Hello and welcome to the Inspiring women in business podcast. My name is Ruth Gilbey, and I’m a business and marketing coach. I’m on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business.
You can expect practical advice, inspiring stories and a lot of aha moments as we uncover and kick to the curb all the obstacles you have been putting in your way.
There are so many messages out there about pushing through your comfort zone you can end up thinking if it doesn’t hurt I must be doing it wrong. But what if you need your business to be comfortable and safe because you’re already dealing with life stuff? For example looking after elderly parents, being a career, or dealing with a chronic illness?
In this interview, Laura shares how she’s adapted her own business to suit her, her goals, and her family. And how she’s expanding her comfort zone rather than pushing through it. Laura shares valuable lessons she learned that changed and simplified the way she runs her business.

During Covid, Amy Jones had a moment where she thought it was game over for her in-person yoga business. Still, after a conversation with her Mum, who offered her money to get her through the next 6 months, Amy decided no Covid wasn’t going to take away her business.
She then learned everything she could about taking her business online, and that’s how our paths crossed in 2021 during a live round of my free Business Breakthrough Training. We’ve been working together inside my business coaching membership online business collective for over a year and nearly as long working 1-2-1 together.
Amy now mentors other yoga teachers on how to have profitable yoga businesses they’re proud of and has a successful online yoga business and an enviable easy way of doing her marketing and making sales.
She’s a true inspiration, have a listen.

More about Ruth:
Hi, I’m Ruth, a business coach specializing in helping freelancers and business owners adjust their mindset and their marketing so they can get fully booked with clients they LOVE to work with. I’ve helped hundreds of self-employed women achieve the time and money freedom they craved.
I’ve started this podcast because when I first went all in and left the corporate world to be a freelancer, I was grateful for any work that came my way. After over 20 years of freelancing and working for other people, I started to realize I’d created a glass ceiling for myself.
In 2017, I finally started listening to that voice that had been telling me for a long time that I wasn’t doing what I loved and fulfilling my true potential. It took a critical illness to give me that wake-up call. I don’t want the same to happen to you.
You can expect practical advice, inspiring stories, and a lot of aha moments as we uncover and kick to the curb all the obstacles you have been putting in your way.

Feeling sad and unmotivated about your business is a real thing. The many toxic positivities out there do not help business owners normalise the ups and downs of having a business. What we need to do is to accept these feelings, face them, and plan our next step.
In this episode, Ruth Gilbey shares 5 practical steps to help you reflect and get your motivation back if you’ve fallen out of love with your business.

Key takeaways from this episode:
5 Practical Steps to Do if You’re Feeling Unmotivated:
Don’t make rash decisions based on temporary emotions but equally, don’t stay stuck. Make sure there's nothing else going on, like literally being tired! Overwhelming and burnout is s the real thing.
Take a break or get a change of scenery and have a good night’s sleep. Take some time out and revisit the problem. This works for all issues, not just falling out of love with your business!
Get curious. Dig deeper into why you might have fallen out of love with what you’re doing.
Give yourself permission to change your mind or evolve your business. Know that it's ok to change what you're doing but do it on your terms and your time frame.
Find the right person to talk things through. This isn't always a family member but someone who will understand you and what you’re doing.

You’ve set up your email marketing tech and started emailing your list… now what?
List building and email marketing end up way down on business owners' list of priorities.
I was thinking about how I’m often trying to persuade people that prioritising list building is a good idea, but instead, why don't I show you how you can make money from it? Then that’s much more of an incentive to get going right or finally take it seriously.
In this episode, I talk about The 3 Ways You Can start monetising your list today without a big fancy funnel and loads of tech.
This episode was inspired by a conversation and some longer training inside my ongoing coaching programme, The Online Business Collective.
Key takeaways from this episode:
Fads will come and go but e-mail marketing is always there.
Whenever you're doing something in your business, you need a goal. You need to know why you're doing it.
There isn't just one way of running your business. There are multiple ways.
Having an e-mail list is a tried and tested thing that has been working for many years.
It's important to upgrade your marketing mindset. Start selling in every e-mail.
If you start right from the beginning of talking about your offers in your e-mails, people won't be surprised or offended.
It's possible to add value and be helpful whilst having a very transparent and authentic call to action to sell in your e-mail.
Share your tips and stories and then relate them to something that you sell.
Add a super signature to the bottom of your e-mails.

In this podcast episode, I share what keeps me going and what practical things you can do to survive and even thrive during a recession, because emails and podcasts like this have helped me and I want to help you right now.

Is it really all in the mind? Are we being compassionate and kinder to ourselves if we numb our negative feelings and just keep on going to achieve success? In this episode, I interview Jacqui Acree and she enlightens us about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or commonly called tapping. She also shares about the self-help industry, the good and the bad.
It’s a great episode. Have a listen.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE
Remember to be aware of what our body is telling us. It is not just about positive thinking, working harder, and pushing through.
Failure is a necessary part of success. It's not a failure on one side and success on the other, and you only get one. Failure is part of the experience of success, it's a journey, and you hit failure along the way.
Self-sabotage is a form of protection. When we look at it like that, we can begin to honor its intent and then let it go.
It's so important to be able to permit yourself to feel and feel the things that you feel.
When we numb some feelings, we actually numb all of them. If you numb the "negative feelings" like anxiety, fear, disappointment, we are also numbing joy, maybe pleasure in some way.
Visualizing a hard thing is going to catalyze a stress response in your body. When our body is stressed, it will go to fight or flight, we lose access to our rational perspective, logical brain. And we need those to show up and shine in life, whether business or life in general.
Procrastination is always a stress response.
Emotional Freedom Techniques, commonly called tapping, is a blend of acupressure and psychology.
Emotional Freedom Techniques or tapping can help us go through what our bodies really feel. It helps us better transition to what steps we should take next to achieve our goals.

More about Ruth:
Hi, I’m Ruth, a business coach specializing in helping freelancers and business owners adjust their mindset and marketing so they can get fully booked with clients they LOVE to work with.
I’m on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business.

Is it necessarily bad to feel envious or jealous? Should we really be ashamed of these emotions? Or do they give us a clue of what we truly desire to take action on them? International Women's Day is happening this month and today, I really wanted to do an episode around working collaboratively, supporting each other, and empowering other women, which is a huge value of mine. But as I started to write this episode I wanted to talk about more about the days when you don’t feel like that. In this episode, I talked about the best reframe for envy of comparisonitis that would make room for effectively collaborating and supporting others.
Key takeaways from this episode:
Collaborating rather than competing means you really believe there's enough out there for everyone.
People can support each other without any agenda.
It's normal to feel envious or compare yourself but you can always strive to be the best version of yourself.
When you envy someone, you don't necessarily want to take something away from them or wish something bad for them, you envy what they have or how they got it.
Jealousy is something you can be curious about or something you can explore.
Our emotions make us aware of what we truly desire and we can take action on those desires.
When you truly allow yourself to explore your feelings, be human, and be curious about what emotion or belief is telling you then you can make more room for abundance, collaboration, generosity, and supporting others.

There comes a point in your life when you realize that
your usual daily living needs a shift. Do you need to be
on top of the game to venture into something different from
your usual expertise?
In this episode, former blogger and Online Business Strategist Gemma Bonham Carter talks about creating
courses, launching courses, the right mindset around launching
a course, how she started, and the lessons she has learned.
It's a great episode packed with value that you're going
to love.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE
Finding the right thing for you does not happen overnight.
You sometimes have to take different gigs to find what will
best suit you.
Everyone may think that they should be experts and have all
the credentials to be able to start a course, but it is easier to grasp lessons from a peer-to-peer kind of mentor than that of an expert.
Hesitations also include the idea that the market is saturated,
but the fact is, it's continuously growing, which gives more
opportunities.
Commitment, persistence, genuine care for your students,
and long-term visions are some of the most important things
you should consider for your course to be successful.
It is normal to have hesitations and sit in discomfort, but the
success will be worth it.

I’m on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business.

In this episode, Sam Colclough of As Good As Your Mind shares why you need to prioritise managing your mind. She talks about your mind as your biggest asset when making those changes in your business and life. Sam talks about her story, and her hypnosis, solution-focused therapy, and how she’s helped 100s of women including myself show up as the best version of themselves.
Listen and enjoy!
Key takeaways from this episode:
Hypnosis replicates REM (Rapid Eye Movement), the part of the process of our sleep designed to move things around and compartmentalise and make sense of it, naturally reducing what's going on in the stress bucket.
It's not until you have that conscious awareness around what your mind is doing to start to make the change.
Solution-focused therapy is really about empowering the client and helping them understand that they always have the solutions within them, and they've always got the answer.
You are limitless at your core. You are the only person that's stopping you from achieving all of your potentials.
If we stop ourselves from taking action, the primitive mind always wins because it continues to get that evidence that we're not getting what we want. However, there are ways you can manage this.

Is podcasting for you? How can it help you with what you are doing right now? Is it worth your time and effort?
In this episode, my first ever podcast guest, podcast, and business coach, Lynsay Anne Gould, talks about the hows and whys of podcasting. She shares about the industry of podcasting how it can help you whether you are a business owner or a freelancer.

If you're looking to get out of corporate, if you're looking to start a new business or pivot in your business, get some extra support. You can do part-time and build your business gradually.
A podcast is an excellent way for people to feel connected to you to get to know you. By the time somebody is ready to chat with you about working with you, they already feel like they know you.
If you can really get behind why you want to do something that will push you forward, just take a small step every day.

I’ve started this podcast because when I first went all in and left the corporate world to be a freelancer, I was grateful for any work that came my way. After over 20 years of freelancing and working for other people, I started to realize I’d created a glass ceiling for myself.
It was in 2017 when I finally started listening to that voice that had been telling me for a long time that I wasn’t doing what I loved and fulfilling my true potential. It took a critical illness to give me that wake-up call. I don’t want the same to happen to you.
You can expect practical advice, inspiring stories, and a lot of aha moments as we uncover and kick to the curb all the obstacles you have been putting in your way.
I’m on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business.

Hello and welcome to the Inspiring Women in Business podcast. My name is Ruth Gilbey, and I’m a business and marketing coach. I’m on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business.
I’ve started this podcast because when I first went all in and left the corporate world to be a freelancer, I was grateful for any work that came my way.
I was a new Mum of twins on maternity leave in a recession, Googling jobs that could be done from home and around my family. I remember that low point when someone suggested a job in Sainsbury’s, no disrespect to anyone who works in a supermarket, but my last role was a senior operations manager, managing large teams and big budgets. I’d completely overlooked the 20 years of experience I had running projects and growing businesses. I had vital business experience in accounts, sales, project management, marketing, customer service, and managing teams. However, I disregarded this experience and thought all my skills were irrelevant or out of date.
I lost confidence, dumbed down my skills and never even considered being a business owner. I thought this was what other people did.
I then got the online courses bug, upskilled in anything and everything to do with digital marketing and reinvented myself as a digital marketer. I defined myself as the last course I did. I always thought I need “just one more course” before I took action. And even though I embrace lifelong learning, I hadn’t done vital work on working out what I wanted, as I’d never permitted myself to have the business I wanted. I had no idea what mindset, imposter syndrome or limiting beliefs meant as it had been 20 years since I’d challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone.
In 2017, I finally started listening to that voice that had been telling me for a long time that I wasn’t doing what I loved and wasn’t fulfilling my true potential. It took a critical illness to give me that wake-up call. I don’t want the same to happen to you.
