Hear the inspiring journeys of four physiotherapists who successfully transitioned into new careers. Each interview delves into their motivations, that moment when they decided to make the move, things they miss and things they don't.
In their own way, each of my guests has explored the art of career reinvention and the power of following your passion.
Jennifer James is trailblazing the way in obesity management and understanding. This was originally a Chewing It Over episode that Jim couldn't bring himself to edit down as the full hour is absolutely fantastic conversation.

Quality Improvement doesn't need to be anxiety inducing (those notes audits!)
Jo Kitchen, network co-ordinator for Allied Health Professionals Quality Improvement (AHPQI) explains that it simply means finding ways to make things better. When asked "What matters to you?" many therapists responded that knowing they were delivering a quality service, improved their sense of fulfilment and well-being.Jo describes how she has learned to include everyone (service users and those delivering services) in discussions around 'how we got here, what the problems and potential solutions might be' - rather than feeling she has to go it alone and fix everything herself.
A podcast special and tell everyone but we are getting the bug back for longform with much much more to come!
Joanne Elphinston is not unique in exploring movement but her approach to "beautiful" movement certainly steps further than most. Is this good/bad, necessary/over the top? No stone is left unturned...

In my ignorance, when Felicity suggested this topic I thought 'that'll be interesting, but I wonder how much being diabetic affects identity.'As a result of this conversation, I am humbled and now fully educated as to the extent of monitoring, tweaking and managing this condition requires, and also the effect on Felicity's view of herself as a professional. At one point, in the interests of being human and illustrating that it's okay to have needs as a clinician, Felicity goes off to inject herself with insulin, and I have a wee!

Injections for Osteoarthritic Knees is a big, evolving, controversial topic. On the one hand, emerging evidence suggests the cheap, easily available steroids are damaging to joints, on the other questions remain over effectiveness of more expensive injectables like Hyaluronic Acid and PRP.Combine that with Physiotherapists having lost the rights to inject PRP and the landscape is turbulent to say the least.Bilal Barkatali discusses all of this with Jack in what will absolutely be seen as a very well nuanced and balanced conversation that assesses the current state of play and provides real information on who to consider for which injectables.Thank you to EOS Active for sponsoring this episode. Find out more about them HERE: https://eosactive.co.uk/
Hyaluronic Acid is commonly lumped in with other injectables like PRP, Steroids, stem cells and so on. In some ways of course it is similar, the indications and method of delivery are not miles apart.Should we be thinking about it differently for Osteoarthritic Knees however? Jim Carr of Eos Active is here to Chew It Over with Jack and open up this conversation to make sure we are not dismissing potentially beneficial treatments for Knee OA which is difficult to manage!A huge thank you to Eos Active for sponsoring this episode, find out more about them HERE: https://eosactive.co.uk/Stay tuned at the end for a sneak preview of Physio Matters Session 104 where Jack talks in detail about injectables with Bilal Barkatali!
Jim was just a little excited to indulge in one of his favourite topics for a full podcast - Osteoarthritis. Ossur produce a wide range of limb products, of particular interest are their medial offloader braces for knee osteoarthritis. A lot of ground covered as he discusses with Giles the construction of the braces, how they work and who they might work for, improving compliance/tolerance and the cost implications. You can find out more about Ossur hereYou can also contact them for more information by email ukinfo@ossur.com or phone 03450 065 065Don't forget to like and subscribe to the podcast, if you have 10 seconds why not leave a review!

Of course we're perfectionists. We learn what is 'correct' and then we try to function in the world of messy, unpredictable humans who throw curve balls every half hour!
Perfectionism isn't just about having high standards. It's when you pin your self-worth to the attainment of those standards.
When we decide something within us is unnacceptable, it becomes abhorent in others and we exercise judgement.
Until we are prepared to look at the external environment of capitalism, consumerism, social media comparison, perfectionism will continue to thrive within us and between us
Claire Sullivan is here on Chewing It Over with Jack discussing the ongoing Strike action by CSP members over NHS pay.
Some would say it is never justified to strike and compromise patient care, others would counter with patient care is already compromised through stretching staff far too thin.
What do you think? Let us know and have your say!

As part of a doctorate in Physiotherapy at Glasgow Caledonian University, Daniel is conducting a study looking at the incidence of burnout in UK based Physiotherapists.
Jo discuss the shocking fact that Daniel's initial studies show a high rate of burnout in Physiotherapy students, before they have even started the job. They reflect on what is perfectionsim, ask why the profession attracts perfectionists and discuss how we may be unwittingly driving each other to higher levels of perfectionism.
Jo also asks Daniel for his thoughts on the potential future value of this work for physiotherapists and healthcare.

We managed to steal a few minutes of the very busy Benoy Mathew while we had our pop up studio at Therapy Expo. Jack had a great chat with him about the overlooked side-effects of shockwave and his clinically useful book about Hips and Knees
We started a new segment when we visited Therapy Expo called "Change My Mind". In this Jack Chew posed the statement that "We Can't Meaningfully Alter Tissue With Manual Therapy". It is a contentious statement especially at a show with a lot of massage booths, tape and tissue sports guns. A really interesting conversation that will test bias on both sides of the argument.

Jo chats with eternally curious, insightful and humble Joanne Elphinston about her recent article "Changing the conversation:an embodied coaching approach in the clinical session" We discuss, - how the conventional therapist-patient power dynamic might be depleting your energy reserves - the benefits of loosening our grip on the "expert fixer" identity - the gulf between informing and educating for meaningful learning - cognitively based teaching vs a sensory experience for real patient engagement - how genuine partnership with your patient doesn't mean withholding expertise

WE ARE BACK, we said we would do some special episodes and we absolutely couldn't turn away the opportunity to interview the one and only Lorimer Moseley who is, of course, an absolute legend.

Is pain a sensation or a perception?
It is all answered and a whole lot more!

Psychologically Informed Practice - you might have come across the term, but what is it? How can you start to apply it in clinic? WHY should you start to apply it in clinic? Daniel Arbilla is an Exercise Physiologist based in Sydney, Australia and visits the podcast to discuss all this and more with Anna Maria and Matt.
From the similarities and differences between Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), to asking the question, "If someone is riding a horse and they think that it's a unicorn, are they still riding a horse?" this podcast explores how psychology is ever present in the clinical encounter and how our words and our behaviours can greatly impact the outcomes of a session.

I remember when I was working in the NHS a Physio named Rachel Chester came and presented the findings of her PhD to our department as we had helped with data collection. The findings blew my mind. That was a number of years ago and still that research blows my mind.

The Flippin’ Pain Initiative is a public health campaign run by Connect Health and is a project that aims to bring contemporary pain understanding to the Lincolnshire community. In February, they launched the Flippin’ Pain brand and set out to flip the understanding of a room full of people with persistent pain with the help of pain Professors Lorimer Moseley and Cormac Ryan and set up by Connect's Head of NHS Service Development Richard Pell.
We were lucky enough to be able to send Felicity Thow with a camera and a mic to hold these three legends up for an hour on the day and even luckier that they agreed – we can’t thank Connect, Richard, Lorimer and Cormac enough for their time. Here’s what we ended up with: a podcast about bringing pain education to the masses and our role in public health within our communities.
