In this series, we begin exploring seven convictions that define who we are and guide what we do.

Convictions are firmly held, personal or corporate beliefs. Convictions are core principles rooted in personal values, moral standpoints, and social standards.

Our vision at Neighbors is simple in response to Jesus’ prayer…

“In San Diego as it is in heaven…”

We do this by

Being with Jesus

Becoming like Jesus

Doing what Jesus did

The operating system behind all of this though is our convictions. Ultimately, we live our core principles rooted in personal values, moral standpoints, and social standards.

Ultimately, all Christian practices, from Sunday attendance, community groups, fasting, feasting, silence, solitude, sabbath, scripture reading, they all turn their focus outward onto others who are not yet in the family of God.

Therefore, this year’s theme, Who We Are and What We Do

We’re going to spend the next year exploring who we are as a community, what makes us uniquely us and what we actually do as Jesus’ people, not just for the betterment of our own interior lives, but for the sake of others.

As we attempt to orient ourselves towards Advent Peace, we often met with self-perpetuated obstacles - the “chaos” of this world and our own sin. We attempt to manufacture our own forms of peace by way of curation, consumption, and escape. These malformed practices are diversions from a true sense of peace. Jesus illuminates the true Path of Peace - a peace that doesn’t come in the ways of the world. But he doesn’t only show us the way. In his incarnation, taking flesh and atoning for our sins, he carries us along this path in an act of mercy. And in this act - he becomes the personification of peace.

Be sure to join us for this beautiful season of anticipating + longing for the arrival of our King. Each Sunday we will focus on one of the four themes of Advent: Hope, Joy, Peace, + Love.

In this podcast reflection, Alexis Braga talks through how isolation has afforded her a time of slowing down and increased her hope for the future by looking back at God's past works in not only her own life, but throughout the history of the church.

At the root of all human desire is a longing be known and loved. Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well is an amazing lesson on how God sees us, knows us, loves us, and transforms us. Jesus’ communities are humans who have encountered him and come to understand themselves as loved so that they can love others.

At the end of John the Baptist’s ministry he displayed a heart that was fully confident in God’s good plans for his life. He didn’t find his joy in fame or in increasing his platform but in pointing to Jesus. We can learn and apply much from the Baptist’s attitude as he pointed to Jesus above all else.

Jesus is inviting us to taste and see that he is good. And he tells us that it is not by our own merit but by his selfless sacrifice that we receive access to the Kingdom of God. In order for us to experience the fullness that God has for us, we must shed the idea that we can continue to live our own way.

There is no question that Jesus of Nazareth was an enigmatic character and terribly provocative. Through His animated behavior in the temple cleansing scene in John 2, we see both God's holiness and His loving heart. As humans partner with God, we become the new temple of His holy presence on earth as it is in heaven.

John structures his theological biography of Jesus around seven signs. At a wedding in Cana, Jesus’ friends were facing a humiliating social crisis; they’d run out of wine! Jesus took this opportunity to teach his followers multiple lessons both by his initial denial to help and his ultimate miracle in transforming water into wine. This first sign is freighted with hope and joy as it highlights our purification from sin and the life Jesus grants his closest confidants as they serve him obediently.

We are apprentices of Jesus practicing His way in the world. As we are with Jesus, we become like Jesus, as we become like Jesus, we do what He did. This shapes a healthy discipleship culture that multiplies, transforms, and invites. God intends to change the world through three simple words, "Come and see."

John the Baptist was the eccentric older cousin of Jesus of Nazareth. He had separated himself from the corruption of his culture and escaped into the wilds of the Judean deserts. In the silence and solitude, John's message formed. His words paved the way for the coming of the Messiah. Today, the church must once again separate herself from the chaos to discern God's voice that we might prepare the way of the Lord in this generation.

John’s gospel opens with a lofty prologue that is one of the most dense and powerful pieces of literature ever written. He establishes the themes that will weave through his work. Darkness and light, above and below, the Logos, the Baptist, and the decision that all humanity faces are front and center. John presents Jesus as the source and reason for all of existence, and the only true light shining in the darkness.

God is working through our lives not only in this life but in the generations of lives that will come after us. Pursuing humility, living with integrity, and growing in intimate communion with Jesus are the key factors for leaving a godly legacy. While our lives will be pockmarked with points of failure, in Jesus Christ all things are made new. He works all things for our good and the food of those who come after us! To be remembered as forgiven, humble servants is a glorious thing.

It is an incredible time to be a follower of Jesus. We are surrounded by technological advancement and comforts that our ancestors could never have dreamed of. We’re also seeing fracturing in our society and an increase in anxiety and depression. These disordered times are times when God does incredible works of personal and corporate renewal in God’s people. Neighbors is committing to living out a vision of renewal in 2020 for our own souls and for the sake of our society.

Anna and Simeon stand out in the Bible story as two characters whose devotion to God was a life long practice. They each longed for the coming of Messiah and committed themselves to waiting, fasting, praying, and looking forward to His arrival. Their longing was their life and they were pleased in their pursuit. Ultimately, each of them saw their longings met in the birth of Jesus. As we close our Advent series we both look back to the coming of Jesus, and like Anna and Simeon, commit our lives to looking forward with devotion to the second coming of our King.

Around the fifth century, the Japanese developed a form of art called Kintsugi. Literally translated, Kintsugi means “golden repair.” When a piece of pottery falls and breaks, Kintsugi masters carefully piece it back together, mending the fractures with gold. The end result is a vessel ready not only for use again, but the golden scars enhance the beauty of the piece. Jesus came to restore broken souls and mend our shattered world. Advent reminds us of the immense hope of restoration as our mended scars enhance the beauty of His work.

We have desires that are given to us by God and we have desires that are actually against His will due to sin. Between the two poles of deformed desire and holy desire is a spectrum of mixed longings. All of this is often experienced as desperation. God comes to us and works his will in our hearts, and the world, through it all. Advent reminds us that God came to us as a man to satisfy our deepest needs. The arc of our lives is moving towards perfect fulfillment of all desire in Jesus as His Kingdom comes on earth as it is in heaven.

View Details

During Advent we remember that God came to us as a human. Through the history of God’s people we see that God comes to us in all of our circumstances to bring salvation. Hagar was abused and outcast by unjust people. God came to her in her brokenness and restored her hope, dignity, and joy.

Some studies say that one out of five North Americans do not know a Christian. The remedy to this tragedy is a church community committed to building relationships through lavish hospitality. This was Jesus’ missionary practice. As our hearts become more hospitable to the other than our homes will open, creating space for strangers to become family, and even our enemies to become family.

View Details

In our hyper individualistic and aggressively autonomous culture we’ve lost the heart of human relationships as family. Jesus’ church is a recreated family of humans that have been adopted into His kingdom. Through intention, time, and commitment we relearn how to live together in familial ways that point to a future when all humanity will exist in perfect harmony under Jesus’ reign.

Faith is more than an intellectual nod to the existence of God. Faith radically reorients all of our being upon God. There are four dimensions to Biblical faith as exemplified by Abraham: loyalty to God, trusting even when it doesn't make sense, obedience that multiplies righteousness and justice, and looking for God's provision.

God is always listening. God is always present. Prayer is more than folding our hands and closing our eyes while we cover a list of needs. It's not less than this, but it is so much more. Neighbors Church desires to constantly attune to God's presence as an act of unceasing prayer. Through devotion and discipline, we will grow in ever-increasing measure to pray as Jesus prayed.

View Details

Why would 21st-century urbanites form their lives around an ancient text like the Bible? The answer is because Jesus did. As apprentices of Jesus, we know Him through the Bible, we become like Him as the stories that shaped Him shape us, and we do what He did as we obey the Bible that He obeyed.

View Details

God's intention for humanity is that all relationships exist in perfect harmony, something the Hebrews called shalom. How do we achieve this? What are the most important things we should emphasize? Jesus said the whole of God's will was accomplished in loving Him and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

View Details

God the Holy Spirit is being poured out on any human that surrenders to Jesus as King. He empowers surrendered people and unites all groups under the reign of Jesus. The Spirit enables us to speak the languages of the other, that all humanity might become one in the Kingdom of God.

When Jesus of Nazareth launched the church planting movement that would change the face of history and humanity forever He gave some very specific instructions to those first apprentices, "Wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit." Join with us in prayer as we wait on, pray for, and obey the Holy Spirit in thought, word, and deed.

Our souls are malleable, that is to say, we are shaped and formed by what we believe and do. The practice of stopping work, resting, delighting in, and contemplating God once a week--Sabbath-keeping--has been given to humans as a gift for our flourishing. Sabbath restores us and reminds us that we were created for intimate union with God.

To develop heart postures of simplicity and stillness in our frenetic culture we must withdraw into silence and solitude. In quiet contemplation, we become more aware of who we are, and how God loves us. Commitment to the bodily practices of silence and solitude creates a community of humans who know and experience themselves as loved by God, out of which, they love their neighbor.

View Details

In a culture burdened with anxiety and incessantly distracted, Neighbors values stillness as a means of slowing down and attuning to God's presence and love. From stillness, we move into the world aligned with God's kingdom activity for the sake of our souls, and the world.
