As we looked at recent events in sports from high school sport engagement through to the NBA's boycott.  We as parents must understand our role and be supportive of not just our children, but those throughout our various communities.  A group of parents have formed to initiate a national campaign "Get Home Safely".  This campaign will address those things to be considered when you are stopped by law enforcement, whether while driving or walking.  Helping to remember the ultimate goal is to "Get Home Safely".  This campaign was derived from a video created by Dr. David Miller, an important infographic, "10 Rules Of Survival If Stopped By The Police” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqJ-psD9vJw&t=3s).

For decades, youth sports in the United States has been an avenue for kids of all ages to make friends, be physically active, challenge themselves, and learn skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and the value of hard work. All of which can provide great stepping stones towards personal growth and achievement later in life to help them reach their personal level of success. When it comes to mental health, sports can be an immensely positive experience for many participants. Simultaneously, being an athlete may present unique challenges to an individual’s mental health. It is important for parents, family members, coaches, and teammates to understand both the mental health risks and benefits to ensure youth athletes have the greatest opportunity for success and enjoy participating in sports. Mental health is often placed on the back burner or behind all other concerns. If your child shows up at practice with a swollen ankle, the coach will immediately send him/her to the trainer, but if your child get to practice and say to the coach, "I have a few personal things on my mind and plan to miss practice". The coach would be taken by surprise and may have a few colorful words to share with your child ........ Without inquiring the nature of the concerns. Why? Let's discuss this ....

This paragraph has been extracted from the NCAA's website.  I have change the term student-athlete to child-athlete, because we are talking about our children. The topic of child-athlete name, image and likeness has commanded attention and fueled debate in recent months, everywhere from conference rooms to coffee shops to Capitol Hill.  Sad to say the one place this conversation isn't taking place is in the households and minds of the athlete and their parents.  And over the course of 2020, it will be the focus of college sports leaders — university presidents, conference commissioners, athletics directors and others — who will determine what changes the NCAA can and should make to better support today’s child-athletes.  Today, I am encouraging you parents to start making this the focus of your child's recruiting experience.   Questions about the issue rose to new decibels in February, when California legislators proposed a state bill that would enable California student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness — through avenues such as endorsement deals and marketing promotions — without regulation.  This will not go without some form of regulation and oversight from the NCAA & Institutions.

Parents have you taken the time to realize once our children become college athletes their lives become an open book. To the point where not just their athletic talent is being highlighted, but every imperfection of their being is evaluated and scrutinized. This same practice isn’t done for any other student in this institution, so why? I fully understand the marketing requirement, but does it require the level of detail in any of the cases? Finally, at the end of their athletic bio there is a reference to the parents of this phenomenal athlete. It goes to another level once they become professionals ….. Again Why?

Parents this episode with highlight some this you should know about medical insurance coverage in the college athletic recruiting process. What is covered here we hope to add a new prospective to how you and your athlete approach the recruiting process. With this current pandemic will all of this change? Should youth injuries be in consideration? Should more injury prevention be put in place at all levels? The first executive director of the NCAA, Walter Byers would have challenged this notion as he did with “workmen compensation”. The term student-athlete was created in 1964 by him, to ensure we placed the focus on the words “STUDENT” to counter attempts to require universities to pay workers' compensation. So where are we today? Check out this podcast and share it others who have athletes aspiring to play at the college level. Parents this is where our job in this process is important, because do you truly believe your child will inquire about “medical insurance coverage?”

Parents our role in the protection of our family is vitally important from all aspects of life. The Parents Coaching Parents Network hold this philosophy to the high standards of our mission. In this time of these uncertain times, this philosophy is elevated to unprecedented heights. So when the coach reaches out to your child during this pandemic and inform him, he need to be at his workout session the team is having. I truly hope we are all on the same page as it pertains to your response. First of all why is the coach contacting the child during these uncertain times? Why do the coach feel the need to conduct a team practice or any form of workouts? Have every parent been informed of his intentions? Where is the priority? Finally, has he forgot about the health and safety precaution of these children?

Checkout this short, but insightful podcast because this conversation was derived from a post on social media and requires our attention as parents.

Two influencers (Duke Pryor & Greg Turner) in the game of college basketball at its highest level. These two giants mentored many of the NBA stars and superstars of today. The young high school athletes they came in contact with during the NCAA’s initiative call “First Team” has proven to be added value to our today’s NBA stars. In my humble opinion the NCAA’s First Team program was one of the best mentoring programs in the country as it pertains to youth basketball. Listen to this episode to find out more about this wonderful past initiative.
