The Top 10 Benefits of Regenerative Soil Microscopy1. You can see & evaluate Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) on roots, in inoculants, and the lifecycle & inoculation rate.2. It seems like everyone is working really hard yet it's all inwardly focused on the body. There are some folks looking externally at heavy metals in the environment like Tamara Rubin of Lead Safe Mama or the contamination coming from pesticides and plastics in our soils, water, and food, but very few people are focused on how to fix it, how to do things regeneratively, and what's best for our bodies and personal health.We've been so focused on pointing out what's wrong, we've missed what steps we need to take to move forward. The reductionist and deconstructionist methods of reasoning and science are failing us because they don't lead to clear action steps. This is why holistic and regenerative solutions and science have shown up to fill the gap. Why Does Grounding Work?If our homes and shoes weren't designed to energetically separate us from the earth's negative charge, grounding wouldn't even be a thing. We likely wouldn't even know about it as a phenomenon because there'd be no lack to fill. Instead we'd be living more naturally, so we'd be healthier and we'd take grounding itself for granted... There's a LOT we take for granted that work tirelessly for our health and protection every day all day from the microbes to the plants to the natural cycles, they are all supporting us. If we take the time, we can begin to observe these processes and partner with them, and it all starts with the soil. It's the most powerful point of leverage we have to make change, to instill resilience, and to generate abundant, nutrient dense foods. BUT IT'S MORE THAN THAT...There's a feedback loop between our genetic expression and the soil that previously has never been exposed but is fundamental to all our health... and sickness. When our soils are weak, plants are weak and the animals that feed on them are weakened as well, leaving all open to sickness, disease, and predation. We can spend all the money in the world on supplements and gadgets, but if we don't have clean, nutrient-dense food, regenerative soils, and a thriving ecosystem to live in, we're leaving ourselves open to a whole world of potential problems. If we don't have regenerative soil, we miss out on strengthening the foundation of our health: our food and immediate environments. Are You Ready to BIOHACK Your Environment from the Ground UP?

It's early morning here when I recorded this but I had to put my thoughts into words and share them:
We had such high hopes for this technology especially for education but something changed along the way. There was a shift from connection and empowerment to divide and conquer, from expression to influence, from choice to dictation. Somewhere along the way, we lost the original internet, and now we all exist moslty in silos, many of us arguing about the world we see through our devices as they are quite divergent from each others. When people don't share a common perception of the world, it naturally creates conflict, fear, division, and distrust.
Interestingly, this is why online courses can be so energizing and stand in contrast to this tendency: in a group you share and discuss the same experience as you would in real life, overcoming to a large degree the division. This is why so many of us have retreated from social media into private courses and communities online: they feel like the internet did 15 years ago!
Here's my early morning thoughts on what has happened and what we can do about it as individuals. Let me know what your perspective is on this - that way we can connect, co-create reality, and make the world a better, more stable, and more wonderful place to live.

Soil Biology is the KEY to All Fertility...
and I mean ALL Fertility because the soil biology is in a very real sense the microbiome of the earth and plants rely upon it as animals rely upon plants and each other for sustenance. Yes, the air, water, minerals, and sun are also key components to all systems, but it's the microbiology that makes the magic happen. By magic I mean, biochemistry, biophysics, and more science that would have been deemed blasphemy or witchcraft in a not too distant past. We now can SEE it all happen in real time with new microscopes and new techniques, some of which have only been created in the past 6 months. We know more about space than we do about our own soil - it's the ultimate frontier and offers us the greatest benefits. This is why doctors are saying kids need to play in the dirt more. This is why people are taking probiotics, eating fresh food, and drinking fermented beverages. This is why folks add compost and compost tea to their soils.
Because the microbiology controls EVERYTHING: Our Health, the Health of All Plants, the Health of Our World, and even Our State of Mind:
Mood and Mindset are directly affected by the Microbes in our Guts.
BUT it's not enough to just say these things in generalizations, I think we should delve into this together because biology within us, in plants, and in the soils are all linked and related. For my part, I can show the soil perspective in situ and how it connects to the biology in the plants and reflect it out onto the world, showing how these things relate to animals and even our own nutrition. This is the path to the regenerative future that we all are seeking: it's biological. If you are building soil right now, you are choosing a future direction for it intentionally or not. How to live a good life? to find happiness, meaning, and fulfillment? What are the steps, the pieces, the ingredients? is it like Oprah said, we need 70k a year minimum? or is it a higher goal that forms a life of purpose? How do we obtain this “good life”? It was not mentioned in schools, my family didn’t focus on it, and it’s from this place inside me that I feel this need for change, for something more, for something to radically change, for something to grow...

It seems hard to find & vet solutions online and even in person right now because there’s a panicked scraping of the bottom of the barrel currently with those hording the remains saying whatever comes to mind to stall the realization as long as possible. The fact is the governments, politicians, industries, fossil fuel industry, mining, industrial ag, big chem, et. they all have known what they are doing is destroying the planet for a long time. George Washington held American farmers in open disgust for their farming practices. Plato and Aristotle worried too. This is NOT a new story but a 10,000 year old habit that has destroyed the world, but that’s still only 5% of the story. 95% of our existence has been regenerative - homo sapiens had a compostable culture for 190,000 years. That’s who we REALLY are. The Info iS OUT THERE: Aboriginal, Indigenous Insights, Advanced Permaculture, Educational & High Performance Psychology, New Mycology, New Biology, New Neuroscience, Quantum Physics, etc. You need a New Story: HAVE YOUR PICK!!
Get Active - We need to take action NOW today this week this month NOW. We can’t wait any longer or hesitate. EVERY MOMENT OF GROWTH AND EVERY REGENERATIVE ACTION HAS EXPONENTIAL POSITIVE EFFECTS RIGHT NOW. As we have lost over 50% of ALL LIFE the past century, nurturing life is NOT happening, so every foothold nature gets is HUGE and the rebirth of what is ALREADY LOST.

How will the Advanced Permaculture Certification work?
It won’t work like a PDC. It’s not about # of hours you watch a video or listen to lecture or if you can demonstrate learning in a backyard or homestead design on paper.
All the instructors, we all want you to LIVE Permaculture inside & outside the garden.
It can’t be overnight & we can’t do it ALL alone on a homestead: it has to be a community effort.

Gardeners have more enthusiasm on average because they know why Gardening is so special.

Why do Patterns even Matter? Why is Permaculture Focused on Pattern Literacy?
What is a Pattern? Patterns are things that repeat in a predictable way.
My Story: Pattern literacy is both basic and foundational, so if you don’t recognize it readily, you can make grievous errors. For example, in my first garden I placed the rows pointed downhill which in a dry hot climate promotes run off, erosion, drying of the land and overall stress in the garden - I didn’t see the overall pattern and how to interact with it so I couldn’t setup my garden properly. As soon as I began studying Permaculture with Geoff Lawton, I quickly recognized my issue and literally tore up my entire spring garden, reset it, and replanted it. How else could I have shown images of the garden to my classmates in Geoff’s course? I had to do it the right way!
What other patterns are they? Pests are part of a Pattern - just wait a few days and see if something comes to remove them. If your soil, plants, and system are healthy, something will come to rescue your plants. Whenever a plant is stressed they are either calling for an attack on themselves or a rescue from an attack. Recognizing the signs and patterns of each is vital to managing a garden wisely.
There are MANY Patterns - some just seem like Organized Shapes, but even these have purpose.
WAVE example - Sound, Light, Vibration. off/on, night/day, winter/summer, heart beats, breathing (chest rises and falls), the rise and fall of land, the meander of streams and rivers (slows the water and increases the life capacity and cycling), waves on the ocean (starting with a hurricane spiral and ending in a spiral), waves of sound, vibration, pleasure pain are all on a spectrum of waves - all viruses and tumors have unique frequencies they resonate at - the Pulse of On Off that makes a wave defines EVERYTHING on this Planet. Day Night. Summer Winter. Male Female. Predator Prey. Good Evil. Tides. Life. Plot/Story.
Maybe getting carried away here, BUT You See the Point or the Pattern that is ;)

The 6 Keys to Winter Gardening
Are you intimidated by Winter Gardening?
I was, and it held my gardening in the spring and summer back for years. I let the weeds take over every winter thinking I couldn’t garden despite their abundance and growth, and I rationalized that I was letting the land “rest” which is an old paradigm that doesn’t work as it used to because the world has changed. The fallow periods in European fields of the middle ages allowed wild elements from bordering forest and wild pastures to reinoculate their fields and reset them. With our wild systems in stress, distant from most human populations, and in severe decline, we cannot hope for the rest periods to be ones of large regeneration in our fields and gardens. Instead we need to intentionally ramp up the regeneration by wisely choosing to take correct steps to align our systems to nature’s patterns and cycles using permaculture.
Once I started using these keys, winter gardening became possible and in many ways EASIER than spring and summer gardening because: - things moved slower it was easier to adapt and respond - there are limited options so decisions are easier - there’s nothing else growing on in winter it’s easy to be excited about your garden success!
The 6 Keys to Winter Gardening Start Earlier than you think Choose Plants Wisely: Brassicas & Legumes mostly: Siberian, winter, hiver, shortest, fall, hunger gap Orientation & Placement Mulch Blankets Water when it’s Warm & Water minimally Cloche/Hoop House/Greenhouse/Old Windows (Maybe)
Even if it’s too late to start early for you this year, consider an early spring garden to prep your soil and grow in that pesky hunger gap. You can garden in many places year round but it takes some planning and strategy! Good Luck & Keep Growing!

Test your Soils pH in Multiple Areas
Alkaline Soils = Nitrates = Weeds & Annuals = Vegetative Growth Acidic Soils = Ammonium = Perennials = Reproductive Growth (Fruit)
Obviously super acidic or alkaline soils exist and are neither suitable for most garden vegetables. You can change their constitution as long as what made them acidic or alkaline is not a constant presence or constantly accumulating. Compost which is soil life & organic matter acts as a universal pH buffer.

Clay - Can Repel Water, Can Resist Aeration & Movement
Sand - Can be Devoid of Organic Matter & Life beyond Pioneer Species, Can be Highly Alkaline, Can Move On its Own
Silt - Can Wash or Blow Away, Easy to Erode, & Easy to Use Up the Nutrient Bank
The Missing Ingredients in all of this are Organic Matter & Soil Life
You can make good soil out of pure sand, silt, or even clay, you just need enough organic matter and the correct biology present. Dr. Elaine Ingham has proven this as have others.
How is it Possible? What can I do?
Grow & Chop & Drop the plants that accumulate the nutrients and biomass that your soil and needs to accomplish the goals you have for that site.
What to Grow?
C4 Grasses for C&OM - Explosive? Carbon Sequestration Kings, Carbon = Organic Matter Legumes & all Nitrogen Fixers for Nitrogen (& Biomass - cowpeas = high C&N) Mustard for Phosphorous & Potassium (pioneers = brassicas partner with actinobacteria which acts a lot like fungi) Daikon Radishes - Aeration, N Scavenge & Release, & Phosphorous Peas & Fava Beans - Winter cover & N&C Comfrey - OM - Minerals? More like Protein, Fiber & Mucopolysaccarides which would call in large numbers of soil life in to break down. Duke’s Phytochemical database doesn’t show them as Dynamic as other plants. Every plants accumulates a spectrum of nutrients that fluctuates with its environment and genetic parentage. Comfrey isn’t “bad” but it isn’t what many have made it out to be: it doesn’t have those hyper deep roots and there aren’t more nutrients deeper - most nutrients are found in the top 6-8” of soil.
If you have what looks like good soil color and some organic matter but are lacking minerals like in Missouri, you may find you still are having issues. You may need to bring in a few things. For one, fungi and bacteria in the soil trap and hold minerals and keep them cycling, so make sure your soils have a thriving soil foodweb economy.
Minerals (Kelp, Seaweed, Fish Emulsion - avoid mining minerals) Machines (Farm-scale Chop & Drop, Planting, & Harvesting, or you may need to rip/keyline the site before you can really affect great change to the soil - you may need swales) Animals - Animal pressure can dramatically change a site in ways not possible through work with a machine or even by hand. Holistically managed grazing can transform many sites that do not respond well to human interaction.
You could DIY everything with a shovel, seeds, and time. That’s what I did in Central Valley California with 140F soils, DCG granite that was bullet proof, & constant animal pressure. It’s possible.
How Fast?
Depends on your diligence. In areas I compost tea’d, swaled, and mulched heavily, it was months, but in other areas further away from my zone 1 it took a couple years to reach the same level of change.

The only reason annuals are more prevalent in our diet and gardens in practice is due to their quick return (within that season or year) and scaling up ability of seed & yield, but it feeds into a cycle that outstrips the land, soil, and even our health.
The age of valuing short term gain over future systemic stability is ending rapidly. Even the World Bank has decided to divest completely from oil and gas extraction.

Have you ever wondered how some people who wrk full time right alongside you have epic gardens with yields all summer long? How do they do that? They make it look effortless. Meanwhile you’re struggling to get things watered, to amend the soil, to prune, to harvest, to chop and drop, and it kind of steals the fun from you?
I was there! A lady up the hill grew 10,000 lbs of tomatoes on a 1/4 of an acre! What was she doing!? I actually have a video of what she was doing on my Facebook page and Youtube - I’ll link to it in the description - she was irrigating her gardens and orchards with her duck pond water - with duck manure! It fed those tomatoes superbly! I didn’t have the money, ducks, permission, or really mechanical know how to pull her system off on my land. Plus it was so dry where we were the debate over water was always always an issue. Perpetually pouring new water into a pond didn’t make sense for us. How could I get from point A to point B with no real money!
Well I figured it out and did it while still a public school teacher struggling to make ends meet - I scaled up to a full 2 acre garden managed with nothing but a knife, a shovel, manure, animals, straw, pallets, some fencing (in the early stages before I stopped using them), and animal feed - it took a progression, one you can see on Powers Permaculture Family Farm on Facebook if you’d like to go back in time and see my trial and error! It took some tinkering and some places are more stubborn than others but I changed our barren decomposed granite into rich deep dark chocolate colored loam in only a few seasons and in some places within a season...

I was there - I wanted a giant garden so I could stop paying huge sums of money for organic food and still provide safe food for my family (my wife is a 3 time cancer survivor and we have two young boys and I was just a substitute teacher at that point - so this HAD to work for me). The deer, wild pigs, ground squirrels, the dead dirt, the drought, the heat. It was all so extreme in the Central Valley of California that most people thought it was impossible to garden there unless you spent more money and time than it was worth. I didn’t have money - I had the ability to research, study, and test the most cutting edge and advanced gardening techniques though - I had access to land and the internet. There are many amazing techniques, methodologies, and disciplines out there, but none of them cut it in the 140°F soils, severe drought, and heavy animal pressure that I was experiencing. It took permaculture design course for me to understand the principles behind my situation, so that I could partner with nature and grow hundreds of pounds of food effortlessly in 2 acre year-round garden without fences while growing feet of soil and astonishing local farmers and enchanting PBS viewers and local visitors. No offsite inputs were used aside from straw, animal feed, manure, and seeds and it was managed with only hand tools.
Is this just for folks in my climate or able-bodied folk like me? No, it’s based on universal natural principles: I’ve taught students how to apply permaculture principles to gardening in all the major climates and on all continents excepting Antartica, helping hundreds of students of all ages and abilities in my online courses over the pasts 2 years. My students are saving gallons of seed, growing hundreds of pounds of food, and growing rampant gardens of unruly beauty - many of my students are also becoming leaders and teachers in their regions and communities, and you can too.
