My first job out of college was selling advertising for a local radio station.
I loved the station, I loved my coworkers, and I loved getting to drive around the city and talk to prospective clients; but, there was one problem: I was TERRIBLE at my job.
My boss summed it up this way, “Will, you’re able to get a lot of people up to the horse but nobody wants to ride.”
In other words, I had worked for the station for nearly 6 months, and yet I’d not sold a single radio commercial.
Then one day, I began listening to cassettes by a sales trainer and motivational speaker name Joel Weldon and with his help, I learned to change my attitude and my approach so much that within a few months I was the top salesperson.
That’s why I’m thrilled for today’s interview because I get to share with yo the man who made such a difference in my life and my success.
Joel Weldon joins me to discuss tips for success and how people sabotage themselves by complaining about their customers.
You’re going to be inspired and learn some practical tips for better living from one of the all-time greats -- Joel Weldon!

Change is a great dichotomy, we all desire change, and, at the same time, we fear change.
All growth comes from change but we tend to avoid change at all costs.
My guest on this JumpStart is Randy Pennington, a self-described "organizational and leadership nerd", who helps leaders deliver positive results in a world of uncertainty and change.
Randy and I discuss:
Why do both people and organizations struggle to make change work on a consistent basis?
What does it take for us to begin the process of change?
There is a tremendous amount of uncertainty in the world today. What tips can you provide to help us flourish in the face of adversity?

The word “influence” gets batted around a lot these days but what does it mean to be an influencer?
The definition of influence is “The capacity of a person to be a compelling force on the actions, behaviors, and opinions of others.”
We all want to influence others and we also want to be wary of the influence others have over us, right?
Well, you’re going to learn how to do both in today’s JumpStart.
My guest is Stacey Hanke -- the CEO of a highly sought-after consulting and training company mentoring leaders who want to ensure their employees perceive them as an influential leader.
Her 20 years of studying influence across cultures and industries, and leading large corporate teams makes Stacey the perfect fit for organizations large and small that are ready to influence on a consistent basis.
Among other things, Stacey answers:
What are the biggest mistakes individuals make that diminish their influence?
Why do most individuals believe they're more influential than they really are?
What action steps can you take today to begin enhancing your influence virtually, in-person, and during hybrid interactions?

We all know that we can only do one thing effectively at a time, right?
But while we’re doing something -- even things of the highest importance, our minds are strategizing other things we feel we need to be doing.
All of this mental stress on top of an already busy life leads to our feeling overwhelmed.
If you’re ready to stop being overwhelmed, my guest Jerome Wade, CSP (Certified Speaking Professional) explains:

“I won't grow up, I don't wanna go to school, just to learn to be a parent, and recite a golden rule.”
Those were the first words I ever said on stage, actually, I sang those words as a Lost Boy in a community production of Peter Pan.
When we were kids, anything seemed possible.
The sad corollary to that is, as we get older, more things seem impossible--this is called Adultitis.

The existence of evil has been debated for millennia.
My take is that once we label someone or something as evil we negate our ability to see any goodness that exists within that person or that thing.
And it may surprise you to know that the Bible is incorrect when it says “Deliver Us from Evil.”
Ancient texts have shown did the word evil did not even exist in that context.
So, what was the real meaning?

The other day, I was listening to a podcast explaining the Rooney Rule, which was implemented decades ago to increase the number of black coaches in the NFL.
However, since the death of Dan Rooney, former owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the man for whom the rule is named, the Rooney Rule has become watered down because it lacks someone with the moral leadership to enforce it.
Today, African American coaches are no longer gaining more coaching jobs but they’re losing ground because of a shift in values.
What are YOUR values? Not the one’s your parents, friends, or ministers sought to instill in you.

Well, I had just such an encounter the other day with someone sitting next to me on a plane from Seattle.
She got nasty and abusive when I spoke with her and it really escalated.
She was obviously drunk and even drank four additional mini bottles during the first 40 minutes we were in the air.
So, what happened?
I ran the numbers.
And in doing so I gave myself a healthier happier perspective overall.
Let me teach you how to “run the numbers“ to get over a difficult situation…

As you probably know, I am vegan and have been for about a dozen years.
I'm a member of several vegan Facebook groups and attend events for vegans and vegetarians. I am also on a dating app for vegetarians and vegans.
I tell you all of this because I have discovered an interesting phenomenon in the vegan/vegetarian world - “the Transitioner”.
A transitioner is a person who constantly visits a world but never puts down roots.
I have met people who have been “transitioning” to vegetarianism for 30 or more years.
Over 30 Years!
And as a result, they have never experienced the benefits.
I'm not out to try and convince you to become vegan. I am, however, trying to convince you to make a commitment to things that are important to you and to stay with that commitment rather than bouncing back and forth.
It's time to stop transitioning and to commit and in this JumpStart, I'll teach you how…

A long time ago…
In a galaxy far, far away…
A battle has begun in the condo complex where I live and small skirmishes are threatening to explode into full-flown…
CHAIR WARS!
The snowbirds have descended on our complex and are seizing control of the pool chairs and there has begun an uprising among the citizens.
In an ongoing real-life situation, I'm going to share with you how complaining spreads like a virus plus how people use complaining to forward their agendas and to get their social needs met.
Don't miss this story!
It should be a reality show…

Worry serves a purpose.
Worry gets us to think of possible negative outcomes and make plans should they occur.
The problem is, worry doesn’t typically stop once we’ve thought of alternative solutions should problems arise.
Our worrying just continues which is not good because as my friend, Joe Vitale says, “Worry is negative goal setting.”
So how do you combat worry?
With a simple formula: 5 x 2 = 16
I’ll teach you this simple formula for replacing worry with faith in today’s JumpStart…

“I got you something,” my friend said handing me a couple of pages stapled together.
“What is it?” I asked.
“I paid someone to do your horoscope,” he said, a big smile spreading across his face. “Read it.”
As I scanned the horoscope, I was surprised to see how accurate it was to my personality and my life.
“This is amazing!” I said, noticing his smile getting even larger until it became a big derisive laugh.
“Sorry man,” he said, “it's just a black rainbow…I’m just messing with you.”
“A what? Closed quote I asked.
And that's what I first discovered that people can draw us in by telling us both sides of a story that is generic, positive, and also deprecating enough to make us believe almost anything.
You need to beware of Black Rainbows and in this JumpStart, I'll teach you what they are and how to avoid them...

“This was the best Disney trip we’ve ever had,” my daughter Lia said for the umpteenth time as she packed her souvenirs into her suitcase.
“Agreed,” I said. “We got to do all the rides and shows we wanted and the press of crowds and even the ride delays really didn’t get to me, because…”
“Because why?” She asked
“Because I kept repeating something over and over in my head the entire time and it relaxed me, gave me more compassion for others, and helped me enjoy myself more than ever.”
“What was it you kept thinking?” Lia asked.
Then, something really amazing happened.
As I told her what I’d been repeating over and over in my head, a look of SHOCK went across her face because, get this: without communicating our intention we’d both adopted almost the same mantra to repeat while at the Disney parks.
Let me share with you this amazing story of father/daughter connection and, more importantly, this mantra that can relax you during frustration, physical exhaustion, and stress starting now…

As you probably know, I just been gone a week at Disney World celebrating my birthday.
One of the questions that bothered me when I was here was “how many employees does Disneyworld have? “
The answer is - none, zero, zip.
Everyone who works at Disneyworld is a cast member, not an employee.
A person is not given a job, they are cast into a role and they are rehearsed exceedingly well on how to play that role.
Oddly enough, one of the seven dwarfs shows the contrast between Disneyworld and the real world.
Let’s talk about how you can perform the vital role you live at a higher level…

I'm really enjoying Wallace D. Wattles' book “The Science Of Getting Rich.”
This book is a great primer for metaphysics.
The core concept of this and all of Wattles' books is that we live in the universe that thinks.
Not only does every molecule in the universe think, we impact what the universe thinks AND the direction it chooses by what we think.
Think about that!!
You have amazing power you may not have realize you possess or are using that power to your own detriment.
Let’s begin to align your thoughts with the universe and in so doing create the life you want starting now…

If you come to visit me here in Key Largo and I take you for a walk out of the dock, you would see here and there along the ocean bottom what looks like a purplish plant growing out of the reef.
Actually, it's not a plant — — it is/was a Cassiopeia jellyfish.
These amazing animals are actually part of the living reef and spend their lives working to spin upside down and ultimately bury themselves in the ground.
When they die, their bodies harden and literally become part of the reef — — it is nature's way of recycling and constantly upgrading
We are all going to die someday and we are going to leave a legacy.
The way to leave a positive legacy is to bury yourself in a reef that makes sense for you and which makes the entire ecosystem better for everyone.
Let's talk about your legacy and how to create one you are proud of…

Remember the teacher taking attendance in school?
If you were there that day, your response was “present” (although I and the other bratty boys also loved to say “Absent!”).
To be present is to be positive.
And to be negative is to be absent.
To enjoy more and better life we need to spend less time being absent -- that is, dwelling on things we feel are lacking.
When we are present, we are grateful, and when we’re grateful the doors of joy open for us bring more to be grateful for.
Let’s talk about how you can be more present and enjoy your life more starting now.

Once Upon a Time...
Don’t you just love a good story?
The best teachers teach with stories and we vibe with someone only once we know what their story is.
Regardless of what is happening around us, the story we tell ourselves about our circumstances is of our own creation and shapes our reality.
When we begin to tell ourselves better stories, live a better life.
If you’re ready to begin living in your hero's journey then let's start building writing a better story for you...

You need to buy a weighted blanket,” he said.
“What's a weighted blanket?” I asked.
“It's a heavy blanket that you curl up under and it makes you feel safe and secure,” he replied.
So I bought a weighted blanket — and I love it.
For some reason, having weight spread out over our bodies makes us feel comforted like we are being hugged by the universe.
Similarly, we can have an emotional weighted blanket - a way of handling stressful situations so we end up feeling warm and supported rather than anxious and threatened.
In this JumpStart, I give you techniques for creating your own emotional weighted blanket…

Training your mind is like training a dog.
The most important thing is to teach both the dog and the mind to first “sit” and then stay.
When we get the mind to sit it is anchored in the present moment.
The challenge is then to get the mind to stay because it wants to run around like a little puppy.
This is where a mantra comes in handy.
The mantra is like giving the dog a stick to chew on.
The mind has something to come back to and to focus on during mantra meditation.
If you are ready to embrace the simplicity (and the challenge), let's explore Mantra Meditation…

Here's a question for you…
Which is more difficult, meditating with your eyes open or with your eyes closed?
The answer may surprise you...
It is actually more difficult to meditate with your eyes closed because in your field of vision there are a limited number of distractions whereas in your mind, as we all know, there are limitless things to try and garner your attention.
So, if you're looking for a powerful introduction into mindfulness that is also not as difficult, then try sitting or walking zen.
In this JumpStart, I teach you how to get started plus how to add this mindfulness exercise without requiring any additional time out of your day…

Here's a trivia question for you:
What do America's favorite vacation destinations and America's favorite thrill rides both have in common?
Answer: water.
People are drawn to water for vacation. They go to Lakes, the beach, the river--anywhere there is water people are drawn like moths to a light bulb.
The same is true for thrill rides that plunge people down with a big splash or sprinkle them with water to make things seem more real--people love an element of water in their thrill rides.
Perhaps it's because our bodies, our planet, and ideally our diet are comprised of 72% water.
One of the best mindfulness exercises I have found to have drop stress and gain Focus is the Skipping Stone Meditation.
Learn how to relax your mind and connect with water that is around you in the very air that you breathe and the body you are starting now...

Do you remember this old joke that people would post at work? (I've always thought this was funny and a good commentary on life.)
“I am currently out of my office. I have gone to look for myself. If I find myself I will be right back. Otherwise, please wait.”
Few of us are present in our own lives.
We dwell in the past or fantasize about the future.
And, stress is always about focusing on the past or the future.
One of the best ways to ground yourself in the present is to describe what is happening as it is occurring.
Let me teach you this technique as well as an advanced method for grounding yourself instantly in the present moment...

All three of these work wonders in relaxing your mind and your body because they manipulate your breathing in a positive way.
