Our Biblical Theology series keeps rolling along, and this time, the boys take on something that gets everyone's blood pressure boiling: economics. What are the ways the current usage of the word obscures both a deeper theological meaning of the term AND the way money/lending/exchange, etc. are understood in Scripture? What are the ways that Scripture forces us to reconsider how we understand wealth in our communities and in our personal lives? This and more right here on UCG!

Starting a new series on "Biblical Theology," the boys briefly discuss what that means (over against "scriptural studies" on one hand or "theology" more generally on the other--shout out to Benedict XVI!), and then dive into their first subject: Prophecy. What are contemporary misunderstandings, how can a fuller account help us understand Scripture better, and how does the Scriptural vision of Prophecy help us make sense of things here and now (and yes, both Fatima Secrets and Algorithms make guest appearances!)

Bud is the lecturer for his local Knights of Columbus chapter, and he had a reflection on how we answer the call of God, based on the lives of saints in Scripture. We dive into the idea of what makes us weary to answer the particular callings in our life, and what temptations allow us to ignore the call or transform it in ways that go against the very act of the call itself.

In this Father's Day episode, Dr. Bud Marr hosts solo while co-host Bo Bonner travels through Europe, welcoming back an Uncommon Good "all-star": Joe Stopulos, host of the Man Up show on Iowa Catholic Radio. Both shows launched in 2016, and this episode marks an Iowa Catholic Radio mashup centered on one question — what does it mean to live a life well lived in light of eternity?

The conversation grows out of Joe's recent loss of his father, who died after a fourteen-week battle with aggressive cancer. Joe shares the beauty found within that suffering: a death surrounded by family, the reception of communion and the sacrament of anointing, and a final afternoon of praying the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at his father's bedside. The discussion turns to the Church's teaching that we should never hasten death, and how that teaching preserved precious conversations, graces, and "teachable moments" that would otherwise have been lost.

Highlights and themes include:

  • The witness of service over selfishness — drawing on Joe's father, bookstore owner Lois Brookhart, Father Aquinas, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati as everyday and saintly models
  • Bishop Robert Barron's challenge that "your life is not about you"
  • Memento mori and Ben Sasse's reflections on facing mortality
  • Living the joy of the gospel without needing to be a scholar or apologist — the "little way" of St. Thérèse and the humble witness of Blessed Solanus Casey and St. John Henry Newman
  • Balancing vocation, career, and intentional time with children
  • Health span and stewardship of the body — referencing Peter Attia's Outlive — as a way to keep serving others well into old age
  • Tim Carney's Family Unfriendly and resisting the "Instagram" sheen of family life

The Uncommon Good is a production of Iowa Catholic Radio, exploring Catholic social teaching for everyday life. Thank you to Imogene Ingredients for helping to underwrite the show — learn more at imogeneingredients.com.

Pray with us on air: the Rosary at 4:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 2:57 PM, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Rosary at 8:30 PM. You can also pray the Rosary anytime on the Iowa Catholic Radio app, available 24/7/365, and find upcoming diocesan events on our events page.

This week on The Uncommon Good, Dr. Bud Maher flies solo while Bo Bonner continues his doctoral studies in England. His guest is Dr. Stephen Lawson, a longtime friend and newly appointed associate professor of theology at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas — a position so new he hasn't appeared on the university's website yet. Check back at newman.edu this fall to follow his work.

The Stone-Campbell Movement
Dr. Lawson grew up in Grayson, Kentucky, the son of two Bible college professors deeply rooted in the Stone-Campbell (restorationist) movement — a tradition that intentionally uses generic church names like "Church of Christ" or "Christian Church" to emphasize unity over denominationalism. He explains the movement's founding principle ("where the Bible speaks, we speak; where the Bible is silent, we are silent"), its surprisingly robust understanding of baptism and weekly Eucharist, and how its Biblicist roots ironically pushed many of its most serious scholars toward deeper engagement with church history.

The Academic Journey
From Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri, to Emmanuel Christian Seminary, and finally to Saint Louis University's PhD program in historical theology, Dr. Lawson describes how immersion in the Cappadocian Fathers, Augustine, and patristic scholarship created a hunger the Stone-Campbell tradition couldn't fully satisfy. He reflects on a remarkable cohort of fellow Stone-Campbell scholars at SLU — including mutual friends Alex Giltner, Jordan Wood, and Alden Bass — many of whom have since entered the Catholic Church.

Hauerwas, Peterson, and Newman
Two thinkers proved pivotal: ethicist Stanley Hauerwas, whose radical ecclesiology pushed Lawson to ask serious questions about what the Church actually is, and Protestant-turned-Catholic theologian Erik Peterson (1890–1960), whose conversion story Lawson wrote his dissertation on. He was asked three times during his dissertation defense: Why aren't you Catholic?

Landing the Airplane
The decisive moment came when an institutional merger at Austin Graduate School of Theology — where Lawson was teaching — produced an administrator's claim that a theology degree was "basically the same thing" as a degree in marriage and family therapy. That reduction of Christianity to a subjective self-help tool made staying in a subjectivist tradition impossible. He and his wife Emily entered RCIA at St. Ignatius Martyr Church in Austin, Texas, and entered full communion with the Catholic Church. Their baptisms were recognized as valid; no rebaptism was needed.

Teaching Theology Today
After three years teaching at a Catholic high school in St. Louis, Dr. Lawson reflects on what really matters in the classroom. His approach shifted away from memorizing theological vocabulary toward helping students encounter Christ through texts — most notably, using Augustine's Confessions as a mirror for students to map their own spiritual geographies and key life moments.

Pope Leo's Encyclical
Dr. Lawson offers an early take on Magnificat Humanitas, Pope Leo's new encyclical on human dignity and artificial intelligence, describing it as a text with real, lasting impact — one that calls the Church back to the concrete, local, embodied person in an age of commodification and algorithmic control. He sees limited room for AI in theological education, where the goal is encounter, not output.

Dr. Lawson's conversion essay is available through his Facebook page. Look for his published work in the Newman Studies Journal. Dr. Bud Maher teases a return visit to go deeper on the encyclical.

In this episode, Dr. Bud Marr sits down with Matthew David Wiseman — independent scholar, tutor, and author — for a wide-ranging conversation about one of the most theologically rich conversion stories you'll hear. Bo Bonner is traveling in Europe for the month of June, so Bud is flying solo and bringing some exceptional guests to the show.

Highlights include:

  • Matthew's upbringing as a Southern Baptist in West Texas and his family's gradual move toward home church worship
  • His introduction to the Hebrew Roots Movement — a Gentile Christian movement emphasizing Torah observance, kosher laws, and Saturday Sabbath
  • How disagreements over the interpretation of the Law (especially calculating feast days and the liturgical calendar) exposed the need for a living oral tradition
  • His discovery that the Law of Moses is not self-interpreting — and how that realization cracked open the question of ecclesiastical authority
  • His transition into Anglicanism, drawn by apostolic succession, and his eye-opening first encounter with Eucharistic liturgy — which he recognized as a fulfillment of temple worship and the Passover Seder
  • The fragmentation of the Anglican Communion and how watching it fall apart confirmed for him that authority without a final arbiter cannot maintain unity
  • His reception into the Catholic Church in 2016 in St. Andrews, Scotland — and why that moment felt like completion, not just conversion
  • The influence of James Kugel's How to Read the Bible, Peter Kreeft, and C.S. Lewis on his intellectual journey
  • Reflections on the Jewish roots of the Mass and the continuity between ancient Israel's worship and Catholic liturgy

Matthew's book, The Two Jerusalems: My Conversion from the Messianic Movement to the Catholic Church, is available now. Contact Divine Treasures to check local availability.

His interview on EWTN's The Coming Home Network is also available online and is highly recommended.

On this week’s episode of The UnCommon Good, Dr. Bud Marr welcomes returning guest Dr. Matthew Umbarger from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas.

Dr. Umbarger shares his remarkable journey from the Restoration Movement and missionary work in Israel into the Catholic Church. Along the way, Bud and Matthew discuss biblical interpretation, the historical roots of Christian worship, the importance of reading Scripture in community, and how Catholic theology transformed their understanding of the Old Testament.

The heart of the conversation centers on Dr. Umbarger’s book:
“A Table in the Presence of My Enemies: Banqueting and Battling in Ancient Israel.”

Listeners will hear a fascinating exploration of Psalm 23, the Eucharist as preparation for spiritual battle, the Passover connection to Christian worship, and how ancient Israel understood sacrificial meals before battle.

The episode also touches on:

  • Catholic biblical literacy today
  • The Church Fathers and Scripture
  • Historical criticism and faith
  • Spiritual warfare and the Mass
  • The continuity between the Old and New Testaments
  • Why the Eucharist matters for daily Christian life

We wrap up the first group of episodes in our Reconsidered Leader series--bringing the theoretical to a close and opening up with Scripture for grouping #2.

Here, we look into the modern philosophical assumptions regarding leadership, whose flagship ideas belong to Hobbes and Nietzsche. Opposed to both is the Christian understanding of peace and prayer, and this consideration of "warring factions" brings our theoretical section to a fitting end.

With a summer sabbatical on order, we will be on break from the Reconsidered Leader, but will pick back up with part 2 in July!

With this episode, we point out how "followership," that is obedience and discipleship, not only make leadership possible in the first place, but are also a base reality for all leaders--because even they have to follow someone! We look at the way Jesus Christ is both the perfect example of a leader AND the perfect form of obedience, and why such understandings chaff at the world's understanding of things so profoundly!

We continue with the leader reconsidered, this time looking into the particular way a leader imitates Christ and His being-set-apart-for-others. What is the most fundamental way the Holiness of Jesus is shown forth? What else but that, in His resurrection, He retains the wounds of His passion! How is it that leaders must imitate Christ precisely in this way? Find out more by listening to the episode!

We continue along not only with the reconsidered leader, but alighting upon the concept of holiness once more. This time, we utilize the theory of French Thinker Rene Girard and his theory regarding violence in religion and the scapegoat to make sense of two things. 1) How does Jesus Christ understand Himself to be "set apart," that is, Holy, in contradistinction to the rival political groups in first century Palestine? 2) How must leaders who would lead like Jesus both understand why scapegoating happens, and how it is that the Holiness Christ calls us to unravels the power of the scapegoat?

A pivotal episode--don't miss it!

We keep our reconsidered leader arc going, this time considering the Scriptural concept of Holiness and what it has to teach us about leadership that imitates Our Lord. Dispelling misconceptions regarding the ideas of holiness, we look to the Old Testament to dwell on the concept of election (both for persons and people), and dive into the social and political situation on the ground during the New Testament to help look at Jesus's understanding of the point of holiness, and the implications this has for leadership.

Rolling along with the reconsidered leader, we explore how the Theology of Sacrifice makes Taleb's concept of "Skin In The Game"...well...take on flesh! Sacrifice is often misunderstood as archaic or merely destructive, but with a properly informed Theological understanding, the Christian difference in leadership takes on new light. We continue our Reconsidered Leadership series with part 5: Extending arguments made by Nassim Nicholas Taleb from his popular book Antifragile, we explore the concept of "Skin in the Game," and how interpreted through the "key of Christ," this understanding of what leaders must do in regard to risk, benefit, and sharing burdens with those they lead serves as the practical way forward to judge whether one is a kenotic leader or not.

We continue our Reconsidered Leadership series with part 4: Antifragility. Taking the theory by Nassim Nicholas Taleb from the book by the same name, we consider how leadership that is made different in the "key of Christ," is self-emptying and "apophatic" leads us to help our followers not become fragile, but more than resilient. This is nothing but antifragility, and it is unique to the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ that His strength is more than robust, but weakness, suffering, and strife transfigured by the Resurrection.

The arc of the Reconsidered Leader rolls on: we now turn to the central Scriptural concept that must guide our understanding of leadership: Kenosis. With extended observations from Philippians 2 and the Gospel episode of Christ washing the Apostle's feet, we formulate the essential principle grounding the rest of our conception of the difference Jesus Christ makes for leadership studies.

On this special episode of The Uncommon Good, Dr. Bud Marr is joined by Joe Stopulos, host of Man Up, for a candid and engaging discussion about the spiritual journey of a cradle Catholic. Joe reflects on growing up in a large Catholic family, the quiet power of faithful parents, and how simply “showing up” to Mass formed a lasting foundation of belief.

The conversation explores the importance of fathers in passing on the faith, the challenges and blessings of Catholic life in the 1990s, and how Joe’s faith deepened in adulthood through parish life, Scripture study, Catholic radio, and the influence of Fr. John Ricardo. Joe also shares the story behind the founding of Man Up and the vibrancy he sees today in the Diocese of Des Moines.

This episode is a thoughtful reflection on how ordinary faithfulness can bear extraordinary fruit — in families, parishes, and the wider Church.

In today's episode, we interview Hayden Haggerman, co-author and editor of the new book Converting the Blue Devils: Becoming Catholic at Duke. As many of you know, both Bo and Bud became Catholic while at Duke Divinity school, so to see a generation a decade younger than us have enough converts to get a book together intrigued us, and the conversation did not disappoint. Check out how it is that for a run of years, a Protestant Seminary that emphasized Ethics, the Church Fathers, and the Sacraments served as the fertile soil for multiple Catholic Converts!

This is what the guys cover in the episode, and its exciting to see what direction the conversation goes!

Not only are we being dorks by referring to Antichrist via a Brady Bunch meme, but we have made a "tribute" episode...to one of the best unusable shows we recorded! Due to severe audio issues that rendered half of the show hard to hear, we were not able to post a show about the now infamous interview between Tech Billionaire Peter Theil and conservative media commentator Ross Douthat. But God in his good Providence had good things in mind: with a few weeks of even more commentary and happenings in regards to that interview and Peter Theil, and even more so Bud and Bo's fruitful thinkings on tech and theosis due to their retreat last week, we pick up what is salvageable idea-wise from the now lost episode, and create something--even better!

And as you can surmise, this has everything to do with different conceptions of the antichrist, and rival conceptions on salvation from said figure. Don't miss it!

We interview Fr. Uwe Michael Lang about his new book, A Short History of the Roman Mass. Father Uwe Michael Lang is a priest of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in London and a lecturer in theology at Allen Hall Seminary and St. Mary's University, Twickenham. He is the author of The Voice of the Church at Prayer, Turning Towards the Lord: Orientation in Liturgical Prayer, and Signs of the Holy One: Liturgy, Ritual, and Expression of the Sacred. This book is a short introduction to the development of the Roman Rite of Mass, the most widely used of the Church’s liturgical rites, from its origins in early Christianity until the present day. Over the centuries, the form of Mass most Catholics are familiar with has been shaped by the Apostolic See of Rome in contact and exchange with other local churches. Understanding this rich and complex history will help not only the clergy in their sacramental ministry, but all the faithful in participating consciously and fruitfully in the liturgy of the Church. In the wake of the liturgical reforms initiated by Pope Pius XII in the mid-20th century, fully embraced by the Second Vatican Council, and implemented in the postconciliar period, there has been an intense and often controversial debate on continuity and rupture in liturgical development. Amid this debate, the long and complex history of the Roman liturgy is not always sufficiently acknowledged. The refinement of the Roman Mass, as this book shows, has been marked both by continuity and by change. From its formative period in late antiquity, the ritual shape of the Roman Mass was affected by religious, social, cultural, political, and economic transformations. But changes are to be expected over such a long period of time and the wide geographical area where this rite has been used. It is the essential continuity that stands out. This work challenges the conventional narrative that the liturgy of the Western church moved from early dynamic development through medieval decline to early modern stagnation and was only revived in the wake of the Second Vatican Council – a narrative that still has considerable traction both in academic publications and among the wider public. Today we pick back up considerations of Catholic Social Teaching, but with a liturgically appropriate twist: in this month of November dedicated to praying for the dead, what can the dead teach us about civic life and Catholic Social Teaching? Ruminating on a wide array of commentators, we explore how the ultimate poverty of death should make us treat the living better and understand how Christ's Death and Resurrection shows His preferential option for us even in the grave. We keep trucking along with our series reconsidering the fundamental pillars and principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the same first run of shows we started with when we began the UnCommon Good on Iowa Catholic Radio 8 years ago. Today we deal with the Dignity of Persons, and how that plays into things like the Imago Dei, Human Rights, and how the primacy of the human person alters how we consider any other social question. We keep rolling along with our Reconsideration of the first series of shows we started with 8 years ago when the UnCommon Good began! Keepin' on keepin' on with our 8 year anniversary rewind, review, and renewal episodes about foundational Catholic Social Teaching Principles, we consider the twin giants of Solidarity and Subsidiarity on this episode. 8 years ago we focused on what we saw as shallow interpretations of these ideas, but this time we really focus in on how they are too often seen as opposites or at least something to hold in tension, rather than intimately related, and indeed best seen as subsidiarity being the "Catholic way to do Solidarity." The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, but the fact that it is a body means a lot. On one hand, no principle of Catholic Social Teaching stands except that it rest of the foundation of the "brute reality" of the Church. On the other, the members of the Faith become worldly, even in their best intentions, unless they rest their efforts on the fact of the Church as the portal between time and eternity. This and more on the new episode! Iowa Catholic Radio Network Shows:- Be Not Afraid with Fr. The Feast of the Assumption always denotes the ending of summer and the fact that fall will start soon, but it also is a pivot point for many Protestants considering conversion to Catholicism. Bo and Bud talk about the factors that made the Assumption of Mary not only "make sense" from an Apologetics stand point, but grounded Catholicism both in the here and now, the hope of Eternal life, and in the power of the Logos to imbue with more-than-symbolic power what was formerly just the vanishing shadows of time.

What does it means to do history rather than just read history? Bo comes up with a t-shirt pithy aphorism, Bud double and triple checks whether it makes any sense, and we are off to the races talking about history, eye witness accounts, means of communication in terms of how we understand past events, and yes...John Henry Newman on the illative sense. Who knew history could be such a blast?

Undoubtedly you have heard of the French fiasco in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. How are Christians to process this event? We try to get underneath the surface level political tensions and ask about the nature of art and imagery, interpretation, etc., and ask ourselves whether Christians should be offended by mockery, or if they should demand better mockery from their cultured despisers.

Reflecting on Leadership in a Christian Key once again, we take on the injection of St. Paul to boast in our weakness, by which the strength of the Lord is shown. Continuing the theme from Part 1, we talk about how the goal of Lent leading into the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday and then the glory of Easter is a long practice of learning to engage in rest as perfect activity. We dive into the full implications of the Sabbath, how at the end of our lives we enter into a Sabbath rest in our final passion in order to prepare for the rest of Eternity and witness that to others, and dwell on how Holy Ones (like Bo's Great Aunt Jo) exhibit this reality for us in their deaths. Happy Eastertide to everyone!

As we barrel through Lent--ever closer to Easter--there were two things that happened this past week to the fellas that made them reflect on the fact that in God, rest is perfect activity. However, Dr. Zwier challenges this narrative on both accounts, arguing that what unites Faith and Science is actually their mutual reliance on "apophatic" (or "negative") knowledge, or knowing something better by ruling out what it is not. In other words, both fields share in common this: the deeper you go into either, the more you come to appreciate the mystery of both.
