How To Live Slow is a podcast for women to find an antidote to the stress, overwhelm and clutter that comes with being a modern mum and instead claim our role as matriarch of an intentionally slower family. Filled with deep conversations that are part personal development, part practical ideas for change and all living slow, because like anything worth doing, the ideas are simple but not always easy to do.
In this episode: * The backstory of Sharyns book * Of all the themes in the book - music, identity, racism, sexism, neurodivergence/PTSD, expressing rage - Sharyn shares which felt the most important/hard to write about. * Sharyn has copped a lot of flak for being 'angry'. We talk about that and how it relates to their identities and treatment by others. Sharyn shares advice for women who fawn out of the rage response. * Looking forward to in your maga and crone years and embracing the slow burn of life. * Sharyns experience of being late diagnosed neurodivergent

How do you work from home without recreating work AT home? That’s what today’s episode with our guest Stacey Marie is all about.
Many of us mums find ourselves being the flexible parent - which often means we work from home or start our own businesses to be more available for our families and create a lifestyle that suits us. If you’re the flexible parent while also being your own boss it can be an interesting dance to play with.
Stacey has worked from home for quite a few years now and she has teenage daughters who’ve done significant stretches of home learning in amongst it all. She’s someone I look up to and vibe with as she’s really self driven and has a lot of wisdom about being very productive in the time that suits you.
This is episode one in a mini series I am hosting in January where we look at some alternative lifestyle options you might like to consider. Lets go beyond New Year’s resolutions and make change over the long term that benefits us.

Living according to the seasons has huge benefits for women particularly. I hope you’ll be encouraged to give it a try.

My guest today is someone I’ve learned a lot about 'slow living' from.
Emma is the founder of the incredibly insightful blog "Simple Slow Lovely", she is a mum of two, lives in New Zealand and is a highly sensitive introvert who loves helping others like her find strength and joy through boundaries and self exploration.
Emma joins me today for a chat about how she does 'slow', her ideas for creating a slow family dynamic and why so many of us struggle with slowing down. Surprisingly, it’s not just capitalist guilt that causes us to struggle with slowing down, but also the deeper emotional impact of our childhood experiences that can keep us on the busy train.

There are those times we discover a healing modality that has such a profound impact on changing the quality of our life that we can’t help but share it with everyone we know. That’s what happened with my guest today, Gemma Mercer from Mummy Me Time.
Gemma discovered reflexology at a time when she needed a serious overhaul on the way she took care of herself. Relaxing wasn’t a thing she knew how to do - most of us don't right? Enter reflexology, and life changed in many ways for her.
At Mummy Me Time, Gemma encourages mums to normalise self care. That’s what we discuss today.

It’s time to meet my coach!
Jo Bendle is the founder of the "Meant For More" movement, she's had a big impact on the love I have for my business and my commitment to seeing "How To Live Slow" have as big of an impact as possible.
Jo is a unique activator and even though you could call her a ‘productivity coach’ she does more than just giving you the practical tools to get yourself organised. Infact, her framework for that is relatively light - which appeals to my slow and simplified living philosophy!
Working with Jo has taken me deeper into the mindset and purpose of productivity, so I can hands down say "I am now more productive than I’ve ever been while also living the slowest family life". Working through the reasons you procrastinate and getting into the right frame of mind means sitting down to work and actually getting things done - and that means a LOT more time for the other side of life!

Mothers are always trying to find ways to balance everything on their plate. We wear many hats and play lots of roles. We beat ourselves up when we inevitably fail at the impossible task of being everything to everyone, but what if there was a reason outside of ourselves as to why it’s hard?
My guest Kelly Thistlethwaite from Yorkshire Yogi joins me today to discuss this reason. It’s called the inner split and it’s one of the foundational concepts of matrescence. In case you are new here and not sure what matrescence is, it’s the whole person transformation we experience when we move from woman to mother.

Kath Baquie is a physiotherapist and founder of FitNest Mama. We connected in Instagram and decided to record a podcast together to discuss her perspectives of doing less in the postpartum stage for physical recovery and my perspective of why slowing down is essential for wellbeing.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, have a to-do list as long as your arm or just craving a life of doing less, this episode is a must listen. Whether you’re pregnant, a new mamma or finished having babies and in the thick of school run, playdates and extracurricular activities, this episode is all about slowing down and tuning in to what you really want life to be about.
We discuss ditching the hustle of modern life, learning how to say no and understanding what your priorities are so you can start shaping your life into something that’s enjoyable instead of stressful. Discuss the importance of rest and why it’s important for our whole lives, not just throughout pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood.
We all know what it’s like to feel busy, stressed and overwhelmed. Our modern lives aren’t geared towards rest and yet it’s the very thing our minds and bodies crave. So, sit back, unwind, and slow down as you listen to this episode.

There are also similar things we do that keep us busy and stop us being time and energy prolific.

Women are socially conditioned to self-silence, denying our needs for the benefit of others. When we become mothers, this can become very problematic, as Allison Hillery has learned all too well.
Allison has supported children and families with evidence based programs in particularly around emotional regulation so she has seen first hand the effects on families when mums self-silence. In her own motherhood experience, the issues of self-silencing manifested as postnatal depression.
She joins me today to share some tools on recognising, honouring and moving through our self-silencing.

Today I’m reflecting on the year that was and how things have changed over the first 12 months of How To Live Slow.
A Huge thank you to all of my lovely guests, listeners and subscribers for being here over this time. It’s truly a privilege and an honour to be here with you, supporting each other in learning How To Live Slow.
It’s been so beautiful to see that we are all the same - the circumstances of our lives might be different - but we all feel that deep desire to love and know another, and be loved and known.
What I’ve realised that almost all of life’s problems can be solved by slowing down a little and allowing time to work its special magic.

The Perfect Mother Myth - it’s a construct of patriarchal motherhood that keeps us in martyrdom.
That’s why, I’m really excited about today’s episode as it’s going to be so helpful to so many mums.
My guest today is Louise East a certified Mindset and Life Coach and fellow Matrescence Facilitator. She works with overwhelmed mums who are ready to release guilt and perfectionism and live a calmer, more intentional life that makes their heart happy.
Louise shows us that it is possible and valuable to release yourself from the binds of the perfect mother myth.

She aims to lead by example in her parenting and life and totally acknowledges that we are all perfectly imperfect and doing the best we can.
Our chat today is all about the benefits of slow parenting and what this looks like in Bec’s own life.
“Slowing down, being mindful and creating s p a c e in life and in parenting is so important to me. It’s what allows our family to live in flow.”

There's a quote I've seen that goes something like "Your body whispers to you but if you don't listen, it will shout". My guest today, Cerenity Incze, has earned the wisdom from this lesson in huge ways. After receiving a diagnosis of Hashimoto's, an autoimmune thyroid disease, she and her family made a drastic move to declutter their lives, move countries and create a lifestyle that promoted healing and connection.

My guest today is psychologist and hypnobirthing practitioner Rebecca Black who I invited on the show to talk about maternal rage. If you've felt that simmering feeling of anger like you're on the edge, a sense of frustration and a tinge of resentment, you're likely experiencing the completely normal feeling we lovingly call mum rage.
The problem with mum rage is that we hold this story that a "good mother" is always calm and level headed. So when we explode, it's immediately followed by a sense of shame and failure. It's because of the good mother stereotype that we can't speak up about our feelings, compounding the problem.
Rebecca and I want to do our part to normalise feeling a bit ragey sometimes, because parts of motherhood are hard. So we started this conversation to share whats normal, and what might mean you need extra support - and we want to normalise seeking that support when you need it, shame free.

What is a matriarch? And what has that got to do with slow living? In this episode we define the matriarch and learn how we can become more of the matriarch of our family, develop our self worth so that we don't fall into the energy of martyrdom. Martyrdom is when we get stuck in the negative emotions and experiences of motherhood like resentment, overwhelm, exhaustion and sacrifice.

Erin Bourke is the founder of The Parents Hub, a space in Melbourne for parents and carers who want to be part of a community and feel supported in their parenting journey. I invited her on the podcast to talk about the importance of in-person connection and how to reconnect after the socially distanced year that was 2020. Many of us, even the most socially extroverted, have found ourselves feeling a little socially awkward after periods of lockdown or isolation due to coronavirus.
Erin shares what we can do to move past that and find ways to start feeling good about social connection again.

This episode takes a slight detour from the usual mum life topics I talk about but I think you'll agree that it's related.
I worry about our future. What will life be like for our kids? Not just their mental health, job prospects or freedom of movement but also what kind of climate will they live in? Have we done enough to mitigate climate change? And what can we do now to help slow it further?
Today's guest is Louise Tarrier, the CEO of Carbon Positive Australia.

There are some times in life that I believe slow living is more important than others. Early motherhood is one of those times. We are naturally called into the bubble of family life, the bubble is where we rest, transform and connect. A few years later, with one or multiple kids in tow, we emerge anew, ready to get back into society in a wider way.
The problem is, it rarely goes that way. Instead, early motherhood becomes the busiest time of our lives, whether we return to work or not. This is the problem of a patriarchal, capitalist culture. It doesn't value slowing down. And so instead of emerging, we get stuck. We get resentful, exhausted and overwhelmed. We become martyrs, not matriarchs.
Let's change that?

Last week I shared how I set a longer term goal of changing my core beliefs around the capabilities of my body after having kids. This week I've invited Nikki Knieriem from Mum Me Fit Time to talk about how to change the way you see fitness or weight loss goals from the perspective of a personal trainer.

This year I've been doing some personal experiments. I've honed in on my priorities and set long term goals in alignment with those. But I've also broken those goals down into individual steps that are enjoyable in their own right.
One of my core priorities is personal growth but before this is possible, I needed to change my subconscious beliefs and choose a new one: I can become better.
Years of raising my babies has left me depleted and running on empty so instead of setting myself an impossible goal of "running x distance and time" I realised I had to start with the basics. I needed to trust in myself, prove I'm not a procrastinator, overcome my perfectionism, learn to receive support and really prioritise rest, sleep and other nourishing behaviours to energise and heal my body. We then build from there.
I knew it was going to take incremental changes over a period of time.

Today we are talking about 10 ways to slow down your life as a mum. When life is full of commitment, chores, responsibilities, and obligations, there’s not much capacity for us left to enjoy life or to find the time and enjoy the things we really want to be doing. It is my belief that life actually meant to be indulged in. It means being in the moment. 2020 hasn’t really gone as anyone has planned it. This year we can commit to more slowness in your life.

Today we are talking about how to balance your roles as a modern mum. We love our kids but we have other things we need and want to do. There is beauty in this time of life and this is the time we don’t want to be wishing away because it’s only for a short time and one day this will be the days we will look back on as being some of the best days of our lives. But at the same time we have to work for money and other goals and desires so there’s a certain amount of time we need to dedicate to things we love and being a mom - what’s the best way to do that?
