“This could be the real thing. There is no where else but right here right now.” Over Memorial Day weekend at Movement 2015 (or as I prefer to call it Detroit Electronic Music Festival), my cousin filled me in on all that Giorgio Moroder represents, is credited with, and is still producing. Like many people my generation and younger, I just didn’t realize all that he has accomplished and has influenced. So I have been obsessing over his music ever since. The coincidence is I was already planning this disco revival thing for my Pride gig but things were just not jelling. My spirit guides must have channeled Giorgio through my cousin because everything for this set fell into place better than I had anticipated. So enjoy this set as a tribute to Giorgio, a shout out to Dimitri From Paris and a preview of my summer 2015 tracks. In case you didn’t know that Love and House are timeless dancefloor partners, this set will explain it all.

It is never easy to plan a set for a crowd that doesn't know House. Preparing for this very situation, I decided to go headfirst and develop my own set of remixed pop songs. It helps us both explore our love for others and find personal refuge. A great House DJ can deliver both experiences to the dancefloor simultaneously. I know I often make comments on how much I love my latest set. I guess if I didn’t I wouldn’t post them. But this one offers a unique mix from so many different periods in House Music’s short history: “Make it Right,” “What a surprise,” World Go Round”.... (If I listed them all in this description it would become the set list.) Of course I always add my touches to make the tracks work for me (and you).

“Playin’ my music helps me from feelin’ down.” Every summer I fall in love all over again with the Lake Michigan coast and beaches. I believe it is one of a few places in the US where you can watch truly watch the sun set with it slowly fading away as it inches off the horizon. It is such a sight. When i am in the presence of such an awesome sight, I feel so small in comparison to sun and lake but it's so magnificent that I feel on top of the world. This is how I feel at a great House party. Just one in the crowd but at times I feel the music is being played just for me. In Michigan the summer sun doesn't go down until 10, serving as the best lighting design for a groovy House party on the beach.

I love this set. It draws up some of the classic progressive tunes from my early days on NYC dancefloors and intertwines them with new sounds. I had a great time playing at Kalamazoo pride 2 weeks ago. Not only did I get to play for my first drag pageant, I also played from Manila Luzon and Lady Bunny. The two day event culminated with a fierce performance by Niki Harris! I'm always happy to play that event.

“All my tears had been wiped away when you gave me love.” I use House Music as my own form of therapy. At the time I mixed this set, I didn’t intend for it to serve this purpose. But I can honestly say that when I listened to it, it kicked my ass. The surprise was track 4, “Happy,” by Ferry Ultra and Gwen McCrea. Suffice to say that I’m happy with this one. So if you’re down and feeling as if things aren’t great, just remember to take your problems to the dancefloor.

It’s great to play an event where no one knows they like House Music, and then come away thinking that the music provided the perfect soundtrack to the evening. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of playing in the Imperial Ballroom of Grand Rapids’ famed Grand Plaza Hotel. (Thanks to the Michigan Nonprofit Association for the great opportunity!) “We…gotta work this thing out till you…know what I’m about.” This music feels like music just right to accompany a dark winter storm. Winter is a fun time to go out dancing. I love the feeling of walking inside of a club out of the cold winter weather just as the dance floor is just heating up. In NYC, the Roxy was never heated. If you arrived too early, the cavernous industrial space would be quite cold. Eventually, the hundreds of bodies would heat the place up. It could be below zero outside and be steamy, sweaty hot on the inside. So go ahead and dive right in…the sweaty bodies are waiting.

I believe that Gospel House can get (almost) any white boy to shake his booty. It's that good. Back in the day I spent my Sunday evenings at Body & Soul at Vinyl in Lower Manhattan.
