Two enneagram 8's take you inside the armour.

8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● We've heard you all have a lot of trouble with 2s. This is an example of how awesome they can be in friendship. They are the soft landing we rarely get.
8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● We found a 1 we like!!!! Kate's mom, Jan, talks about raising an 8 and why she often felt like she lost every battle. But, she also shares that her 8 daughter was/is her greatest encouragement as well.
8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● Jo's little sister is a type 9, and she's SO grateful for that. Jo always knew what to do, and said so. Katie (type 9): "I kinda like being told what to do." Enough said right there.
8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● Jo lost her very best 8-friend when her mom died seven years ago, but now she's gained a handful of 8 bestfriends/siblings through this community. Thomas (from episode #30) has become an extra brother to Jo at this point. Hear why it's a natural fit to do life with other (healthy) 8s.
8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● Friends Eryn (with a y) and Erin (with an i) reflect on the high energy, high joy relationship they share, and how the safe and gentle "push" of an 8 helped a hurting 7 stop to take care of her tattered wings.
8s IN RELATIONSHIP ● Lifelong friends Eryn and Julia firm up her type, and then chat about the ways both Eryn and Julia's type-8 husband compliment and contrast with Julia's 6ness.
8s IN RELATIONSHIPS ● This one's for you 8 parents out there trying to raise a 5 kiddo and feeling like the more you try to move towards them the less accessible they become. This episode will teach you what not to do when raising a type 5. But it'll also encourage you that, in the end, our 5s would choose us every time. They love sheltering under our wing, so to speak, and riding off our powerful up-draft. Meanwhile, our 5s make us better thinkers and wiser decision makers.
I guarantee you've had this happen to you. You're having a nice chat with someone and suddenly they learn you are an enneagram 8 and they exclaim in surprise "No way! I never would have guessed." And you're left wondering what they think an 8 even is, because you're just being you. This season, maybe we'll find out. In this episode, we take an educated guess as to what each type thinks we 8s get right and what we get wrong.
This is basically a really long, social hangout-- which makes sense. Bonus: A lot of talk of about Type 1s, and some fan-girling about Brene Brown.
Four Self-Preservation 8s join us for a panel episode on the Self-Preservation instinct.
An informal chitchat between Jo (SX 8) and Lamar (SP 8) about the way each others' instincts have hurt us in the past.
As a Self Preserving with 2 in her tritype, Lisa is the mama bear of our little 8 community. The guardian and cheerleader. She holds the line for us all and we appreciate it.
Lamar introduces us to the concept of a Self-Preservation "resource engine" or "resource machine." He also assured us that the words "Skills" and "Deals" are very fine words indeed to a Self-Preserving 8.
This episode ended up highlighted really clearly the difference between an 8 with SX first versus an 8 with SX last. Jess and Jo press in at totally different points in a situation, taking on very different roles.
Amanda is our 835 from episode 46. We had her back to talk about what it's like to have Social as her first instinct, Sexual as her second, and Self-Preservation as her blindspot.
Drew is our second SX8 with the same stacking as Jo. He thinks his tritype might be 864. SX8 energy is often associated with female energy because of its intensely keyed-in, relational vibe, so we're glad Drew helps set the records straight.
Our very own Enneagram 8 Pod slumber party with Kate Brennan gave us the perfect opportunity to do an interview on the Sexual instinct. All three of us have similar tritypes, but we found it was the shared Sexual instinct that made Kate and Jo most similar. You'll hear that for yourself in this episode.
You're blind to your last instinct for a reason: To consider it is to let go of the death grip you have on your most basic way of surviving in the world. Do you dare consider there might be another way to live?
Just in case you didn't have enough to sort out: 9 types, 9 tritype combos, three instincts and NOW a variety of ways those instincts can mix and match with all of the above.
Season 3: Mini season on Instincts. Social, Sexual, Self-Preservation. Three OTHER lenses on the world that kind of change everything.

We heard from enough of you to know that difference between a good Christmas and a terrible Christmas is the boundaries we set as 8’s. It’s counter intuitive to think 8’s don’t have good boundaries but our big hearts often get in the way…
No better way to wrap up our season on Tritype than with an interview with Katherine Fauvre herself.
Casey is go go go. When she's not running triathlons or travelling, she's advocating for students and staff as a school counselor. Listening to this podcast will give you a clear picture of the unmatched energy behind the "Mover and Shaker" Tritype.

Stacie. Tritype 836. She loves a good debate, and has the chops for it, but when it comes to expressing something simple like "that hurt my feelings," she'd rather throw up.

Amanda. Tritype 864. "I go into every situation with a level of distrust. You have to earn that trust. I’m not in the group, just observing. I’ve always longed to be part of the group, but never felt part of it. And then I get cynical as to why and I go down that rabbit hole and it’s depressing."
Celeste. Tritype 847. We wake up every morning dazzled by the day. No such thing as being bored with an 847. Between the 8s drive to do and keep moving, the 4s contentment splashing around in the deep depths of our thoughts and emotions all day long, and the 7s playful restlessness and eagerness to jump at every opportunity that presents itself, we are truly some of the most carpe diem individuals on earth.
Celeste. Tritype 847. Celeste is the last 847 interview that we will be doing this season. as I had expected she had so many good words around what it’s like to be us. She said that one time a guy she knew told her that she was a "non-joiner." 8s with that kind of lone, introspective 4 tacked on— we’re in the group but that doesn’t mean we’ve actually joined it. She also says we have no tolerance for cognitive dissonance, if it doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t fit we’re not going to smile and pretend that it does. We're grateful we can access 7. We wake up every morning absolutely dazzled by the day. There’s no such thing as being bored for an 847. We’ve got to be some of the most carpe diem individuals on Earth.
Chelsea. Tritype 853. Venus fly trap, the ultimate predator, whale-whisperer… The are all terms that can be used for Chelsea, and I’m pretty confident they can be applied to all 835s. Chelsea‘s friends joke that she has a way of Shamuing them— training behaviour to get the outcome she wants. Between the magnetism of the 8, the adaptable shininess of the 3, and the wealth of data points that come from five as they observe other people, these 8s draw in whoever they want to draw in (and steer clear of whoever they want to steer clear of.) All the skills they have at their disposal they use to assess who they want to come closer and who they want to keep at a distance. They are extremely effective at it. And while it sounds a little scary and manipulative we know what’s at the heart of an 8. It’s about feeling free, independent, like we’re steering our own ship. This is really about these 8s wanting to be safe. Postscript for your episode: “I know this is not for a grade, but the overanalyzing, overachieving part of me wants to let you know what I decided I want 8s to know-I read a quote once saying “I suppose a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last.” I think (especially with an 8-3-+ tritype) we tend to go pretty hard, nonstop, and it’s okay to slow down, it’s okay to take care of yourself. That’s what I would say ❤️🔥"
Carrie. Tritype 837. When you need an app to remind you to breathe, you probably have a lot of forward energy going on in you. Carrie is a quintessential Mover and Shaker. All movement, no pause.

Tori. Tritype 862. "The Rescuer" has been scrapped for "The Shield." This tritype might be the one that is most at war with it's soft gooey center. (One of you once called it a gooey lava cake). They are very very aware it's there, and very very unhappy at the idea it might show. And so, in many ways, the sheild they use to protect others, they use to protect themselves too. In the words of our podcast tagline: "Letting you inside the armour" is the work of all of us 8s.

Isaac. Tritype 845. Some 8s slam a wall down on the dark and the negative. Others 8s, like Isaac, slam the wall down on the light, bright and the positive. The common denominator is the wall. 8s are good at walls. This one's for all of our 8s who are a haven to those that have inner monsters that scare them. Isaac and other 8s of this tritype aren't afraid of monsters, or the darkness. (Note: Due to spotty internet, this episode sounds a bit different. We had to splice in re-recorded audio later.)

Megan. Tritype 836. Teacher, beach lifeguard, event planner, aspiring park ranger, and soon-to-be member of law enforcement, this girl is a doer of many things. But the theme she sees in it all is a duty and competency. She is dutifully the VERY BEST at all the things she does. This is another of the most reactive tritypes, but most of it stays inside. Her 3 keeps her aware of "the game" that the group is playing, which mitigates some of the fallout. But, every now and then, the verbal bombs still go off and stuff gets blown up.

Yentl (rhythms with gentle). Tritype 846. We laugh at the irony of a name that rhythms with one thing this tritype has the hardest time being. As a truth teller, Yentl is made to track inconsistencies, hone in on falseness, and to SAY IT. Even gentle people get flack for calling out hidden truth, so imagine how lonely these 8s can be sometimes. We reflected on the gift of a simple conversation between two 8s, and how, for an hour, two strangers could hold space for each other and understand.

Tereza. Tritype 846. Triple reactive and about as intense as they come, this is the tritype that gets thrown the most shade. More than any other 8s, they SAY THE THING. They are always tracking inconsistencies and falseness around them, and when they spot it they let us all know. This makes a a lot of people A LOT of uncomfortable. But, sometimes a thing just has to be said, and Tereza will say it! Including this: "Lions aren't brave. It's not true. They have teeth and claws. They can kill things easily. But, Guinea pigs..."

Heather. Tritype 835. Known as the quickest problem solvers, but the least in touch with their feelings. Heather’s Bio: Growing up, I spent most of my time in the 5 zone. However, I did learn early that people didn't want me to be "part of the group", so I chose early not to "fit in" and pursue my own interests. I'm a moderate jack of most trades. I'm not really great at one thing, but I am eager to explore all options or challenges. // ISTP - "like sticking jello to a wall". Not only do I not like to conform, I enjoy several different single sports [ultra-running, yoga, cross country, singles tennis]. I thought this was mainly because of my introvert side, but it could also likely be I prefer to match my own energy. I get frustrated and confused when people can't keep up with my energy. Even when I don't think I can find any, I force it to happen, so I can fulfill my 7 wing of adventure. // Protector in social work, helping people advocate for themselves. In each chance I get I teach them to "fish", so that they can more independent and learn to fight on their own eventually. I hold a conflict resolution certificate and am a certified mediator, volunteering with local courts. This is where and how I discovered the enneagram. // Faults. I stir the pot, even after I'm told not to stir the pot. Learning when not to with loved ones, but I still "die" on several hills because I'm stubborn. I'm growing drastically and interested in continuing on this path towards a healthier me in a 2 by listening to this awesome podcast and others recommended. . I will fight for those I love any day without rest! 💙

Sam. Tritype 826-- no wait, 846. This is an example of how it takes time and work to figure out your tritype. When we first interviewed Samantha, she attributed her drive to help people to 2, when it was really a function of her 8, plus Social instinct. Her knack (and affinity) for identifying and expressing her own feelings made it pretty clear in the end that her heart is all 4. It's ok to try on tritype for awhile before you find home. Shadow Layer #4: Moving towards is baked right into our brains. We use the part of our brain that deals with fight response, immediacy, reactivity. We are willing to DO fight. "Health is moving from the exaggeration to integration... 16:30 "A lot of times, for 8s, we don't move towards health until we experience pain." 18:05: Boundaries. How much do we put ourselves out there and take the hits? "Endlessly..." We have to decide if we want to become open or closed, and "I want to be really intentional that I am creating myself in [an open] direction..." Shadow Layer #2: This tough act is one of the most quintessentially 8 things. However we define strength, it plays a big role in how 8s orient themselves to the world. While we don't think strength is just an ego construct, but a tangible offering we bring to the world, problems crop up when we treat humanity like a giant boxing match (in which we always come out with the title belt). What if, rather than flexing a stronger-than-you attitude, we simply stop at this: I am strong. RESOURCES: "The Wisdom of the Enneagram" by Don Riso

Shadow Layer #1: And so we begin a long foray into the habits 8s fall into that keep them firmly settled into the heart of their personality. We can get by in life staying right there in the middle, but that isn't growth. That's staying stuck. Self Sufficiency is the allergic reaction we 8s have to being needy. We've worked hard to stand firmly on our own two feet, using a bunch of confirmation bias along the way that people let us down. You're afraid of something. Keep telling yourself you're not, and I'll keep calling you a liar. As 8s, we spend a lot of time killing our fears dead, and denying the ones we can't kill. That's not very helpful. There's something about bringing a thing to light that makes it lose it's power. So... What are you afraid of?

So many experts with so much to say about the childhood wounds that made us, but... It takes an 8 to know an 8, so we'll pick apart some quotes and see what we come up with. RESOURCES: Jo's writing piece called "Hidden Things" (Red House in the Woods Blog)

We've all heard the saying about life throwing you lemons... Well, when life threw us Eights lemons, we did NOT make lemonade. We made barricades-- some of us made really thick ones. The making of an Eight is not really a mysterious thing once you understand how our brains work. In this episode it's really clear that two little Eight girls with different childhoods both manage to mostly end up in the same place. It's really true, this Enneagram stuff.

"If I wanted to change something, why would I wait for January 1st?" This seems to be the sentiment among most of us 8s. We're up for a great party, and time well spent with friends, family & good food. But, resolutions? Nah. A new me? No thanks. Happy New Year to all of you, and happy every-other-day too!

Here's what YOU all had to say about Christmas. It was such a pleasure to put this one together. It turns out 8s even have a speech pattern: A slow, easy cadence. Enjoy this compilation of Christmas thoughts and memories from our very own 8 community.

When we asked you what you wanted to talk about for our holiday episode, the answer was RELATIONSHIPS. It seems 8s have complicated feelings about the holidays. This has everything to do with the usual interplay of our intensely relational, but autonomous selves and the people around us who don't think like we do. We answered all your questions from our vantage point, and while it might not offer any fixes, at the very least, it's our way of telling you aren't a lone. We understand.

Before we launch into a discussion about childhood wounds & 8s, we think it's important to introduce an intriguing theory called Object Relations. It suggests that we formed our type structure (in all its quirky glory) in relationship to the ways our caregivers failed to provide either the Nurture or Protection function. We explore yet another set of triads: Frustration, Attachment and Rejection. But, we dig a little deeper into what this means for 8 brains as they're shaped in those first few years.

We've gotten pretty tired of our egos. A lot of those "I ams" we've been telling ourselves don't really fit anymore. So, we're rewriting the narrative about who we really are one "I am" at a time.

You have an ego. We all do. It's all those "I am" statements you've built into your identity over the years. The 8 ego has been notoriously labelled as a big one. Maybe it is, but we insist that it's no bigger than any other type's ego. It's just a lot louder. In this episode, we name some of the "I ams" that we held on tight to in order to survive childhood. But, they're kind of getting old now. Next week we'll talk about why we need to break out of our ego rut and change the narrative about who we are. Who do you say you are? Listen in, maybe some of these will resonate.

Last week, we gave you a sense of how we interact with the enneagram. This mini episode goes a lot further. This is our "podcast white paper." Jo lays out clearly and plainly what we've chosen to build into our enneagram tool kit, and what we've discarded. She explains that faith and science and plain practicality intersect in the way we use the enneagram system. We think you'll appreciate the frankness and the clarity. We're launching into season one for real. We'll be picking apart the enneagram system piece by piece and building it back up using 8 language. We're starting with a high level discussion about how we interact with the system as a whole, what we thought about it initially, how we felt about learning we were 8s, and the quirky way we type people. We created a sister episode (coming up next) filled with our favourite books and resources. RESOURCES: The Thrive NeuroTheology Podcast (Jo's go-to)

We decided to lead with denial because IT'S A THING. 8s are absolute geniuses at denying things that just hurt too darn much to look at straight. So... we want to rip off the Band-Aid so you're wide open for the season ahead. Sound fun? We unpack an article written by fellow 8 and Enneagram Coach Cheryl McMillan about what denial is and does. This one's about Eryn. We figure that if you are going to lend us some ear time, you should know who we are, along with our particular "flavour" of 8ness. We discuss the nuts & bolts of Eryn: 8w7/SOCIAL/Tritype 827, and how life in her thirties (and all the hard things it threw her way) softened her, slowed her down, and helped her access her 9 wing. Another enneagram podcast?! Whyyyyyyy?! We'll tell you why. Also, we'll complain a bit about all the ways the world gets us wrong, but we'll set the record straight. Top resources for beginners: FINDING TYPE: RHETI Test (Best testing tool for typing. It will give you the ranking of all nine types within your personality in order of how dominant they are. Note: Your top few will help you determine your wing and tritype.) Enneagram Institute (A very comprehensive website that digs deep into each type). Art of Growth Podcast (We LOVE this one because it's a series of panel discussions. Hearing a handful of your type talk about themselves really helps clinch your type.) The usual go-to if you want simple reading is the book "The Road Back to You." WINGS: Crystal Knows (Very basic description of how a wing "flavours" your type.) INSTINCT STACKING: The Enneagrammer (A good rundown of how the order of stacking affects the way you move in the world) OceanMoonshine (The terribly-named, but very helpful site that describes each stacking). TRITYPE: Tritype is a realm of the enneagram that is only just beginning to be explored. Proceed only once you have 100% confidence in your core type. The Big Hormone Enneagram is one of the most comprehensive resourced out there on type, but I'll give a disclaimer: They are a wild and unfiltered bunch. Lots of sexual content I wish I could unhear. That said, they blow my mind every single episode. Zhuanlan (A ghetto little site that is poorly laid out, but will give you a great description of each tritype. Coming Up in episode 2: Eryn's Story. How this force of nature became the woman she is, and how the enneagram has helped her make sense of it.
