For months you put your heart and soul into training, pouring all of your energy, and dedication into that one day… and then it’s over.

But no one really talks about what’s next?

Recovery.

After the high of the marathon, recovery can feel confusing.

You go from running all the time to doing absolutely nothing, and it’s easy to wonder, “Should I be doing more?”

The main thing to remeber is that RECOVERY is not the same for everyone. And you need to listen to your body.

In this week's episode the why, what and how on recovery. We discuss what you could be doing in the first few weeks after your race and how to slowly transition back to your normal routine.

Don't move on too quickly though, remember to celebrate everything you have just achieved.

In this week's episode we share our opinion on why we believe marathon plans don't always need to be 16 weeks. Research studies have also stated that 12 week plans can be more effective for experienced or advanced runners.

The crucial factor in deciding how long your block should be is, what did your training look like before, what do you need to work on next and break the cycle down into smaller blocks.

Our DMs are always open if you want to discuss this topic more and also in relation to your own training.

In this weeks episode we discuss 'base building' a term widely discussed in the running world, with sometimes not enough understanding.

Base building became very popular after an Australian coach Lydiard had huge success with some of his athletes in the 1960's.

A base building period forms a stage of your training plan before getting into the specifics of half or full marathon training. In this weeks episode we discuss what it is and how to execute it correctly.

A lot of people will be finishing spring races and moving into their next training block with the summer challenges coming up ahead. This time can feel a little difficult to navigate through, but we wanted to provide some motivation and inspiration to get you excited for the rest of the year.

We also answered some of your questions including:

  • How long should you be in a base building phase for? And what sessions to focus on.
  • How many days a week should you be training after returning from injury?
  • What sessions to be doing if you're training for a 5/10k to then move into an Autumn Marathon.
  • How to best phase into summer training in terms of heat / hydration / effort and what to expect in terms of heart rate?
  • How do you increase stride length?

Kelvin Kiptum, the current marathon world record holder, unfortunately passed away on Sunday 11th February in a car accident alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana.

Kelvin had a short but exciting career in marathon running, where he debuted with the fastest marathon debut of all time. He ran the fastest marathon in history at Chicago and was on track to being the first person to run under 2 hours for the marthon in a certified race.

As the news broke we wanted to dedicate an episode to his legacy and show the impact he's had on the running world in such a small space of time.

RIP Kelvin and Gervais.

One of our coached Running Hub Members Helen Smith joins us on today's episode to talk about her sensational success story.
Her journey started as a lockdown runner, but like many of us, once she completed the Great North Run half marathon she soon had aspirations of running the full 26.2.

After listening to many of the Running Hub Community podcast episodes and an initial chat with James, Edinburgh Marathon was booked and the challenge was on.

Helen knew she couldn't do it alone, so teamed up with Coach James. At the start she wanted to complete the marathon in 5 hours, as the hard work continued and confidence grew, both Helen and James knew she was capable of more.

Listen in to Helen's inspirational journey as she balanced family life, starting a new job and all of the hurdles of training for your first marathon.

Have you heard of the Abbott World Major Marathons?

The Six Star Medal was introduced by the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2016 to honor the runners who complete all six Major marathons. These marathons are Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

Getting into these marathons is not always straight forward entry, they all have ballots or entry requirements of some form, making them ellusive and prestigious.

In this episode we walk you through what entry pathways there are to each one and how you can add them to your bucketlist.

Let us know how many stars you've completed and if you're on your way to your 6 star dream? Six Stars. Six Races. One Dream.

James and I were very fortunate enough to spend 5 days at the world class sports and health resort Thanyapura in Phuket a few weeks ago.

We planned our diaries so we could work a ‘peak’ week into our training calendar to make the most of the facilities and use the resort to its full potential.

In this episode we give you a low down of what its like to be surrounded by elite athletes & lots of Olympic ring tattoos, what our training week looked like and what sessions we ran and the classes we did and how we found the overall experience of our first camp. Hopefully this won’t be our last camp either!

We hope you enjoy this episiode and the podcast in general.

Everyone wants to get better at running, correct? And there are things we can do outside of our running to help benefit our performance and become a #StrongerFitterFaster runner. We talk through the fundamentals to training that can help benefit our running in a positive way.

And with that we have launched a new 8 week programme starting on Monday 6th March to go through these different fundamentals - week by week so that you can learn and implement them into your own training routine. It will work alongside a training plan and will be perfect for those who may have been lacking in motivation recently, those that are returning from injury or those fairly new to running and wanting to learn more. With Autumn marathons just around the corner, what a great episode just in time for the taper!

The taper is a period of time, just before you target race to set you up well for race day. It's where you begin to reduce the volume and intensity of your training so you feel well rested and ready to go ahead of the 26.2.

We wanted to discuss time being a barrier for training in this episode.
And how you can maximise your time to get results.

This weeks podcast is discussing nutrition and some myths we believe to be wrong.

James and I are not dieticians or nutritionists, however over the years we have researched, experience and gain knowledge surrounding nutrition.

For us nutrition is a really personal thing and it takes time to find out what is right for you. We believe it’s down to how you apply your research and knowledge to your own regime and lifestyle.

We busted some myths such as:

  • Carbs are bad
  • Eating late at night is not a good thing
  • Being leaner makes you faster
  • Running fasted will help you to burn more fat

As James’ track season comes to a close, we wanted recap the last few months he's spent running round in circles. I also wanted to gain a little more insight into how he got and on we wanted to share how you can get involved yourself maybe next year if you’ve been inspired.

Track can be a daunting thing, but hopefully this shows that anyone can take part, you just have to find the right races for you, go along with a friend and be pushed outside of your comfort zone slightly.

We then chat about James will transition this speed work into marathon training as he is working towards Amsterdam Marathon on 16th October and Katie is working towards London Marathon on 2nd October.

Nicky Edwards is a physiotherapist and women’s training advocate. In this episode we discuss how to manage training as women, why strength training is SO important, how to use your cycle to get the most out of your training and how to manage training through the menopause.

Although some men wouldn’t think this episode is for them I would encourage them to do so, to further understand the sport and their knowledge to help support their peers and partners.

An interesting episode, where it does get deep and personal at times, but these are topics which don't often get spoken about and we're here to open up the conversation.

We hope you enjoy this one, and let me know if you'd like to see me run the London Marathon this year in a wedding dress?...

The track season in running takes place throughout the summer.

At the moment James and a few other Hub members are including some track racing in their training schedule, so we thought we would start the conversation around track training and racing.
We speak about our experience with the track, how we use it to benefit our training and talk about the accessibility of it.

On the Bank Holiday weekend Milton Keynes hosted the MK Marathon weekend!

We had a vast amount of Hub members taking on a variety of distances so wanted to fill you in with how everyone else got on.

James also took on the relay and Katie took on the marathon as a lot of focus this year on the podcast has been about our marathon build up.

This episode features Ayo Dada, a runner and Adidas Runners Captain based in North West London.

How his journey started has a pretty cool story, being inspired by Super Saturday at the 2012 Olympic Games.

As a leader and captain of a community I wanted to chat to Ayo about the network Adidas Runners provides and how his role is so important in inspiring and supporting others.

Its very clear that Ayo is very wise and he had some great takeaways from this conversation. One being that running is like a boat, when you set off on your voyage, the boat may dock at some points but you’ll always be pushing towards the next destination.

As well as wise, he’s also talented, going from a 4.58 marathon to 3.01 in one year and taking part in the Speed Project where collectively 6 runners completed 550km in an average speed of 3.44 per km which is also 6 min mixing.

I can't wait for you to listen to this one!

Today I’m joined by the one and only Tom Williams, parkrun COO and one host of the podcast Marathon Talk.

Following parkrun’s recent statement I knew I wanted to speak with a guest about the hot topic and planned return.

I saw that Tom was actively posting about parkrun on Twitter one day and thought I’d tweet and ask if he’d like to come onto the podcast.

My Mum has always taught me, if you don’t ask, you don’t get and the worst someone can say is no. Lucky for you and I, Tom said yes! And here we are.

After recording a 2 hour Facebook Live Tom jumped straight onto Zoom with me to answer all of your questions. He initially promised me half hour and I was worried about how I could fit everything into that time.

But as you can tell by the length of the podcast, we were chatting for a lot longer than that and this was definitely one of the most interesting and engaging conversations. I can’t thank Tom enough for taking the time to record this for us.

Despite recent negativity in the media about the current affairs in the UK, we tried to keep the chat positive and lighthearted, as well as wanting to answer some concerns and changes we may see as park runners in the future.

The main message that came from the chat at the end, is very powerful and I hope you can all take on board Tom’s suggestions following on from this.

Greenlight PT provides group and online coaching for triathletes, which now has turned into a club and community.

I invited Adam onto the podcast to talk about the return of racing and how our runners can get back to racing sensibly and safely, depending on their training volume over the last few months. Some people have been able to train more and unfortunately due to personal circumstances that hasn’t been the case for others. However, do not fear, whatever stage you are at in training, there’s always an approach that will be right for you.

Lockdown has certainly taught us a lot as coaches and we’re both excited for the months ahead.

We also spoke about how to prepare for winter training and what we should be focusing our efforts on in the next few months.

Hope you enjoy the episode!

Today I’m joined by Elliot Hind, who is 1/3 of the team who form the race organisers for the MK5000 PB Special.

A 5000m track race which enables athletes to compete against others gunning for a similar time.

They had a very successful first 2 years on the track, but like everything else, Covid decided to upset their plans for the third event.

Rather than waiting until next year, the guys changed the format and took to the roads to allow athletes to race again.

Elliot discussed how the idea was born, what it took to get it off the ground and how they’ve adapted the track race to the roads and what they had to do to obtain the race licence. We also discussed the future of the event and where he sees it in years to come.

Their sister company Big Cow Events provides local races within Milton Keynes and are probably most famous with us runners for the Cattle Creep, Autumn Run and Winter Half Marathon.

In this chat, we spoke about the impact of coronavirus on their companies, what they’ve done to survive throughout these times and some exciting exclusives for upcoming events. You won’t want to miss this one!

Another corona catch up where we chat to previous guests of the podcast.

It was great to catch up with Matt Bergin (Ep 11) as he has been very busy the last few months setting up his new business - The Performance Team - https://www.performanceteam.co.uk/

I also sat down with my lovely friend Ana (Ep 4) to chat about her journey as we spoke at the beginning of March not knowing what was to come. Although a lot of races in her diary have been cancelled, as normal the ball of energy she is has overcome many hurdles.

Thank you so much for your support since the podcast launched back in February!

We’ll be taking a short break but will be back in August with some new exciting episodes for you in Series 2.

Oh my goodness.. what an absolute delight to be able to chat to my bestest friends about running!!

I’ve been friends with Lynn and Frey since Year 7 and 8 of school, so we’re talking a good 19 or 20 years now.

Lynn has been running for around 4 years now and in this time we’ve ran the Vitality 10,000 together and I also helped her with a plan leading up to a half marathon earlier this year. Since lockdown came around in March, Lynn has used her free time to put all her energy into running and it’s been so lovely to watch her progress and her confidence in her own ability.

Freya has recently completed the couch to 5km app and although Freya has walked a marathon, she would admit she didn’t think she’d be someone to take on running. A few weeks ago, Lynn and I got to run with Freya on her first 5km which was a really special moment in our friendship.

I was so excited to invite these two onto the podcast to talk about their journeys but also share some special memories that running has given us throughout our journeys.

I hope you enjoy this episode as we draw close to the end of series 1. I have some great ideas up my sleeve for series 2 so stay tuned! We will be taking a short break to plan out the next set of guests but promise you it won’t be long.

Thanks for listening and as always, hope you enjoy this chat!

With September drawing closer and time running out, Andy had to make the tough decision to go with his Plan B idea and has come up with the new concept; MK Marathon Reimagined. It was great chat to Andy about how the vision came about as no other race organiser has been yet to provide an option to their runners of this level.

It was interesting to understand what the original Plan A race would have looked like in September with social distancing and was clear it wouldn’t be runners are used. It sounds as Andy and the MK team have put in some really hard work to come up with the best alternative solution.

I thought it would be an interesting idea to invite some previous guests back onto the podcast and catch up with what they've been up to recently.

We caught up with Mark from Ep 5, James from Ep 1, Naomi from Ep 2 and Duncan from Ep 3.

I asked them what they've been up to since March, how the current times may have affected their running, what's been keeping them motivated and what they're looking forward to next! Some great catch ups and really interesting to hear what they've all been doing.

In this episode it's a role reversal. James puts Katie in the hot seat and brings her onto the podcast to talk about her own running journey and answer YOUR questions!

Katie shares her running background, how she got into coaching and she mentions the London Marathon just a few times!!!

Rudi, owner of the Treatment Lab clinic joined me to share his own running journey and how the clinic has been impacted by current events.

I've been treated by Rudi for over 3 years so trust in everything he does and says!

As a fellow runner, Rudi sees and treat a lot of runners from all over Milton Keynes and as a runner himself can relate to our injuries and setbacks.

Rudi is also part of the dream team that puts together the Sponsored Athlete programme where we sponsor 2 athletes every year on their journey to a spring marathon. The programme is in its 3rd year and this years athletes Mark and Anastasia have previously featured on this episode.

We go on to discuss what future appointments look like in the sports treatment world and what the new 'normal' will look like.

Adam has 447 marathons and ultras to his name and has won more marathons/ultra marathons than anyone else in the UK.

He was only 23 years old when he had reached 100 marathons putting him in the Guinness World Records for being the youngest person in Europe to achieve this. He is also the fastest person to run 10 marathons in 10 days, with an average time of 2 hours 45 minutes. Last year he completed the famous John O’Groats to Lands End Challenge where he ran over 800 miles running from the top to the bottom of the UK.

This year Adam was due to run 20 marathons in 20 days but due to the current climate this has not been possible.

Although Adams achievements are very impressive, he was very modest during our chat. We discussed some of his many achievements but also delved a bit deeper into how his running has changed in recent times.

Welcome to Episode 18 where I had the pleasure of chatting to Anastasia Murphy, also known as @murphyruns on Instagram.

Anastasia is one of our sponsored athletes, where she got the opportunity to work with me, The Treatment Lab and Up Running leading up to Manchester Marathon.

We chatted through her journey into running, her first marathon experience and the different she’s found now that she’s had a coach and the positive impact its had on her running.

Also a part of the Brooks Run Happy Team, we spoke about her goals and if they’ve changed due to the current lockdown and what motivates her to get out the front door to run.

I hope you enjoy this episode whether you’re on a long run, walk or just listening at home.

Welcome to Episode 17 and one I’m sure a few of you will be very interested in!

In this episode I sat down with Andy Hully the race director of the Milton Keynes marathon.

Milton Keynes Marathon first started in 2012 to signify the Olympic year. It’s now turned into a huge event over the last few years with the running community actively getting involved by either running the event, volunteering or spectating. Taking place every May Bank Holiday it’s one of the biggest races on our local calendar.

The Milton Keynes Marathon not only has the main event, but a half marathon, superhero fun run - a 1 mile race for the family, a new 10km race and the famous 5km rocket the day before with a great course for a PB! The MK marathon is iconic due to the fact that you get to finish in the football stadium cheered on by all of your friends and family.

Andy very kindly spoke to me about how the events unfolded in March leaving him with no option to postpone the event until September. with huge uncertainty around Autumn events and a very crowded race calendar I asked Andy to share his thoughts on what he sees mass races looking like in the future.

I hope you enjoy this event and want to thank Andy once again for coming onto the podcast.

Welcome to Episode 16, where I sat down with Andy Raynor also know as the FOD Runner or Forest of Dean Runner.

I met Andy through a mutual friend and over the last few years have had the pleasure of meeting him at various running events and am now able to call him a friend.

Andy is a family man, running his own businesses but a very keen and talented runner. He seems to balance everything so well but also not the sacrifice of something else.

If you know Andy, then you’ll know he’s a man who thoroughly enjoys the trails, loves a trainer review and has his own unique style of training.

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Andy to chat about his approach to training, how he tackles the long run as he runs 90% of the time between 18-20 miles and his growing YouTube channel. Since we recorded this he’s hit over 5,000 subscribers which is a huge achievement and a lot more than when we first met.

We talk through how relaxing and ignoring the watch has allowed him to achieve a sub 3 hour marathon after a few previous marathon disasters. He’s also run a 36 minute 10km and 77 minute half marathon recently which is incredible as he’s only been running for 5 years!

In episode 14 I get the chance to catch up and chat to Dionne, the manager of the running retail shop Up & Running in Milton Keynes.

For anyone that’s ever had the opportunity of meeting Dionne, you’ll know her passion and love for running and everything kit and trainer related. When we first met I was taken aback by her shoe knowledge and if I ever need advice then I know she’s the lady to go to!

I couldn't think of anyone else to chat to about the various types of trainers, gait analysis, what trainers suit each runner and how Up & Running are managing at this time.

We even got onto to the hot topic of the carbon fibre plates shoes that have shot into the market.

As always I hope you enjoy this episode. Please leave us some love, subscribe and share with any new runners!

Welcome to Episode 13, where I had the pleasure of talking to Badminton Olympic Silver Medallist and World Champion Gail Emms.

The way this chat came about has a small story behind it.

My Dad, who’s one of my biggest fans, saw that Gail Emms had been working with some sports team online and then sent her a message asking if she’d be free to come onto my podcast.

After I slid into her DMs we got chatting and Gail said yes! We had a great chat on the phone beforehand and I shamelessly told her we’d met a few times previously, one at a networking event where she did a talk for female business owners and the other time at the training studio F45 where we’d both taken part in a class. In todays episode Gail takes us through her sporting career, how she used running to improve her Badminton, what running races she’s done in the past including the London Marathon, what lockdown life looks like for her now and as a sports speaker and motivator, how we can all be adapting to make the most of our time and use exercise as a positive and powerful tool.

I really do hope you enjoy this one as Gails energy and enthusiasm was really infectious.

In Episode 12, I had the honour of sitting down with Michael McKillop, Irish International Runner and Paralympic Champion three times over.

After discovering at a very young age that he had cerebral palsy, his parents actively encouraged him to live a full and happy life and at the age of 5 received his first pair of spikes. Sounds like he was destined to run as his Dad is a PE Teacher and also his coach. Michael has gone on to have an incredible running career and is now a very decorated athlete. He had an unbeaten streak from 2006 all the way until last year in 2019.

The unique thing about Michael is that he competes as both an able-bodied athlete most of the year but also as a para-athlete. He was the first disabled athlete to represent his country at an IAAF Euro Cross Championships. His main distances are 800m and 1500m.

Michael shared his journey with me where his paralympic journey started in 2005 and went on to win two silver medals at the European championships. At the age of 16 he went on to win his first title and broke the 800m World Record for the first time.

In 2008 Michael went to the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. He's since had the opportunity to go to two further games and was due to be in Tokyo this year. We chat about the postponement and what that means for his future running career.

I recently chatted with GB and New Balance athlete Melissa Courtney-Bryant, to chat about her incredible running journey from junior athlete to European Indoor Championship medalist.

After reaching a PB at 14 she hit a plateau which she didn't manage to break until she was 19 at Brunel University.

We spoke about how not qualifying for the World Championships in London spurred her on even more to train harder which led to her bronze at the European Championship in 2017.

She's made a few sacrifices along the way and gambled to make it as a full time athlete.

With a promising career ahead of her and Olympic Dreams she spoke about how she's going to manage her training at this time.

It was an honour to have Melissa on the podcast and I thoroughly enjoyed recording this episode.

Daily life has changed for us both and we talk about how we plan to use our time effectively.

Hope you're all coping with training well! x

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Mizon, Bedford and County Runner to discuss his phenomenal journey and progression through the years.

His journey started around a lake, running 5km as he simply didn't want to pay a joining fee at the gym.

He now has run 14.40 for 5km, 67 minutes over half marathon distance and still wants to go quicker.

His 'keep at it' attitude and determination has seen him progress and we talk through what else has contributed to these times.

As Covid-19 (coronavirus) has hit, it's had a huge impact on health, mental well-being, jobs, the economy but also the spring race calendar for runners.

I took the opportunity to sit down with three lovely ladies who all had Spring Marathons booked and how this will impact their race calendar and training for the rest of the year.

We discuss the emotions, feelings and thought processes in the midst of it all.

Hope you enjoy this bonus episode.

Mark joined me to chat through his running journey, going from a guy who ran in big hoodies in the dark for 10 minutes to tackling an 145 mile race along the Grand Union Canal.

He's part of the 100 marathon club, ran multiple ultras and likes to see how far he challenge and test his body.

We spoke about nutrition and how to prepare for long distance races and also how we then wrote his own book documenting the various challenges he's set himself.

A great chat even though he got attacked slightly by one of my cats Lily.

In episode 4 I had the pleasure of chatting to Chasing Chaplin about her running journey, her love for Ultras, how to overcome injury as she'd had a few to battle and the special instagram community we have.

I loved this chat with Ana as she likes to keep things real and raw and loves to say yes to a challenge.

Can't wait to have her later on in the year to chat through all these mad challenges she's set herself for 2020.
