The Cosmic Shambles Network
Part of the Cosmic Shambles Network, the network for people with curious minds, Science Shambles is a semi regular collection of conversations with scientists about all manner of scientific things. At the Cosmic Shambles Network we create and curates podcasts, digital content and live events for people who want to find out more about our universe through science, art, history, philosophy, music, literature. People who believe ignorance is not bliss. People who want to keep on discovering and learning about our wondrous universe and who want to have a laugh while doing it. People who believe that it is indeed our curiosity that makes us human. We believe we can never stop learning – science will never be finished and that’s exciting. The Cosmic Shambles Network brings together the world’s leading scientists, comedians, writers and performers to create entertaining content fuelled by curiosity. The approach is fun, real, accessible. Amongst the shambles there’s something for everyone.
Dr Kit Champman is a life long motorsport fan and as a scientist, he previously worked with Virgin Racing's Formula E team on the chemistry and material science of their cars. Many innovations, first developed for racing, have been incorporated into everyday life across fields of healthcare, fluid dynamics, climate and, obviously, road cars. His latest book is, Racing Green, and looks into these developments and research, and it's out now. The mantra of 'We're not vaccinated against COVID until the whole world is vaccinated' is now more prevalent than ever. At last year's British MotoGP round at Silverstone Robin Ince went along to meet up with Andrea Coleman and 13 time Grand Prix winner Randy Mamola, founders of the charity Two Wheels for Life. The charity uses motorcycles to deliver healthcare, and now, COVID vaccines to hard to reach rural communities in Africa. Robin, Andrea and Randy chat about their work during the pandemic, how the charity got started and changing the public perception around motorcycles. Special thanks to Dorna and Silverstone. In her new book Overloaded, Cosmic Shambles Network regular Ginny Smith looks at how every aspect of our lives are influenced by our brain chemicals. One of the people she spoke to in researching the book, particularly for the chapter about sleep, was our own Science Shambles co-host Dr Helen Czerski. As part of various research trips Helen has spent a lot of time at sea and in areas of the world with 24 hour daylight. So she and Ginny speak about how our brains need rhythm and routine to function properly so we need to artificially inject it even when it's not present. Just because 4am is meaningless, it doesn't mean we still don't want to get up 'early'... And these issues have come even more to the forefront during the COVID 19 pandemic and lockdown as days all seem to flow into each other and time seems to lose all its meaning... The blue dot Festival takes its name from Carl Sagan's famous Pale Blue Dot speech and as part of the Weekend in Outer Space we at The Cosmic Shambles Network have teamed up with the blue dot festival for this very special event. Ann Druyan joins our own Robin Ince and Professor Brian Cox for a one time conversation.
Ann Druyan is an Emmy and Peabody Award winning writer and producer. She was the Creative Director of NASA's Voyager Interstellar Message Project, better known as "The Golden Record" and co-writer of the iconic series Cosmos presented by her late husband Carl Sagan. They also co-wrote a number of books together, produced the film Contact and now Ann is the creator and co-producer of two Cosmos sequel series "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" and "Cosmos: Possible Worlds"
