Winning Minds: Recent Episodes

Fred LaValley

WINNING begins in the MIND. Enjoy these conversations with everyday people who overcame difficulties and setbacks, or simply recognized how their way of thinking limited their own abilities and opportunities. They did this (and continue doing it!) by learning that success and WINNING start in the MIND and how we think. With WINNING MINDS we can Think better. Do better. Be better.

What is the love of money, anyway? This is my response to the "Money Speech" in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

1 Timothy 6:10 (ESV) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Matthew 6:24 (ESV) “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Deuteronomy 8:18 (ESV) “You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth…”

Ayn Rand was born in Russia in 1905. She was able to move to the US in the 1920s, and she remained there until her death in 1982. In this episode, I am reading a passage from her book, Atlas Shrugged. This book was written to help us contemplate and understand the importance of allowing individuals to pursue their own interests, and profit from their own efforts. This excerpt is known as “The Money Speech” by one of the characters namedFrancisco. In this episode, I am just reading it. I will follow up with my own response to it in a later episode.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it, and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

I delivered this sermon back in April of this year – 2023. This is just a small part of it dealing with the instability of world governments and economies. Everyone was concerned about Russia and Ukraine, but I said, things can easily accelerate, and What if this scenario played out… now we see some of it is. But are you ready for what I called “The Big One”? Thank you for listening. I hope this challenges you and inspires you to make the greatest winning decision: living for Jesus Christ and looking forward to His return.

Written in 1975, but oddly relevant now. Even though technology has progressed and accelerated as much as it has, Howard Snyder's words still ring true in 2023. The "What Is Money" Show and podcast are very popular and informative. But it falls short in diagnosing the root problem with broken money. The root cause is the human condition: sin. And the true and final solution is a conversion experience with Jesus Christ. In this episode I respond to and share my thoughts on the topic and what the Bible says about it.

Thank you for listening to this episode. I hope you enjoyed it and that it contributes to your next WINNING decision.

Recently, my parents moved. And because of the move, I began receiving their forwarded mail. One of the items was a gardening magazine my mom would read. Because I enjoy gardening, I figured I’d check it out.

Interestingly enough, the articles were not about gardening as much as they were about mental health: dealing with life’s ups and downs. Events in the various authors’ lives, and the reflections and lessons learned. This episode is the result of that reading.

I am reading 4 of the short articles from the magazine. It’s called “Green Prints”, and this issue specifically is called, “The Weeder’s Reader.” Each article is separated with the least annoying sound effect I could find, and I give the title of the article as well.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this, and that it contributes to your next Winning Decision, and possibly even inspires you to get into gardening.

Life comes at you 100 miles-per-hour and we get swept into it's current. But what if you could "check out" from it... in a HEALTHY, WINNING way? That is what Rachel LaValley decided to do. She did not like the pace her family was running at, so she took things into her own hands, and into her own home. It is challenging on many levels, but the reward is worth it so far.

What does fair treatment and equality for women look like? What is the value of all the things women, and particularly mothers, do? How much should women be paid? What do we get right and what do we get wrong as a society? These are valuable questions to consider, and hopefully lead to actions and behavior that helps us all WIN in life.

Fall is beginning. That means winter is coming. Nothing new there - it's been happening for thousands of years. But before we move on or start looking ahead too soon, we should slow down and smell the... pumpkins? Maybe not. But we should slow down and think for a while - not about the world or even your nation, but you...personally. What is happening in your life and what future are you headed towards? How have you actually grown so far this year? These questions are easy to ask and read (or listen to), but will we take the time to consider and answer them? This episode is not a conversation. I am reading two articles from the Fall 2022 edition of the Magnolia Journal. I'm reading it because I found them useful and hope you will as well. But also, to use it as a way to ask you: what are you reading? You must have more than your own thoughts in your mind. You must have more content than whatever youtube video or social media channel you follow. There is immense benefit in taking time to read, consider, think. Stop watching screens and READ. Your mind will benefit as well as your body, and it helps you slow down and be present in wherever you are and whatever season of life you are in right now. Thank you for listening to this episode. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

"Wash your hands."

We saw signs and ads everywhere for the past 2 years telling us to do this - something we learned to do when we were 3 years old. I remember visiting a college campus in 2021 and seeing those signs up in the bathrooms. I thought, "Seriously? Our up-and-coming, brightest-minds-of-the-future have to be told do something this elementary?" I'm not making light of the situation we all know too well but simply pointing out that physical hygiene is something we learn as children.

But what about mental hygiene?

In this episode, I am reading an article published by the Amen Clinics. This clinic was established by Dr. Daniel Amen (what a last name, right?), and you can find it in the link provided in the show notes. I have learned so much through their articles, podcasts, YouTube videos and books over the previous 2 and a half years. I thought it would be appropriate to feature this simple, yet very effective WINNING practice in an episode.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this, and that it contributes to your mental hygiene and your next WINNIGN decision.

Today’s guest is Derrick Caldwell – the Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Lanier, the place where he has worked for the last 20 years or so. Throughout his time he has guided, mentored and helped thousands of young men and women. He does this because he sees himself in so many of them. As a young man he so often did not have these resources and relationships. But now, through his care and commitment, there are several well-known men and women he has directly influenced, and many, many more who are having a positive impact on their local communities and families. Derrick Caldwell is definitely a WINNING MIND!

I.C.E.

"Intelligence, Character, and Ethic. Work hard if you want to be respected."

Dropping a new Winning Minds-inspired song!

This track was inspired, originally, by the episode where I read MLK Jr's essays, "The Purpose of Education" (go back and listen to the episode - it's a good one). And then over the next several episodes, the guests continued to provide confirmation and inspiration. So here it is!

Listen and share it with someone who would benefit from it and enjoy the music.

Thank you for listening. I hope it contributes to your next winning decision.

My guest is another WINNING MIND from history:

He was born in Ireland in 1898. His mother died when he was 10, and 1 month later he moved to England to attend school. He later joined the British army and fought in WW1. He was a friend if J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the “Lord of the Rings.” He was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. [He] wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. One of his works is the classic series: The Chronicles of Narnia.

Who is this WINNING…and apparently, WRITING MIND? It is Clive Staples Lewis, also known as CS Lewis.

This reading is called “On Living in an Atomic Age” is just one of the many essays in a book called “Present Concerns.” It is a collection of essays CS Lewis wrote and published during his life. It speaks of an Atomic Bomb, which I think is relevant to us now, but could also be substituted with the threat of pandemic, war, famine, or whatever else seems to threaten us any given year.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this, and that it challenges you to think and live, and that it contributes to your next WINNING decision.

What does success mean to you? Roberto Rivera knew what he wanted but getting there did not necessarily go as he planned. Despite losses and setbacks, he continued working towards success as he defined it. This is part 3 of Coach Rivera’s WINNING story. I strongly encourage you to go back and listen to parts 1 and 2. You will be able to understand and appreciate this part that much more.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

Wrong place, wrong time, or right place, right time? It wasn’t just that, but for Roberto Rivera it was also resilience, relationships, and decisions. He is the only one, out of 13 brothers and sisters, to graduate high school. But then he also went on to graduate from college and even became an officer in the United States Army. Trust me, there is a whole lot more to this WINNING story.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Coach Rivera. If you haven’t heard part 1, go back and listen and then come back and catch part 2.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

He found himself homeless at 16 years old… but two things kept him motivated: he just wanted to, one day, be a good father, and make his mom proud. Roberto Rivera faced more than his fair-share of adversity, but somehow, he made it. He accomplished those goals, and a whole lot more!

This is part 1 of a three, yes 3! part series with Coach Rivera. It’s that good.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

"I am the boys and girls club." No, this is not a late commercial for the "Big Game", but these are the words of Matthew Juwon Jeffries, aka Juice. Born and raised in Gainesville GA, struggling with an unfortunate home-life, Juice ran to the Boys and Girls Club. It became his 2nd home. It was there that men began mentoring him and helping him develop the self-awareness and character that define who he is today. And now his passion is to do the same for other young men.

Alan Griffin is the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team at Gainesville High School. I really enjoyed this conversation with Coach Griffin as we talked about taking advantage of the small opportunities that come your way, because those little ones bring you closer to bigger ones. He also spoke about how games are won and lost; seasons are good, and seasons are bad…but growth and relationships last a lot longer than any particular joy after winning or pain after losing. This is truly a winning conversation about creating memories and teaching lessons.

Adrian Cromwell is an assistant principal at Gainesville High School, a school of nearly 2,500 students. I’ve gotten to know Mr. Cromwell as I’ve recently began mentoring at the high school. One thing I learned from the start is he is very humble, and very visible and active within the student population. He has heart and passion to see our young men and women become successful and overcome the challenges they face in life. I enjoyed this conversation because you can hear his energy as well as observe the strength of character and the WINNING MIND that brought him to where he is today.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Lou Koon, and as it turned out, was recorded AFTER we finished our original recording, which is now known as Part 1. I didn't stop recording as we continued conversing, and I think the conversation is worth sharing. But if you haven’t listened to part 1 yet, go listen to it!

In this episode, Lou and I talk about facing the idea and action of suicide as a Christian. As Lou states, and I agree, we are body, mind, and spirit. And suicide forces us to think about life… after death. I know this could be controversial, but I think it is a conversation worth having, and the questions worth discussing. Because your life is worth it.

Thank you for listening to this episode. I hope it makes you think and ask questions…and above all I hope it contributes to your next WINNING decision.

It was 2009 and his son had just suffered a tragic accident and had to be life-flighted to the hospital… among all the questions swirling through his mind, one of them was also how he would pay for all of this because he had no health insurance… because he recently found himself unemployed. Additionally, because the economy had crashed, there was little hope for him to find employment.

And as he lay in his bed all alone that night, contemplating it all, he remembered his $1 million dollar life insurance payout… Lou Koon, for the 1st time in his life, began to consider suicide.

In this episode Lou shares that painful time, how he survived, and how it led him to dedicate himself to suicide intervention.

Thank you for listening to this episode. This is part 1 of a 2 part series. I hope this helps you, challenges you, and empowers you to help turn the tide in suicide.

This is a simple reading of two versions of MLK Jr's essay, The Purpose of Education. Unfortunately, he never made this a speech or a sermon, so we do not have the privilege of hearing it in his own gifted and powerful voice. But he was more than a voice. He was far more than I could ever describe here. But I'll leave it at this: he was a man with a WINNING mind, and I believe the thoughts, questions and arguments you are about to hear are still very useful and relevant. Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next WINNING decision.

I think I found a dynasty… seriously. I’m not talking about sports and which team is the next New England Patriots, or the Yankees or LA Lakers or something foolish like that… but a family dynasty. One of the definitions of dynasty is “a series of members of a family who are distinguished for their success, wealth, etc.”

Today we have Jason Johnson – cousin of previous guest, Georgia Fay, and therefore nephew of another previous guest, Georgia’s father: Alvin Smith. If you haven’t heard their episode, go back and listen. For real. I’m telling you, these folks, this FAMILY… is a dynasty of WINNERS. And when I say that, please don’t think that just means they show up and collect a trophy without earning it. Winning is not easy glory and fame and confetti falling from the ceiling. It’s fighting through unique challenges, and making up your mind – making, building, renewing, changing, creating – fighting for a mindset that can win.

In this episode, Jason discusses how he has been able to live well despite losing his mother to cancer when he was a young boy.

Don’t sit back and relax and enjoy the show. No. I need you to commit your attention and lean in to this episode.

Thank you for listening. I believe this can help you, or maybe even help you help someone else, make some winning decisions.

When someone you love passes away… its tragic. There’s no way to say it that isn’t painful. But its even more painful when that passing is sudden and unexpected. In today’s episode, Adam Parker shares his experience with grief, depression, anger… a vast array of emotions he worked through and dealt with after his father passed away suddenly from meningitis. If you are in a similar situation, I hope this message helps you heal. It probably won’t take away the pain, but it may help you recover. And if you have not experienced the death of a friend or a loved one, I hope this will help you be able to support someone who has.

Thank you for listening to this episode. I hope it helps you heal and continue winning.

Go get some exercise!

Get some fresh air!

Those are things we are told when we’re frustrated or are trying to figure something out…or we’re driving our family crazy locked inside the house.

We’re told that because it’s been known to help. But it does more than that. Today, we’re joined by Stacey Cothren, an army veteran, mother, and a school counselor. She shares her own story, and how, challenging physical exercise actually makes us smarter and can help you change what you believe about yourself.

This episode is fairly personal for me, as well, and you’ll hear a little bit about this as you listen.

Well, thank you for listening to today’s episode. We hope you enjoy it, and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

Hate speech.

Our society is increasingly vigilant and ruthless about eradicating it from every platform and conversation. However, what about the words you use and the things you say about YOURSELF to YOURSELF!?! Those words and ideas can be much more harmful and long-lasting than whatever anyone else tells you.

In this episode, Rachel LaValley, shares her tormenting battles in her own mind about self-image and comparison, self-hate speech, and how she began WINNING those battles. Still fighting them? Yes. Winning more of them? Yes. Can you do the same? Yes, you can.

Thank you for listening to this episode, we hope it contributes to your WINNING MIND!

What would you tell the 17 year old you? Or maybe you’re only 17… what do you think will be important in your life in 10 years, and what can you do about it today? In this episode, Markel Smith – a young man from Athens, GA, tells us a little bit about his life – the rude awakening he got when he graduated high school, and how that unfortunate situation led him to create and develop a habit of work and improvement in his own life. Don’t sit there and accept everything that happens to you. Sometimes you need to get up and work for a better outcome, a better way of living. That’s what Markel did. This is part two of an earlier conversation I had with Hurl Steward. He’s a man who has overcome a lot of adversity – some due to events beyond his control, and others that were self-inflicted. But he’s winning now! In this episode we discuss his life and mindset in order to win as a husband and father. I know there are a lot of problems in our world, and so much to be frustrated with, but let this be a reminder that you are surrounded by so many good and gifted people. And you never know, you just might be the person someone else needs in order to know there is a better way to think and live…and ultimately WIN!

His parents didn’t speak English, didn’t know American culture or almost anything about this country when they immigrated to the US. Yet he goes on to graduate college with two degrees, get married, start a family… achieve the American Dream!

This is Danny Delgado’s story, and he joins us on today’s episode to discuss something you may not expect – READING! Yes, the exciting world of literature!

Don’t skip this episode. Don’t move on to the next one in your playlist. I know this is not everyone’s favorite subject or hobby…but that’s why this is Winning Minds – our goal is to help you think, change, and grow by sharing what has helped others change, grow, and think. Today’s conversation, hopefully, will do just that for you.

I’ll offer an apology now - the audio from our conversation is a little “muddy” in the beginning, but about 5 minutes into the it we were able to make a change and fix it. You will notice a definite improvement in Danny’s audio.

Alright, that’s enough introduction. Thank you for listening to this episode – I just want you to know, Reading is LIT…. and I hope this contributes to your next winning decision.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Georgia Fay. If you haven’t heard part 1, you absolutely must go back and listen to it! In this episode we continue discussing what you and I allow into our lives. What food we consume, and what content we watch and listen to and how that affects our minds.

In our first episode, Georgia refers to a certain “gift” in her life: her mother… who battled with her own mental health. And today she graciously shares with us, certainly from her personal experiences, some simple yet very helpful advice on how to think about and approach this incredible challenge.

And then we close out discussing my own (and maybe yours too) developing thoughts about, and view of, people we may think are “crazy.” Let’s just say the stigma isn’t accurate or helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to Winning Minds. I hope you find this conversation valuable, and my goal is that it would contribute to your next winning decision.

IT'S 2021!!! Let's celebrate by deciding to make this a WINNING year!

There's no one better to begin it with than Georgia Fay: co-owner of Mental Finesse, a mindset and life-coaching service she and her sister started almost two years ago. But this isn't about her business, it's about her life. Georgia's passion for mental health is deeply personal, is far more than an occupation, and goes way beyond academic concepts and impractical advice.

This is part 1 of a 2 part series with her, so please open your heart and mind to this conversation (and the next), and start WINNING in 2021!

This is a special feature "presentation" but really can be considered part 3 of Alvin Smith's episodes (Make sure you listen to the first two. Did somebody say Trilogy!?). This episode is dedicated to his charity organization, Into-Africa, and the goal is that you would listen and realize you can change. Things in your life can change. Your LIFE can be BETTER if you are willing to think differently and put in the necessary work. Know Better. Do Better. Be Better.

You'll hear a few audio clips we've taken (with permission) to help you understand what Winning Minds and Into-Africa are all about. Another reason for this being “special feature’ is because we've recorded a song for Into-Africa. The “featured” song features Atlanta, Georgia resident Chetan Benson – an amazing voice, but more and most importantly a husband and father.

So…here it goes! A condensed interview-visionary presentation, and a special feature song for Into-Africa are coming atcha right now! It’s time to WIN…and go IN-to Africa!

The goal of Winning Minds is to challenge the way we think, and to offer perhaps a new way of thinking which leads to better living. One of the key people who led me to start this podcast, although indirectly, was Alvin Smith. He was raised in Athens, GA and now is an associate pastor of Door Church in Tucson, AZ and is the Founder and Director of Into-Africa ministries. This episode is part 2 of my conversation with him, and as you listen, I believe you will be inspired to think, live and be better than you ever have before. Thanks for listening to this podcast. At 26 years of age, he and his wife moved to the poorest nation in the world: no running water, no electricity…in his own words, he describes it as “overwhelming poverty.” But what he and his wife started now reaches not only people all over Sierra Leone, but 14 other African nations, and can even be found in Europe. How does that happen? In this podcast, Alvin Smith speaks about how being creative and resilient can enable us to rise above poverty and improve ourselves and our communities. "Where are the men?" This was the cry of Michael Thurmond as he stood before a crowd of a few hundred people in the sweltering sun of a June afternoon in Gainesville, GA. They all came to discuss and rally together to dedicate themselves to fixing, not the problems of the world, not the problems of America, but the problems within their own community. And when Mike began to speak, he spoke with passion from his own life experiences and convictions. In this episode, Pastor Mike takes up that same message. So please listen and consider his words. In a society where we are more connected than ever… well, at least we thought we were until social distancing and quarantining showed us that we need more than 4G and 5G friends. We need real relationships. When he was 13 years old, the healthy, happy life he lived was turned upside down and within a few years became, as he describes it, reckless. In this episode I talk with Javy Gaona about his tumultuous middle and high school years, and what that led to after high school.

But now he is winning, thanks to a critical decision and a new way of looking at accountability and responsibility.

On this episode you going to hear a man who not only made difficult changes while suffering painful criticism, but also a man whose heart is large and humble. Hurl said, “The very same people who were putting me down and talking about me began to call me up and say, ‘Tell me what you did…I want to change my life.’” He also points out personal responsibility, saying, “I had to make some decisions. I had to change some things.” I encourage you to listen to this episode twice because I guarantee you will catch some things the second time, and even more as you continue thinking about his words and story. For me, it was how Good Decisions changed his own mind, which resulted in changing the minds of the people around him.

From age 16 until age 19, his life experience went from a young man in a happy home to a broken home, to a crime statistic.
