OPENING

Admitting when you are wrong is probably one of the hardest things to do.

This is not just a reality for those of who us desire that day after day we would be more and more submitted to Jesus Christ as the Master of our lives as well as the Savior of our lives. Even the most non-religious psychologists and sociologist agree that admitting “I am wrong” is difficult to do because of something they call “Cognitive dissonance.” As one Pschologists was quoted saying in a New York Times article entitled, “Why it’s so hard to admit you’re wrong”…

“Cognitive dissonance is what we feel when the self-concept — I’m smart, I’m kind, I’m convinced this belief is true — is threatened by evidence that we did something that wasn’t smart, that we did something that hurt another person, that the belief isn’t true...”

With that said, I do want to let you know that today we are going to talk about what it means to lean into repentance — into the uncomfortable space of admitting “I am wrong.” I want to encourage you to not write off what we are going to be talking about. Whether you believe everything you have heard about Jesus and the bible, today is so important because what we are talking about has the power to heal our hearts and bring peace to our souls. And if you are someone who considers yourself a Christian, then what we are going to be talking about is a non-negotiable discipline in the life of every person who was, is, and will be a follower of Jesus.

INTRO

Before we jump into the message part, I do want to say good morning and welcome to our gathering here at Edinbrook Elementary. If we’ve never met, my name is Phil and I have the wonderful privilege of being the pastor of this local community of followers of Christ that calls themselves Clarity Church.

At this time, I want to invite you to grab a copy of the notes that you can find inside of the program you were handed when you came in this morning. On that insert you can find space to take notes and follow along as we go through the message. Also, I want to invite you to open up whatever copy of the bible is most convenient to you, whether it’s an app on your phone or a paper copy that you can find in in the back of a seat near you. Our main passage of scripture today comes from Psalm 51.

While you are turning there…If today is your first time with us or first time in a while, last week we began a new series entitled “The Heart Matters”.

And while this series is not an exact representation of the observation of the season known as lent as more liturgical churches would observe it, in the same “spirit” we want to take a journey together that forces us to take inventory in our own lives. The goal is to take the next several weeks leading up to Easter Sunday to aside some time to … take a solemn look at our sin, our need for repentance, to take a solemn look at price paid for our redemption through the death of Jesus.

So while this series may feel overly serious — asking you to contemplate and come to grips with things that this modern culture of “positive-affirmation” would say is an unhealthy approach towards “self-health” or “self-care” — we must remember that Jesus taught that the kingdom of heaven belongs to the “poor in spirit”

M atthew 5:3 CSB

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

To be poor in spirit is to have the courage to confess our sins, and the bravery to believe that without God we are without hope and we are in desperate need of him.

TRANSITION

Last week we talked about the importance of humility. Today I want us to talk about one of the main things that humility before God requires — which is leaning into repentance.

Before we read Psalm 51, here’s a little backstory… In 2 Samuel 11-12 we find the David — the David from the “David and Goliath Story” — and he is now the king. At the height of his power we find David deciding to stay home instead of leading his armies into battle. As once commentator put it…

“The Narrator…leaves the impression that every able-bodied man in Isreal goes to war — everyone, that is, except the king himself…Indeed, leading his troops into battle was expected to be the major external activity of an ancient Near Easter ruler. Although therefore reprehensible in itself, David’s conduct on this occasion opens the way for royal behavior that is more despicable still,”

What is that despicable behavior? To make a long story short, David abuses his power as king to satisfy his desires for adultery and gets another man’s wife —Bathsehba — pregnant. To make matters worse, he engages in a coverup so atrocious that would even make the most God-less person cry, “Foul!” In the end, he has Bathsheba’s husband killed so that it would look like David was a benevolent King who took in a widow rather than the adulterous murderer he was. Unfortunately for David, what he did in secret, God revealed to a man named Nathan — a prophet of God and a trusted advisor to David. And God sent Nathan to David to confront him of his sin and what we read in Psalm 51 is a song David wrote in response to the confrontation of his sin.

Martin Luther referred to Psalm 51 as “The Psalm of Repentance” Another bible scholar and commentator writes that…“The lament form of the psalm suitably fits the spirit of contrition and prayer for restoration. Gone are the questions. What remains is a soul deeply aware of sin, of having offended God, and of its desperate need of God’s grace.”

TEXT

Here’s what David wrote…

Psalm 51:1 CSB

[1] Be gracious to me, God, according to your faithful love; according to your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.

Last week, one of the main points from our time in Isaiah 6 was that If I want to embrace humility I have to see clearly that God is great, and I am not. So here. David acknowledges how great God is and all that he has done. He recognizes that God is gracious, compassionate and that his love never fails, proclaiming what the Lord said about himself when he declared early in the narrative of the bible to Moses at the burning bush who he was. (Exodus 34:6-7)

Psalm 51:2-5 CSB

[2] Completely wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. [3] For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me. [4] Against you—you alone— I have sinned and done this evil in your sight. So you are right when you pass sentence; you are blameless when you judge. [5] Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

David is making a blatant admission of sin. He does not try to explain it away or cushion the blow of its severity with excuses. He says, “I know I did it. I recognize that what I did was against your standards. It’s not just a mistake. What I did was a sin. What I did WAS EVIL! In fact I have been a sinner since birth!”

David just doesn’t stop there. Look at what he says next

Psalm 51:6-12 CSB

[6] Surely you desire integrity in the inner self, and you teach me wisdom deep within. [7] Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. [8] Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. [9] Turn your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.

[10] God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. [11] Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. [12] Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.

Recap…David acknowledges how great God is and all he has done and then he opens up to God about his sin with transparency and humility. And then after doing that he recognizes that God is the solution to his sinful heart and asks for God forgiveness.

He doesn’t just stop at forgiveness. He wants to be changed. He asks for a clean heart. He asks that God would renew his spirit.

Most importantly, he asks for God’s presence to remain with him. He understood what Jesus taught when He said.

Matthew 7:22-23 CSB

[22] On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’ [23] Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers! ’

In other words, what David knew and what Jesus taught was that you could do all the right things and still be guilty of being a lawbreaker if you do not have a relationship with God.

Let’s look at how David finishes this song of repentance and then let’s get to how I hope we can engage in this text practically and tangibly this morning before we leave here.

Psalm 51:13-19 CSB

[13] Then I will teach the rebellious your ways, and sinners will return to you. [14] Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God— God of my salvation— and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. [15] Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. [16] You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; you are not pleased with a burnt offering. [17] The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. You will not despise a broken and humbled heart, God. [18] In your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem. [19] Then you will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

RESPONSE

You have heard me say this before, but I’ll say it again because it is a reminder of why what David writes here is so important — that God uses a transformed people to transform the world.

David communicates this idea that God will use him to help others who have also been guilty of breaking God’s law find their way to God.

David also recognizes that — at the end of the day — what God really wants from us if a broken and humble heart before God.

And so before we go today, I want to create some space for all of us who confess Jesus Christ as Lord to do what we have just read — to lean into repentance. In just a few moments I am going to ask our production team to play some music we’ve prepared ahead of time very quietly and I want us all to take some time to be honest about our sin.

This is so important and I don’t want anyone to miss what this opportunity can mean just because it may feel a little awkward. I don’t want us to just read about repentance today. I want us to actually take time for repentance. As James the brother of Jesus said…

James 1:22-25 NLT

[22] But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. [23] For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. [24] You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. [25] But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

What I want to do is use Psalm 51 as a guideline for repentance. Just so we’re clear…I am not saying that this is the ONLY way to repent, but this is definitely a way we can turn from our sin and turn to God. So here’s what we are going to do. We’re going to take 2 minutes to do the following First, we will start by acknowledging how great God is and all that he has done. This aligning your heart with the reality of the attributes of God, and the way God has demonstrated his goodness and mercy to you in the past. Second, I’ll ask you — like David did —to admit your need for God by admitting that you are a sinner and confessing your sin to God. Don’t rush this. You can’t turn away from what you are not aware of. Don’t try to hide your sin like David did. Once you’ve confessed the sin in your life, then ask for forgiveness, a clean heart, and renewed Spirit.

Then take time to Worship God in thankfulness for his grace, and in advance for the work he is doing in and through you to make you live life more like Jesus.

So let’s just do that right now. I’ll keep the time and I’ll let you know when we’re done. Just concentrate on making the most of this opportunity to repent before the Lord right now.

PAUSE for prayer (2 Minutes) START MUSIC

Thanks for doing that with me. I want to encourage you as you go from here today and into this next week that you would take at least 2 minutes like we did right now to either do what we did, or at a minimum use this prayer as a guideline for engaging your heart in humility.

Would you stand with me as we close in prayer? PRAYER Before you leave here today, I just want to remind all of those who call clarity home that as part of our regular rhythms of our gathering, one of the things we do is we work together to pack things up, so before you leave today, would you take whatever time you are able to give so that we can be out of here in timely manner? Thanks in advance. God bless you and I look forward to worshiping the Lord again with you soon!
