This Good Friday, Urban Grace partnered with City Hill Church and The Exchange in a multi-church service.
One of the biggest days in the Jewish calendar was the Day of Atonement. Of this day it is written, ‘For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the LORD from all your sins.’ (Leviticus 16:30).
One of the biggest calendar days for followers of Jesus is Good Friday, where we remember that we have been relieved of this burden through this, ‘once and for all’, sacrifice by Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:12). This year, we wanted to make it a special day in the calendar of our local church bodies.
Our three church families want to invite you to join with us (even online) in the celebration of the sacrifice of Jesus and the unity of the local church. Since the word atonement (literally, At. One. Ment.) implies unity, we want to publicly take the opportunity to confess our sin of disunity in the local church in Calgary. Our hope is that as followers of Jesus, we are kickstarting a tradition that will become an important calendar moment to the Church of Jesus in our city.
Consider this your invitation

From November 22nd 2015
Work is what many of us get up in the morning to do, and stay up at night thinking about. A lot of people have a lot of different things to say about work. To some, the perfect life is one without work; while others love their work and couldn't fathom their life without it.
What does God say about work?
God gives all leaders in the church the responsibility to remind people of the faithfulness of God. They are to obey and love God and are to choose daily to follow Him.
When Joshua is about to pass away he gathers and charges the leaders under him and reminds them of this responsibility.
What does loving God and leading people look like in our culture?
God is the god of the impossible, yet at the same time He is a God who is deeply personal desiring all of us to have a deeply intimate relationship with Him.
Is life fair? Is God fair? How do we know?
Join us as we attempt to answer these questions as we look at the story from Joshua 9.
Repentance involves a posture. Repentance is not simply a one time act, but a lifestyle.
Martin Luther, a famous historical figure of the church was quoted as saying, 'All of life is repentance.' This was first on his list of 95 thesis, nailed to the door of the church leaders at the time.
The understanding of the Church at the time, was that repentance was something you did once a week, or month, in an organized confessional manner. Sometimes repentance is taught in a way that it is asking for forgiveness for something you've done wrong. It involves that, but it is not only that.
"I will give grace to the humble and will oppose the proud."
Repenting means that you are wrong, you are going in the wrong direction and need outside help. But it’s a posture, which means that it’s a way of life for you, not simply something you do once a week.
A big part of following Jesus is remembering what He has done.
In our text this week, Joshua is given an opportunity to see a miracle with his own eyes, and at the same time remember what the LORD has done in His people in the past.
This is a necessary reminder for us, because we need exactly that: constant reminders. Remembering what Jesus has done for us and with us will help give us the motivation to trust Him in the future.
Have you ever felt far from God?
Jesus saves the most unlikely people. The story of Rahab the prostitute is a great example of how someone didn’t appear to belong in the story of God, and yet somehow finds herself in the picture at the end.
Fear can paralyze anyone. When it comes to making decisions, we often need courage much more than we need more information.
In the first chapter of the book of Joshua, we see God continuing to answer an old promise through new leadership. Taking the reigns from one of Israel's most beloved leaders, Joshua reminds all the people that taking a hold of God's promises will require great courage in spite of the fact that God promises the battle to already be won.
In the same way, all Christians will require to be courageous as they fight sin and live in obedience to the mission that Jesus has called them to live.
Any organization that wants to keep track of, maintain or improve the quality will often have membership in some sort of form. In this sense, the church is the same. But it's also different. The truth is, we may not really want to talk about this subject, but as a family grows and begins to set the DNA of what a family looks like, this may be of utmost importance.
The church as described in the Bible is global. Capital C church simply means that everyone who believes in the name of Jesus Christ for salvation is part of that Church.
The Bible also describes the Church in a particular geographical region, i.e. a particular city or province. The Bible also describes the church as a local body, meaning an individual church.
Then, within the church we can see that we have individuals and smaller units.
John Maxwell has famously been quoted as saying, ‘Everything rises and falls on leadership.’
Who or what do you follow? There’s something or someone that you give you ultimate allegiance to.
If we were to follow you around for a day, a week or a month, what would the information lead us to believe about who is most important to you, who you gave most allegiance to and who you allowed to be the primary teacher in your life?
Prayer is something we all know about and maybe even do on a regular basis. But what really is prayer? Does God really answer my prayers? How should I be praying?
Today, we're looking at a very important topic: The Bible.
The Bible is very important to us here, in this local expression in Jesus' Church. So, today, we want to take some time to explain and reaffirm why it is so important to us.
If you are new and very skeptical of the authenticity of the Bible, let me say this: The Bible is the most reliable ancient manuscript available today.
The word church as we find in the Bible that is translated ‘church’ is ‘ekklesia’ which if understood in its context means ‘gathered ones’ or ‘called out ones’.

This text is an unusual one, and for many people, they simply look over the text and think, ‘What could a list of workers possibly apply to us today?’ It’s a good question. Yet the story shows that leaders are needed in every capacity reminding us that there is always something for us to do when we work for Jesus.

The first step is always developing a heart for the city Jesus has placed you in.

Culture has placed such a high emphasis on sexual orientation we have come to a point where we must say something, or risk being viewed as indifferent or ashamed of what the Bible says of the issue.
Many of us see our sexuality as core to our identity. The Bible says that Jesus is the core of our identity. Your sexuality does not define who you are; ultimately Jesus does.
The truth is, the way Jesus defines friendship, you can't really force friendships, but you can be a friend. To be friendly, is to act like a friend would before you really are a friend.
This issue of singleness is complex, and you'll notice that it impossible to talk about one issue, without a host of questions about another area come up.
Understanding singleness is impossible without understanding what we think about friendship and marriage, which then leads to misunderstandings and the questions about sex and same sex and how all those things come into play.
