Every film reminds us of another.
Each episode, Baron and the Doc talk about a new film, and then get sidetracked on old ones.
Baron and the Doc take on Captain America: Brave New World, directed by Julius Onah and starring Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, and Tim Blake Nelson. With big action and political intrigue, it’s certainly trying to be something—but does it succeed? Watch to find out what Brave New World reminded us of, for better or worse.
Baron and The Doc talk about A Complete Unknown, biopics, Timothée Chalamet's standout performance, the myth of Bob Dylan and what this Oscar-nominated film reminds them of...
The Substance (Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, directed by Coralie Fargeat) is the talk of the town and one of the creatively interesting films in this year's Oscar contenders. In this ep Baron and the Doc have a great discussion about the film and a couple great reminds me ofs.
Baron and the Doc are not particularly entertained by Ridley Scott's swords and sandals sequel, Gladiator II, starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. But they still find the energy to compare it to the much better film, 300 (Zack Snyder) and the much worse Speed 2: Cruise Control (Jan de Bont).

Baron and the Doc get a little fanatical about Hugh Grant's performance in the new horror film Heretic, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods and also starring Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. Then... they compare the film Saw (created by aussies, James Wan and Leigh Whannell) and Doc gets heretical and chooses the 2007 remake of Funny Games for his reminds me of, which is nevertheless a great reference (directed by the great Michael Haneke and starring Tim Roth and Naomi Watts). Finally... it is Micheal Haneke, not Michelle Haneekee.
Where does the latest Alien film sit in the canon of face-hugging space horror?
Baron and the Doc talk reboots, robots and reminders when they discuss Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez and starring a Cailee Spaeny, David Johnsson and Archie Renaux.

When Doc invites Baron to a writing retreat at his beachside cabin they decide to make the most of it and record a bonus episode. On the way to the cabin they stopped by the cinema to watch a 4K restoration of Park Chan-wook's 2003 classic, Oldboy. Baron and The Doc vowed to take on an action-packed, explosive, car-chase-filled, as brainless as possible, mainstream film after two weeks of festival films. And boy, did they find their film.
Terminator: Dark Fate. Starring Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes. Directed by Tim Miller.
It's just been released for streaming in Australia. This film is right up Baron's alley, but Doc had to do a little research first, and it was obvious from the get go that this was going to be a fun conversation!

This is the last film of Melbourne International Film Fest! Baron and Doc started with First Cow, and they have ended with First and Last Men. It just feels right, doesn't it?
First and Last Men is the creation of the late and great Jóhann Jóhannsson, Baron's favourite composer. He also directed and adapted the script for this film, which is narrated by Tilda Swinton.
The Doc and Baron mostly agree on the strengths and weaknesses of this film, but the unusual approach and subject matter takes them down some unexpected paths. Tune in to hear what they think and what the film reminds them of.

Ema is an exuberant Chilean film about youth, family, modern love and dance, set in the striking town of Valparaíso. Melbourne International Film Festival delivers a closing night film with lots of talking points, that The Doc and Baron have very different perspectives on. While describing the whole premise of the show itself may cause more grief than it should, the conversation soon gets into a breakdown of Jojo Rabbit, thoughts on Taika and his career and finally, maybe even more important than the film itself, a series of films and other things that 'Jojo Rabbit' brought to the surface from the murky depths of Doc's and Baron's brains.
