EXPERIENCE THE WEST – This phrase means something different to everyone. Thoughts of cowboys, mountains, desert and the American ranching experience. How does one experience the west without traveling? How can you get the true feel of the American cowboy when you can’t be there with them. One way is through the eyes of Tim Cox. Tim paints what he knows; cowponies covered in sweat after a hard day, a cutting horse intent on holding that cow, ranch horses sharing a well-earned drink at a glistening water trough. His cattle have authentic expressions; calves perhaps a little bewildered at a branding, a longhorn steer intent on leaving the country, or a herd just shuffling along - being driven to better pastures. Ranchers, cutters, team ropers, or cowhands, all of them touch Tim’s heart. Add a striking landscape with clear blue skies; wispy pink clouds or spectacular thunderheads and you have a Tim Cox painting.
On this episode I have the privilege of visiting the artist Tim Cox as well as his wife Suzie, his long time supporter and business partner.
Tim Cox is one of America’s best known western artists and if you don’t know his work then you will be pleasantly surprised to discover it. Tim’s authenticity and inspiring vision of the American west has not come quickly or easily. Tim, along with his wife Suzie have paid their dues. Hard work, long days and isolated cow camps are things they know very well. However, the hard work and endless nights of painting until dawn are finally paying off. He is one of the best known western artists, having been voted into the U. S. Art Magazine¹s Print Hall of Fame in 2000. Dozens of his Limited Edition Prints have sold out through the years, some as quickly as 3 weeks. Sales of his popular calendar line, which started in 1986, are nearing 10 million. One of the best compliments paid to his calendars is that you often see his tear off style calendars complete, late in the year. People will lift the pages rather than tear them off. Tim's paintings have appeared on over 300 magazine covers through the years, and he has been featured in articles of at least 16 different publications.
Tim is a fourth generation Arizonan, born and raised in the ranching lifestyle. He now resides outside of Bloomfield, New Mexico, where he continues to raise a few cattle and train horses with his family.

My guest on this episode, Dr. Matt Wagner, is someone who I know enjoys the outdoors as much as I do.
Dr. Wagner is the definitive expert on wildlife conservation, range land management, and the Texas laws and policies governing them. I could invite him on every episode of this show and I know that I’d never grow tired of hearing what he has to say.
Dr. Wagner spent 28 years with the Wildlife Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, most recently as Deputy Director. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Biology Department at Texas State University, where he teaches Wildlife Law and Policy. He also works under contract as a project administer with the Wildlife Management Institute, which has supported game management, biological diversity, and ecology since its founding in 1911.
As if that is not enough, Dr. Wagner has extensive experience working with and advising private landowners such as me. And Dr. Wagner is a believer in the important role that privately owned land plays in the well-being of wildlife and wildlife habitat.

With Dean’s help, I launched RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS earlier this year, and I’m pleased that Dean continues to work with me to build our RANCHCAST audience and ensure the quality of our episodes.

While my expertise is in ranching, farming, and rural real estate, Dean is an expert on small business, reputation management, and effective communication. Together we explore with Michele both the business and the nutrition aspects of ranching and farming, and debunk some of the most common food myths.

Paul Francis is best known as the inventor of a technology that allows orbiting astronauts on the International Space Station to stay fit in the weightless environment. His resistive exercise device has been used by more than 50 space travelers.
Ranch land prices should continue to rise in 2017, although not as rapidly as they did in the robust years of 2014 and 2015.
That is the assessment of one of the nation’s leading ranch economists, Dr. Charles E. Gilliland, who recently shared his full analysis with Lem Lewis, host of the RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS podcast.
Dr. Gilliland is a professor in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University and a research economist – specializing in rural land and property taxes – at the university’s Real Estate Center. Lem Lewis, well-known as “The Ranch Broker,” is a fourth-generation Texas rancher whose full-service brokerage company serves both land buyers and sellers, concentrating on the Texas Hill Country, South Texas, and West Texas.
More than oil prices and interest rates, Dr. Gilliland explains in his interview with RANCHCAST that ranch land values in Texas are tied to population, job, and wage growth.Â
