Sabbath: Practicing the Way of Jesus
“How are you doing?” “Busy.”
How many of us have participated in this exchange? Some wear the answer as a badge of honour. For others, the answer is a painful confession to a life that feels out of control. For all of us, this response reflects a culture where our worth flows out of what we produce and achieve. If you’re not on the verge of burn-out you probably aren’t working hard enough.
But what if there is another way?
Jesus invites his followers to experience a rest and realignment through the practice of Sabbath; a radical practice that challenges our culture’s obsession with production and busyness and invites us into a better way of life in sync with the heart of God. In the practice of Sabbath, we discover more than just a day off in the week, but a whole different way of living each and every day.

We begin a new decade considering these questions, together, as a church. “Living Without Walls” is a 7-part series that focuses on what it means for us to live out the mission of Jesus in our world, individually and corporately. It examines the barriers that so often hold us back from truly being a community. And it issues the call for us to meet Jesus again, freshly, and to become more like him.

Advent Imagining a new way...
Who likes waiting? Lineups at Christmas are a royal nuisance . We hate waiting.
But the season of ADVENT calls us to embrace this counter-cultural practice of waiting, anticipating. Rather than rushing ahead, we slow down and IMAGINE His Kingdom influence upon us and our world.
We see two purposes for this Advent waiting. We prepare our hearts to celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus, the God-man. He is the Light who still shines in the darkness. We take time to capture moments, to slow down, to pray and consider the ongoing influence of His life on ours. Emmanuel - God is actually with us.
But that is not all. We also engage in self-examination, in expectation of Jesus' Second Coming in glory. We imagine the beauty of His literal and physical presence among us. And we prepare our hearts and attitudes in readiness for Him. Am I ready to welcome Jesus ? Am I welcoming Him today? We will look at these themes through December. Join us each Sunday as we resist the rush. We will slow down and IMAGINE Jesus' full transforming effect in our life together as the people of God at ForestView Church....where people meet Jesus and become more like Him.

Imagine the mess of renovations at Forestview Church. You don't need to imagine . It is ever before us , right? But the promise of a building renewed and refreshed and very useful is compelling.
Such is the Sermon on the Mount. Reading through, we may wonder how can I ever be this kind of person?.... never anxious, never critical and judgmental, loving my enemies and praying for them, giving to the needy , totally in control of my anger, keeping on with my marriage to strengthen it rather than get out ? What a challenge. This is the renovation plan that God has for us as He changes our hearts . He welcomes us into His kingdom and describes the kind of life we can have, the life He invites us deeper into.This promise of renewal is quite compelling , even as we fail forward in the spiritual journey.
Our prayer as we complete this study of Jesus' sermon is this: O LORD, give us more and more tastes of your kingdom life. In all our weakness, form us as a people so that we live like this. May our families be transformed by Your presence. And may our church be the place where we meet with You, Jesus, and become more like You.

Sermon on the Mount
What would it have been like to actually SEE Jesus in the flesh, maybe sit on the hillside as He spoke out the Sermon on the Mount, hear His voice, see His smile and feel the intensity of His warm personal gaze?
OK, not quite possible for us, but this month we will be listening to the same Jesus and His words and thoughts, with the benefit of the same Holy Spirit . Our desire is to understand and embrace the kind of life He is offering, an amazing experience of God and His presence, in every part of life, the good the bad and the ugly. Jesus is offering this life to each one of us. Not one of us is too far off course.
He is saying that the Kingdom of God is available to us all, as we encounter Jesus and His truth, in the presence of others....sharing life together in community. In the midst of a large crowd of raw humanity, Jesus teaches that the presence of God and His kingdom is available here and now. This is about God and His activity, and His desire to bless us and be with us in all of life's circumstances.
This month has the incredible potential of bringing us all to greater spiritual transformation, together, in the presence of Jesus, for the sake of others. We are a community where people meet Jesus, and become more like Him. I am looking forward to this adventure together with you.See you on Sunday.

Marinating in Jesus and His words of life...
I trust your summer has gone well and you have seen the LORD at work, sustaining and refreshing you. As we launch into the fall at Forestview, we want to marinate in Jesus and His words from the Sermon on the Mount.We are a COMMUNITY where people MEET Jesus and BECOME more like Him. In Matthew 5-7, Jesus is asking us to consider who God is.....and what He desires for His people. Jesus ' message is that our God is a loving Father who cares about our hearts, and NOT just our external deeds or religious practice.
Jesus is actually inviting us into a way of life that is truly LIFE, a human flourishing life, life the way it was meant to be . This is a personal invitation from Jesus to reorient our values and vision of life, to deconstruct our old habits and ways of being, and refashion our lives by His teaching and model.Wow. Do I ever want this personally for myself, and for all of us here at Forestview.
We enter this new way of living, imitating Jesus . He fully trusts His Father in all things and introduces to the world around a fresh taste of the Kingdom of God. We want to do this too, fully trust God and live like Jesus, but we do this so IMPERFECTLY. True? So we see our deep need for God's grace and forgiveness as we keep moving forward together as followers /apprentices of Jesus Christ. We help one another to LOVE BETTER : love God and each other, and all of God's creation.
As kids go back to school, parents are asking, " How can I help my child believe the Gospel of Jesus, stay out of trouble, and live their life for Christ?" This fall we will consider our part in this: How will I live in front of my child so that they see an adult who is fully committed to Jesus and the Gospel, like I have put my full trust in God and His ways.....not perfection, but authentically an apprentice of Jesus Christ. You are warmly invited to join us on this JOURNEY.

Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
After holding back in contemplative worship through LENT, you pulled out all the stops on Easter Sunday morning. We worshiped the Risen and Living LORD Jesus Christ with joyful music, engaging baptisms, eating the bread and drinking the cup to declare and celebrate Jesus.We saw and heard stories of commitment to love and follow Jesus....to walk together out into the wilderness, never alone...but together, as a community. We also dug into the Word of God to rehearse the meaning of the Resurrection .We heard God's generous call again "to be a community where people meet Jesus and become more like Him."It was a high time together.
Now, after Easter, we will consider how the resurrected and living Jesus changes the lives of ordinary people. Jesus restores and forgives our failures , denials and sins.He helps in our times of unbelief. He commissions us to acknowledge Him and serve others, even at cost to ourselves. And Jesus sends us out as His apprentices to be bearers of peace and forgiveness to our neighbours. You are invited to join us on this journey as we help each other to LOVE better- to love God and each other and God's creation.

Imagine that you were a disciple, following Jesus for 3 years, seeing His miracles, hearing His teaching, amazed at His compassion and grace towards people- and His anger at those who used religion to exert power over others. You are expecting a great overthrow of the religious powers, and most especially the political powers of Rome that dominated. A new King and Kingdom are here!
Instead, Jesus begins speaking of His death! Shock.
During Lent, we will walk with the disciples through the upside down leadership of Jesus and His message that He will be killed. They/We fail over and over (Broken), yet Jesus keeps forgiving and loving with amazing grace....and they/we begin to be formed more like Jesus in the process (Becoming). We see Jesus through the eyes of His disciples, and we see ourselves, as we move toward the cross.
We encourage you to read through some of the Bible passages below as you prepare your hearts for this journey. Perhaps this will spark some lively conversation around the dinner table.

Imagine that you were a disciple, following Jesus for 3 years, seeing His miracles, hearing His teaching, amazed at His compassion and grace towards people- and His anger at those who used religion to exert power over others. You are expecting a great overthrow of the religious powers, and most especially the political powers of Rome that dominated. A new King and Kingdom are here!
Instead, Jesus begins speaking of His death! Shock.
During Lent, we will walk with the disciples through the upside down leadership of Jesus and His message that He will be killed. They/We fail over and over (Broken), yet Jesus keeps forgiving and loving with amazing grace....and they/we begin to be formed more like Jesus in the process (Becoming). We see Jesus through the eyes of His disciples, and we see ourselves, as we move toward the cross.
We encourage you to read through some of the Bible passages below as you prepare your hearts for this journey. Perhaps this will spark some lively conversation around the dinner table.

Broken and Becoming: Following the Disciples to the Cross

God is pretty clear that He is looking for those who will hear His truth and know His truth.....and then LIVE it out. Be doers of the word, and not hearers only (James 1:22).
Through January , we will consider four of Jesus' parables, taking time to reflect on His provocative stories, so as to move us into action. We long for more of these transformative practices. Our last Sunday in this series will be panel discussion to review what we're learning and applying, and to field your questions.

As Doug connected with many in our church family over the last number of weeks He was reminded of the hurts, losses and pains that are present in so many of our lives. He felt drawn to explore the trustworthiness of God in the midst of difficult times and circumstances as we kick off 2019 together.

During the month of December, we will focus on the first chapter of Luke, to see that God has been at work through his Spirit, working out his grand purpose, all the way through the events of Jesus' birth. The coming of Jesus to our bluish -green planet changes everything, overturns everything.

Nehemiah: Brick by Brick
God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us...Ephesians 3: 20
This great and encouraging truth about Almighty God is lived out in the events of Nehemiah, a godly man working for a foreign empire. In this powerful story, Nehemiah faces what appears to be an impossible situation. He hears that the city of Jerusalem is in ruins. The people - his people - are in great trouble and disgrace. The walls are broken down and the gates are burned. The people are extremely vulnerable. In such an impossible situation, what on earth can be done?
Over the next four weeks, we will walk with Nehemiah to see how our great God displays His power. Nehemiah prays with great sincerity (as we will be doing throughout the 100 Days of Prayer). He calls people to unity and to labour together in the reconstruction of the walls surrounding Jerusalem. They face resistance from within and without. And as they build the wall, they rediscover that God is true to His promises. A renewed people are given a taste of what life in His kingdom is like.
As we move through the 100 Days of Prayer, we too are praying for the deep working of God among us, for the LORD to do great things which can only be attributed to him. You are encouraged to follow this journey with Nehemiah and the people of ForestView, and to taste the same renewal. God bless you.

Whose Church Is This?
At its best, the church is beautiful: the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, filled with the Spirit, devoted to one another, a sign, symbol and foretaste of new life with God - the life we were meant to live. A church with Christ at the centre has His love, His truth and His way as the core reality in both teaching and practice. Such a church is a safe place to hear the Gospel and to grow like Him so that the world too can "see Jesus".
And when we fall short of that, it's time for a realignment.
In his series "Whose Church is This?" Doug Loveday will be helping us look at Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. In His full deity, Christ alone is able to lead us forward into a fruitful and hopeful future. In His full humanity, He understands all the human complications that we deal with as members together of the body. And so, Jesus, our Head, urges us to do the hard work, the humbling work of making every effort to guard the unity of the Holy Spirit in the bond of peace. This peace and unity is so very much His good and perfect will for us. This brings honour to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and is a powerful testimony to the world. To accomplish this, Jesus prays for us, that we may be one....so that the world will believe.

Fish don't see water. And humans hardly notice air. Being fully aware of our environment is actually really hard. But whether we notice it or not, our environment shapes how we think and move and act.
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, urges the church to become aware of our environment. He wants us to be aware of the stories all around us -- stories that are forming and shaping us often without us even noticing. But he also wants us to be aware of another even more powerful story: the astounding mercy of God. And in light of those mercies Paul calls us to live as an alternative community, uniquely different from the stories that dominate this world. He calls us to become a transformed community: living humbly in response to our God-given gifts, shaped by the Spirit, and serving as one worshipping body in Christ. It's quite the call!
Throughout the month of September, we will immerse ourselves in the message of Romans 12 and consider the counter-cultural life that God calls His church into - that God calls ForestView into. As we start a new ministry year, it's our prayer that, as a church, we would be freshly awakened to the astounding mercies of God and in light of those mercies, hear the call to live lives of generosity, hospitality and peace.

ON THE WAY: The gospel of Matthew
The earliest Christians called themselves followers of "The Way". This Lenten season we will explore the journey of Jesus during his days here on earth as told by his disciple Matthew. This particular gospel was written for Jewish believers, and we see the life of Jesus paralleled with the lives of the Israelites as they journeyed from slavery, into the desert and finally into the Promised Land. We will take up way-stops along the road with the Messiah, exploring some of the most important events in his life and reflecting on how they parallel our own travels as we follow The Way, the Truth, and the Life.
