Koal Bee (Sneakers54.net)
Sneakers 54 was established in 1976 when a group of friends got together after deciding they had to do something about the lack of good West end clubs that played Jazz,Funk & Soul music. They were finding that in order to gain entry into clubs they would need to dress in suits, pay extortionate entrance fees, and then have to listen to pop music for hours until the DJ decided to play the odd Soul tune at the end of the night. The next move was to hire venues in the West End and hold our own club nights playing the music we loved. The nights became more regular and soon built up a following that had been looking for the same things as us; they wanted to listen and dance to the best in Jazz, Funk & Soul in a friendly and safe environment. We decided to name ourselves "Sneakers 54" after the classic Jazz-Funk track by Sea Level , the one track which closely resembled the spectrum of music we most enjoy and play at our club nights.... And we still believe ........it's all about the vinyl ! If you enjoy any of the music played here, please support the artists and buy their music ...Coz, without them we have no music ;-)

After a sleepless night I turned up at the studio at an unearthly hour on Sunday morning.
The production team couldn't be enticed to leave their beds at such an hour so it a strictly solo effort. Tune in to find out how I got on...as you can see from the title, Seawind featured a fair bit in the show, so it ended up being a bit of a tribute show.

An old show paying tribute to a dear friend who we sadly lost way too soon.

At the risk of alienating some of the listeners I felt I had to do a show to raise awareness of the "Black Lives Matter" movement. Being of Asian descent and arriving in the UK from Africa in the mid 60's, as a child I went through youth being subjected to racial discrimination, fearing for my safety on a daily basis on my journey to and from school. I will never know what it is like to be a black person living in the USA but I have empathy with their situation. The show contains many tunes and poems by Gil Scott Heron, an artist who raised awareness of the problems in USA with his music and is considered by many to be the first rapper/MC ever.
