In this episode, I chat with Alice Aldredge about the first performance she gives with her beginners each year. She is new to SC this year and is teaching middle school in Dorchester District 2 at RIver Oaks MS. Before moving to SC, she taught MS and HS band in North Carolina. She talks to us about the first performance that she gives with her beginning band students and shared the script she uses for this concert. In this episode, I chat with Christian Scott about the first few weeks of beginning band. He has been in a Title I school in Greenville, Tanglewood MS, for the past nine years. He has a unique take on beginning band because he had to provide 100% of the instruments his students would play. When he left Tanglewood, he had around 200 in band. He also talks about the importance of a consistent and sequential program of teaching rhythm. He is now the band director at Hillcrest MS in Greenville, SC.

Young Middle School Directors (0-3 years of teaching) can apply to be a part of this track. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced directors, direct an ensemble, receive feedback from other directors, meet other MS band directors from all over SC either in person or on the phone, attend clinics, bounce ideas off of other directors and have a blast learning the ins and outs of being a middle school band director.
