his technical experience, Kevin has many years of financial and operational management experience.

With the vast majority of organisations accepting some sort of hybrid work balance due to the events of the last 9 months, AV specialists have an opportunity to show leadership and add value to organisations of almost every stripe. Cloud infrastructures have rapidly developed as organisations scramble to support remote working, and are now primed for investment. Specifically in Ireland, the tax expense arrangements to facilitate remote working suggested by Leo Varadkar offer an opportunity for specific investment into enterprise-grade video and audio solutions.
However, there are new difficulties too. Identifying specific types of workers in customer businesses was simple in a rigid workplace with set environments, but the hybrid working revolution has made these personas more fluid. Rather than looking at traditional personas, businesses - and particularly channel businesses - need to help customers have conversations that allow them to identify not just where they work, but also to address the specific challenges that are unique to each individual.

Tom Kehr joins Justin Dawson to be under the spotlight in Episode 35 of the All Things TechIE Podcast.
Since 1986, Tom has been involved in designing, installing, operating or purchasing audiovisual systems. He has also been heavily involved in church audio, leading ministry teams, and training volunteers in both permanent and portable venues. In addition, Tom has owned a regional sound reinforcement company for more than 16 years. Prior to joining AVIXA, Tom was a senior designer for a large Washington, D.C., area firm. He is a member of SynAudCon and AES and a licensed amateur radio operator.

Integrated Systems Europe began life in 2004, with the first edition of the show being held in Geneva, Switzerland. It hosted 120 exhibitors and attracted 3,500 visitors. Most importantly, it laid the foundation for unprecedented growth for the annual show over the years.
Fast forward 16 years, and ISE 2020 attracted more than 1,300 exhibitors and over 116,000 visits to its final edition at the RAI Amsterdam. ISE is now recognised as the largest AV and systems integration show in the world. It is the European destination for an industry that is truly global.
Plans for ISE in 2021 is for Barcelona to host this massive AV show. However COVID-19 has had a massive effect on the industry and has cancelled many trade shows and made them go virtual. CES in 2021 will be an all virtual trade show for the first time. So where does this leave ISE 2021 in Barcelona? Will the event still take place?

MoMo - it's a Japanese sculpture it isn't real!
After being destroyed by the Japanese Artist, MoMo received worldwide attention. The original sculpture, called Mother Bird, shows a human-style head with long dark hair spread sparsely over the creature's forehead, enormous round eyes, an over sized mouth and a flattened nose. The naked creature has the feet of a bird and not much of a torso. It was built in 2016 and displayed at Vanilla Gallery in Tokyo.
The Momo challenge was an online game, shared on messaging services like WhatsApp, that tried to convince young children to commit violence or even suicide.
It made headlines for allegedly causing the death of a 12-year-old girl in Argentina. While it has been refuted by various police agencies worldwide due to lack of evidence, the hysteria surrounding the Momo challenge grew, sparking other iterations of the challenge.
With the viral news controversary MoMo caused, just how bad is it for children to be connected to the online world via games consoles, smartphones, tablets, mobile phones and PC?
Or even a more worrying question do parents know what they're children are doing online, what games they are playing even on their games console who they are communicating with?
Justin Dawson interviewed Cliona Curley from Cybersafe Ireland and asked how to protect minors from abuse online.

We've reached double digits. Welcome to Episode 10 of the All Things TechIE podcast
In this episode, Justin & Simon attend the 146 AES International Convention in the CCD Dublin.
Dublin was the 2019 destination for Europe’s preeminent professional audio education and networking event. If your interests include Studio Recording, Live Sound, Networked Audio, Broadcast & Streaming, Music Production, Post Production, Game Audio, Spatial Sound, Audio for AR/VR/XR and Product Development, AES Dublin was the place to be!
The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research.
The Audio Engineering Society’s 146th International Pro Audio Convention in Dublin, Ireland drew to a close on March 23, wrapping up four days of audio science and education that drew attendees from 47 countries to Europe’s premier annual professional audio event. “It was a pleasure to bring the AES convention to Dublin for the very first time,” commented Convention Co-Chair and Dublin resident Enda Bates, “and an excellent way to kick off the formation of the new AES Ireland regional section in style. It was also great to see a more diverse range of presenters and topics, something which was specifically highlighted by many attendees as a welcome development.”
The Convention content was packed with options, notes Co-Chair Ben Kok, with 200 individual Workshops, Tutorials, Paper and Poster presentations and Special Events held in parallel across the four days of AES Dublin in seven auditoriums in the Dublin Convention Centre. Hosting top minds in audio from around the world, this year’s convention featured the AES Heyser Memorial lecture “Learning to Listen” by industry innovator and digital reverb pioneer David Griesinger and the keynote address – arranged by AES Dublin’s third co-chair, Mariana Lopez – “Inclusive Sonic Interactions” presented by Aalborg University Copenhagen Professor Stefania Serafin.
“For topics like cathedral acoustics and spatial electroacoustic music and education, there was a link between the technical program, off-site and special events,” Kok elaborates, “Overall, immersive/3D sound and spatial audio had a strong presence at the convention, covering both sonic capture as well as reproduction through loudspeakers or headphones.”
Playing a key role in the Convention’s immersive content, Co-Chair Lopez was actively involved in the program including having the “true honor” of chairing the panel “The Present and Future of Audio for Film and Television,” which brought together industry notables Howard Bargroff, Anna Bertmark, Emma Butt and Fiona Cruickshank.
The immersive audio emphasis was continued into AES Dublin’s innovative hands-on sessions, part of the Convention’s dedicated student programing including the bustling Education and Career fair and the student recording and design competitions. Student attendance was typically strong for AES Dublin, a harbinger of future Society leadership as evidenced by former Student Members who attended AES Dublin as professional Members and participated in paper presentations and workshops, along with AES Dublin planning.
The theme of diversity and inclusion was brought to the forefront of the Convention with Co-Chair Lopez’s AES Dublin Opening Ceremonies challenge for support and participation of the Society’s initiatives, and in the AES Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s Town Hall dialog, which she moderated. Questions about how the Society moves forward towards equality, noted Lopez, “are ultimately about who we are, and who we hope to be.”
As AES Dublin concluded, the site selection of Vienna, Austria, was announced for AES Europe in 2020 (May 25 – 28). Next on the AES Convention calendar is the upcoming AES New York International Pro Audio Convention (October 16 – 19, 2019)

The idea of this topic originated during the summer when Simon and I were discussing the Leaving Certificate Irish state examinations and both of us came to a conclusion that neither of us dreamt that we were going to end up in the world of Audio Visual.
So is it easy to enter the world of Audio Visual? Do many AV Professionals plan that this is the career they wanted to take as a young 17 or 18 year old who has just finished their state examinations? Is there enough courses to assist with young people wanting to pursue audio visual as a career?
This programme has received a massive response which has resulted in a small series on "How I got involved in AV" which will be part of our monthly podcast.

Welcome to our first monthly podcast. We're two Audio Visual / IT Gurus who love to talk tech and realised there is actually no good AV Tech podcast originating from the Emerald Isles of Ireland so we wanted to change this and place Ireland on the map when it comes to AV and Technology.
