This is a follow up video from a blog we posted last week focusing on the higher than usual new hires I noticed on Linked In.  While the number of companies on hiring freezes is up significantly, it does not mean companies should not be in hiring mode with branding.

02:18  Why the candidate-experience is so important
02:34  Speed and transparency are key to close the position effectively
04:17  Companies have the upper hand in the market now but should still have a hiring strategy
06:10  Attract passive candidates through branding
07:10  Be transparent and start building the branding relationship

Branding is one of the best ways for companies to attract the right people to their brand, culture and mission for when hiring and the market picks up.

Check out some of the data here from the blog:

I came across an article the other day about a new hire at a Japanese company that was fired because he was "out of frame" on webinars.  See story here:  https://mothership.sg/2020/05/japanese-fired-out-of-frame-zoom/

While I do not know how accurate or valid this story is, it would not surprise me if it did happen, especially with a Japanese company. But the topic was interesting for a couple of reasons.

First of all, as ridiculous as this accusation sounds, it shows that some companies still do not know how to manage people whether they are onsite or offsite and secondly because the millennial complex and now the COVID complex are still real.

This is an interview I did last year (pre-COVID-19 era) with a Japanese company employee who had worked for a large, Japanese insurance company for over 10 years and made the big decision to move to France to start a new life and career.

The interview touches on some relevant topics in today's recruiting market in Japan and  helps better understand some of the frustrations many employees are facing in typically domestic companies.

I was fascinated by her story and how frank she was with her opinions on many topics that affect retention and employee career development in Japan. With the current WFH environments many Japanese companies are facing, the same core issues are always going to affect the morale of employees and is something that companies should be more aware of during COVID-19 era.

About the company:

The company is a leading life science company with over 10,000 employees globally and over 3,000 employees in Japan. This company is a leader in the life science sector globally not only for its drugs and research but also for its CSR activities and diversity & inclusion initiatives.

About the position and ideal candidate:

They are looking for an HR professional with at least 8-10 years payroll operations experience within a large matrix organization. The role will oversee the smooth operations of payroll within the organization as well as managing teams in Japan and APAC. The person needs extensive experience with Payroll. This means practical hands-on experience with payroll operations as well as the ability to manage outsourced vendors. Experience with social insurance and tax issues is also a benefit. In addition, the person needs to be strategic and be able to assess areas that can be improved within the organization and take actions to streamline the structure.

This position will manage a team both in Japan and other branches within the APAC region so they must have people management skills and business level English. While the working language is Japanese, it does require someone with the ability and mindset to communicate in a global environment.

This role would be ideal for someone currently working on the operations side of payroll and wants to move into a more senior, strategic level role. Experience in the life science sector is preferred but people from other industries are fine but the learning curve will be higher if you are unfamiliar with the life science sector so you would have to be able to bring that knowledge to the interview.

About the salary:

The salary range is flexible and dependent on the person’s experience and skill set. They can offer a competitive package for the right person.
