For those who haven’t worked in the bike industry, Michael Gamstetter’s name may well be unknown. He is, however, one of the more endlessly fascinating people the bike industry has sucked into its orbit and refused to relinquish. I came to know Gamstetter when he was a staffer and then editor at the trade magazine […]

Our apologies on this going up a day late; we had server migration issues that kept us from posting, but everything is good now. We’ve got questions about gravel this week. Selene takes on several listener questions about riding gravel, including being the last up a climb and making your…
Selene is back from her visit to a socially distanced gravel camp and she says it was huge fun for all involved. We will hear about the riding, the education and her take on how event promoters can put on events while still respecting our need to act with consideration…
This week Selene takes on a listener question about whether or not she would race with a mask if she had to. As it turns out, the answer requires some thought considering there are so many forms of racing. Dovetailing with a piece she wrote for Bicycling about Dylan Lorimer,…
Selene is back from vacation and takes on two listener questions this week. The first concerns how to choose how much travel you need in a full-suspension mountain bike when shopping. The second regards shoes and how to pick a shoe that can be walked in without developing heel blisters….
This week Selene looks at a fresh strategy to bring women’s racing to a broad audience with the new announcement from the Colorado Classic. By streaming the race online it keeps risk down for the audience while still giving sponsors the exposure they seek. Patrick digs into the controversy caused…
On a recent ride, a friend of Selene’s broke his stem. Fortunately for him he was able to avoid injury, but it got Selene’s group of riding friends talking about what sorts of inspections and cleaning a bike needs, especially a bike that is ridden regularly and might be more…
This week Selene begins by taking on a question about why, in the wake of not following a regimented training plan, our listener has notched Strava PRs on segments they have ridden upwards of 50 times. She then considers the bicycle as a force for social change. There have been…

Selene checks in with some feedback on last week’s talk about oval chainrings. Listeners presented us with some angles on oval chainrings we hadn’t considered. We get an update on how last weekend’s ride for Rebecca Rusch’s Giddy Up Challenge. Selene and her husband Dave did the half Everest, which…
This week our intrepid duo is back with a look at oval chainrings, an idea that goes back practically as far as the bike itself. The question, of course, is do they really confer any benefit. Well, do they? Selene and Patrick tackle the science and the perception, but also…
With the massive increase in bike sales due to shelter in place requirements, there is a lot of curiosity about how that is playing out in terms of kids bike sales, adult bike sales, ebike sales, trail usage and more. Selene answers a reader question about just what sorts of…
We seem to have entered a new phase of our collective shelter in place, we might call it the cranky phase, Selene says. She discusses what she’s doing to stay sane, how she views the different takes of other folks she encounters and just who she’s willing to ride with….

She considers strategies for keeping the buddy system in place, even as we continue to respect the need for social distancing. Patrick…
This week Selene explores what cycling means to her and how those rides that we don’t want to do make the rides we want to do that much better. Patrick addresses the impact Covid-19 is having on life and how important riding remains in helping us all remain centered as…
There’s been a lot of talk about what constitutes an “essential business” as more and more communities are put on a diet of shelter in place. For many people, bike shops are an essential business due to riders’ needs for tubes, tires, chain lube and service. We also take on…
We’re talking about Covid-19 this week. Kinda hard to do anything else, huh? First we look at riding outside and whether or not that’s the right thing to do. By now it seems obvious that the Covid-19 pandemic will significantly alter the 2020 cycling calendar. In the wake of the…
Selene is back from The Mid-South and managed to avoid getting sick and breaking her bike. Patrick is not so much back from spring break as still here; he canceled his trip with his boys. Selene talks about spending a day in red mud and what it was like traveling…
This week we take on Daylight Saving Time and sleep. Selene talks about her coming trip to Oklahoma for The Mid-South (formerly Land Run), and a quote from her boss, Bill Strickland, about suffering. Patrick admits that what passes for winter in Northern California has exited stage left and spring…

Of the many builders I’ve met over the years, I don’t think I’ve met any with a more unusual background. Bryan Hollingsworth is a New Englander who cut his teeth working for Seven Cycles. He may be the only builder I’ve ever met who has fabricated frames from carbon fiber,…
This week Selene takes on a listener question regarding some of the online training challenges that cause competitors to go into zone 5 with each installment. Is that a bad thing? How does it affect developing base miles? With so many new gravel events on the calendar, Patrick asks the…
It’s a new year, and hopefully not a new you. You’re fine. But what do you want to change from years past and how should you think about it? Selene takes on that question, suggesting maybe we think about intentions rather than resolutions. Patrick has been nerding out on mountain…
This week Selene looks back at the career of sports physician Andy Pruitt and his work with Specialized and his leadership in bicycle fit. Pruitt is retiring from his work with Specialized, and he has been a steady source of wisdom and insight for Selene over two decades. Patrick takes…
This week Selene takes on a bevvy of listener questions that were intriguing, but not quite meaty enough to carry a whole segment. She covers artificial joints, diabetes, gravel events and more. Patrick and some board members from the California Mountain Biking Coalition got to join mountain bike legend Mark…
It’s the time of the year for planning the next season and Selene has been marking up her calendar with her schedule. She shares where she’s headed, along with a few whys. With Christmas around the corner, Patrick takes a look at gift giving ideas and suggests an approach that…
Of the many frame builder who can capably be called masters of the craft, it is distinctly possible that no one has been at the bench longer than Mark Nobilette. His credentials are impeccable. He was trained by Albert Eisentraut in the first frame building class that Eisentraut taught, which…
This week Selene and Patrick talk Thanksgiving. The talk turns from turkeys to the real occasion of the holiday, what we are grateful for and they run down some of the things for which they are grateful. And here’s to hoping everyone got out for a fun ride before the…
The end of the season is a great time to reboot the system. No, we’re not talking your computer. Selene considers just what downtime should be at the end of the season and just what we are trying to accomplish when we take a rest at the end of the…
With the end of the season here (except for everyone racing cyclocross), Selene has taken a step back to think about what she did this year, what she achieved this year and what she wants to do next year. Underlying all this is a question of purpose, as in what is…
Note: If you got the episode with the unedited beginning, our apologies. Download it again and it has been corrected. Or you can laugh at the mistake. Your choice. Patrick is back from Costa Rica, so the show is back on schedule now. This week, Selene takes on a reader…
This week Selene discusses her experience with Iron Cross, the gravel/cyclocross/insanity event that takes place in Central Pennsylvania. This is her tenth anniversary of doing the race and she has won it four times previously. The event is so challenging the word “ludicrous” comes up, possibly more than once. Conditions…
In this second part of my interview with Toby Stanton, we discuss his team of juniors and what the ingredients are that has made the team so incredibly and consistently successful. Hot Tubes riders and stars and stripes jerseys are kinda like peanut butter and jelly. There are other things…
After a week off due to a power outage in Northern California, the show is back. Last weekend unPAved, the event Selene’s husband Dave promotes, took place and Selene rode it but did not race it. She explains why and it was the best way to do the race, at…
I first met Toby Stanton at a mountain bike race in 1991. He was coaching a team that included future cyclocross supahstah (this was in Massachusetts, mind you) Jonathan Page and their kits were white with red, yellow and blue dots, signifying their sponsorship by Wonder Bread. A year or…
Selene and Patrick have been away riding. For Selene, last weekend was the nearly annual Bicycling Magazine Fall Classic. Unfortunately, even in organized rides, things don’t always go according to plan. Or the advertising. So what do you do when the aid stations don’t provide enough aid? Patrick spent eight…
This week Selene takes on weight loss once again. She addresses the problems with seeing that as necessary as well as seeing cycling as a vehicle for it, rather than an end in itself. And yet, she still accepts that it is an important goal to many people and she’s…
This week Selene takes on a reader question about how exercise affects alcohol and how alcohol affects hydration. It turns out that this is a more complicated interaction than most folks understand. Alcohol affects how your body deals with lactate, your ability to ride hard after having a few beers…
My guest today is frame builder David Wages of Ellis Cycles. There was a time when the most common career path for a frame builder was to put in solid years building bikes for a brand that sold bikes in production sizing. Only after having put in a couple of…
We’ve gone from “‘cross is coming,” to “‘cross is here.” In a fair number of locations around the country, the season’s first cyclocross races were held last weekend. Selene is excited for her local series to start. Are you ready? With fall right around the corner, or more unofficially, it’s…
This week my guest is writer and flow state expert Steven Kotler. Kotler is a New York Times-bestselling author known for his work decoding the neurochemistry of flow. What began as a series of articles for Discover Magazine led to his first book of nonfiction, West of Jesus, a tale…
This week Selene takes on the subject of finding a coach specifically for mountain biking. What should you look for? Coaches aren’t all the same and it’s important to find the right coach for you. Selene breaks down some of the considerations, as well as some of the answers. We…
My guest this week is the former executive director of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, the organization that oversees, administers and fosters mountain bike racing for high school kids. McInerny has been involved with the organization almost since its inception and became the executive director in 2012. At the time,…
Selene takes on a reader question regarding fasted riding for women riders because her previous advice didn’t entirely jive with the advice of another expert on training for women, and there’s an interesting point of intersection between the two. Last weekend she was in Steamboat Springs for a new gravel…
This week my guest is sports psychologist Dr. Kristin Keim. Keim came to my attention several years ago when I began to see her posts on social media reshared by friends of mine in the bike racing world. Her posts were fonts of positivity rooted in practices that can bring…
This week I’m taking a slightly different tack and am interviewing an academic. My guest is sociologist Ben Brewer of James Madison University. Brewer picked up the cycling bug in the 1980s as a teenager and had the good sense never to lose his interest in the sport. Like many…
This week Selene takes on another reader question, this time about keto diets and their value, as well as their downsides. She also shares her experience teaching teen girls mountain biking skills for the upcoming NICA race season. Patrick talks bodywork and what a difference physical therapy and massage have…
Selene is back from PPARC where she and her comrades across Pennsylvania raised more than $300,000. That works out to more than $4000 per rider, which is a staggering sum. She talks about the riding, the mission and the people. This week she takes up a reader question regarding his…
My guest this week is frame builder Mike Desalvo of Desalvo Custom Cycles. That’s Desalvo on the left with Sacha White (center) and Paul Sadoff (right), both of whom get mentions in the interview. Desalvo is part of what I refer to as the second generation of American builders, those…
Selene is about to ride clear across Pennsylvania in the PPRAC: The Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer. This is the 18th edition of the ride and Selene, along with her husband Dave, have done the last nine editions of the semiannual event. This year’s ride is nearing it’s goal to…
My guest this week is painter Rudi Jung of Black Magic Paint. Jung caught my eye in 2017 with a frame he painted for Chris Bishop. It was a mostly black frame and fork, but had a red-orange-yellow fade through a design that had the look of wood grain. It’s…
This week Selene takes on coaching and the difference in interacting with an actual human coach vs. an AI one like with VeloPro, which Patrick just reviewed this week. It turns out, Selene does better with a real human. Patrick finally caught up with Dirty Kanza’s Chief Gravel Officer, Jim…
My guest this week is frame builder Frank Wadleton, better known in the industry as Frank the Welder. Wadleton, or FTW as he was often referred to, was a household name to mountain bike action readers back in the late 1980s and into the 1990s Wadleton made his name initially…
It’s summer in Pennsylvania! This week we tackle a Paceline-style PSA in the form of CPR training. Selene has quite the story. Riding eMTBs on singletrack is an activity that can elicit some strong opinions. Patrick takes on the use of these bikes on singletrack in the various kinds of…
My guest this week is someone that you likely haven’t heard of before. His name is Ryan Johnson, but his resume is arguably one of the most interesting I’ve come across in the bike industry. For anyone who wants to know how the bike industry works, Johnson is someone who…
Say you’re going on vacation, because it’s summer, and say you’re taking your bike, because duh bikes. And say you’re going someplace mountainous. Also, say you live at sea level. Will the altitude ruin your riding? Selene talked to some experts to see just how much the reduced oxygen will…
This week our show is an appreciation of frame builder Bruce Gordon who passed away June 7th at the age of 71. Gordon was one of the most experienced and talented frame builders ever to pick up a torch. He learned the craft from Albert Eisentraut in the first frame…
We begin with a reader question about how to rescue a day that doesn’t seem to be going according to plan. You’re not as fast as you thought, don’t have the power you anticipated, your gut rots or maybe you’re just bonking. What do you do? Selene sets off for…
First up, thanks for enduring this several-week break due to my travels. I would have loved to get an episode squeezed in there somehow, but today’s show required a fair bit of tending to create; it wasn’t the simple conversation that so many of these interviews are. So this week’s…
Selene is tough. We all knew that. But last weekend, she went to Oklahoma for an event known as Tulsa Tough. The question of the day? Which is tougher: Tulsa, or Selene? Easy there, champ. Patrick’s idea of a hard ride has been downgraded since Dirty Kanza. He’s still in…
This week we begin with a reader question regarding max heart rate. Will that “220 minus your age” formula accurately predict your max? And if not, does it matter? And if it matters and it’s not accurate, what should you be using instead? Selene talks max heart rate and the…
This week Selene admits that she’s been taking a fresh approach to some of the events she’s doing. And it’s not some new training regiment guaranteed to make you kick butt. Instead, she’s decided just to wing it. With Dirty Kanza just a few days away, Patrick is in the…
It’s been said that predicting a bad future is a way to set a negative intention. Last week Selene suggested she might not be 100 percent ready for the Keystone Offroad. It might not have been her most successful day ever. But clearly, she’s had worse days, right? She had…
My guest this week is Santa Cruz-based builder Paul Sadoff of Rock Lobster Cycles. I first encountered Rock Lobsters in the late 1980s when mountain biking was exploding. It was only later that I learned just how accomplished Sadoff was in building road bikes and especially cyclocross bikes. He is…
Selene isn’t ready. In a good quarter of a century she says she’s not quite ready for this coming weekend’s race. Yeah, we had the same reaction. After all, if Selene isn’t ready, who is? But that’s her central issue for this week’s show: preparation. She delineates between fun suffering…
This week we shake things up a bit and Selene takes the reins of the show. Patrick talks about his longest ever day, mileage-wise, on the bike. Selene recently reported on a new study on personality and exercise. And if you think that cycling is the domain of lone-wolf introverts,…
This week, I’m devoting the show to frame builder Roland Della Santa who passed away last weekend at the age of 72. Della Santa is most famous for helping to launch Greg LeMond into bike racing; one of the earliest shots of LeMond winning a bike race is of him…
Last weekend, Selene rode the Lu Lacka Wyco Hundo, a 100-mile ride in northeaster Pennsylvania with its share of dirt roads, steep hills and, on this day, plenty of cold weather and rain. Let’s just say it was an adventure, but the best part was when she met Paceline listener…
In the second part of my interview with Tom Kellogg, we begin with a discussion of geometry for track bikes, and while this subject may not seem super-compelling on its face, it brings in a very interesting discussion of position, weight distribution and handling geometry on the bike. As a…
Pennsylvania in spring is a good place to be a cyclist. The landscape glows in technicolor and the events can be unusual with equal doses of nutty, fun and camaraderie. Selene shares some of the unusual events that she does, like the 666 Cinder Race Series. For her, these oddball…
This week my guest is Tom Kellogg of Spectrum Cycles. Kellogg’s career in the bike industry spans more than 40 years and includes relationships with brands like Merlin, American Bicycle Group and Time. His bikes have won more dozens of national championships and even world championships, which is why…
Patrick is back from the Sea Otter Classic so we are back on our normal schedule. This week he reports on a new gravel bike, one that happens to be fully suspended, to be released later this year. The Niner MCR offers 40mm of travel in the fork and 50mm…
This week my guest is frame builder Steve Rex. Back in 1997 I moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., and began doing the local group rides. There was a guy on that ride who wasn’t on a Trek, Specialized or any of the other big brands. He was on a Steve…
This week Selene takes on a couple of training questions, and prepares Patrick for some of the hard work he’s going to need to do as he gets ready for this year’s Dirty Kanza. She discusses the usefulness of group rides and intervals, even for a rider planning to do…
No. 22 is a newcomer on the custom bike scene. The company was founded in 2012 by Bryce Gracey and Mike Smith on the idea that titanium just rides better. After working with a couple of different contract shops that produced prototypes for them, they settled on Saratoga Frameworks—the operation…
We’re gratified to report that we’ve been hearing from listeners who have been getting health issues checked out as a result of Mark Weir and Jess Cera’s stories. Selene just did the Hell of Hunterdon and it sounds like she says the first word in the event’s name was well-earned. It…
This week my guest is frame builder Nick Crumpton. We may be in the golden age of frame building thanks to the fact that some of the finest steel frames ever produced are being built today. That didn’t stop Nick Crumpton from deciding he wanted to apply his knowledge to…
Before Lance and LeMond, and 7-11 and Motorola, there was a group of cyclists paving the way for American racing on the International level. They were the Raleigh Boys of the 60s and 70s. The Raleigh Boys set the benchmark as the first fully sponsored American Cycling Team competing abroad…
Chef and racer Jess Cerra is the brain behind one of the newest bars on the market, JoJé Bar. With her knowledge of nutrition, the needs of elite racers and her understanding of food as a chef, she decided to formulate a new bar with less carbohydrate, more fat and…
The UCI has announced the first-ever eMTB world championships. There will be multiple categories for both men and women and the prize money will be equal. Of course, there are people who think that this should be sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association, not the Union Cycliste Internationale. And then…
To hear Aaron Barcheck tell it, he wasn’t even planning to be a frame builder when he went to UBI to take their titanium frame building class. He definitely wasn’t thinking of starting a brand. But after finishing the class and working for Dean Titanium, well, one thing led to…
It may be February and she may live in Pennsylvania, but Selene has started her season with the first of the season’s Spring Classics. It was cold and reasonably wet, but she says all in all, this year’s edition was more pleasant than last year’s. Patrick takes on another listener…
In the annals of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show few builders have been as celebrated as Curtis Inglis, the man behind Inglis Cycles and Retrotec. Inglis has taken awards home more than a half dozen times from the show, due in no small part to the artful curves of…
Again, we take on some listener questions this week (you guys are killing it!). Selene takes a look at night riding and how to get past the fear of not being able to see all that much, even with the addition of lights. She also gives her take on the…
My history with Brad Devaney goes back more than 30 years to Memphis, Tennessee, when we were both students at the University of Memphis and working as wrenches for the Peddler Bike Shop. Even then, Brad was impressive. His work was as thorough as it was efficient. After I moved…
It’s reader questions once again this week. Selene was asked how to structure a training plan so that a racer can maintain a high level of fitness year around, especially if there are six “A” events spaced throughout the season. Most training plans start from zero, and honestly, how many…
This week I’ve got a twofer for you. I’m interviewing two people responsible for creating new clothing for Pearl Izumi. Cory Hibbard is an apparel designer who has worked on a variety of products, from their BikeStyle line of casual but cycling-functional apparel to new jersey designs hitting bike shops…
Selene was recently a guest for Lovingthebike’s Bike School. She was asked a number of questions, but two memorable ones were: what is the lowest temperature you will ride in? How cold can you take it? Another was what your favorite ride distance is. How long does a ride need…
This week, my guest is Steve Hampsten, the man behind Hampsten Cycles. While Hampsten Cycles may draw its fame from Steve’s brother Andy, the only American winner of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de Suisse, Steve has been in the bike industry for more than 30 years. He has worked…
This week we take on a veritable buffet of reader questions. Selene opens with oval chainrings, moves on to whether or not frame material matters, why there aren’t more Clydesdale categories in races and winds up with the age-old question of whether or not your choice of chain lube matters…
In the second part of my conversation with photographer Brian Vernor, we talk about storytelling through photography as well as photography when it is in service to a written feature. We also discuss the difference between commercial work and editorial work and how storytelling is a more compelling way to…
You’d think eating is easy. We’ve all been doing it longer than we can remember. But eating on the bike while pedaling hard enough to make people miss the couch isn’t easy. If it was, we wouldn’t be getting listeners asking about how best to execute so they don’t bonk….
On this week’s show, my guest is photographer, writer and filmmaker Brian Vernor. For many cycling aficionados, Brian Vernor came to prominence as a result of his work with Rapha here in the U.S. His photography seemed to capture the experience of being a cyclist and doing the hard miles…
This week Selene veers into gymnastics. Don’t worry, she’s got a good reason. Perhaps you’ve seen the video of UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi’s perfect-10 performance. Selene muses on body image, what it means to be supported and guided, and ways in which we evaluate our bodies that don’t do us…
In the second part of my interview with veteran framebuilder Dave Kirk, we talk about the last phase of his career with Serotta, and then his move west to Bozeman, Montana, where he opened his own shop. This interview takes a really deep dive into fillet brazing and the finer…
My guest this week is Dave Kirk, the man behind Kirk Frameworks. The path to becoming a skilled framebuilder isn’t set. I’ve met masters who apprenticed under legends. I’ve met geniuses who chafed under menial tasks at big productions houses and left to figure it out for themselves. I’ve met…
This week Patrick and Selene take on two reader requests. First up is an explanation of flow states; Patrick begins with a definition of what constitutes flow and how to identify the experience as well as an explanation of why it feels so incredible. He also goes into the neuroscience…
It’s the new year and it’s a time to establish what the next 12 months will bring. Selene took a look at her year-end summary from Strava and was amazed by her totals. Nearly 8500 miles ridden, more than 600 hours spent on the bike and enough climbing to Everest…
“Spun” was an antidote to the driest of eyes. It was the story of Judi (nee Rothenberg) and Dominic LoPresti, two ex-junkies who had cleaned up, relapsed, cleaned up again and against the longest of odds, met, fell in love, and in the least likely of all turns, stayed clean,…
Winter is here, huh? Selene takes on some of the challenges of winter riding, lot least of which is staying warm on rides. She talks skin care, cloverleaf routes and something that may not seem like a typical winter topic: single speeding. She says there’s a logic to it this…
The Colorado Classic has announced a big change. It’s a women’s race now. Only a women’s race. With a new course and new prize list and a plan to livestream the race on Facebook, the Colorado Classic will be very different in 2019. It’s an intriguing change in direction and…
Jeremy SyCip is a real-life fantasy. He began college with an eye toward industrial design but quickly realized he wanted to be more hands-on. So he took a course in framebuilding at United Bicycle Institute. His teacher for the class? None other than Albert Eisentraut, arguably the most important builder…
Selene and Patrick open the show with an appreciation of broadcaster Paul Sherwen who passed away earlier this week. Sherwen was more than just a broadcaster; he was a pro rider in the 1980s as well as a media liaison for teams and PR specialist for races. Selene talked to…
On this week’s episode, we continue our interview with Carl Strong. Strong is unusual among framebuilders in that he has constructed bikes in every mainstream material being used in high-performance bikes: steel, aluminum, titanium and now carbon fiber in his new venture Pursuit by Carl Strong. In part two Carl…
Unless you’re racing cyclocross, the off season is here. Selene says she’s done her last event of the year and has recently returned to the gym for strength training. He gym routine may surprise you, but she says it’s what most cyclists ought to be doing when they are trying…
On this week’s show, my guest is frame builder Carl Strong. The Bozeman, Montana-based builder behind Strong Frames is best known for the titanium road and gravel frames he makes from titanium, something he’s been doing for more than 20 years. Recently, though, Strong launched a new venture, called Pursuit…
It’s November (you may have noticed) and that means that unless you’re at the height of your cyclocross season, November can present challenges in terms of motivation for workouts, and is the point in the year when finding time to ride in daylight can be a challenge if you normally…
Patrick is back from his trip to Taiwan. While there he attended a trade show, rode a few ebikes, did a bike tour down the eastern coast of Taiwan and then visited a series of factories. He even managed to squeeze in a group ride. Before the jetlag sets in…
Veteran Sarah Lee says she faced a choice. Figure out how to reconnect with her nation following her military service … or kill herself. Fortunately for her, and her many compatriots and fellow vets, she found a way to reconnect with her nation. She decided to ride coast to coast…
How hard would it be to climb the height of Mount Everest in a single ride? That is, riding until you climbed 29,029 feet. So what about Everesting on Mount Everest? If there’s a more difficult way to tackle that feat, it hasn’t occurred to us. Selene interviewed Shannon Bufton…
On this week’s show, my guest is writer and editor Peter Flax. Flax was features editor for the Hollywood Reporter. Flax is also a contributor to CyclingTips where he writes on a wide range of cycling culture topics. He is probably best known to cyclists as the former editor in…
Let’s talk about dressing for cold weather riding. How important is humidity in how you dress? Should 45 degree weather result in the same kit selection regardless of where you live? Maybe not. Selene digs into this with a funny story about some recent transplants who are struggling to adjust….
So just what is gravel? What should a gravel ride be? Should it include singletrack? Should there be creek crossings? What is reasonable for a person to expect when they sign up for an event and just what should a promoter be obligated to communicate to attendees? Selene has events…
Rebecca Rusch has what may be the ultimate nickname not just for a cyclist, but for any endurance athlete. She’s known as the Queen of Pain. And she has more than earned that nickname. She has won the Leadville 100 four times. She set the record for the Kokopelli Trail,…
For pro teams, finding sponsors and keeping said sponsors happy is more difficult than ever before. This week Selene takes a look at the new strategy from EF Education First-Drapac-Rapha. They have announced that they will be taking on some events that aren’t part of the World Tour, which means we…
Have you ever ridden across the country? It is one of those things that many of us have considered, and most of us haven’t found either the time or the motivation to do it. Selene encountered a vet named Sarah Lee who rode from the East Coast to the Golden…
Everesting. It’s a thing now, as we say. And Selene is a bit obsessed with the idea of doing one. Then she ran across a group that went to Everest Everest. How meta. How quintessential. How unbeatable. Image: Matthias Magg Patrick is back from Interbike and is afraid grandma might…
On this week’s show, my guest is Mike Ferrentino. In the early 1990s Ferrentino rose to national prominence with the launch of Bike Magazine and his column the Grimy Handshake. Since then, Ferrentino has gone on to help found the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship and directed marketing for Santa Cruz Bicycles. These days he’s in […]
Selene has a dilemma. She lives in a town with amazing riding culture and plenty of people to ride with. However. (There’s always a however, isn’t there?) Her favorite riding buddy is injured. He injured his ankle and is off the bike. And now she’s discovered that she, like so…
On this week’s show, we continue our conversation with Erik Noren of Peacock Groove. Last week we talked about some of Noren’s signature creations like his Evil Dead bike and his Appetite for Destruction bike. While those works generated some controversy, much of this week’s show will focus on a…
Forget ‘cross is coming. ‘Cross is here. Last weekend, Labor Day Weekend for crying out loud, the first big race of the season was held in Delaware—Granogue. And yet, it was hotter than than the seat in a Congressional hearing. Considering cyclocross was invented as a winter sport to keep…
Among the many builders I’ve interviewed in my career, I can say that Erik Noren is truly unique. In a room full of unusual cats, he still manages to stand alone. This episode, and the next, because honestly, the conversation was that long and too interesting to chop into a…
Selene is away at Rebecca’s Private Idaho, competing in the event’s new stage race that runs from August 30 to September 2. So rather than our usual show, we’re taking the opportunity to give you the full interview that she recorded with Hanna Grant, chef and author of Eat. Race…
On this week’s show we remember frame builder Dario Pegoretti who died last week at the age of 62. Pegoretti rose to prominence in the 1990s as a contract builder who provided custom frames for professional racers painted to look like the sponsor’s bike. He was so respected he built…
How neat a home do you keep? Do you do it all—cook, clean, ride 12 hours a week and write poetry before bed? As it turns out, we don’t either. This week Selene takes on the notion of doing it all, of having the clean house, the home repairs repaired,…
The emergence of HIA Velo, the parent company of Allied Cycle Works, is notable as much for the quality of the carbon fiber bicycles they make as where they make them. At a time when all of the major bike makers produce their carbon fiber bikes in Asia, Allied has…
How do you eat? This isn’t a question about whether or not you chew, but what do you fuel with? Selene talked to Hannah Grant, the author of Eat. Race. Win. a book all about fueling for cyclists, and for that matter, endurance athletes. We excerpt a piece of her…
Few people can claim to be as inextricably linked with the birth of mountain biking as Gary Fisher. His company MountainBikes produced what were arguably the very first production mountain bikes, before he went on to found Gary Fisher Bikes, which he later sold to Trek. Though Trek has stopped…
Selene has a dilemma: Some people don’t much like cyclists. What to do? You’re riding on a bike path where pedestrians and cyclists need to coexist, hopefully peacefully, but you need to pass. Do you ring a bell? Do you call, “On your left”? Do you fly by them at…
In Part II of my conversation with Mark DiNucci, we discuss some of the work he has done as an engineer working on contract for other manufacturers, like SAPA and Evil. We go into greater depth about his building today, including the tubeset and lugset he designed for his bikes,…
If you wanted to find the American who made the most profound impact on the ride of steel road bikes in the last 30 years, it would be hard to find a person more influential than Mark DiNucci. As an engineer for Specialized Bicycle Components, he was instrumental in creating…
Our man Patrick fell down this past weekend while on a mountain bike ride. Slid out and has the road rash souvenir. As crashes go, it’s a minor one, but it has encouraged a bit of reflection. How should one consider the consequences of crashing? And how should consideration of…
This week Selene poses an interesting question: How much riding do you need each week to be healthy both mentally and physically? Researchers at the University of Sydney published a study tracking 1500 healthy adults over the age of 49 for 10 years to find out what the optimal amount…
On this week’s show, my guest is Nick Legan, the author of Gravel Cycling, from VeloPress. Legan has one of the more varied backgrounds I’ve encountered in cycling. He began his career as a race mechanic, first working for Slipstream Sports and then working for Lance Armstrong’s Radio Shack team….
This week we take a look at the women and racing. There are some high points worth celebrating—Trek has created a new women’s pro team—and a whole lot of low lights, like podium girls. Selene and Patrick take a look at some of the criticisms of women’s racing as well…
On this week’s show, my guest is James Winchester, the product manager for Masi Bicycles. The role of a product manager at a bike company is, perhaps, one of the most visible expressions of what it is to work for a bike company. They are responsible for determining what a…
Selene has a dilemma. She’s watching the Tour de France. And enjoying it. She’s concerned that maybe she shouldn’t be enjoying it or that she should be more concerned about the doping or how awfully the UCI is running the sport. It seems a guilty pleasure and she’s not sure…
On this week’s show, my guest is Lennard Zinn, whose book, Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance, has just been released in its sixth edition by VeloPress. Zinn is best known for his work as technical editor for VeloNews, but he joined the magazine more than 20 years…
It’s summer, irrevocably so. Unless you live in Honduras, you may be struggling to deal with the heat. For all the talk that cycling is the perfect thing to do on a summer day, it is, as we say, easier said than done. Selene discusses how she can do well…
For as much as American cyclists idolized Greg LeMond in the 1980s and early 1990s, for a great many years there was really only one book on the three-time Tour de France Winner, “Greg LeMond’s Complete Book of Bicycling.” And while it included a fascinating look inside the 1986 Tour…
On this week’s show, my guest is framebuilder Todd Ingermanson who is part of a relatively rare set of artisans known for crafting nearly any sort of bike. While many builders base their business on mostly (or even exclusively) doing just one thing, such as road bikes, Ingermanson, under his…
Patrick is just back from several days in Ketchum, Idaho, where he attended a new media event called CrankTank. There were presentations by a number of exhibitors on everything from socks to ebikes. He details a few of the items that caught his fancy while there. You’ve probably heard of…
How much do you know about bearings? This week Patrick went to Oakland to visit the folks at Enduro Bearings and talk about how precision bearings have improved how a bicycle performs. He got an apples to apples comparison of how ball bearing quality has improved as well as an…
On this week’s show, my guest is teacher, author and creator Kristen Ulmer. In the early 1990s Ulmer rose to international prominence as the world’s foremost female big mountain extreme skier. It’s a status she held for an astonishing 12 years. Able to huck any cliff and ski die-if-you-fall lines,…
Our guest for this episode is Alison Tetrick who finished third this year at the Dirty Kanza 200, inarguably one of the world’s toughest gravel events. This is the full interview we excerpted on last week’s episode of the Paceline. Alison burst onto the gravel scene last year a relative…
On this week’s show, my guest is framebuilder Brad Bingham. He’s been called the finest TIG-welder in the world. Bingham rose to international prominence as a result of his work as a welder for Kent Eriksen Cycles. He has won the best welding award at the North American Handmade Bicycle…
We knew even before the race was over that we would be talking to Yuri Hauswald about his adventure at the new 350-mile version of Dirty Kanza, known as the DKXL. How could we not? The 2015 winner of Dirty Kanza is as warm an interview as we get and…
Last weekend’s Dirty Kanza introduced a new length, the DKXL, a 350-mile version of the unofficial world championship of gravel racing. In this episode we talk about both the 350 and the 250 and excerpt two coming interviews with Yuri Hauswald, who finished 2nd in the DKXL and Alison Tetrick,…
On this week’s show, my guest is Damon Rinard, the engineering manager for road bikes for Cycling Sports Group. Rinard has more than 30 years’ experience in the bike industry. He came to prominence as a result of his work for Cervelo where he was instrumental not just in developing…
Cycling is a great way to both enjoy the journey and the destination. Put another way it makes getting there fun. But how important should goals be? Are goals like finishing an event or standing on the podium the end in itself or just a means to an end? And…
Allen Lim has spent his career guiding athletes to their best possible performance. From the UC Davis Cycling Team to grand tour riders, Lim’s career as an exercise physiologist was focused on helping solve problems athletes had. Nearly accidentally, Lim began making his own drink mix to help athletes, and…
After a brief hiatus, the Paceline is back in a slightly different format. Fatty has a new Leadville podcast he’s producing, and as one of only eight people to complete Leadville 20 times, there is arguably no one better to produce a podcast devoted to all things Leadville. Hottie has…
This week I interview NAHBS Best in Show winner Gabriel Lang of Altruiste Bikes from New Brunswick, Canada. Lang won with a long-travel 29er that was truly unique among the bikes shown at the show. In this, our second episode, we talk to him about his background as a builder,…
The Pull is a new podcast from Red Kite Prayer. My many interviews with framebuilders over the years have all lost something in translation from the conversation to the printed page (or pixels). I spent years dissatisfied with the outcome and honestly, reduced the number of interviews I did because…
I first read Bicycling Magazine editor Selene Yeager’s work in the 1990s. Having edited the work of health and fitness writers, I knew what good work looked like and hers was exemplary. She did a remarkable job of balancing the science side of things with the dimensions that are curious…
Down is up and up is underground. Our man Hottie, formerly the leanest man in masters bike racing has portlied himself up to a whopping 165 lbs! What to do! He confesses that without all the group rides and races, plus a bit more beer than he used to allow…
Hottie took off with Mrs. Hottie for a bike-packing trip. Only they didn’t camp out and sleep in sleeping bags. They stayed in a hotel. He thinks Mrs. Hottie brought too much stuff. But just how much is too much? And for that matter, how little is too minimal? …
What’s the craziest experience you’ve had in a bike race or event? Hottie puts this question to Fatty and Patrick and while they share some stuff you might not want to duplicate, their experiences comes up lame when compared to Hottie’s guest. Elon Rubin of Giant Santa Monica is Israeli…
Fatty had an unfortunate encounter with another cyclist recently. Actually, the unfortunate part of the encounter was between his big dog Duke and one of the dogs following behind the other ride attacked Duke. Took a souvenir out of poor Duke’s ear. What do you do in that circumstance? He’s…
Vacation. It’s such a loaded term. Is it time away from work? Time away from home? Is it recreation? Can it be a vacation without a bicycle? Hottie recently reviewed four different bike travel cases and decided to put the question to Fatty and Patrick of what their tips are…
It’s a podcast about bikes, so it’s no surprise that our hosts like to ride new bikes. And great bikes. And sometimes crazily expensive bikes, like the $15,300 Argonaut that Hottie had a chance to ride recently. In a world where we all joke about the correct number of bikes…
Where do you come from? Not, where were you born, or where did you grow up, but how were you birthed as a cyclist? This week Fatty tells how he got into cycling and asks Patrick and Hottie what got them into the sport. And despite a concussion on his…
How much work do you do on your bike? Are you the type who doesn’t let anyone else touch your bike and it gets a tune-up monthly, or do you turn it over to a trusted mechanic tipped in hoppy beverages? Or are you somewhere in between? Hottie discusses a…
This week Fatty, Hottie and Patrick are joined by a special guest. Yuri Hauswald is a former winner of Dirty Kanza, a Camelbak-sponsored athlete and a marketing pro with GU Energy Labs. He joins the boys to talk about the suggestion that cyclists should boycott Giro, Bell, Blackburn, Camelbak and…
Our man Patrick is back from the North American Handmade Bicycle Show and has stories to tell. As chief judge he, with the help of fellow judges Tom Kellogg (yes, that Tom Kellogg of Spectrum Cycles) and veteran mechanic to the stars, Merlyn Townley, inspected more than 100 different submissions…
Maybe it’s the gloominess of February, but the Paceline hosts — Patrick, Hottie, and Fatty — have some pretty serious topics this week…though they don’t necessarily approach those topics in a serious way (not all of them, at least). Hottie’s watching the Olympics, but can’t help but wonder about the…
Let’s talk dogs. No, not those furry lumps of love that drool on (or sometimes eat) your shoes. We’re talking feet. Do you have problems with your feet? Do cycling shoes give you trouble? If so, you’ll want to listen in to Fatty’s pull, which is all about his trouble…
The boys are back with another three-pull episode. Up first is Hottie and he asks, have you ever regretted a bicycle purchase? Not the money you spent, but the bicycle itself? Have you ever decided you invested in the wrong bike? Fatty is concerned about riding ugly. Between his namesake…
Peter Flax is the editor in chief of The Red Bulletin, the 10-times-per-year magazine from energy drink maker Red Bull. He is also the former editor-in-chief for Bicycling Magazine, features editor for The Hollywood Reporter and a contributing writer to CyclingTips as well as RKP. For the three plus years…
Someone smart told the boys that most podcasts don’t ever produce 100 episodes, so this one is a bit of a milestone. We’re not sure if they’re too determined to quit or too clueless to know when to stop. Milestones aside, they take 100 seconds (give or take) to favorite…
This week we switch our format up a bit with each of the guys taking one hard pull. Up first is Hottie with a confession. For the first time in roughly 20 years he isn’t taking out a USAC license. Hottie says he’s got several reasons for not renewing: less…

Fatty has been vacationing and says his kits don’t fit. In the spirit of truth in advertising, we’re actually pretty relieved. A skinny Fatty is not a fatty, right? Recently, he went with the Hammer to St. George, Utah, for some riding. Misadventure ensued. In other news, how important is…
Jake Pantone, Director of Marketing and Product at ENVE Composites Jake Pantone is a cycling success story. He started at ENVE lacing wheels and taking customer support phone calls—often at the same time. So the fact that he’s now the marketing and product director is no small thing. In this…

Cold and flu season. That’s what we call it, right? As if it were restricted to a few months of the year like maple sugaring or cyclocross Nordic skiing. No matter how long it’s meant to last, it’s here once again and while Hottie’s rides are getting longer, Patrick is off…
Now that it’s the off season the boys are dreaming of bike purchases. Fatty wants a full-suspension cross-country bike for when he does Breck Epic next year. Hottie finally purchased a gravel-oriented frameset and even Patrick admits that he’s considering trimming one from his arsenal to add something else. This…
Thanksgiving is here and with it the need to preemptively burn calories. Of course, before they get to that, Fatty has a wound to clean. Hottie is back on the bike and Patrick wonders if his number is up next. Do you have a bucket list? A buddy of Hottie’s…
Running. On a cycling podcast. What is the world coming to? Well, it is that time of year, thanks to cyclocross and, in some places, inclement weather. Hottie and Fatty admit they’ve turned to the dark side, at least some. Patrick? Off mic he said he’d rather get dental work….
We discuss Halloween and costumes, and how cycling clothing is a costume of its own. Friends of Fatty’s (FoF) used some bike tubes to make a killer Thor costume. Fatty dressed up as Superman (or something like him) and they want for a ride called Helloween. His friend who dressed…
In the Paceline Tandem episode #2, Fatty has two great conversations with people who are doing amazing things with bikes. First, he talks with Decker—a high school senior who loves mountain biking, and is one of the nicest, most positive kids you’ll ever meet. Decker tells the story of an…
We open with discussion of the Santa Rosa fires and how they are affecting the local cycling community. Our man on the scene reports he is back home after a week in West County, and nearly everything he placed with other friends is back home as well. The family—both humans…
Phil Gaimon sits in on this edition of the Paceline. He plays along with all our normal antics: The Very Important Question and Paceline Picks. But what he really wants to talk about (and so do we) is his new book, “Draft Animals: Living the Pro Dream.” You’re going to…

We’ve got our results from last week’s Very Important Question: would you still ride if you forgot your helmet at home and drove to the ride start. Patrick checks in from Las Vegas and the Interbike trade show. It sounds like he’s happy he won’t be going back there anymore….
In our first VIQ (Very Important Question) we asked you, our audience, which foot you place forward when descending. We assumed most riders would indicate they put their left foot forward. We got an amazing 516 responses, so a pretty solid sample. As it happens Fatty, Hottie and Patrick all ride…
Patrick is away in Tennessee working on a feature for Bicycling Magazine on Memphis. Memphis’ fortunes have changed in the last few years and the city has made a huge investment in infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. Patrick says this has made the city wholly more livable and infinitely more…
Fatty had a meeting with a doctor that gave him an unusual frame of mind for this show. The colonoscopy made him hungry and maybe a little freer with his opinions. Some of those opinions regard his feelings about his performance at a new event called The Punisher. Apparently the…
So what do you do at the end of the season when you have massive fitness and all your goals achieved or finished? Fatty is busy compiling a new late-season race schedule now that he’s flying, post Leadville. As cyclists, we’ve all experienced stuff breaking, right? That just happens, part…

Fatty crashed and got a big raspberry on his hip. Went down on a wet descent right by a spot cyclists call Hamilton Falls because Tyler Hamilton fell there during the Tour of Utah. The staff here thinks they want to avoid that road at all cost. In the fall,…
The Tour de France is into its final days and Chris Froome looks likely to win. With Fatty away on a job interview, Patrick and Hottie hold down the fort and discuss Froome, Team Sky, (Sir) David Brailsford, journalist hostility and parallels to another episode in history. Patrick even suggests…
Fatty and Hottie went to Beaver, Utah, to partake in the wonderfulness known as the Crusher in the Tushar. Good suffering was had by all. Imagine an event that goes uphill more than downhill. Or don’t. It doesn’t sound easy, or fun. Fatty and Hottie interview organizer Burke Swindlehurst about…
With Peter Sagan’s recent expulsion from the Tour de France, all of social media has blown up with whether or not he caused Mark Cavendish’s crash and what the appropriate action, if any, was warranted. As our man Patrick put it, “Pinning all of the problems of that sprint on…
PressCamp took place in Park City last week and our man Patrick was in attendance. We open the show with his reporting on a few of the bikes he rode there. He checked out the new to the U.S. brand Factor, a new aero road bike from 3T, plus two…
Everyone is back in their usual chairs this week, thank heaven. Fatty is just back from the Vision Relay, an event he’s been waiting for all season, and frankly, we at the Paceline have been waiting for him to do. He and his team kicked butt, but not enough butts. Say…
Patrick is back from Dirty Kanza and while there may be no place like home, he says there’s no place quite like Emporia. Fatty is away on business, so it’s the duo of Pattie and Hottie (Patrick/Padraig is going to hate that.) for yet another show. Patrick fills us in…

What’s the best part of being on a team? Fatty has a favorite feature, and it’s not going fast or the camaraderie. Though they haven’t yet named their team, their quartet knocked out a stunningly quick century last weekend with the blessing of Coach Max Fat, aka Jonathan Vaughters. A trip…
To say we’re a man down isn’t quite enough. Hottie just started a new job and Fatty is buried under mountains of software code, or something. So our man Padraig took this one mostly on his own. We open with a discussion (monologue?) of last weekend’s Milan-San Remo and Peter…
Fatty went on vacation and his weight went up in equal proportion to his fun. What’s up with that? And after getting back he went to St. George and the True Grit Epic … and his race ended before it really even started. Fatty also checks in with his personal coach, Jonathan…
