C&O But Slow PreviewCelebrate 10 Years of Pedalshift Live 6/8* The march to the ten year anniversary of the show commences… Live show to celebrate things June 8th, at 8pm ET. It will be podcasted the following week but always down for some live banter. It’ll be on the YouTube channel and here at pedalshift.net/live.
The basics* Full size bike * New config (more on that in a moment) * Cumberland with Amtrak from DC and then… ? * Going with a stove this time * All camping * Forecast looks like rain * I’m getting over a cold, so not sure how that will impact things
New config?* The front rack from last season is fine but I want to try something new * Found I couldn’t get the bike in the Dogsbody bag last year and I didn’t want to keep having to install/unintall. Might end up on my ebike? * Solution: Fork bags + Hanging sleep kit from bars * 7L each side * Very narrow – a little too narrow? * Allows me to be a bit more nimble
Pacing* First night will be close to a new moon unfortunately * Would love to do 20 miles even though it’s night riding * Don’t have specific plans for any particular campsites * The end of the tour is up in the air… I have two options (Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry) so if I’m really enjoying the riding, I can make the miles. But if I’m enjoying the vibes (or other things) I can make this a shorter trip with some road riding on the final day
Food/water* Will likely carry more food than I have on past trips * BUT going to do backpacking meals. Keeping it simple and light * NPS no longer treats the wells, so I have a new gravity fed water filter. Trying not to carry as much as I have in the past * Stove needed for meals, so I can at also enjoy coffee * Weather * Looks wet but not hot. Will be prepared * This might be the thing that impacts choosing a short or long ride… trail conditions, preferring to stay in the tent for a morning rain, etc. etc.
Other stuff* Paw Paw tunnel is reopened! * Not intending on climbing up to stay at my cabin (although it’s a backup option) * Name of the game is slow and steady and enjoying the ride rather than just banging out miles. Would have preferred a little more riding time on Saturday to spread it out a bit more As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! The Physics of Cycling1. Rolling Resistance
- Definition: Explain rolling resistance as the force that opposes the motion when an object (like a bicycle tire) rolls on a surface.
- Factors Affecting Rolling Resistance:
- Tire Type and Pressure: Soft tires or low pressure increases resistance.
- Surface Type: Rough surfaces like gravel increase resistance compared to smooth surfaces like pavement.

Regina Yan is a UX designer and artist based in Washington DC. She grew up in Kansas and was a very “indoorsy” child, but fell in love with the outdoors after going to school in New Hampshire. When the pandemic hit, she got into cycling and immediately fell loved the way biking expanded her world. So much so, in the fall of 2021, kind of on a whim decided to try biking the East Coast Greenway from ME to Key West, FL completing the 3,000 miles trip in an intensely compact 29 days, experiencing all the ups and downs of a bike touring lifestyle.
What made you to choose the ECG for your trip over another route?
You described it as response to a “quarter life crisis” – did the ride help that or prompt more introspection on where you’re at in life?
Your film did a great job of sharing the lows as much as the highs… sometimes when I look back on lows of my tours, I look back on them more as the “type 2 fun” we all talk about in the bike travel community. How do you assess your lows now – any one stand out?
With such an aggressive schedule, the mechanicals you had were extra disruptive but you still persevered! Did you have any takeaways from them for future tours?
One small part of your film that stuck with me was learning how to eat on tour, watching you pull what looked like frosted shredded wheat from a baggy… was that one of the solutions for you? What did you learn as you rode about all of this?
What bike did you ride and outside of the mechanicals did you like how it performed? Considering any changes to gearing or anything like that?
Do you have another long distance trip in mind?

California 2023 – PreviewRemember how the The Missing Link created another missing link? Well, in March 2023 we’re finally going to fill that in! It’s a new California adventure, but with a lower case A so I don’t hear from Disney lawyers…The ride(s)This isn’t so much a linear tour as it is kind of a greatest hits of adventures in multiple chapters.Chapter 1 – LAX to AnaheimA transit assisted ride from LAX to Anaheim, featuring the LA Metro Green line and a fun ride from Norwalk to Anaheim on Ball Rd.Chapter 2 – Anaheim to the Missing LinkA ride, a coastal bus fast forward and getting to flash my Marine Base ID to complete the Missing Link! Then a quick coastal train to beatiful San Diego…Chapter 3 – Border Run LoopA ride, a short ferry, and revisting the end-point of my 2014 tour at the Mexican border… and back!Chapter 4 – The Mileage RunThe adventure to unlock elite status on Alaska Airlines, plus to test my Brompton gate checking systems! Plus, Northern California? Sure![NOTE… I will be purchasing carbon offsets for this. I recognize there’s a stupidity to doing this in light of climate change, so I’m going to try to ameliorate that.]The gearWell, the Brompton obviously.Ortlieb front luggage block setupLarger drysack on the back (learned my lesson from FL – just need more capacity)Need to be prepared for chillier temps than FL, especially in the mornings.Rain is unlikely, but I plan to have my rain jacket as my warm outer layerTrying very hard to reduce the amount of clothes to the bare minimum (had to pack more civilian clothes for FL and didn’t use them)Revisiting my tool bag… brought too many of the wrong things to FL (more for the Safari).The weatherSimply glorious… Mid 60s as highs, lows in the 40s.Hints of rain in the long range forecast?May cycle in long pants but bring a pair of shortsThe adventuresSo much fun on this trip… staying near Disneyland and grabbing a drink with a work friend after the first day.Fun transit fast forwards (hello 2023 goals!)Checking the box on the Missing Link (and reusing my base pass!)Planes… trains… automobiles (bus!) Florida 2023 – Takeaways1 – I really love this ride, but I want to ride the Cross Florida Trail next year2 – I also really like integrating cycling with my Disney World visits, so I hope to do that in addition to that ride.3 – Touring on Brompton means you have to clean parts regularly and avoid touching some parts altogether.4 – I’m still not fully satisfied with my Brompton touring setup, but I’m also finding it’s pretty good as is.5 – Florida is not a terrible bicycling state, except where it is.6 – When faced with headwinds, lower your expectations and go with (well, against) the flow.7 – Bring all the tools you need, yes even that $1 crescent wrench.8 – I prefer clothing coverage over sunscreen when I can.9 – You don’t need to carry thousands of calories of food with you when you’re within a few miles of civilization.10 – I finally have a name for what happens to me during bike tours… it’s called edema and it’s the body holding onto water for days because of the stress the body undergoes during rides. Florida 2023 – Day 1Folks, I ended up having to toss about 30 minutes of witty banter and ride info because the headwinds from Tampa to Lakeland were simply brutal. I used a dedicated recorder with a “dead cat” lavalier microphone and the winds still managed to cut through.Some of what you hear won’t sound great, but the vast majority is understandable. Florida 2023 Tour Preview“Sure it’s the same route, but is it?”
Tampa to Lakeland to Disney World, sure but it’s refined!
Improved route on day 1 – optimising better route from TPA to MLK Blvd (avoiding waterfront this time)
Brought my route north of downtown this year to avoid weekend activities intervening like last year’s marathon
A morning coffee and breakfast in Ybor CIty, the Cuban and Latin American-influenced part of Tampa
Different hotel in Lakeland this year to have me closer to a local dining option rather than gas station cuisine
Day 2 features another ride into WDW, with the option of the longer route to the north entrance – more to come on that, and it would be my preferred option pending time (short days) and energy
Gear
I briefly considered the Safari and stealth camping near the Van Fleet trail but decided against it… FL wildlife is just too much of a question mark
Also it’s much more logisitically to haul. May scope out to see if stealth hammock camping would be an option this trip.
Brompton it is… credit card touring it is
Sidebar – my Brompton is over at BicycleSpace (my DC LBS) and let’s just say I’ve ridden down the original drivetrain components to the point that it needed quite the overhaul. But… it’ll be ready by the time you hear this for 2024 adventures (thank you Pedalshift Society and anonymous donors for your help on that!)
May consider doing the older backpack version to eliminate the need for the duffle? More carrying capacity, but likely wouldn’t use it.
If so I might consider an expanded cockpit option with the luggage block being freed up
Or… may stick with single pannier plus drybag on rack.
SIDEBAR 2 – I got new Ortlieb backrollers, but orange is no longer an option so I went with blue, which was the most stealth-friendly-ish option. I’m probably going to make the orange ones full time Brompton ones so end of an era, but not really?

Last year was sunny and flirted with hot. Will be more prepared this year to cover up and have sunscreen in hand before day 1.
However, we saw some truly cold temps during the late year storms in 22 so it’s always possible this ends up being a cool to cold ride… will know more about 10 days out and can bank on things about 3 days out.
Things I want to do
Ybor City – every time I go through there I feel like I need to make miles. This time, I’m stopping.
Dinner at a more “Florida” option in Lakeland
Get a victory drink (to break Dryuary Part 1) at the Coronado or Polynesian Resort
Keep my caloric party within reason

Run into 10ks
Lose my ID
Get sunburn or otherwise too much sun
Have a Brompton mechanical… there are very few options in central FL!

This winter I’m going to try to do a few things in prep for my winter tour (preview coming next episode!)Goal 1 – lose 10 pounds from 1/1 to day 1 of tour (stretch goal 12)Goal 2 – Train a minimum of 30 minutes per day 3 days/week (indoor or outdoor)Goal 3 – Plan and begin upper body and/or circuit trainingMy shifting philosophy on training – easier to just jump on the bike when you’re younger and fitter!Other/more aggressive philosophies:biketours.com – riding average daily distance several times per week well in advance of the tour (IMO this is total overkill)ACA – Focus on time in the saddle first, seek hills, build endurance, ride with weight (VERY smart)REI – sample training week with fantastic exercise routines, with focus on flexibility. Empire State Trail – Day 6Audio update for day 6… my phone was still recovering from its dousing on days 4 and 5, so audio quality takes a hit late in the day 6 shows. Howly winds in some segments but totally listenable if not up to snuff by my usual standards!

Quick sidebar before we get started on Day 6… for those of you who listened to last week’s best of regarding the Eastern Express, Frank’s website is indeed retired so his old cue sheets are only out there if you downloaded them back in the day. His route is a combination of current ACA routes and FOTS Preston Paige Piper checked in with the ACA for the details:
In order to ride Frank Moritz’ original entire Eastern Express Route, you’ll have to use a combination of our TransAmerica Trail, Eastern Express Connector, and Chicago to New York City routes. The combo of these 3 routes follow Frank’s original route with a few deviations that we decided to make when we took over the route.
The deviations are likely for the better… as Frank mentioned in our chat the route was a beta and he got a bunch of local help tweaking it, and now ACA has it in their system and updates as conditions warrant.

Tampa to Disney World Bike Tour Preview
A year off, but back with another central Florida in winter tour Adding some new complexity to this one with some exploration of cycling in and around the WDW property in a calculated and safe fashion The basics TPA-Orlando area Brompton 3 days of riding All roofed lodging Minimal gear and carry New things I’m trying this trip – a new more elasticy, form-fitting Brompton cover that I’m very excited about (#stealthmode) Rough Itinerary Day 1 – Fly DC to TPA early; ride to Lakeland, FL (~45 miles) Day 2 – Casual start ; ride to WDW resort (~48 miles) Day 3 – Ride from resort up and around WDW property, including multiple resort cycling paths (~25-30 miles) Routing Day 1 ride is directly from TPA airport (2019 got a ride, 2020 rode to TPA) Considered a slightly further north than my 2019 route, but wanted to ride through downtown and the beautiful waterfront trail, so I added a couple of extra miles… then I rejoin the 2019 route until I hit Lakeland Slightly different route in Lakeland to account for staying on the northeast side of town, rather than the rental I did last time Decided on hotel over Airbnb largely for value vs. cost Day 2 ride initially was going to end after Dean Still Rd, the long rural straight west to east shot to the south of Disney property Many of the Disney roads are shoulderless and high speed, and frankly just not safe to ride Original plan was I’d do day 3 riding on resort paths, but was finding a dearth of info on whether I could bring my Brompton on Disney transportation between resorts (leaning no, but maybe stealth mode it passes as a stroller?) OR if I could get past security via rideshare for resorts I wasn’t staying at without a dining reservation (probably? maybe? unclear). I was pretty stuck BUT, an email got me rethinking things Listener and central Floridian cyclist Dale P. sent me an email about roads to ride in the area and also alerting me to a brand new video that was put up by YouTube Alex Regino about… you guessed it… cycling on Disney property (video here) Turns out there are a few newish roads on property and a few lesser-traveled ones that are not take-your-life-in-your-hands riding AND it seems that cycling into at least one of the resort properties was not barred. So I spent some time on Google Maps Street View and… I can safely ride to the resort I’m staying at on day 2, which to me is a HUGE win. I’ll document it all for you, of course. Day 3 is the fun one. Going back to the Dale and Alex tips, I’ll backtrack out of my resort and go to the northern side of the property and re-enter using the route suggested by Alex. From there I’ll do about 25-30 miles of riding through some of the bike-specific paths available (Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, Old Key West and Saratoga Springs… perhaps others). My hope is to lay down a route for anyone who brings a bike to WDW and wants to ride, along with a real assessment of safety. Then that night I’m going to celebrate by drinking around the Monorail resorts… sans bike. Weather Could be hot (it’s been in the upper 80s within the last week or two) Could be cold (it’s been in the 50s in the last week or two) Looks to be dry and seasonal though – low chance of rain and highs in the upper 70s or very low 80s with some overcast skies (WAHOO!) I’ll make sure I dial in the right gear based on weather forecasts as I get within a couple of days of leaving Seems like this will match the two previous rides (earlier in the year in 2019 and 2020) I encountered really excellent conditions, and only a bit of drizzle in 2020 Documenting the ride Pretty much all of the March episodes of the pod I might try to do some video on this one, particularly the WDW riding – TBD I’ll also be able to assess what resorts are the best ones to consider if you’re hoping to bicycle to them. Wrapup Excited to share this one with you, and particularly intrigued with the unusual nature of the WDW resort riding… this is certainly a route not done very often, and while I have to assume someone has included WDW as a stop on a contiguous bicycle tour, there’s nothing I can dig up on it. Also, the Disney property is full of really interesting flora and fauna for day 3, so it should be a unique way to wrap up the tour.

Route Scouting Shorter Tours + Honorable Mentions
NoBo Missing Link (CA) I talked about this on an earlier pod, but I’m flipping things round (literally) to avoid a logistics issue and make it safer Quick review – the missing link is the portion of the SoCal route I fast forwarded around in 2014 Marine Base Pendleton is restricted Southern gate is where you get access… not great for SoBo travelers Original missing link tour was SoBo using I-5, which I think is still doable, but why? New idea – start in San Diego and time my arrival to that southern gate. Get access. Continue Likely to end the trip in Anaheim, making it a true missing link tour, plus some additional mileage for interest. I really like this one. Pine Creek Valley RT (PA) Brand new to me, thanks to Reddit. Starts in Jersey Shore, PA (insert fist pumping and Situation jokes here) ends in Stokesdale, PA Follows Pine Creek, a trib of the Susquehanna River I’m familiar with the area as it’s in the same valley that I drive through to go back to WNY 62 miles – would likely do this as an out and back in 2-3 days Good camping options, not a lot of towns – pretty remote Probably some easy stealth options too Would need to do this later in the spring, just to have better weather Might be interesting to link to a DC or Cabin to Rochester ride with its proximity to the N/S PA bike route Greenbrier River Trail (WV) Brand new to me, thanks to Reddit. About a 3.5 hour drive from my cabin 78 miles, formerly part of the Chesapeake& Ohio railway – would likely do this as an out and back in 3 days Runs parallel to the Greenbrier River, from the town of Caldwell to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Great map shows off the many access points, restrooms, water points and more Camping looks good with serval state parks on route Probably some easy stealth options too Trail is near towns, but goes through just a few with amenities, so I see carrying more food This is in southeastern WV so it might be more doable if an earlier spring tour is in the cards? I like this one because I’d like to explore more of the state. It’s rugged and beautiful and I’ve lived here long enough I need to see other parts! Honorable mentions Natchez Trace – MJ liked this one… definitely cannot fathom this one in the summer. Spring, then? Or maybe winter? Empire State Trail – look, this is happening at some point to or from NYC. Does spring make sense? Cowboy Trail – This one gets a lot of love, but Nebraska is tricky to get to and from easily. Needs more research

Route Scouting Dayton to St. Louis
This goes back to the before times… piecing together a cross-country ride in segments. 2019: DC to Cincinnati (passed through Xenia, OH near Dayton) 2018: Kansas City – St. Louis via the Katy Trail The gap in between… Dayton to St. Louis will get me contiguous ride from DC to KC, which leaves a really interesting segment or two to get to the west coast. So why not make that happen? The route Eastern Express? Pro’s – it’s scouted, has great cue sheets Con’s – not the most exciting route – focuses on flat and low traffic Another route? Google maps? I might do this to supplement an alternate route Logistics Direct flights from DCA to Dayton Tag the OTET, then turn west Emphasis on camping (perhaps stealth) EE route goes through some towns with roofed lodging, but not many Bike Definitely would use the full sized bike Fully loaded Camping I’d rely a lot on the excellent work done by Frank Moritz (Pedalshift Project 079) When I’ve gone through the cue sheets before, I’ve found some of the camping to be only so-so I’d almost assuredly mix in some stealth camping – I’ve had good luck in parks with wooded fringes, but there’s a lot of options Would probably try to find my way to a St Louis hotel with a shuttle to the airport to allow for a more casual pack up Time of year Spring seems like a better bet Summer = muggy/hot/exposed What this gets me The next ride would be KC to Ft. Collins, CO The ride after that would be Ft. Collins to Boise The segment after that is Boise to Portland? Maybe!

ACA route Ideal in spring Fly in and out from Austin Probably 5-6 days Mostly camping Excellent resources ACA maps Ride with GPS map with resources Downsides limited services in spots water sprawl/traffic/bad interactions Logisitics Brompton capable? Love the in-out via Austin (no car rentals, maybe even no Lyfts needed) Mostly camping, probably some hoteling needed Initial assessment TX hill country gets a lot of great reviews Very unnerved by the reports of bad driver interactions Need to see what the camping situation is – state parks fill up but there might be city park options – Reddit post on camping I hear anecdotally that stealth camping in TX is tricky because it’s mostly private land and high sensitivity to trespassing

First Tour of 2022 First tour of 2022 is… central FL! But what route? Still hashing out options! Original plan was fly to Tampa and take the same route to Central FL as past years New plan (maybe?) – drive down in the LACROSSE! with the dogs and Kimberly, celebrate our anniversary first and then do some kind of two day ride West to east? Same route or take some of the trails that run much further north of my classic route? WORK IN PROGRESS Bike? Very likely the Brompton no matter what I anticipate needing a fast forward in a Lyft or Uber on the Orlando side because I’m likely doing a day or so at WDW and as I’ve mentioned before, the Mouse is not digging on the bikes. Too bad. Lodging? TBD. I currently have a hotel in Lakeland set up (did Airbnb last time… was nice, but COVID makes me want hotels this go around) If I change to the trail route, I may consider camping IF we do the drive. Weather? Gear? January is usually pretty nice… can be cool, can be warm. It’s a bit of a crap shoot, but I can assure you it’s better than DC or WV Will prepare for rain and if I’m doing any camping, will be using my modified Brompton touring setup unless the conditions seem dodgy, inc which case we’ll do the tried and true Path Less Pedaled style backback trick (but again, only if we drive) Am I ever going to do a tour that isn’t one I’ve done before? I’ll answer that with a question… when is this pandemic going to ease the eff back? Sidebar… this is all pandemic-willing. As we sit here on 12/10/21 Omicron variant seems like it might be a thing, so we’ll see. I am boosted, so I feel pretty confident, but if the variant and the vax doesn’t mesh, I may rejigger elements of this. I’m very excited for this ride. AMA Just some of the questions asked…
Are you going to do a tour outside of the US in 2022? Is the Green Goblin unretired? Whatever happened to bikepacking – are you still considering that? I want to do my first bike tour, but I’m scared of going by myself. What’s your tips? What’s the best way to avoid chaffing on tour?
