There's recess every Thursday. Tuesdays provide healthy snacks. Creative themed projects highlight the company's goals. Leadership teams work toward greater productivity and safety. There's no stopping her efforts to improve her own life and her beloved workplace.
While leaving his formal role as pastor, Lee Levengood, owner of Everything Printing, finds opportunities to provide care and support to his family, employees, clients, and the business and non-profit community.
Jody Dolansky, real estate agent with Zuber Realty, has another dream: expressing her life's experiences in song. Her band Steel Hemlock is making itself known in the area. Her poetry, transformed in her songs' lyrics, relay life's challenges as she's met them.

Commenting on his own efforts in the establishment of the Boyertown Sports Center and the Boyertown YMCA building, he acknowledges the many other community members who led their expertise toward the success of the projects. And there's special pride in the practice he's built and the care he's provided a lifetime of patients.
Career vet, Corey Mason is a man of many passions and, now retired from his military service, is intent on pursuing as many hobbies as he possibly can: video production, spirit investigation, metal detecting, inventing mocktails and supporting spaces where folks can hang out together without numbing out with alcohol. His journey includes some tough challenges, but he's out on top!
Team Asylum coordinator Randy Renninger reports that Boyertown's first Pokémon Tournament was a win all around. Over 100 players and observers attended; celebrity players came from New York, Philadelphia, and Tennessee; vendors enjoyed sales and opportunities to meet players; families bonded during shared play. Tina Hartman shares that she's realized a dream-come-true in opening Boyertown's latest food venue offering creative choices of salads, paninis, soups, and wraps along with the choice to order your own combination of ingredients. A former home health care professional, eager to please, Tina enjoys mixing with patrons and staff, listening carefully to ideas for changing up the menu as seasons change and to meet culinary tastes of the area.
So many animals, so many places to visit and re-visit--camera in hand: Jeff Grabert can't get enough. Thousands of images from which to choose to print and frame and exhibit--locally and around the world. Africa on safari is his favorite location--closest to nature.
John Hanna recounts his journey from teen dishwasher in urban Atlanta, Georgia, to culinary chef creating Ironstone Restaurant's unique farm-to-table offerings in rural Boyertown, Pennsylvania. John shares challenges inherent in the demanding lifestyle of running a restaurant along with the rewards of pleasing diners experiencing offerings sourced locally but new to their palate.
Artisan Minna Aaparyti has memories of walks through the woods to get to and from school in Finland. Her art in many mediums showcases her long-held love of nature. Susan Grabert's home is rich with art in many mediums--her own, her photographer husband's, paintings and sculptures from local artists and from artists and fine crafts people from all over the world. Her artistic journey is rich in experiences and challenges whether creating a painting-a-day for 30 days or moving from hyper-realistic still lifes to paintings of African wildlife hidden in patterns.
Robyn Burckhardt's friends want to spend time with her in her studio--creating, venting, relaxing--for they know that any time spent with Robyn will be full of energy and joy. She'll splash paint on your blank canvas, as needed, to get you started. And from there, anything goes. It's just so much fun. And healing, too.
Ashley had no idea following her high school graduation what she wanted to do with her life. She just knew she wanted to be creative. Beauty school followed; but in discovering a horse trailer she could transform into a business creating unique beverages for weddings and special events she recognized her "calling."
Jules Hull, familiar to many as an accomplished plumber, emerges as author in his memoir Blessings Afforded a Common Man, offering his experiences throughout his life allowing him to see God's presence and "direction" in his life. Several days before he passed, Charles Haddad called to say he was willing to record a "B Inspired" podcast with me and Pastor Bob Machamer. In a wide-ranging conversation, Bob Machamer, pastor serving Charles' beloved St. John's Lutheran Church in Boyertown, shares his understanding of Charles' as community leader, role model, and personal friend. Pastor Bob illuminates Charles' vision of the community's future, his earnest hopes that young leaders would emerge to further the mission he had spent his life supporting: nothing less than the unconditional acceptance of all members of the community working together to improve its infrastructure, maintain quality education, and strengthen its support of the arts, history, and cultural opportunities. Bill Cherkasky got "hooked" while touring the high school's "old building" before its latest renovations that would remove all the old wood found in its classroom doors and the framing of the classrooms' slate blackboards. Eager to preserve as much as he could, Bill created projects--video projects and visual art ones--raised funding to sponsor the projects, and found new "homes" for items of value to avoid landfills.
This “B Inspired” episode, recorded over a year ago is full of the “feels" and will warm your heart during winter's chill! Their lives have changed somewhat, but you’ll be inspired to learn of their unique business that had to be abandoned “Wayward Whiskers Art Studios,” featuring custom art and jewelry. "TyDrops Forever Memories” offers unique memorials containing the ashes of loved ones suspended in glass. You’ll want to read Tyrone’s blog that has inspired thousands of people. Jake McCoach taught me more about the world of video gaming--about assisting emerging players to find sponsors, about creating tournaments that provide gamers a place to play and meet others--all things about a world that is foreign to me but highly lucrative to talented players in today's world.
Melanie has never met a challenge she couldn't outperform. Her childhood dream as captain of her twirling team provided Melanie with the leadership skills, commitment, and drive to fill challenging roles within her community as teacher and executive director of the YMCA and continue to climb the corporate ladder of responsibility with the YMCA organization all while making sure her family's needs were met.
Captain Jim Boyer has served for 38 years in the business of helping those in distress--sometimes saving lives. He offers insight into his role with the Boyertown Ambulance as an EMT and Paramedic highlighting the unique ways the job is more than a job; it's a mission in bettering the community.
Amy Muzopappa's photo on Facebook that showcased a stance during her First Place routine demonstrating Forms in a Bucks County Marital Arts Tournament inspired this episode. After turning 50, Amy decided she was going to follow the advice from Shawshank Redemption to "get busy living" in her "fight" with an autoimmune condition. She signed up to learn martial arts, and she decided to be more open about "fighting" to live despite her condition. (The episode was recorded for the podcast Both Sides Now co-hosted by Ross (Yergz) Yerger and Jane.
I had to "surprise" Lesley Misko during one of The Boyertown Area Expression's executive committee meetings--a.k.a. one of our "gab" sessions over lunch--by quickly pushing the "record" button before she could object. She's been shyly, slyly avoiding being the subject of a "B Inspired" conversation. But, we did it and had a good time exploring the mission and intent of our project, thanking our contributors, and encouraging more expression from the community!

In case you missed it, we're offering this episode about mural artist Chris B. Murray as an encore presentation. In under three weeks, mural artist Chris spray painted his colorful and whimsical design "A Better Bear" onto the west side of Boyertown, PA's Rita’s Water Ice building. Chris never made a "Plan B," so making a living for himself and his family as an artist--his "Plan A"--is a most satisfying accomplishment. There was never a doubt in his own mind and those of his parents and teachers that his talents would bring him success--after some difficult, lean years.

Mary Anne Abdo's start as a writer began as an eighth grade student assigned to write about her "roots." In discovering the hardships of her ancestors, her journey to assist today's women in struggles through domestic violence, abandonment, and homelessness has culminated in her first book of poetry titled "Fractured Lollipop."

Marky Barto comes to us from the Czech Republic, bringing the centuries-old classical painting style to Berks County as apprentice to her instructor, fine artist Eric Armusik. She recounts her artistic journey-- influences from her childhood, education, career paths, and serendipitous encounters--that landed her in the U.S. following her love of art as an emerging and award-winning artist with her first solo exhibit at Arts Plus Gallery in West Reading through November 2023.

While Barby Bonnett knew that creating art was her destiny and that Moore College of Art would prepare her, she wasn't sure if she would be able to make a living at it. Where she found her art was in creating pastry that is not only mouth watering but also visually delightful.
And while she knew early on that animals needed protection, not as part of her diet, she didn't know that her love of animals would feature in the pastry she created and would inspire her to paint those endangered animals that needed her help.
Barby's award-winning work is colorful and layered, a technique resulting from her work in pastels.
Main Street Manager Ellen Martignetti and Events Planner Krista Gross reflect on Building a Better Boyertown's 2023 Oktoberfest and upcoming events, plans, and vision for future events and initiatives.
Pastor Dave Bitler of St. John Hill asks, “Does Your Tattoo Have a Story?” And then he listens carefully to folks eager to tell the secrets of their soul. “Stories are important,” he offers; “it’s where lives intersect with Jesus. And that’s the point of evangelism—giving meaning to communion.” Approaching people who are often shunned because of their body art has changed Dave's ministry--from "telling" to listening. His own story features unscripted paths from a dream of becoming a music teacher to a degree in business and computer and employment as an IT guy developing internet systems for companies to (finally, his friends tell him) entering the seminary. And an out-of-the-blue phone call inviting him to join a fellow pastor to hunt tattoo stories has led to his unique form of evangelism.
In our third "B Inspired" episode, Joe shares the multiple meanings behind his art as expression as man's necessity for survival and especially his current series that contains elements from cave art and native cultures. Always a fascinating interview, Joe's knowledge of spiritual matters that comes largely from his wide reading and life experiences--first as a cult member and then as a deprogrammer--is mind-opening. An award-winner in Studio B's "What Inspires YOU?" exhibit, he articulates the many inspirations behind his work.
Frank Morgan recalls the long hours over 5 years he spent committed to building his new business, caring for his twin daughters, and serving the people and organizations within the Boyertown Area School District. He offers tips and advice for entrepreneurs and some insights about the mission and events of Berks-Mont Business Association, an organization he was happy to lead during its re-invention.
This episode introduces “Working Together,” a Therapeutic Community Rehabilitation Project, on the 120-acre grounds of the former Fellowship Farm, with a mission to help homeless, addicted, or incarcerated individuals—many who have often been physically, mentally, and sexually abused—but desire for a “hand up, not a hand-out.” The conversation centers around founding father and executive director Ted Edwards—businessman, seminarian, and marriage and family therapist—and Isaac A—staff member, whose life and experiences mirror those of the 65 “students” who will be invited into the two-year program beginning December 2023, involving therapeutic opportunities and the development of work-related, life, and relationship skills. This 501(c)3 non-profit offers a second chance to those whose early lives gave them little chance for a productive life.
“B Inspired” enjoyed its annual conversation with poet John Yamrus, considered to be a master of minimalism and the neo-noir in modern poetry. Poetry demands few words; and in few words John’s poems shine a light on the tiny moments that people ignore until they’re gone.
Our conversation included an update: his latest book Twenty-four Poems is available on Amazon. He shared that he’s celebrating the second book of his workpublished in translation—Albanian, Romanian, and three other languages in a “cool hardcover edition with a ribbon down the center.”
We talked books that touched his soul, and his own process-- doing one thing every day—writing a poem—letting his heart lead—submitting something for publication, promoting his work—any one thing to forward his work.
“Not afraid to fail” is how John would like us to remember him. And his willingness to show us the good, the bad, the ugly of life as he sees it, invites us not to miss paying attention to those moments in our own. His poetry sticks around in my mind and encourages me to see.

The “B Inspired” podcast features fellow retired educator, BASH graduate, Class of ’87, John Owen Davis who looks forward to a new career where he’ll use the people skills he honed as band director intent on building within his classroom a culture of “unrelenting kindness” where his students knew that, above all, he wanted them to be good people. John’s “been around” throughout his career—Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Florida, and Australia—and made some impressively decisive moves to avoid feeling suffocated by others’ expectations, to follow his heart as a gay man, or, more recently, to feel safe from Florida’s governor and unruly students. While some decisions were questioned by family and friends, he regrets none. In sharing the motivations for his many moves, he reveals the bedrock of his character—uncommon confidence, the importance of family and a sense of community, and a selflessness that he took from the Boyertown community, his parents, and teachers.
Yergz's resumé makes my head spin. Retired after 21 years as a Secret Service agent, Ross Yerger reviews his journey in this extra-long episode that took him out of small-town life into the big leagues in sports and protection services before "coming out" that has led him back into journalism. Finding his way "Up The Middle" in his podcast, Ross is eager to share his experiences and concerns for the future of the country he served for decades with passion and invites us to join him on Yergz.com. Studio B's 2023 juror Susan LeClaire named Phil Repko's poems as "Best in Show" in Studio B's 10th anthology of poetry, prose, and art "Legacy: Remembrance Matters." Again. And so, award-winner that he is, while "B Inspired" has enjoyed conversation with Phil previously, because Phil was The Teacher of poetry I wanted my own children to experience, I knew my audience would enjoy listening to and learning from this prolific writer whose reflections on the legacies we leave or hope to leave will certainly touch your hearts. Phil shares this year's submissions and a plus one, his writer's journey, thoughts on his process, and his plans for publication of a few of probably over 500 poems he has written over a span of over 40 years.
Laura shares her journey from small-town Boyertown to New York to Hollywood, from her high school goal as environmental scientist to costume designer for theatre and film. Our conversation allowed a peek into her life of traveling the world researching and gathering the people and knowledge needed to outfit actors authentically for their roles.

Catching up with Mindy, BASH Class of '98--one of those students a teacher never forgets--I found her on a course to a new career as elementary school teacher. Learning the personal and family challenges she's met and managed, undaunted, since high school--especially those parenting challenges as a single mom of a neurodiverse son--I learned the core belief that has made her an uncommon mom and will make her a super educator.
Speech and language therapist Kristin Park brings The Magic Speech Bus wherever children need her services. Kristin’s goal of establishing a private practice as speech therapist has found its home in her Magic Speech bus that is cheerfully and whimsically decorated in primary colors, featuring rainbows and stars. The beauty of her mobile office is not just in its looks, however. A sign inside the bus lists the ways Kristin’s services promise to enhance the lives of her clients by building confidence through education and practice to give them the power to speak for themselves, to advocate for themselves—to assure them that what they have to say matters.
We Are (again...part of) the World! Again! Boyertown, PA, joins the "Before I Die" global project of over 5,000 walls in over 70 countries, in over 30 languages. Amy Muzopappa introduced the project from Alaska while on vacation and knew it had to come to Boyertown. It was a perfect fit for Studio B's "Legacy: Remembrance Matters" exhibit featuring visual and literary art and the many efforts of Building a Better Boyertown.
John Martignetti constructed the wall; Andrew Garcia added the chalkboard paint. Amy applied the stencils by Thursday, June 15 at 5:00 pm. and by Friday morning, June 16, 10 a.m. the wall featured its first responses.
Join us at the ribbon cutting on Wednesday, June 21, 5:30 pm. So exciting to be part of this international project begun over 10 years ago!! The mission: finding common ground, creating community cohesiveness--the mission of so many projects featured in this special kind of place: Boyertown, PA. As our beloved former mayor, the late Marianne Deery insisted: none of us is a stranger--just a friend we have not yet met.
"Nevertheless, she persisted" is Gigi Malinchak's motto, one that she has had tattooed on her arm to remind her and inspire others following her stroke and subsequent surgery to remove the injured part of her brain. Yet, it was no surprise to me that this positive, spirited, dynamic pet care professional was determined to return to health and share the challenges she continues to face along with the changes and conditions she's learned to accept.
Ellen Finks spent her career as a classical performing flutist--one that required the utmost precision. No mistakes allowed! In retirement, she took up painting to try something new but not unfamiliar: her mother was an artist. Ellen tried watercolor first but has taken workshops and courses in multiple mediums--"finding her voice," she says. A workshop in "Intuitive Expression" a.k.a. abstract painting --a style she was eager to "understand" --resulted in a painting that won a prize award and gave her affirmation that inspired her to create and exhibit over a dozen works in the abstract style that she finds liberating and joyful--a definitive change in mind from her days of performing classical music. There are no mistakes and no explaining: She just paints over what doesn't work in free-flowing brush strokes of juicy colors inspired by a decade living in Mexico.
Eric Armusik breaks the stereotype often found among artists in his entrepreneurial ability to make a living doing what he loves: making art. Chatting with him briefly before inviting him to record a "B Inspired" episode, I was inspired by the many revenue streams he's created for himself and other emerging artists and by his savvy promotional efforts using social media today that he claims are 50% of the business of art. He teaches painting techniques. He paints on commissioned pieces. He runs an academy with painting apprentices--just like the Old Masters did. And his own current project, creating large-scale paintings illustrating Danté's Inferno, he plans as a legacy endeavor. In asking him to share what he does, what he's learned, and how he has managed to achieve success, I hoped other artists would benefit.
Katarina Illona knows who she is and is not only content but willing to share her experiences in order to provide acknowledgement, encouragement, support, and validation to her children and adult readers. Her book of poetry—entitled Anxious Thoughts from an Awkward Mind—pretty much says it all. Katarina, self-described as OCD, has found writing her reflections about herself in free verse a liberating experience. In understanding herself better, she came to feel good about herself, and is eager to share her experiences in order to provide acknowledgement, encouragement, support, and validation to her readers. Katarina’s children’s book Bedtime Tails: A New Adventure includes a coloring book with her black and white illustrations from the book which follow the adventures of two cats—Daisy and Perkins.

Voters in Boyertown school district’s Region #1 have two, new faces running in the upcoming primary on May 16. Michelle Sweisfort is running for the open 2-year seat; Krista Arndt hopes to secure the 4-year seat. What both Michelle and Krista bring is valuable and unique to the Boyertown School Board. Krista’s experience and network of professionals who provide security in technology and in interpreting the complex language of regulations are areas of concern for today’s schools and ones the current Board has not researched or even considered. Michelle’s work in the insurance arena with budgets and finance in managing risk provide professional abilities in the strategic management of the district’s $139 million budget. Krista and her family follow auto racing; Michelle rescues stray cats. They just met but have become fast friends and pledge to bring strong leadership skills and a dedication to solving problems as positive role models and team players.
Donna Usavage talks about her efforts to support pro-public education candidates for upcoming open seats on the School Board to be decided in the May 16 primary election. Donna voices her concerns about the candidates whom members of the sitting Board support--concerns that motivated her and a group of other volunteers to organize and work to elect pro-public education candidates and maintain BASD’s reputation for offering a quality of education to the district’s students.
Donna spent 10 years serving as a school board director for Boyertown Area School District (BASD). Since her retirement, she has continued her involvement by attending school board meetings, voicing her concerns, and offering information with others.
In the episode, she recalls the recent development of “Boyertown Forward”—the political action committee formed to support the current pro-public school candidates—some details about each of the pro-public education candidates as well as issues presented by their opponents and the groups that support them.

Pennsylvania native Karen (Stein) Lupton, looking to a career as a Biblical scholar, graduated with a degree in vocal performance--the first student to do so at the new music school at Eastern University, but left Yankee territory to marry and raise a family and is now a voice for education reform in Georgia as a freshman member of the House of Representatives. She affirms: Southern Hospitality is real and, since she arrived, there's greater openness to healing the racial divide. She's determined to build relationships among her colleagues and constituents from all sides to make common sense decisions that benefit the welfare of all those she represents. The Bear Fever project is fortunate to have long-time contact Brieanne Hauger handling orders for bears at Cowpainters, LLC. Brieanne—who joined Cowpainters in 2007—several years after our launch—purchased the company in 2018—and facilitates orders, designs and sculpts custom additions to the bears, and handles delivery of the sculptures to the artists in the Boyertown area.I was excited recently to record a “B Inspired” podcast episode with Brieanne to learn a bit more about the company and the process involved in our project from its beginning. Bear Fever seemingly can’t be cured, and our community seems to be quite satisfied that this fever remains contagious!

Learning about the history of Martin Stone Quarry and its president Rod Martin preceded an inspiring tour of the Martin Stone Quarry that provoked admiration for the size and scope of the 70-year-old operation and an eye-opening peek below earth’s surface. Martin Stone Quarry’s president Rod treated me to a ride and an introduction to the 350-acre quarry in which thousands of tons of quartz and granite are mined for use in a multitude of projects from road construction to ballparks and sandboxes. We rode to the top of the quarry and descended over 400 feet to its bottom as Rod pointed out the layers of earth—grass to granite—that are removed in the mining process.

As a high school student, Class of 1996, New York-based architectural and landscape photographer Jade Doskow enjoyed afternoons buried in the novels of Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky with plans to major in Russian literature preparing her for the life of a literary scholar. Instead, curtailed by a bad accident from her job as bike courier, she began a series of photographic self-portraits that led to a project that replicated the novelist’s tone and vision of the world in images that are often dark and haunting--described as “eerily poetic” as they capture moments where people, architecture, nature, and time come together in a moment—and then move on.
Denise Pulgino Stout, director of the Boyertown Area Community Library, didn’t plan to become a librarian; her dream was to become an actor—the next Carol Burnett, actually. Her college degree is in theatre arts. The acting skills she acquired led her to a job as a paraprofessional bringing activities like storytelling to children’s pre-schools. She grew to love the idea of becoming a librarian, eventually earned her Master’s degree in Library Science after a hiatus to conquer a serious illness, and accepted the executive director’s position in Boyertown in August 2022. She describes renovations and goals coming in the library’s future, expresses her gratitude for the supportive library team and board members, and shares some of latest activities and programs offered at Boyertown Community Library.

Destined to be a painter, Ted Hallman became instead a textile artist, quite famous and has been for decades, recognized as one of North America's foremost textile artists who has influenced the direction of contemporary fibre reflecting the breadth of his experience, the inventive nature of his work, and his willingness to take risks. Spiritual, reflective, introspective, his work is a journey of self-revelation and self-realization. He's had work featured in a one-person exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with eight pieces in their permanent collection. His work is housed in 22 museums world-wide. Examples include the National Gallery in Victoria, Australia, the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Queen Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and he was inspired to create for the international exhibition in London in the 1960's.
Chatting with Erica Vinskie about creating her perfumes from native wildflowers--"foraged fragrances--was one of my favorite episodes. Erica shares her early goal of becoming an art therapist but in college turned to studio painting only to realize she valued spending time with people. And so "painting with fragrances" has become her lifetime pursuit. Her business "Henny Faire" features a line of fragrances along with a selection of soaps, books, and gifts from near and far away places. We hope Erica finds a home location in Boyertown to serve others by bringing them beauty, comfort, and joy that she found in the art world. Jamie and Jeff Cascino explain the "Extra 'C'" in the Cascino name stands for "caring, community, commitment: and comes from a deep gratitude for the blessings life has given them. Their home--the former home of the beloved Mary Lou and Charles Haddad--to them is a home to be enjoyed by the community. Often the place for parties and gatherings, it is also the spot for the Cascino's annual "Wishing Tree" on which children and adults write their wishes on ornaments to be placed on the tree. It's a lovely tradition...warms the heart on December's coldest days...as the wishes are tiny prayers for hope and love.

Linda Anthony of Boyertown was bothered for years by the spirits who lived in her home. Annoyed and frightened at times, she shares her experiences and when one frightened her, she reached out to a priest, a medium, and the Paranormal Spirit Seekers to make the spirits go away. Yet today she calls out to those spirits hoping they return. She misses them. Who’d have thought.
Since 2013, as his mission to help people, Jim Smith, organizer of a 12-member team known as the Paranormal Spirit Finders, has logged in almost 100 free home visits to trigger spirits to appear and to document and record proof of the existence of spirits living in the house along with the owners. Their mission is to identify the spirits, not rid a home of their presence--nor do they try to convince anyone that spirits exist. Donnie Ellixson, owner and martial arts instructor of Ellixson's Tae Kwon Do Academy, loved all things Asian involving martial arts as a young teen. Maggie Farrell and Jason Hoch--partners in business and life--left host Jane Stahl breathless. Their retail shop offers "gotta-have-it" basketry items, textiles, and more--items found during their travels, purchased wholesale, and/or handmade. Jason serves as president of Building a Better Boyertown (BaBB), the non-profit organization sponsored by the PA Downtown Main Street program dedicated to rejuvenating small towns, bringing an outsider's vision, youthful energy, and fresh ideas. Maggie happily coordinates Building a Better Boyertown's bi-weekly Evening (Farm) Market in her quest for having fun and building local friendships. On alternate weeks she invites friends and folks she's met through their rental business and through networking on social media to bi-weekly craft sessions around the table that Jason made. Shared among all: "Folks are just like me," "Let's do this again," and "Life's challenges are growth-producing opportunities; listening to them inspires compassion and a determination not to judge."

In this episode--the 4th in a series exploring the value of books often found on lists of books to be banned from public school libraries and curriculum--Craig Bennett, Bob Wood, and host Jane Stahl offer insight into what folks have found disturbing and the value of a few books that made them think and question life as they knew it: John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, the Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and dystopian novels George Orwell's 1984, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Lis Lowry's The Giver, and Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time are among those discussed.
So much to love about Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Personal courage. Super communication skills. Awesome parenting. Justice and injustice in 1930's Alabama and, unfortunately, even today. The novel speaks to all ages. There's good and bad in all of us: the novel showcases both.
It's a tough one--no doubt. William Golding's view of humanity is disturbing. But "It's real," insists Bob Wood. "It makes you think," claims Craig Bennett--both former teachers of literature who joined Jane in the second of the series finding value in books that are often on lists of books to be banned from public school libraries and curriculum. Great literature presents situations to inspire us, and sometimes the inspiration comes from what we fear. The Lord of the Flies is one of those. Next week "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Just Say NO! to banning JD Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye! In this episode of “B Inspired,”Craig Bennett, writer, teacher, actor and Jane spent some time together discussing the reasons that Salinger’s iconic novel is often at the top of the list of books to be banned by public school libraries and curriculum. Truth: “Many, many men”—then, now, and always—"are troubled morally and spiritually” just as the novel’s character Holden Caulfield is as an unhappy adolescent. Susan LeClair, former English teacher and one of Jane's favorite lunch dates, served as juror for the prize awards for Studio B's 9th book of poetry, prose, and art: "Transforming Moments: Finding Our Voice." In this episode Susan shares some of the considerations that informed her decisions. Then, in an update about the Human Library program, schedule for August 7, 2002, Jane shared that the response to her invitations to participate have been received enthusiastically. Participants will share their experiences living with "Depression," "ADHD" "Cults," "Autism," "Adoption," for example. In addition, on July 10, 17, 24, and 31, Jane invites folks to the studio with a book in hand--a book that is often banned from public school libraries and curriculum. Lessening prejudice, stereotyping, stigma, fears, and concerns about people and books is the mission of the summer programs.
Monique Becker planned to become a professional ballerina. Her college degree led her into the medical field creating wellness programs. Then her worlds collided in recognizing an early love nurtured by the sewing skills her mother taught her and fueled by losing her to cancer. Taking a risk, Monique returned to needle and thread and to a full range of classes that inspired Becker Home, "a space where meaning, self-care, and joy" bring "beauty, functionality, recurring peace, and physical wellness" to her clients. Her life's transformation inspires the work she does to transform ours!

I love knowing that Bridget Scogna fell in love with the tin ceiling of her space at 30 E Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, and felt called to open “Bridget’s Place for Making Memories” at that very location. “Bridget’s Place” is a gift shop offering the creations of local artisans that brings people together to make memories through craft parties and social gatherings. Birthday parties, bridal showers, anniversary parties, weddings, Girls’ or Guys’ Nights Out—any themed opportunities to gather together and have fun—is what Bridget’s Place will provide. On a drive through Boyertown, Colonel Keith Seiwell, USMC looked for a museum dedicated to one of World War II's heroes, General Carl Spaatz, that he was certain existed in the General's hometown. When he realized one did not exist, he was determined to create one to honor General Spaatz and all those from is hometown that served. In an extraordinary effort over 2 years while a pandemic shut down much of the world, Colonel Seiwell and fewer than 2 dozen volunteers have created a museum--and an experience--inviting visitors to participate as a pilot, a casualty, and a POW. The Colonel shares his own history dedicated to military service, his experiences in creating the museum, the talented volunteers and their outstanding contributions, and his vision for the museum's future.

For over 50 years, Margaret has been the "go to" researcher, historian and popular teacher for projects that celebrate and preserve the history of her beloved hometown. Writing for a Walking Tour of Boyertown, the community's celebration of its sesquicentennial, the local Lutheran church's anniversary, a pictorial history book of Boyertown, the one-day-at-a-time social history featuring vignettes of 19th century Boyertown, and her current passion: the General Carl Spaatz National USAAF Museum, Margaret brings the community's history and its remarkable people to life. Dr. John Crosby, Boyertown Area School District's superintendent in the early 1990's, retired from a long career as superintendent of schools and embraced a challenge from a successful entrepreneur to create the Uncommon Individual Foundation, the first nonprofit private foundation dedicated to developing mentoring programs and opportunities. In this episode Jane and Dr. Crosby share stories of their mentors including details from the life of John's own mentor Richard Caruso found in his book Built to Help Each Other.
The Uncommon Individual Foundation (UIF) serves businesses, schools, nonprofits, and other organizations dedicated to "unlock[ing] human potential and individual growth, paving the way to meaningful and productive lives." First: an apology. I had hoped to bring listeners my conversation with Richard Guy, prison inmate at SCI Fayette, sentenced in 1983 to life without parole. However, prison protocol and technology barriers prevented a recording of our conversation. So...you have me (Jane) instead--sharing what Richard and I discussed about his own journey, his work with other inmates, and some reflections about life inside prison walls. Richard's resumé is impressive; he's worked hard on himself, demonstrating remorse, adding to his own education, and--perhaps most important--adding to the rehabilitative efforts of his fellow inmates through sports, art classes, and community projects. I think you'll be inspired: as Richard says, "There's good in everyone" and I think he's determined to show you the good he's found inside his prison walls.

Joe urges second chances to non-violent inmates sentenced to lifetime terms who work hard to rehabilitate--suggesting that the purpose of prison is not terminal punishment but rehabilitation toward helping the incarcerated pursue productive futures in society. He offers insights into the challenges and accomplishments of those who become accomplished artists during their terms.

Senator Cappelletti, known to Jane simply as Amanda, was one of a handful of Jane's students who brought the Bear Fever public art project to the Boyertown community 16 years ago. Connections made during that time kickstarted Amanda's interest in travel, a study of international affairs, public service, a law degree, and--for now--a political career with interests surrounding women's rights issues and prison reform.
Jane and Amanda caught up during lunch on the afternoon of Studio B's Prison Art and Experience exhibit opening. I thoroughly enjoyed and learned some history reading local writer Pat Klimcho’s novel The College of St. Anselm and needed to pick his brain to learn where the concept for the novel began, any publishing tips for novice writers, and if he had any plans for a sequel. (He does; I can’t wait to read it and will look forward to the movie!) Author Dan Duffy shares his writing journey and the back story of Brother Brother, a fictionalized memoir recalling his lifetime search for his older brother who headed west following his tour of duty in Viet Nam to establish a commune and disappeared. Dan adds plans to his retirement from college administrator for continuing his search and his writing through Kindle Vella. Kindle Vella invites writers to share pieces of longer works in serialized fashion to inspire writers and help them to capture audiences. While not his brother’s keeper, Dan honors his brother’s memory in attempting to find his own peace through remembrance.

Daniel Price made a strategic choice in college to earn certification as an elementary education teacher while he decided what future direction to follow. I loved getting to know Wendy Fox –how she first started her work “taking pictures” for her son and how she’s evolved as a fine art photographer who creates the atypical and tells a story with each piece. We had such a great time! FIRSTS: Before Studio B's "Birds" exhibit even opened, artist Sandra Seaman's "Sunday Brunch with Birds" worked its charm and became the exhibit's FIRST sale. And while Ashley Kolpak's first love is to work in Mixed Media, she returned to oil paint for "Beauty and the Beast" and earned a FIRST PLACE award for technical achievement. Both artists create their magic in a variety of mediums. Sandra is in constant search of new projects in the arts. First--as a crafter creating beads and working in fabric, then publishing 2 novels, and now creating in acrylic paint, she finds her style through bold colors and shapes. In addition to making art, Ashley utilizes her extensive graphic arts experiences in her efforts with work partner Daniel Price promoting Mosaic Community Land Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing life in the Pottstown Area community.

The Casinos--inspired and inspiring: Jamie and Jeff Cascino invited members of the community to add their wishes to the Wishing Tree that decorated their front lawn during December 2020.

Thirteen years ago fine artist Susan Biebuyck had a vision to help the members of her art family promote their artwork. She imagined riding her bicycle from her home in the hills to her own gallery in Boyertown, a small town community in search of its soul. Studio B Art Gallery has served over 700 artists since its premiere opening in over 100 exhibits of artwork in all media. Karen Palcho began gathering wild plants and turning them into potions as a child. Her first product Huckleberry Finn Water was created by soaking Wildberry Lifesavers in warm water. Today she makes and sells stoneware pottery and teaches classes in all kinds of fermentation, herbal lotion and potion making, continuing a lifetime rooted in a fascination of transforming earth-based raw materials into beautiful pottery; tasty vegetables, beer and bread, cheese and sauerkraut; and healing lotions and medicines. All human life contains suffering. And al of us seek to relieve that suffering in some way. In a sense, then, we're all addicts! At the very least we're addicted to air, to food, to water! We're all different in our "drug of choice"--be it a drug, a drink, gambling, food, running, our sports team, our political party, our desire to be seen a certain way. And we're all "addicted" at different levels to use the term broadly.
We're all different in what brings us to the addictions that unbalance our lives to a varying degree. Helping one another--with compassion and understanding--and avoiding judgment, guilt, and shame is our challenge. Becoming aware of the "addictions" that unbalance lives and sometimes end lives through suicide and learning to manage lives in a more healthy way is holy work. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Shatter the stigma, be a safe place for those who suffer.
A conversation with Brandon Foose is part of this episode in which he shares the effects suicide has had on his life. He's been inspired and inspiring in his response.

Phil lives with his wife Julie in Gilbertsville and is the father of three outstanding children, two of whom are also poets and writers. July 4, 2020, a moody morning, was transformed by words offered in 2 of my friends' Facebook posts: the Declaration of Independence and the poem "I, Too" by Langston Hughes. Jane's preface to Studio B's 7th book of poetry and prose entitled "Superheroes: What the World Needs Now" included William Faulkner's Nobel Prize acceptance speech that urges poets to continue their work, their duty, as props and pillars helping mankind to endure and prevail--certainly what the world needs now.

Jess Bergeman is one of those students a teacher never forgets--she "branded" herself in her 8th grade Oratorical Contest speech as "Tigger"--a wonderfully warm and positive light in a sometimes dreary, dangerous world. Jess, biracial in Boyertown, where the KKK gathered monthly in our town's square, recalls being protected in a bubble of support that her friends provided. "Excelling" became her shield; "success" remains her mantra in efforts dedicated to effecting positive change in this complicated, exhausting time.

“B Inspired” podcast director Jane Stahl dedicates the “B Inspired “podcast to the many students she taught, students who inspired her throughout her career and in this new effort, along with her hopes and mission for the podcast’s upcoming episodes. Jane Stahl currently serves as Director of Community Relations for Studio B following 35 years of sharing a love of literature, writing, and speaking with junior high and high school students and a love of teaching with fellow teachers and the community. Following their dream of living in an artistic community, Jane and her husband Paul founded Boyertown’s Bear Fever community art project that ultimately led her into collaboration with fine artist Susan Biebuyck and the establishment of Studio B. So many projects, so little time! Jane hopes someday to take the time to self-publish a collection of her thoughts and experiences.
Brilliant, Esoteric. A transcendent being. Nikki is the type of free spirit who has become increasingly difficult to pin down as a linear-narrative character. Born in the small Philadelphia suburb of Eagleville, she progressively migrated to larger and larger ponds – first Penn State, then Washington DC, and subsequently Manhattan – to pursue a degree in journalism and build a career as an Internet marketer. Having worked her way up the ladder of a travel-focused digital agency, launched three businesses of her own, and circled the globe, she now facilitates discussions and lectures in New York City. She is currently solving the mysteries of the Universe and clarifying the meaning of life! Writer, artist, potter, historian, and volunteer extraordinaire, Bob began his career as an artist following his retirement from teaching Language Arts. Bob serves as Studio B’s gallery adjunct and invites the public for wide-ranging discussions on art, history, and the art and craft of writing. Bob has published four books on local history.

Sandra WilliamsSandra taught world literature and writing at both the high school and higher education levels since earning a BA in English and Secondary Education at Ursinus College and an MA in English at Villanova University. She is a writer of poetry, essays and short stories, with several published articles. She has been associated with Studio B since 2010 offering various adult writing opportunities and is now active in writing circles in Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts. Sandra believes writing is both therapeutic and enlightening—as “we become aware of what inspires us, expand our imagination, delve into our own knowledge and experience, and rely on our intuitive selves.” She collaborates with her husband, Robert, local landscape and mural painter, promoting community arts.
