Our human brains are so powerful. They’re designed to constantly scan the environment to warn us of danger. For some though this means our brains see ANY potential new thing as a danger and sound the alarm. Instead of saying: “Hey, that looks risky”, our brains say: “Don’t do that. You'll look ridiculous. Everyone will laugh. Who do you think you are?” Our brains know our weak spots that make us back away from trying new things. They are like helicopter parents - well meaning but in the end make us timid and afraid. One way to combat this unhelpful commentary is to give our hard working brains something productive to do - ask it questions to answer in order to shift the focus: “How can I see this task as an experiment? When have I done courageous acts in my past? What is possible for my future if I'm willing to fail publicly?” I decided to ask myself 23 Questions - Vogue Style. “What are you most proud of? What superhero do you identify with? Are you divorced? When do you write? What would you say to someone in a creative slump?” I surprised myself with my answers!! Enjoy!

The following 9 lessons are based on what I wished I had learned as a teenager lying in bed and avoiding taking on challenges, risks, and hard work. Failure is part of life. Take on Challenges where you have to fail over and over is the path to success. Feelings are sensations in the body and are normal to feel. Discomfort is where growth happens. You can admit to being wrong, be wrong, and get it wrong - and learn. Life is hard and unfair - and beautiful and easy. Hard work is more important than brains, talents and being nice - but it still does not mean you’re entitled to getting what you want. Feeling fear is part of taking risks - lean into it. Be vulnerably courageous and risk telling the truth. (Note: I did take many unfortunate challenges with my hair. I regret nothing.)
Talking to different women as I run my networking challenge has shown me that thoughts about our appearance hold us back when it comes to networking and putting ourselves out there. We tell ourselves: “I’m too fat to network. If I go to that event, people will think: if she can’t control her weight, how can she run a business,” or “I’m too old to network. People will think: if she’s so smart, how come she didn’t start this business years ago.” Black women, people of colour, and Indigenous women have added inner dialogues when it comes to body image and race about how welcome they feel to walk into networking spaces. These thoughts keep us sitting on the couch - forever planning our business, but not moving forward to take action. By becoming aware that the constant negative chatter in our heads are thoughts - actually just sentences in our brains - that did not originate with us and are not true, will begin to set us free. Learning how to change those thoughts so we feel motivated, proud, and energized is crucial to taking the actions to get us the results we want. This episode is for all of us who’ve felt: “I’m too fat to…” And my desire to make sure we never believe that thought again.

It’s up to us to find time for our own pleasure. It’s a radical act to serve ourselves up some fun and enjoyment, rather than serve everyone else. Starting our mornings with pleasure will create a day that’s productive but also full joy, wonder, and gratitude for the life we’re living. Clear off your nightstand, lay out your workout clothes, adorn yourself with clothes that make you feel special, and breathe! And if all else fails, start the day with an orgasm - or two! - and get started on the right foot!!

A lot of us get it backward. We think: “When I have more clients I’ll be happy” or “When I launch my product I’ll be happy” or “When I make my projected income, I’ll be happy.” We think we have to wait to be successful to be happy. According to Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, and many other positivity researchers, the opposite is the case. Be happy first and the success will follow. I have for sure found this to be the case in my own life. This week’s episode I’m sharing 5 tips on how to bring more happiness into your daily business life so you can welcome in the success you’re looking for with open arms: Choose a mantra (or in my case, many mantras), fuck the past, laugh (a lot), keep a gratitude diary, and read books by inspiring people (bonus points if they’re also funny!)
My podcast is about being the best boss of yourself to make the best life for you and your business. Speaking up, being heard, and asking for what you want is a huge part of my platform on self leadership. But today’s episode is about listening - how it is crucial to listen deeply to Black women, women of colour, and indigenous women in doing anti-racist work, so our world and communities can become more just, equitable, and safe for everyone. Listening and learning are important parts of being a great leader. In this episode you will learn: how to pass the mic, google your questions or pay people for their expertise, how to be anxious and do the work anyway, become aware of what voices you are hearing on a daily basis, stop tone policing, interview, hire, and buy from black, people of colour and indigenous businesses, and get prepared to be wrong. Listen up!!
There are so many benefits to hosting your own podcast. It helps you get clear on your messaging, elevate your voice and the voices of your guests, helps you inspire people, helps you reach people who don’t like reading blogs or watching video, and gets you comfortable making mistakes and moving forward. One of the most amazing benefits I’ve discovered is the many ways I can repurpose my podcast content into other content: social media posts, my blog, and even live video. All of us benefit from hearing messages repeated until we’re compelled to take action. In this episode, I walk you through my 8 step process for my podcast content creation. Thanks to my assistant Leeann Forbes and my podcasting team from S & S Podcasting with Shalinda Kirby and Natalie Suppes for helping me make this happen! www.instagram.com/sandspodcasting
The quote “Opportunity dances with those already on the dance floor,” by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. who wrote Life’s Little Instruction Book reminds us that to meet opportunity in our business we have to get up and get on the dance floor. However, many of us have excuses holding us back from shakin’ our groove thing: I don’t have anyone to dance with (Reach out and create a community) Last time I danced, I fell and skinned my knee (Success is filled with all sorts of failure and mistakes. Try again) Everyone will stare (Being seen and heard does risk judgment and criticism. Learning to deal with our feelings of rejection helps us keep showing up and being seen at the disco) It’s time to put you and your talents out there. Enjoy this episode encouraging you to take action, move your body, and stop letting excuses hold you back. See you on the dance floor!!

It’s time to look at your goals and see where you are at. To recommit to your business and the good you want to do in this world. This podcast episode has ten ways you can redefine and recommit to your goals. It’s a great time to make sure your values are lining up with your business, let go of some old plans, and celebrate the ones you’ve achieved. It can be frustrating to not be where we wanted to be at this point, but don’t waste time in regret. Move forward and say yes to what delights you. I believe in you. You can do this!!
As we move increasingly out of the Covid 19 quarantine, and we realize no one knows what they’re doing, and we’re making this shit up as we go along, we need our creative powers more than ever. That’s where we business owners thrive! We are so creative. The marketing which combines images, colour, copy, and psychology is a daily practice of creative possibility - so is the planning and implementation of your vision. I found as I unleashed my extra time and energy on my garden during the Covid 19’s stay at home order, and found myself out in the turning over the soil to make room for new growth, it became clear how this creative pastime is a fantastic metaphor for being in business for yourself. So enjoy this episode where I talk about 16! ways gardening is like running a business: from having a vision to hard work and patience. It pays off to plant the seeds, and prepare to enjoy the fruits of your labour - even if some of them take years to enjoy.
Living through the Covid 19 Pandemic has shown us all there are circumstances we can’t control right now. We’ve been challenged in so many ways: our daily lives, our social systems, our finances. Something that works for me is thought models: deliberately choosing the thoughts to think about my circumstances that will generate the feelings, actions, and results I get. Knowing what we can control in our lives is a great gift at this time. Learning how to think about circumstances we can’t control is a challenge, but it’s a necessary challenge - it’s the difference between staying stuck on the couch, or being motivated to keep moving forward. Dive into this episode on how to Be the Best Boss of Your Mind! It’s worth gold in your business and your life.
Being the best boss of yourself means being the best boss of your body. Today’s episode explores 7 ways you can learn to be the best boss of your body. 1. Move your body for the mind/body connection to gain clarity and insight for your business. Do what makes you feel good, as well as getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. 2. Having the right to choose what we do with our bodies is an important part of being the boss of our bodies, and ultimately our lives. Enjoy!! Why not listen to this while you move that glorious body of yours!

They want to like you. And they need to trust you. In order for that to happen, you need to add personal touches to your content. So what do you share, and what do you leave out? In this episode, Linda asks the question: Who are you going to be after the storm? She knows that in this time of global crisis, we have choices to make about how we’re going to show up. She wants to show up as a person who feels her feelings; knowing that having feelings makes us human, but learning to process emotions keeps us moving forward toward our goals. Everything we want is usually on the other side of a difficult feeling. After the storm, she also wants to be the kind of person who shows up to teach and inspire even when she’s imperfect, even when she’s struggling, even when she’s failing. She wants you to know you and your business have incredible value right now as you are - human, flawed and real, and your customers and clients are waiting for you to show up just as you are.

In this episode, Linda shares how her own struggles with procrastination, indecisiveness and self-promotion led her to create a blueprint for a successful, productive day. And how joining Toastmasters gave her clarity on the messages she wanted to share with other entrepreneurs - be willing to fail, face rejection, and work through fears.
During her time at Toastmasters, she quickly realized she wasn’t alone. She took a pivot in her business and started to coach other women through their limiting beliefs. She produced workshops on how to create habits that push us forward in our business and lives.
She shares how her daughters are her biggest motivations to encourage women to move forward past the feelings of pain and self-doubt as they work to achieve their personal and professional goals.
