“Leisure” by W. H. Davies

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

"i carry your heart with me" by e e cummings

i carry your heart with me

(i carry it in my heart)

i am never without it

(anywhere i go you go,my dear;

and whatever is done

by only me is your doing,my darling)

i fear no fate

(for you are my fate,my sweet)

i want no world

(for beautiful you are my world,my true)

and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant

and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;

which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)

and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart

"Out Here On This Very Day” by Prince Neptune (Cody Simpson)

Out here on this very day

We journey further into the illusion

Adrift in the great dream

Yearning for entry into the severed realm

Do you know that the death of earth soon come?

Do you know the progress of destruction?

Do you know the strange new topography of the coast?

Life closes in slowly around us

And we seek salvation in copulation

In drugs

And by sunset we ascend

Only to find that our minds

And our bodies

Weren't ours at all.

"I Have Fallen" by Christopher Poindexter

I have fallen

in love many times.

Have you ever sat in a bar

and watched a lonely man

or woman by themselves,

their tired eyes shaken,

fixed on nothing but

the glass in front of them?

Can't you taste their sadness

from across the room?

Those people.

The brave trodden souls
Tobacco stinging bright our gypsie eyes
Kaleidoscopes reaching fingers through our minds
To stir our colored dreams
Our dusty hearts set aflame

And here the sparks become our loves

"Paris in Spring” by Sara Teasdale

The city's all a-shining

Beneath a fickle sun,

A gay young wind's a-blowing,

The little shower is done.

But the rain-drops still are clinging

And falling one by one --

Oh it's Paris, it's Paris,

And spring-time has begun.

I know the Bois is twinkling

In a sort of hazy sheen,

And down the Champs the gray old arch

Stands cold and still between.

But the walk is flecked with sunlight

Where the great acacias lean,

Oh it's Paris, it's Paris,

And the leaves are growing green.

The sun's gone in, the sparkle's dead,

There falls a dash of rain,

But who would care when such an air

Comes blowing up the Seine?

And still Ninette sits sewing

Beside her window-pane,

When it's Paris, it's Paris,

And spring-time's come again.

"Fourth Caprice in Montparnasse" by TS Eliot

We turn the corner of the street

And again

Here is a landscape grey with rain

On black umbrellas, waterproofs,

And dashing from the slated roofs

Into a mass of mud and sand.

Behind a row of blackened trees.

The dripping plastered houses stand

Like mendicants without regrets

For unpaid debts

Hand in pocket, undecided,

Indifferent if derided.

Among such scattered thoughts as these

We turn the corner of the street;

But why are we so hard to please?

Xx

Give me a room in Paris

the smaller, the better

and it must be winter

and it must be cold

so we can make it hot

too hot to sit still

and the window must be thin

so we can hear the bells

and the power must surge and bubble

so the lights flicker

and the records skip

let the water be weak

so our coffee is strong

so we can stay up late to dance.

Give me this Paris

and I will paint for you

all the truths I know

about magic.

“Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost

I have been one acquainted with the night.

I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.

I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.

I have passed by the watchman on his beat

And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet

When far away an interrupted cry

Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;

And further still at an unearthly height,

One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.

I have been one acquainted with the night

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Xx

My sweet darling,

all these tears,

this hurt,

the pain in your heart,

do not fight it anymore,

it is a gift, you see, to feel this much

with each of these tearful breaths gasped

your soul awakens,

more alive in the pain

than you were in the numb,

you are coming back to me now, my love,

lucid in this darkness—

so cry aloud,

yell,

and fall,

and I will be here waiting

to catch you

when the waking up is done.

the one I love to chase?

The old man smiled

Love her

and the old oak tree I love to climb?

Love her, he said, but leave her wild

I feel in every girl

there lives

a wild pixie,

that if let go,

would run and dance in grassy fields

until the end of the world—

and when that girl grows up,

that pixie hides,

but she’s always there,

peeking out behind old eyes

Today's reading:

Obsession is not love,

infatuation is not love,

when someone ignores you

or treats you poorly, carelessly,

or with indifference

that’s not love—

that’s a lack of love,

for yourself, for trying to fill

your missing pieces with theirs

but when someone is whole

and you are whole

and you act in kindness and benevolence, vulnerability

through strength,

love becomes an exchange

with another person—

and that is

its truest form.

Strange Power, I know not what thou art,

Murderer or mistress of my heart.

Of my most unrelenting foe

Than live---as now I live---to be

Slain twenty times a day by thee.

Yet, when I would command thee hence,

Thou mockest at the vain pretence,

Once loved, alas! forgotten long;

That I would rather die than miss.

“In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Remember” by Christina Rossetti

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of our future that you plann'd:

Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

For if the darkness and corruption leave

A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad.

There is an island I know

I shouldn’t even mention—

it’s a fairy tale, you see

where no one wears shoes

and no one needs to—

the houses are hobbit-like

with grass on the roofs

and the food is fresh from a nearby farm

every morning the tea sits steeping

on long wooden counters

with toast and jams from local berries—

the crickets always crick here

and the birds call, the kind

that make you stop and say,

“Now that is a beautiful song”—

the sun is hot

without a cloud in the sky

and the beach runs out for a mile

in silky white sand

so that when the tide flows back in the afternoon

it heats up, warm as a bath,

when it rains

you build puzzles, and paint, and read

and light fires that crackle

and smell like cedar saunas

and each night, rain or shine,

you drink wine

and listen to records

while you play games—

and sometimes

you’ll lay in long grass

and chase the stars around the sky

heads close together with the ones you love—

each day is the same

you do what brings you peace—

and the wildest part of it all

is the island is real

my toes are in its sand.

On those nights

when the thick snow drifts

through moonlight

and the sky looks like falling stars

close your eyes

look up

tongue out to the gods

and feel the cool ash burn you.

The trees seemed to breathe more at night.

There was a freshness in the air

like the world was being born again.

Steam billowed from the machine

and danced up

mixing with my breath.

I rode on into the black,

leaves scurrying from the tires,

startled by this strange one-eyed beast.

I always wanted to remember these moments,

alone on the road

the smell of wood-burning somewhere,

and wet cut grass covered with tomorrow’s dew.

Fast I’d ride,

deep into the ghostly night,

wind in my face,

eyes screaming tears,

blurring the sky into diamonds,

and my engine,

in its symphony,

became my silence,

a knife’s edge to the numb world

my blissful blurry road.

Daughter of mine—

for your smiles,

for your tears,

for your skinned knees,

and your broken hearts,

for the love you give,

and the love you find.

For whatever you become,

or don’t,

it is far too late,

I love you already,

long before

we ever meet.

I wrote madly in youth.

I wrote because I had so much to see

and so much to say.

I had to share what I saw in the oranges of the desert nights,

the way the drugs made my mind sting,

and the pretty girls spun in the youth and dust --

this dream, everything we’d found,

it was ours,

and would be forever--

it was easy then,

the pen and the paper were two cans on a string to the stars,

and I wrote what they told me

in all the colors they said--

but it’s different now,

the purples aren’t as purple,

the drugs don’t sting,

and the girls dance far away

as if ghosts/shadows of some abandoned town

the string to the stars has worn loose,

and we the children

look at the stars less,

for they lied to us,

they broke their promise---

we did not live forever.

The truth is—magic lives in all of us who choose to look for it.

It lives in the morning in the springtime in Paris, it’s in the smell of the world after the rain, or a stormy afternoon in bed on a Sunday, it’s in warm sweaters and a lovers’ nook, it’s in those sad days that never end, and the happy days that end too soon.

It’s in every spicy margarita or bathtub with rosé, it’s in good books and Spanish beaches, it’s the sun warming cheeks through the clouds, it’s in that quiet forest where the trees sway or the way the lake reflects the moon.

It’s in art; it’s in music, it’s in words. It’s in you and it’s in me and any of us that choose to find it. For the greatest truth about magic… is that it’s true.

She was all freckles and magic,
this girl that lived next door,
pebbles on her window,
and she was suddenly there,
she took my hand,
as the moon pinched at our skin
and my heart beat fast
as her warmth swallowed me up.

It was back through the garden
and the hole in the fence,
along the path I’d made as a boy —
knights in our stories —
a thousand times I’d run this trail
but not with her.

On we ran into the silver-spotted black,
quick-moving feet
along the picket-patched-paths of moon-light,
sprinkling and sparkling
along the mossy floor.

Her face was everything
that young love should be,
and it swallowed me
with every look.

The stars were alive for us
and we shared them
as only young love could.

We ran through moving vines,
into a painted silver meadow,
where we sailed
through the tall milky grass,
like a wooden boat,
through a silver sea.

And there we found our castle,
an old stone house,
where a moss covered chimney
stood alone to spill
the secrets of its life.

So on that sweeping grass we laid,
and spilled our dreams,
as only young love could,
And when we saw a shooting star,
we’d make a wish,
And her face would tumble close to mind,
a freckled nose as soft as snow.

We knew no world
passed what we saw,
for ours was in our eyes.

And so we lay
with shooting stars
and freckled skin,
and promised our love
would last forever,
and so in our forever it would,
there in a castle on top
of blueberry hill
with silver moon rivers
and sailing ships.

and we smiled
as we stared
at the world we made
in the stars
as only young love could.

We all wear masks,
some with makeup
some with smiles
some with wives or husbands
cars or clothes
we hide from the world
and from ourselves
we hide from our truths
behind our eyes
running always from our real
but somewhere there
where truth meets courage
we are waiting to be found
waiting to stand to the world
masks down
and say loudly and boldly
this is us
this is our truth
this is everything real about me
and when that day comes
if it is true
we will begin our lives again
the way they were intended
when the world first
saw our face.

I love those laughs

that come from deep within

the kind that are catching to anyone close

that make your stomach hurt

and cry with tears of joy

the kind that come

when you least expect

where the more you try to stop

the harder it becomes

and even when you think of them now

you smile—

For those are the laughs

of real old

human magic.

There we were making rhythms

Jumping ahead of Earth’s own heartbeat

Setting new times to our universe

And we drank it in like warming wine

We the children

Running to deserts

Pockets full of magic

With whiskey spirits in our souls and our wings

Us few the bold

The brave trodden souls

Tobacco stinging bright our gypsie eyes

Kaleidoscopes reaching fingers through our minds

To stir our colored dreams

Our dusty hearts set aflame

By setting stars and shooting suns

And here the sparks become our loves

And so with them we danced up

Into airless skies and cloudless nights

To make ash angels on moons

And snowflakes of Milky Ways

The boy ran

quick as rain

through grassy fields awake in dew

in moon dipped steps

a summers night

through fireflies

and sparkling stars

a glass jar in hand

little cloud breathes

up to the open sky

and there,

so there at once,

alone in that summer field, she flew

a fairy shone

bright as day

and the stars once bright, dimmed back in crimson

jealous of the way she shone

she, the brightest bright he’d ever seen

so bright she burned, for she loved him too

and he took her gently in his hands

and placed her in the jar

his love

Safe now within his coat —

and back to the town he ran

a thousand laughs caught in his throat

everything he loved so finally his---

and with all the people’s eyes around

he brought the jar out from his robes

and held it high above

his shining prize

His love

--but alas

she was dim

and though she tried

she could not shine so brightly

and his heart fell

and the people turned away—

“But I love her, he said

more than anything I could ever love

why can’t she shine for us?”

and the old man in the corner stood

and walked up close

to whisper something

in his ear

and the boy

looked at the fairy

dimming in the glass

and nodded at the old man’s words

and with the tears in his eyes,

sparkling as diamonds

he ran

faster than he’d even run

through the moonlight steps

through the darkened grass

through the fireflies

and the jealous stars

and there, so there at once,

in the summer field alone

he opened up the glass

and held it to the sky

And slowly and gently his fairy flickered out

And as she flew she burned again

even brighter than before---

and as he watched

and loved her so

the old man’s words

echoed on his lips--

“love her

he said

but leave her wild”.
