This week Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by Scott Davenport, Bellarmine head coach...
Scott Davenport is a legend in coaching who has amassed multiple national coach of the year honors and also led the Bellarmine Knights to the 2011 NCAA Division II Tournament national championship. His career record of 398-130 (through the 2021-22 season) ranks him as Bellarmine’s all-time winningest coach both in terms of total wins and winning percentage (.754). While Davenport built Bellarmine’s program in a perennial national power at the Division II level, perhaps even more impressively, the Knights have continued to succeed in its recent transition to the NCAA Division I level. This past season (2021-22), Bellarmine posted a 20-win season in just its second year in Division I, finishing 20-13 while playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules. In recognition of his team’s success, Davenport was nominated for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award, which recognizes coaches from mid-major conferences.
The Knights capped their 2021-22 season by winning the ASUN Conference Championship title, hosting the championship game in Freedom Hall in front of the second-biggest crowd in the history of the ASUN Tournament. The victory sparked a national debate on the NCAA rule mandating that schools must wait four years to be eligible for NCAA postseason play following their transition to Division I. (Had Bellarmine not still been in its four-year transition period, the ASUN Championship would have punched the Knights’ ticket to the NCAA tournament.)
In this episode, Coach Davenport takes you through the program's transition to Division 1, how the game of basketball has the power to bring everyone together, why he coaches, what he has learned from the coaches he worked under before becoming a head coach, why he believes in having a program instead of a culture, his reasons for scheduling the way he does in non-conference, and the ins and outs of his style of play.
Enjoy hearing from Scott Davenport on Episode 250 of the Coaching U Podcast!

This week Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by P.J. Fleck, Head Coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. In this episode, Coach Fleck discusses his new book Row the Boat: A Never-Give-Up Approach to Lead with Enthusiasm and Optimism and Improve Your Team and Culture. In Row the Boat, Minnesota Golden Gophers Head Coach P.J. Fleck and bestselling author Jon Gordon deliver an inspiring message about what you can achieve when you approach life with a never-give-up philosophy. The book shows you how to choose enthusiasm and optimism as your guiding lights instead of being defined by circumstances and events outside of your control.
Discover how to put the three key components of row the boat into practice in your life: The Oar: The energy. Only you can dictate whether your oar is in the water or whether you take it out and decide not to use it. The Boat: The sacrifice. The more you give, serve, and make your life about helping others, the better and more fulfilled your life will be, and the bigger your boat gets. The Compass: The direction. The vision you have for your life and the people you surround yourself with help create the dream of where you want to go.
Perfect for athletes, coaches, business leaders, and anyone else who hopes to squeeze a little more enjoyment and productivity out of life, Row the Boat will propel leaders, teams, and organizations to greater heights than they have ever reached before.

In this episode Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by Jeff Pearlman as he delivers an inside look at the story of the Lakers dynasty from 1996 through 2004, when Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal combined—and collided—to help bring the Lakers three straight championships and restore the franchise as a powerhouse
In the history of modern sport, there have never been two high-level teammates who loathed each other the way Shaquille O’Neal loathed Kobe Bryant, and Kobe Bryant loathed Shaquille O’Neal. From public sniping and sparring, to physical altercations and the repeated threats of trade, it was warfare. And yet, despite eight years of infighting and hostility, by turns mediated and encouraged by coach Phil Jackson, the Shaq-Kobe duo resulted in one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history. Together, the two led the Lakers to three straight championships and returned glory and excitement to Los Angeles.
Hear what Jeff believes made Kobe, Shaq and Phil great in their own right as well as some interesting stories from the book on Episode 192 of the Coaching U Podcast!

This week Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by Tony Bennett, Head Coach of the defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers. In this episode Coach Bennett gives you a great lesson on how to face adversity - own it, grow from it and be better because of it. He relives his Virginia team's historic loss to UMBC in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament as they became the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed. He then explains how he was very intentional about how he used the experience to prepare his team for the future. The preparation paid off as his Virginia team found themselves in a similar situation as a #1 seed once again in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and once again facing adversity in close games throughout the tournament. In the end, his Cavalier team persevered as they won all six tournament games and brought home the school's first National Championship.

In this episode, Houston and Dover break down the 3 main areas of analytics they have found most beneficial to college coaches: Schedule Engineering, Scouting Analysis & Self-Optimization.
Schedule Smarter: Optimize your team’s postseason resume with an intelligent, data driven approach to non-conference scheduling. Smart scheduling is often the distinguishing factor between teams that go dancing and those that end up on the wrong side of the bubble. It can also be the difference between receiving a 5 seed or a 3 seed. We customize our research and proprietary algorithms to your team’s situation in order to provide you with specific projections and practical scheduling guidance.
Prepare Smarter: Know your opponents better and prepare for games more effectively. From shot selection tendencies to pace-of-play factors to defensive strengths and weaknesses, our advanced statistical analyses of your opponents will help you gain a winning edge. Not only will we provide you with exclusive data before you begin to implement your game plan, but we’ll walk you through its implementation and debrief with you after the game. We want you to feel like we’re a member of your staff – available when you need us and fully invested in your success.
Play Smarter: Leveraging data analytics to determine optimal lineup combinations, substitution patterns, and shot selection can result in measurable performance improvements. We use NBA-level analytics approaches to provide clients with best-in-class data about their teams and players. More importantly, we bring years of high level college basketball experience to bear in helping our clients build a bridge from data to practical application – after all, analytics on its own is useless without applicable insights. Simply put, we help you know your team better so that you can coach them better.
