Norma shares Stacy's story and gives listeners an insider's look at what happened on October 28, 2007, when she found out that her sister-in-law was missing. Many, including Norma, believe that Drew Peterson, Stacy’s husband, killed her. Norma talks about some of the domestic violence and warning signs of abuse between the couple leading up to Stacy’s disappearance.
Stacy’s story then inspired the late Susan Murphy Milano, a domestic violence awareness advocate, to create an Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit that allows victims to be able to assemble evidence of their abuse and keep it as a digital diary. When Louanna was 8 years old, she was diagnosed with a rare cancer. She underwent surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City. Although the surgery was a success, she was left with a scar on her leg that she now considers a badge of honor. In her lifetime, Louanna has earned multiple titles in cheerleading and has never let her cancer stop her from succeeding! She has always maintained a positive attitude and is a great example of a young person who was able to take a bad situation and use it as inspiration and motivation! Nearly 4 million victims a year are served by more than 4,000 local and state victim service agencies funded by VOCA. Here in Connecticut, VOCA serves as a resource and an advocate for many victims of crimes. VOCA also supports victim assistance for those involved in the federal criminal justice system, including survivors of terrorist acts. Joy talks about how AJ’s addiction progressed and the warning signs that she saw and tried to deal with along the way. Joy has turned her tragedy into advocacy, becoming a spokesperson for opioid awareness and sharing her son’s memory as part of Today I Matter, a traveling poster project that displays the lives of young people lost to overdose in the Northeast.
