“1776” debuts on Valentine’s Day in Philly at the Forrest Theatre on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. This is a perfect show to premiere in Philadelphia of all places, almost 250 years after our founding fathers helped to shape this country. This incredible and unique revival has a whole new take on the best musical winning show. It especially has a new take on the Founding Fathers themselves. Described as “a glorious multiracial cast of female, transgender, and nonbinary actors portrays the fiery founders of this country, putting history in the hands of the humans who were left out the first time around.”
Liz Mikel who plays Ben Franklin in the show, also starred as John Hancock in the Broadway cast. She’s incredibly talented, and super sweet to talk to. Listen as Kristen speaks with Liz about the music and characters in the show, the Eagles vs. Dallas, and another topic too. The conversation takes a turn into a chat about another very familiar television role Liz played. Let’s just say she ‘smashed it”. Hint: Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t lose.

The Broadway hit Hadestown won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score AND a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. The show is headed to Philly for the first time ever on its inaugural North American tour and will be at the Academy of Music on the Kimmel Cultural Campus from Wednesday, February 9th – Sunday, February 20th. Kristen’s cousin Xavier is 15 years old, and has been playing on a wheelchair basketball team called Katie’s Komets since he was 7.
The team’s venue, the Carousel House in West Fairmount Park was slated by the city for demolition, and so the league is currently searching for a new space to play in Philadelphia. They have a fundraiser running this week to raise money for equipment, paid court time and travel expenses. If you are able to donate, they would very much appreciate every dollar toward their goal. Broadway Philadelphia is back! Anastasia is headed to Philly from November 23rd to 28th at the Merriam Theater. Kristen had a chance to catch up with Madeline Raube who plays Countess Lily in the show. Madeline was born in Camden, NJ, grew up in Hatboro, PA, and most recently resided in West Chester, PA. She’s super excited to return home to perform this week and gives all the details on the audition process, costumes, and can’t miss numbers in the show.

Steve Griffith, Public Relations Director for the Kennel Club of Philadelphia joins Kristen to give all of the details on the National Dog Show 2021.
The show runs November 20th and 21st at the Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks. Head to the National Dog Show for a day, or the whole weekend to see over 2000 dogs from over 190 different breeds. There will be agility dogs, therapy dogs, and show dogs galore. Plus, don’t miss the Saturday Thanksgiving Day TV taping, which will air on Thanksgiving Day from 12-2pm on NBC.
Due to the pandemic, this year’s National Dog Show will require proof of full COVID-19 vaccination. Tickets are $16 for adults who are vaccinated. Unvaccinated individuals, including children under the age of 12, will not be permitted entry.

Delaware County Literacy Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free literacy services to adults in Delaware County, including GED preparation, basic skills instruction, and English as a Second Language instruction. Susan Keller, Development and Communications Coordinator for the Delaware County Literacy Council gives details on the organization’s upcoming Expert Academy Online Telethon on Wednesday, October 20th.
The Expert Academy Online Telethon will feature three experts with roots in Delaware County sharing their wisdom through exciting online workshops. Catch Phil Rosenthal, creator of Everybody Loves Raymond and star of Somebody Feed Phil, who will discuss writing for TV. Also Kathy Deitch, Shin Shin from the original Broadway cast of Wicked, will share tips on how to sing in full voice. Finally, Alex Garfinkel, chef and owner of Balboa Catering in Philadelphia, will demonstrate how to prepare tapas--small dishes from Spain. Each presentation will be about 20 minutes in length.
Brad Inglesby, creator of HBO’s Mare of Easttown and Villanova alum, will also be making a special guest appearance at the event, and the 2021 Champions of Adult Literacy will be honored.

Hamilton is returning to Philadelphia! The show will be at the Academy of Music from October 20th through November 28th to kick off an amazing Broadway Philadelphia season at the Kimmel Center. Kristen had a chance to speak with Ta’Rea Campbell who plays Angelica Schuyler in the show.
Ta’Rea has played Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, Deloris in Sister Act, and performed in Book of Mormon, Little Shop of Horrors, and so many incredible shows. She’s born and raised in Philadelphia, and excited to come perform in her home town for such an extended period of time. Hear Ta’Rea talk about returning to the stage that she graduated high school on, practicing with (and without) the turntable moving stage, the lightning fast lyrics in the show, and lots more.

The Many Saints of Newark will be in theaters and streaming on HBO Max this Friday, October 1st. This full length prequel to the Sopranos series stars Michael Gandolfini (the late James Gandolfini’s son) as a teenage Tony Soprano, stepping into his father’s iconic role for the film. Alessandro Nivola plays Tony Soprano’s uncle and role model Dickie Moltisanti. The two actors recently visited Philadelphia and sat with Kristen for an interview about the film at the Bistro Romano restaurant in South Philly.
Thanks to Bistro Romano for hosting the press event. The restaurant proved to be a “Tony Soprano worthy” setting for the interviews. NBC10 Investigative reporter Claudia Vargas talks with Kristen about a local, true-crime docuseries produced by NBC10 called “Who Killed Barbara Jean?”

He talks about the history of the song and its legacy within the 76ers organization over the years. He also talks about an experience he had around 1976 when he saw a UFO on the Atlantic Expressway. He wrote a song about it called “Look to the Sky”.

Marcus and Governing Board member, Gary Jonas, will embark on a 3,700 mile ride from San Francisco to Atlantic City with the goals of raising critical funding and to bring awareness to the 750+ local children currently on the waiting list to be matched with a mentor and role model.

Philadelphia largest and most stunning outdoor and indoor restaurants and concepts will celebrate June as Philly Gay Pride Month with a month-long celebration! qFLIX Philadelphia, the region’s LARGEST LGBTQ+ film festival found itself in the position that many festivals have faced with the onset of Covid-19. Their annual festival was set to kick-off on March 22, 2020, but was postponed to the fall due to the global pandemic. Philadelphia Pride was subsequently postponed, and out of that, PrideFLIX was born. Rooted in its 26-year history, qFLIX proudly continues its tradition of sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ people.
The virtual film festival will launch on Monday, June 1 2020, and promises a stellar line up of LGBTQ+ documentaries, feature films, short films, and web series. One of the highlights will be a screening is that of gay writer/director Mike Mosallam’s rom-com, “Breaking Fast.” The film stars out actor Haaz Sleiman as Mo, a heartbroken gay Muslim who meets — and eats with — Kal (Michael Cassidy) during Ramadan. Because the Holy Month forbids impure thoughts and activities, Mo is forced to practice self-control. Mosallam’s clever conceit allows Mo and Kal to fall in love as their relationship develops over numerous romantic meals and dates. Sleiman and Mosallam, who were to be honored for their work at the fest in March, have been invited to participate in a post-screening talkback via zoom on June 29 along with Seth Hauer, the film’s producer. Several of the films will include talkbacks with filmmakers and/or talent. In addition, PrideFLIX is planning a weekly moderated discussion of specific titles on Sunday nights in June to help foster a sense of community during this period of social distancing.

Every year in June, Sofitel Philadelphia announces a year-round benefit for a local LGBTQ charity. During the entire month of June, and through the rest of 2021, Sofitel Philadelphia will donate one dollar per each banquet menu item designated with the WWCC's logo on the menu. Showcasing the works of 28 artists from the Philadelphia area, Moving Forward When the World Stopped: Queer Life 2020-2021 presents a timeline of events, memories, and experiences from the past year. The pain of suffering through the pandemic, the shifts in our relationship with technology, the immense amount of loss, the calls to action, and our strength to carry on as a community are all themes explored by artists of this show.
During this long period of uncertainty, there were times we found comfort in the care of others, through loved ones, and through members of our communities. We’ve seen the artistic landscape change completely, with in-person shows adjusting, shifting to online formats, and many artists spending more time at home, embracing new mediums.
There is no singular way to describe this past year’s traumatic experience just as there is no singular way to depict or process such events. It is together as a community that we can begin to rebuild and maintain a renewed sense of hope.

Philly AIDS Thrift, in collaboration with Philadelphia Film Society, presents a special Philly Gay Pride Month drive-in movie with Female Trouble on Wednesday, June 2nd. The 1974 cult classic by John Waters stars the one and only Divine - and the drive-in event will feature Divine-esque drag queens greeting and thanking all the movie-goers. Proceeds from the event will help raise money for a major building expansion that will include a brand-new donation intake center that means more donations can safely be taken in, producing more sales and even more grants to local nonprofits helping people with HIV/AIDS. Tickets for the drive-in movie are $35 per car, and include access to the movie, food trucks and a chance to win fun door prizes. The drive-in movie lot opens at 8:00pm, with the movie starting at 9:00pm. Female Trouble runs for 89 minutes. Philadelphia School of Circus Arts celebrates Philly Gay Pride with a free circus workshop for LGBTQIA teens on Saturday, June 12th, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. While PSCA’s classes, workshops, and events are always open to ALL, PSCA wanted to make this Pride Month extra special for the LGBTQIA Teen Community! In this 1.5 hour workshop, PSCA’s LGBTQIA Staff & LGBTQIA Staff Allies will introduce Teens to the Circus Arts by teaching the basics of Aerial Sling, Static Trapeze, Tumbling, Juggling, and Tightwire. The last half hour of the workshop will be dedicated to a Cyr Wheel performance and Q&A with recent graduate of Circadium School of Contemporary Circus, Alexandra Feit. Teens will leave feeling inspired, empowered, and connected to new circus friends. Masks are required to be worn at all times, and social distancing will be in effect in the space. Alexandra Feit grew up in northern New Jersey, the eldest of three. From a young age, she loved performing: she started singing in elementary school, and as her interests broadened, she explored a cappella, marching band, and theatre through grade school. After discovering circus towards the end of high school, Alexandra began doing acro yoga, and continued through college. She graduated with a degree in Food Science and Technology and moved to Ithaca, New York for work. There she began taking circus classes in earnest at Circus Culture, and shortly after started pursuing circus professionally in Philadelphia as a member of the inaugural class of Circadium School of Contemporary Circus. She graduated in May 2020, with a focus on cyr wheel and corde lisse (rope).

Parks on Tap is a traveling beer garden that gives back to the community. This year, Trail's End joins Water Works as two summer-long locations. All Parks on Tap sites are self-contained and feature roped boundaries, power, bathrooms, food and drink trucks, seating, shade and more - all without use or dependency of existing park facilities. Gay-owned, female-owned, Black-owned and Veteran-owned boutique and gift store Trunc will kick-things off with live music outside the shop featuring Justus Riveria, Justusviolin, playing music inspired by disco and Studio 54. Trunc also invites families, dog dads, dog moms and everyone to bring their furry friends for a free digital image by Justin Timins. Hudson Table will feature Artist at Work Vincent Marc, more publicly known as Marc, a Black queer creative director, stylist and photographer. There’s a new Miss Philadelphia in town! Elaine Ficarra is Miss Philadelphia 2021.
The Miss Philadelphia and Miss Philadelphia’s Outstanding Teen competition took place on May 1st at the CEG Performing Arts Academy on North Broad Street in Philadelphia. Kristen was one of the judges this year! Each winner receives a cash scholarship, and a full tuition scholarship to attend Cabrini University. They will also represent Philadelphia at the Miss Pennsylvania state competition in June.
Hear as Kristen speaks with Elaine Ficarra, your newly crowned Miss Philadelphia 2021. Elaine is from Glenmoore, PA and attends Drexel University as an Honors Biology Student. She enjoys singing and Taekwondo. She is also passionate about her platform, which she hopes will spread awareness about adolescent depression and suicide prevention.
Elaine’s crowning marked the 100th Anniversary of the Miss Philadelphia Competition, and she is ready to hit the ground running. Be sure to say hello to Elaine if you see her out and about in Philly! You’re likely to run into her at one of the over 100 appearances she’ll make during her reign.

The Colonial Theatre has been a staple in Pheonixville since 1903. This iconic theatre hosts independent films and a number of special programing events throughout the year, and is run by the Association for the Colonial Theater (ACT), a non profit 501c3 organization. Blobfest is their biggest event and fundraiser of the year. The 1958 Steve McQueen film ‘The Blob’ was filmed locally, and the theater scene in the movie (where The Blob comes out of the projector screen to attack the audience) was filmed at the Colonial Theatre.
Kristen speaks with Chuck Francisco, a longtime Blobfest committee member, film curator and host at the Colonial Theatre to talk about this year’s 22nd Annual Blobfest celebration. The festival will take place July 9-11, 2021. Because of Covid restrictions, there are no public festivals in the borough of Phoenixville until October 1st, so Blobfest will again be celebrated virtually.

Theatre is BACK! Theatre Philadelphia’s Executive Director LaNeshe Miller-White talks about the 4th Annual Philly Theatre Week, happening April 22nd to May 2nd. There are 64 different organizations involved, with 75 events and hundreds of performances all over the area. Originating companies hail from every corner of Philadelphia, from Center City to the suburbs, from Chester County to Wilmington, and from South Jersey to the Main Line.
Events will include a variety of live and pre-recorded virtual performances, panels, workshops, theatre-by-mail, audio plays and in-person outdoor events. Jewish Relief Agency mobilizes volunteers to pack and deliver monthly food assistance to over 6,400 diverse low-income individuals across Greater Philadelphia who are coping with food insecurity. During JRA's Monthly Food Distribution Program, volunteers pack and hand-deliver free, nutritious food and hygiene supplies to individuals in need.

Buffalo Bill’s House (the house used when filming the movie Silence of the Lambs) was recently purchased. The new owner has plans to rent the property out to guests. The Queen Anne Victorian style home is located in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. It’s a suburb of Pittsburgh, and only a day trip from Philadelphia. The house is 121 years old, sleeps 10 people, sits on almost 2 acres and features an in-ground pool, grill, secluded pond and lots more.

The new season of the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship features a local contestant! The National Dog Show happens in our area every year, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. It’s taped ahead of time, then airs on Thanksgiving day from noon to 2pm on NBC-10. This year, because of the COVID 19 pandemic, the show itself was closed to the public. We weren’t able to attend (and pet all of the dogs) this year, but we can still watch the show on TV! Bob Trate, Director of Marketing for the Colonial Theater gives the details on the launch of the theatre’s first GoFundMe campaign. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters and entertainment venues all over the world. The historic Colonial Theatre in downtown Pheonixville was no exception to these shutdowns, but reopened in early July, and has been able to stay open with donations and limited ticket sales.
A GoFundMe campaign for the theatre has been set up, offering some incredible donation incentives. There’s a new movie in theaters, called War With Grandpa. The film is based on the best-selling book by Robert Kimmel Smith, and stars Robert DeNiro as the Grandpa in the title, and a local kid (now teen) from Allentown named Oakes Fegley (The Goldfinch), who plays a 6th grader named Peter. Basically Peter’s grandfather moves into his house (specifically his room), and Peter is not happy about it. Thus, War With Grandpa. It looks super fun, with pranks and laughs. Based on the trailer alone, it seems like a mix of ‘Meet the Fockers’ and “Home Alone’.
Oakes filmed this movie a few years ago, when he was 12-13 years old. Kristen talks with Oakes about his working with so many big stars in both The Goldfinch (Sarah Paulson, Nicole Kidman) and now this film (Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, Uma Thurman, Jane Seymour). Philadelphia’s Jurassic Quest Drive Thru has arrived! Jurassic Quest Fossil Expert, Marty Hoffman gives Kristen all of the details on the show, now at the Wells Fargo Center. Guests will witness over 70 of their favorite dinosaurs move, roar and roam. They’ll also have the chance to interact with baby dinosaurs and adolescent dinosaurs, including the T. Rex, Spinosaurus, Triceratops, and many others. Oh, and while technically not a dinosaur (as Marty explains), there’s also a 50 foot-long Megalodon!

Evan Ehlers, Founder and Executive Director of Sharing Excess returns to Ben Around Philly to talk about the organization’s efforts to bring food to those who need it. This student run organization partners with restaurants, grocery stores and other organizations to save excess food from being thrown away. The food is saved from becoming waste, and then transported to where it's needed most.
They do this by hosting ‘Food Fests” to hand out food on the street. They also help by transporting food to other local organizations like Philabundance and Sunday Love Project. These organizations then help distribute the food to the public.
Sharing Excess has recently partnered with Lavazza Professional who plans to gift luxury coffee brewers to businesses in the Philadelphia area. Melissa Levy, Executive Director of PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) returns to BEN Around Philly to talk about the past few months at PAWS, working through the pandemic to continue their mission to rescue animals, provide affordable veterinary care, and one day make Philadelphia a no kill city. We got our own BEN-FM dog jockey Gloria through PAWS. Their annual Chef’s Night has been made virtual this year, and extended to Chef’s WEEK this time around. Eastern State Penitentiary reopens Friday (8/14)! Sean Kelley, Senior Vice President at Eastern State Penitentiary returns to BEN Around Philly with an update.
Hear all about the new safety measures in place at Eastern State Penitentiary, as well as some of the new programs they are offering (including a silent film of the prison from 1929). Sean also touches on Eastern State’s Hidden Lives Illuminated (short films created by incarcerated artists), and the cancellation of Terror Behind the Walls this year. He assures us that visiting the prison at night is sure to be plenty creepy, all by itself.

Bring the whole family (including pets) for their socially distanced drive-in showing of The Sandlot on Main Line Animal Rescue’s property at 1149 Pike Springs Rd in Chester Springs, PA. The headline read, “She enjoys working too much to stop,” by Marc Narducci. Connie is turning 85 years old next week, but has no interest in retiring. She works 5 days a week at the Rite Aid on Garrett Road in Upper Darby. Kristen gives Connie a call, and the two chat about Neil Diamond, pets, the Phillies, and not retiring, because “it’s just waiting to get old”. Kristen Herrmann speaks with Exeter Township Police Sergeant Sean Fullerton about a pretty unusual occurrence (even for 422). Around 10pm this past Monday night, a small airplane made was forced to make an emergency landing on the highway in Exeter Township, Berks County (Kristen’s home town). The engine failed on the Cessna plane, and the 22 year old pilot had to think quickly, and land the plane in the closest, safest, spot he could find. That place happened to be 422 in Exeter Township. Hear all of the details about this exciting story from Sergeant Fullerton, whose team was dispatched to the scene, where miraculously no one was injured and the landing caused only minor damage to one vehicle.
Geoff Gordon, Regional President of Live Nation joins Kristen on BEN Around Philly to talk about the return of live concerts to Philadelphia! The Colonial Theatre has been a staple in Pheonixville since 1903. Kristen speaks with Chuck Francisco, a longtime Blobfest committee member, film curator and host at the Colonial Theatre about next weekend’s 21st Annual Blobfest celebration.
Blobfest 2020: The Home Edition is happening Friday, July 10th, and Saturday, July 11th, virtually this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The 1958 Steve McQueen film ‘The Blob’ was filmed locally, and the theater scene in the movie (where The Blob comes out of the projector screen to attack the audience) was actually filmed at the Colonial Theatre. This classic theater also hosts independent films and a number of other special programming events throughout the year, and is run by a the Association for the Colonial Theater (ACT) a non profit 501c3 organization. Blobfest is the theater's biggest event and fundraiser of the year. A recent tweet by Pat Egan (from our sister station 97.5 The Fanatic) made the rounds on the internet this week, and caught the attention of the folks at Fox 29. The tweet showed photos of a little boy named Connor, who loves trash trucks.
Kristen speaks with Connor's dad, Dan Johnson, about the elaborate cardboard trash truck that he and his wife built for Connor's 2nd birthday. Connor sits in the truck each week to greet the sanitation workers, and the photos are adorable. With new COVID 19 safety measures in place, all visitors 2 years and older must wear a mask, and are encouraged to “bring their own Slide sack” (pillow case or small blanket) to slide down the famed Giant Wooden Slide. Smith employees will be taking temperatures of visitors upon arrival, with increased cleaning of facilities, and a limited 100-person Playground capacity.
Gillian Kocher, Director of Public Relations for the Pennsylvania SPCA checks in with Kristen about a recent rescue of over 100 cats, and an adoption event THIS weekend to help clear the shelters so that these babes can be cared for, and eventually find their furr-ever homes too. It’s kitten season…. during a pandemic. The shelter is already very full, and yet the PSPCA also just rescued over 100 cats from a hoarding situation. There are so many great cats waiting to go home with you, and this weekend is a great opportunity to come meet your new housemate in PURR-son at Philadelphia Brewing Company.
The PSPCA has partnered with North Shore Animal League of America who has generously lent their mobile adoption unit for the event. The show is called Back to the Basement and it’s a benefit show to help raise money for Direct Relief’s COVID-19 relief program. Kristen speaks with Dottie Levine, a local musician and music teacher who decided to begin a door to door serenade service to bring joy to others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dottie had been teaching music lessons, but during the Coronavirus pandemic, students stopped showing up for even the lessons they’d previously paid for. Zoom lessons eventually offered them another option, but in the meantime, Dottie decided to start a serenade business as a source of income and a way of brightening the lives of others during this time. Around the same time that John Krazinsky was launching his Some Good News show that’s become so popular; right here in our area, Kaitlyn (15) and Molly (now 11) Harrington decided to brighten up the lives of their friends and family by launching their own show - Good News Now - from the basement of their house. Featuring informative, fun, and positive news stories from all over, the two ‘anchors’ have gained thousands of viewers for their DIY news network, and their audience continues to grow with each new episode.

May is National Lupus Awareness Month, and Cindy Messerle, CEO of the Lupus Foundation for the Tri State Area and Cheri Perron, one of the foundation’s board members join Kristen for a conversation to raise awareness about Lupus and show support to those living with Lupus.
Lupus is a serious, life-threatening disease that can affect the body’s major organs. Twenty-five percent of all cases occur in the first two decades of life. Ninety percent of all affected are women, and women of color are affected 3-4 times more often. During COVID-19, Walnut Club members have been sharing tips to succeed in the workplace, encouraging and supporting one another, participating in more fundraisers/donations for women’s organizations in the area, and hosting events virtually for its members.
