Unlike other academic podcasts, this podcast is accessible and practical.
Elmer's life path has taken him from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan as a U. S. Marine to church ministry as an Anglican clergy. He considers God to have played a pivotal role in his life-from combat to dealing with PTSD to marriage and parenting. In this podcast listeners will hear conversations about theology and religion as it relates to life experiences.
Worship of the Christian God is often confused with one or two acts done corporately on a Sunday morning during a worship service. Those things are worship, of course, but a myopic perspective of worship can lead a person to twist the Christian religion into a self-serving enterprise. Consider with me what Scripture says on the matter, and how Anglican liturgy helps to keep us from thinking only of ourselves.
Father Jon Beadle is an Anglican priest at HopePointe Anglican Church in The Woodlands, TX. In this episode he talks about the vast reach of the Gospel in Creation and in our lives. The problem with our popular Americanized Gospel, as he identifies it, is that it doesn't go far enough. The Gospel has far reaching implications for us personally, but also all of Creation. Fr. Jon gives us an inside look at his conversion, and how that impacted his life forever.

JD and I served together during Operation Iraqi Freedom. We were both in leadership in the same platoon with 2nd Battalion 5th Marines, Golf Company. Our deployment was spent conducting counter-insurgency operations in the hell-hole known as Ramadi. At the time we were good friends and co-workers, but it wasn’t until many years later that we re-connected and started two businesses together. JD now lives in Michigan with his wife, Jess, and children Weston and Sawyer. He is owner of Mission Ready Media. JD loves the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and storytelling through various forms of media.

This is Episode #10, Start with Compassion for Yourself: Faith, Addiction, and Recovery. I am Elmer Miguel your host and today I’m joined by my younger brother, Oliver, as we have a conversation about his journey out of addiction.
Oliver and I were raised in a devout Christian home, in a tiny speck of a town called Andrews, Texas. We faithfully attended our hispanic Assemblies of God church twice a week, at least. From the time we were able, we played an instrument in the church band. But suddenly, we were plucked from our comfortable growing grounds and re-planted in strange soil. Our parents moved the family to Greeley, Colorado, where the Miguel boys trudged into cavernous waters. Each boy responded in their own way.
When I left for the Marines in 2001, Oliver was in junior high school and he gave me no reason to worry. By his senior year, he was drinking regularly. I heard much of his story through mom and dad. But now, he and I sit down to discuss the lessons he learned through those dark years.

This is Episode #9, Life in service to Afghanistan and the US, a conversation with Rawouf Alizada, former interpreter for the US military. with me, Elmer Miguel your host and I’m joined today by Ali. He was my interpreter during a deployment to the Helmand Province of AFG in the spring and summer of 2010. He is from Kabul, and his first gig as an interpreter was with me. I remember looking into his eyes and seeing perhaps a bit of nerves, and a lot of questions. I was not certain that he would be a good fit with our unit, but over time he grew bold, strong, reliable, and trustworthy. Toward the end of our deployment his then fiancee made my daughter a beautiful dress. I was proud to take that home to my little girl. But I took home much more than that; I left Afghanistan with a love for their people and an admiration for those in my circle, including Ali. I consider him a friend, above all, and a comrade in arms.
What you will hear today is an impromptu conversation that I had with Ali a few days ago, in light of the recent events in his home country of Afghanistan.

In America's longest war we have made mistakes along the way, but nothing rivals the way we have chosen to end this war. Although war is undesirable, to say the least, it is irresponsible to drop everything and walk away. It is even more detestable to claim no responsibility for the devastation and the lack of security. As the finger pointing increases among the international community, the Taliban now controls the nation's capital, Kabul. To my friends and those who co-labored with me who now watch in horror I say, be not discouraged for the work you have done is not in vain. For those in the path of death and destruction, I send my condolences. Let us all pray for Afghanistan.

Attending church is a sacramental experience, one which has been passed down from the beginning of the church in the New Testament. One could argue that the idea of communion with God and with one another goes back further to the very purpose of the creation of humans. So I have to ask, "Is livestream church really church?"

A polymath of sorts, Blaise was considered a child prodigy who mastered the principles of Euclid by the age of twelve. He grew up rubbing elbows with the French elites, but was converted to Christianity during the famous "Night of Fire." Pascal's memorial to that night has become synonymous with his name and stands to this day as one of his greatest works.

Holy Week is a sacred time in the Christian church, in which we remember and celebrate, in various ways, the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The significance of this week is often understated, at least in the mainstream, but it is of great importance. I grew up celebrating the week in a minimal way. I was more of a Sunday morning, resurrection day type of Christian. But I missed out on the penitential side of things because I lacked the observation of Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
In this episode I talk about the way the week is celebrated at my local parish, and about some of the details and experiences I had during the week.
