When times are at their darkest, it can be hard to sense God’s presence, letting us know we are cared for and loved. In, "How Did We Go From Joy To Crying This Christmas?", Pastor Raymond Meester teaches on how God's entire purpose of the Bible brings us back to Godself to remind us that God is always Immanuel, God With Us. January 01, 2023 - Raymond Meester
It’s Christmas Eve, and tonight we tell again the familiar story of God being born among us. Love in the flesh. Some of us need to hear it because we’ve faced a tough year, and our hearts need it. We also tell it to remind ourselves that this story is told in many ways every day, and so tonight we ask: where do you fit in the Christmas story? Because Christmas isn’t just once a year.
A sermon by the Rev. Dr. Sue Coller.
What do you do when faced with an impossible situation? One path hurts someone you love, another has you carrying your own private hurt inside. Rarely do our lives go the way we plan. Which means that the question is always before you – how will you respond? Will you choose the better way – and what is that better way? A Sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, on Matthew 1:18-25
What does it mean to have hope when you turn on the news and hear of three mass shootings in one week? At Christmas, we sing that Hope is born in Christ – but what does that really mean? And does it ask anything of us? What does it mean to have hope in the one who was born 2000 years ago, when the world is still broken and hurting today?
Is faith private or public? Personal or communal? A gift, for your own peace of mind, or a gift to be used for the common good?
Those are the questions that are wrapped up in today’s scripture reading, from Mark 2:1-12, which challenges us to take faith to a level that isn’t always comfortable.
Trigger Warning - there is a story about suicide in the podcast.
In a world that trades on fear, how do we move from fear to faith, and fear to love? A sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, at First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Are you religious or spiritual? Those who have been turned off by the church tend to say that they are spiritual, not religious, as if religion were corrupt. Those who have found the spiritual but not religious to lack grounding tend to say they are religious, not spiritual. Those who have found the religious institution to be deeply nourishing of their spirituality, might say they are religious AND spiritual. Which category do you fall into? Spiritual but not Religious? Religious but not Spiritual? Or Religious AND Spiritual?
In a way, that’s the question Jesus posed to those who followed him – what is the relationship between religion, spirituality, and our daily living?
A sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, from First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
When was the last time you colored outside the lines? Or maybe we should ask “when was the last time you took out a box of crayons and colored?
Today we’re going to explore creating a life outside the lines. Worship this week was led by our Worship Committee. Today for our Critical Faith Sermon Podcast, we are sharing the scripures and reflections from that service.
Do you ever get anxious? Do you ever worry about whether you have enough? Chances are, you said yes to both of those questions, and chances are, no matter what God promises in scripture, you’re not likely to let go of your worries or set your anxiety aside that easily.
Today we are going to hear Jesus go right to the heart of anxiety for many of us, and perhaps for some of us, it might hit a little too close to home. How much is enough?
Welcome to Sermons for A Critical Faith, a ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, where faith is nurtured, curiosity encouraged, diversity welcomed, and all are loved.
Today we’re going to explore anxiety and abundance through a parable, and a sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller

Today we’re hearing the story of the Good Samaritan – a story Jesus tells in answer to the question – who is my neighbor. But how often do we pay attention to the question that prompts that question? What must I do to inherit eternal life? That question is the driving force for many Christian traditions – and yet like so many things, the question is about so much more than where we end up after death. What does eternal life mean to you? And why doesn’t Jesus seem to care that much about it? A Sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, Lead Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska
The Greek word for hospitality, means literally, friend + stranger, or love + stranger. It is creating a place where strangers become friends. It also helps us combat ever-shrinking worlds. Is your world shrinking? A sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, from First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Intimacy is both a wonderful gift and a scary thought – opening ourselves up to be seen and touched by someone else. We don’t always welcome it from those we love the most, and yet it is what we long for. Today we hear the story of Mary washing Jesus’ feet – one of the most intimate stories in all scripture. Would you have welcomed her offering? And would you be comfortable washing someone else’s feet?
Have you ever been ashamed of something you’ve done? Have you ever felt like you’ve burned a bridge that can never be rebuilt? We have a tendency to define ourselves by our sins. Of course others sometimes do that to us too. Maybe we should stop listening to those voices, and listen to the voice of the one whose love covers all sins.
Does God punish you for your sins? That idea has caused so much harm over the years, and sent the message to those who need forgiveness and help the most that they are unworthy of love. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Today we’ll hear about the divine gardener who sees our potential and our needs, even if they are buried under piles of pain and shame and hurt.
Today we have the privilege of hearing from Pastor Jock Paleak. Jock is the pastor of Sudanese Ministries at First Presbyterian Church. About 15% of our membership is from South Sudan, and they speak the tribal language of Nuer, and we are fortunate to have Jock with us so that our Sundanese portion of our congregation can worship in their own language. No fear today, though, Pastor Jock is preaching in English, about the God who blesses small beginnings.
Is temptation always a bad thing? We pray for God to "lead us not into temptation." But maybe we should pray for just the opposite - the temptation to do something loving. Something kind. Something that will move us closer to the realm of God.
Do you feel helpless to do anything in the face of the crisis in Ukraine? What if you could make a bigger difference than you think? Today we hear the story of Jesus leaving the mountain top and entering into the needs of the world – and he calls us to follow. A sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller.
Today we’re talking about the challenge of living in a world whose values seem at odds with God’s values, and why those who cheat and steal seem to thrive, while those who do the right thing don’t. Some might look at the values of the Christian faith and say “they sound good – but they won’t help you get ahead.”
So why do we keep trying? Or as some might ask, “what’s in it for us?” That’s what we’re going to explore today in a sermon by the Rev. Dr. Sue Coller.
In Luke's version of the Beatitudes, we see how God's blessing upon the poor, the hungry, the mourners, and the hated, is not only a promise of hope, but is also a present charge to engage in the redemptive work of God. Sermon by Kris Brammer.
Want to hear a good fish story? You know, about the catch that was so big your boat couldn’t handle it? Actually, it’s about discipleship and courage, as we reflect on Jesus’ calling of his first disciples, and what that says to us today. Gospel reading from Luke 5:1-11
Jesus' ministry was mostly on the margins, with those others rejected. What does that mean for us? A sermon on Luke 4, by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller.

On April 3, 1968, the day before he was assassinated, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a famous speech, that ended with this: “I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” Martin Luther King Jr. was inviting people to join him on a journey home – home to the promised land. The prophet Isaiah also invites us on a journey home – home to the heart of God. They are both at their core spiritual journeys, inviting us to see ourselves with new eyes, and to embrace the hope to which we have been called. Our preacher is the Rev. Dr. Sue Coller
Today we're going to hear the story of John the Baptist – but in a way you probably have not heard it before. What does John tell us about ourselves, and how can this preacher known for fire and brimstone, be good news for us. Scripture: Luke 3:15-22. Preacher Rev. Dr. Sue Coller.
In the northern hemisphere the church gathers to celebrate the nativity in the stilled darkness of winter. Winters can be times of challenge, and times of challenge, like a 2-year long pandemic, can be like a prolonged winter. The promise of this season is that God’s light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it. (John 1:1-18) A Critical Faith Sermon by Rev. Carl Eskridge

The underbelly of the human psyche, what is often referred to as our dark side, is the origin of every act of self-sabotage. Join us on this week's podcast as we discover what it looks like and how we live if we have serious questions about our faith and relationship with God.
All questions are good questions, right? Let's find out now.
It is said that we can live for 40 days without food, 4 days without water, 4 minutes without air….but we can only live 4 seconds without hope.
What happens when all hope seems to die and we don’t know where to go, what to do, or how get our hope restored again?
Let’s find out on today’s a critical faith podcast with Pastor Sue Coller from 1st Presbyterian church in Lincoln NE.
As followers of Jesus how do we live in a world that is more and more antagonist.
That's what we talk about on today's Podcast.
We hear a lot about the need to be more loving and kind, and yet the current reality of our world seems that we are more divided than ever, more toxic than ever…so why is that and what does being more loving look like, especially in a faith community.
Let’s find out on today’s a critical faith podcast, here now is Pastor Sue Coller of first Presbyterian church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Abide, literally, means to 'stay' or 'remain. ' To abide in the Lord means that we continually receive, believe and trust that Jesus is everything we need. ... When we abide in Jesus, we remain steadfast as we walk in Him, depend on Him.
That’s hard enough to do and then to live it out might be even more difficult for us.
That’s the topic on today’s a critical faith podcast.
Do miracles still happen?
Does God still intervene because we ask for a miracle?
Let's discover more together on this podcast that answers those questions in ways you may or may not have pondered.
Today's Podcast with Pastor Jane Holtzclaw from First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska
“Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.”
Anne Lamott
“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”
Robert Muller
So, what is the reality in our lives in regards of should we forgive, can we forgive and what does that look like.
Let’s discover more about that on todays a critical faith podcast with pastor sue Coller from first Presbyterian church Lincoln, NE
On Easter Sunday the sound of Christians saying ‘he is risen, he is risen indeed’ rang out all around the world.
But what does Easter mean in a world where children die because we just don't value them enough? Easter is good news, but it can also be something we struggle with - even people of faith, when 2000 years after that first Easter, we still have way too much suffering in this world.
That is the topic in today’s podcast.
It’s Palm Sunday and on today’s a critical faith podcast, we explore the gift of Misfits - or better said, gift of community as we continue our series of the Gifts of the Dark Wood during Lent.
So let’s find out what it means to be a part of a group the appears to be on the outside looking in.
Here now is Pastor Sue Coller from First Presbyterian church in Lincoln, ne
We continue our series 'The gifts of the dark wood' with Pastor Sue Coller from First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, NE.
We are never lost, even when we feel alone, isolated, and confused...God is not and God loves us with a love that we cannot comprehend.
Does God still speak? It would be nice if God would speak as clearly as God does in the Bible – in direct, conversational English, but rarely does God’s voice some through that unequivocally clear. The Bible talks about God’s voice sounding like thunder. So what does the rumbling thunder of God’s voice sound like today?
Loss – it doesn’t sound like a gift, does it? Having the supports we rely on stripped away doesn’t sound like a gift. Feeling empty and drained doesn’t sound like a gift.
Today we begin a journey in this season of Lent. Our worship series, “Gifts of the Dark Wood” is about “seeing life through new eyes.” Life is messy. Life is uncertain. Rather than a problem to be solved, what if we saw uncertainty, failure, emptiness, and loss as gifts? What if we saw how these uncomfortable times can actually help us let go of all we cannot know so that we can live more wholeheartedly?

The choice is yours. And mine. We explore this in this issue of A Critical Faith - a sermon by Rev. Dr. Sue Coller, from First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska
