Are you building an ecommerce business? Each Thursday, Kevin Sanderson shares what he has learned going from a full-time corporate job to being an independent, full-time ecommerce entrepreneur. Follow along as Kevin shares what he has learned selling on Amazon in ten different countries and brings on subject matter experts to help you build an ecommerce business that you can be proud of.
As we head into a new year, it can be a great time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the new year.
When analyzing your year, it is important to take a deep dive into what worked and what didn’t, especially with your numbers.
After all, we are running a business to make money and to help discuss some important things to think about with having a more profitable business, I am excited to welcome back Tyler Jefcoat from Seller Accountant.

Managing PPC campaigns on Amazon is one of the most effective methods to drive sales. If done well, it can be extremely profitable, but if not done well, it can also be an absolute drain on your profits.
The other challenge is that as you grow, it can become incredibly time-consuming, but the good news is that there are many options to help you run your ad campaigns more effectively (and free up your time to focus on other important activities).
In this episode, Michael Erickson Facchin from AdBadger comes on to discuss different ways that sellers can better manage their ads.

Do you have the right price for your product? It can have a huge effect on your profitability and how many units you sell. Sounds easy enough to pick your price and make sure that you have the margins leftover (and the market will support people buying at that price).
The reality is that there is a lot that can go into successful pricing strategies, and I am excited to welcome Ali Babul from Trellis to discuss.

One of the hardest parts of selling on Amazon is figuring out what to sell. Many people think that you must fall either in the brand owner or the reseller camp. Over the last few years, Amazon has thrown a few curveballs at sellers with inventory restrictions and sometimes conflicting metrics with FBA inventory. Going into the Q4 of 2022, many sellers have had their allowable inventory levels cut by half (or more).
This has made looking into additional fulfillment options more important. I had the opportunity to be on a panel about inventory and logistics at Surge Summit with my guest, Manish Chowdhary.
Manish runs a network of warehouses that can provide seller-fulfilled prime and could be a great potential option for some sellers. At the time we recorded this episode, we didn’t know Amazon was going to cut inventory restock levels as much as they did…

One of my favorite tools is Airtable. It is a database system that can be used for a ton of stuff and can be customized and integrated with many other applications. Pretty much if there is not an existing software tool to do something you want, you can find a way to do it in Airtable.
In this episode, we welcome Barak Almog from Seller Frame to the podcast because he is an absolute whiz with Airtable. We geeked out on Airtable, but if you are a beginner to this software tool, don’t let our enthusiasm intimidate you. It is a simple program to use!

Having spent several years in the insurance industry, I know that insurance is one of those subjects that no one likes to talk about (but they need to).
It is an uncomfortable topic because it is confusing and focuses on a bunch of what-ifs and potentially bad things that you hope never happen.
With that said, I have seen how people have been saved by their insurance policy when something goes wrong, and others who wish they had the right type of insurance and had to shell out enormous sums of money out of their own pocket.
In eCommerce, you can get a policy, and the insurance company will gladly take your money. BUT if the policy isn’t structured correctly, you could be rejected if, God forbid, something bad happened that caused you to need to actually use your policy.

It can be challenging to stay on top of your Amazon PPC campaigns. There is so much to stay on top of, and information coming from several different reports.
Plus, there are so many screens to click through just to do simple tasks like adding a keyword or changing a bid.
At one point, I was about ready to give up on PPC until I discovered bulk files. They have the information you need in one place, and once you get the hang of them, they can cut it down to just a fraction of the amount of time it takes for the campaign manager. (And it is a completely free tool)

Overtime, many sellers find that catalog management on Amazon is one of the most underrated topics in this business. What is in some of the fields (that you might not even know about) can have a huge effect on how the algorithm understands your listing. This in turn can have a major effect on your ranking, and can make a difference if Amazon suspends a listing because the algorithm suddenly thinks the product is in a category with heightened compliance requirements.
And as you grow, it can become tedious making changes to listings in Manage Inventory when bulk sheets can make the process quicker (once you know how to use them).
That is why I am excited to bring on Vanessa Hung to talk about how you can keep a clean catalog and some tips for using bulk files.

One question I get frequently is about bookkeeping. Starting out you can pull a couple of reports and throw them on a spreadsheet and be ok (probably).
As you get bigger and add more channels, your business becomes more complex, and so does the amount of time you have to spend on bookkeeping (especially if you have multiple currencies).
I have found that unless you have a passion for accounting and have an intimate knowledge of bookkeeping software, bookkeeping is one of those things you should outsource to someone who know what to do.
Oftentimes sellers will work with someone who maybe understands bookkeeping but they don’t really understand ecommerce, and then they end up asking me for recommendations.
I’ve used the same bookkeeper for over three years, and my CPA has been happy with their work (and he would definitely tell me if he wasn’t).
Good bookkeepers can be hard to find (especially that understand this business). That is why I am excited to bring on Siddhartha Havelia and Manvi Aurora who do the bookkeeping for my business.

It occurred to me that this model could also be great for ecommerce sellers as well. So in this episode, I brought on the host of the Virtual Summit Podcast, Dr. Mark T. Wade to discuss the virtual summit model and how you could apply it to your business.

Sometimes we hear some big numbers on Amazon, and it can be inspiring about what is possible. What is more impactful than just hearing the numbers is knowing the story behind the numbers, and what you can apply to your business.
In the latest episode of the podcast, I am excited to bring on Mike Begg. We had shared the “stage” together at a virtual event, and he has an impressive story. He has a ton of experience not just with his own business but also has an agency that oversees Amazon sales.
Over the years, he has overseen $500 million in sales on Amazon…. Yes, you read that right, about a half of a billion dollars.
We had a discussion about what works on Amazon. You’ll definitely want to listen.

When selling on Amazon’s international marketplaces there are some hidden costs with managing foreign currencies. With the right strategy, you can keep more profits in your business, but with the wrong strategy you could be losing out on money (and no one even tells you).
To walk through strategies on international currencies for ecommerce sellers, in this episode we welcome Ryan Cramer from PingPong Payments.
We also discussed some of Amazon’s recent important changes with their policies on Payment Service Providers...

The great thing about the internet (and especially Amazon) is that you have the ability to get your product in front of a lot of potential customers.
Unfortunately, you don’t get to speak with them. Your listing has to do the talking for you.
That is why it is critical that your listings sell the product. Otherwise, potential buyers could continue looking for another product instead of adding yours to their cart.
In this episode, Lauren Gonzalez comes on to share tips on how visual design elements can influence higher conversion rates (and more sales) for your products.

Selling on Amazon’s international marketplaces like Germany, France, and Italy can be a great way to increase the sales of the products you already sell.
The challenging part is that you must communicate with the customers by translating your listings in a different language that you might not be familiar with.
To better understand how to get a good translation, I am happy to bring on Jana Krekic from YLT Translations, who specializes in helping Amazon sellers reliably translate listings specifically for Amazon customers in Europe.

Physical products are a great way to build a business, and in the online world, it almost seems like people are either physical products (ecommerce) or digital products people.
But the reality is that you don’t have to be one or the other… You can be both.
It can be easy to think that digital products only work to make money online or weight loss niches. That isn’t the case, and your niche could have the opportunity to offer a digital product (like a guide or course) that complements your current catalog of products.
My guest in this episode has a successful business selling digital products about a certain type of plants… succulents.

Expanding on Amazon’s international marketplaces is one of the best ways to grow your sales using the products you already have and your existing Amazon marketing skills. Most people tend to look in North America and Europe for their growth (which makes sense because the language and culture is similar, if not the same).
However, some markets may find success in Japan because it is one of Amazon’s most established and largest markets.
What is scary about Amazon FBA Japan is that the culture is different, the language is not at all similar to English, and many software tools don’t work there.
With that said, there are often opportunities where there is confusion (or people think it is hard). That is why I am excited to have John Cant from Rising Sun Commerce on to talk about whether or not Amazon.co.jp is right for your business and how you can get started….

Ever tried a tool and thought.. Oh wow… that’s unique.

Want to grow your sales from paid ads while also decreasing your costs? If you do, you are not alone. PPC is one of the best ways to grow your business, but can also be one of the biggest ways to waste money if not done properly.
Over time, I have noticed that episodes related to PPC are often some of my most downloaded episodes. It is definitely a hot topic because just when it seems that everything is going smoothly with PPC, something happens and everything changes.
That is why it is so important to understand how you can best take advantage of the opportunities to grow your sales with paid ads while also decreasing your cost.
Because it can be such a pain point for people, I brought together 13 paid ad experts as part of the PPC Mastery Summit.
I got the chance to pick the brains of an all-star group of paid ad experts who have literally generated 100’s of millions of dollars in revenue from paid ads they have overseen.
The summit has 14 speaker talks and well over 13 hours of content. The speakers were all very giving of the knowledge and shared lots of actionable golden nuggets that you can implement into your campaigns.
In this episode, I will walk you through 5 of my takeaways from the summit that you can put into your campaigns to raise your PPC game to the next level to grow your sales and minimize your costs.
You can dive in a little deeper into your PPC learning by downloading my “cliffnotes” version of what I learned from all 14 speaker talks.

We live in a litigious society, and as a business owner, you could be in a position to get sued if, God forbid, someone is injured from using your product.
This makes having the right type of insurance so important. Plus many marketplaces like Amazon and Walmart require insurance.
In this episode, I welcome insurance agent, Michelle Love, to come on to talk about what ecommerce store owners need to know about commercial liability insurance for their business.
Not only is Michelle an experienced insurance agent, she also has a lot of experience as an ecommerce store owner on Amazon and eBay.

It may feel like everything has been upended in the world with the coronavirus global pandemic.
Just in the last week so much has changed, and as I write this, there is so much uncertainty over what tomorrow holds.
Today’s episode is about overcoming adversity. When I recorded this interview, I had no idea the changes we would see in the world because of the coronavirus, and because of everything that is going on in the world, it is especially fitting to hear my guest’s story about how a literal bomb went off in his life.
He had to completely change the direction of his life and head towards a goal with no guarantee of success. I hope this interview inspires you to reach for your goals, especially during the hard times.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly with all of your transactions. With that said, anyone who has been in business for more than a day knows that situations come up that do not go as plan.

Whether you are selling something on your own website or on Amazon (or both), it is critical to get people to see your offer. If people can’t see your offer, they won’t get the chance to buy it (and you won’t make a sale).
That is why it is important to test different ways to bring traffic to your offer.
In this episode, I am excited to bring on Spencer Haws. He has been a full-time online entrepreneur since 2011, and once owned an ecommerce business selling on Amazon, which he has since sold.
He currently owns dozens of niche websites primarily monetized by display ads and Amazon Associates.
What I find fascinating about Spencer is that he understands search engine optimization (SEO) and how to get traffic from Google.
Because he monetizes his sites with Amazon associates links, he understands what motivates influencers, and in the interview he brings up a strategy to get influencers to link to your Amazon listing that I have never heard before.

Building your own ecommerce store is tough. Sure it sounds great having your own store and not paying commissions to a marketplace or having to confirm to a strict terms of service. Plus you get to control the customer experience.
The challenging part is that you have to figure out your own design and how to lay it out. AND unfortunately, you have to get people there.

What works when selling on Amazon? That is the magical question.
Everyone wants to know what the latest hack or trick is to build their business.
Strategies and tactics are great, and Amazon is an ever changing marketplace. That makes it critical to stay on top of what the latest and greatest ways are to build your business.
With that said, tactics, hacks, or whatever you want to call the latest shing object strategy are more likely the decorations in the house.
What is most important is the foundation. Without a solid foundation, the rest of the house could topple over at any minute.
In this episode, Jeff Lieber from Turnkey Product Management and host of the Playbook for Amazon podcast comes on to share some of what he has learned of how to setup your business for long term success on Amazon.
Jeff’s clients combine for over 8 figures in sales. That means he gets to see a lot of what works (and what doesn’t).
We talk about some important pieces like listing copy, product images, and video, and then we get into some of the latest tactics and new features on Amazon that are working today.

Selling on Amazon in the US (and the UK) is a great opportunity, and in this episode of the Maximizing Ecommerce, I am excited to have Michael Veazey.
Since Michael lives just outside of London, he has a unique perspective on selling on Amazon (from outside the US) and how things work within the UK.
Michael started as a music coach and branched into selling on Amazon, built his own brand, and now runs a mastermind for successful Amazon sellers, and we talk about what works to be successful on Amazon these days.
“Imperfect action beats perfect inaction everytime”
Oftentimes we overcomplicate things, and in his perspective, VAT is simpler to understand than the complexity of US sales tax. I can certainly see where he is coming from.
We talked about how starting in international marketplaces does not have to be a huge risk. You can start with small portions of the orders you are already placing as a test.
His take is that adding another Amazon marketplace is considerably less work than sourcing new products (and less risk)
One of the differences he notices between the US and the UK is that the UK less competitive and he explains why he believes you can go after broader markets than in the US.
A benefit of selling on international marketplaces is that by adding diverse revenue streams, you can make the numbers work out so that your product is a success because it will help you sell through your inventory faster than just remaining in the US.
Hire people to fill in the gaps where you are not sure what to do and shorten the learning curve.
Michael has found that a common trait of successful sellers is that they tend to take calculated risks (not gamble and waiting on the sidelines).
His biggest takeaway is to go after markets (or sub/niche markets) that you can dominate. The key to success is never enter a fight you can’t win.

Selling on Amazon’s international marketplaces is one of the simplest (yet overlooked) ways to grow your business if you are already selling on Amazon.
In simple terms, there are three ways to grow your business:
All of these ways of generating sales should be part of your overall growth strategy. In my experience, one of the simplest ways to grow your sales is to offer your existing products to customers on Amazon’s international marketplaces.
This international strategy gives you access to new customers (and new sales) that you would not get if you did not sell in those international marketplaces.
What holds people back from doing this is not understanding the process of how to get started and fear of foreign currency (and foreign governments).
In this episode, I walk through the steps to help make the process of launching in another country more simple. Plus my goal is put to rest some of the doubts of selling internationally.
At the end of the day, offering your products in another country is good for not just you but also the people who have now access to buy your product and Amazon because you are helping make their catalog bigger.
Just remember this…. If you do the things others will not do, you will get the results others can’t have.
Definitely listen to this episode to learn more about how to sell internationally, and if you would like to continue the learning, get access to our exclusive training.

In this episode, we talk about how Trent Dyrsmid built a 7 figure wholesale business using effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). While building this business, he delegated himself out of the operation within six months when the business was in growth mode.
Trent attributes much of his success on his focus on working “on” the business instead of “in” the business.
Part of his success, he setup processes for the business to run on autopilot by documenting what he was doing along so that he could delegate that task and wouldn’t have to do it again.
Trent’s equation for Effective Processes:
2D Equation = Documentation and Delegate
The key to success with writing good SOP’s for your business - have steps that include the what to do and how to do it.
Keep steps short. Better to have a lot of short steps than have a LONG step with lots of instructions (which could be better broken down into more steps).
These are just a few of the tipa we discussed in the interview. Hit me up on social to let me know what takeaways you got from this interview...

Many sellers, including myself, are so focused on growing a brand that we lose sight of the potential for selling other people’s products.
To help us explore the opportunity selling with the wholesale model, I am excited to have on Dillon Carter.
The upside of selling wholesale is that it is fairly simple and the barriers to entry are low. The bad news is that it is easy for others to get started as well, and unfortunately, many suppliers don’t want to work with Amazon sellers.
Dillon comes on to share share tips for getting approved for wholesale accounts. He is a self professed automation geek, but his advice to go old school and pick up the phone and call. Doing what doesn’t scale can be what gets you to learn what works.
In addition to share a lot of great information on the wholesale model, Dillon shares his tips on mindset. One of his biggest cautions is in chasing after “enough information” when the missing ingredient is experience (not information).
We also discuss strategies for getting the Buy Box (might even help get more impressions to your private label listings as well).
